When i'm having a day that i have to forehand I know i'll be sore. For me backhanding with a clean follow through causes no pain. If i'm hurky jerky i'll feel it. As the others said doing stretches helps. The doctor told me because I didn't have radiating leg pain that they were 50/50 on whether or not it would fix me or not. I found going to the chiropractor really helped. So i've skipped doing surgery until i'm older (30yrs old now). When my pain was bad my legs would give out and i'd fall to the ground and not be able to get up.

Take it easy, slowly learn your limits, and slow down when you start to feel the signs of pain coming.

Surgery is the only fix? That's bad advice, dude.

Hartley, how do you know you herniated a disc?

Had one in my neck, numbness and tingling in my entire right arm...... took a month off and threw left-handed for a couple more.

Forced me to change my throw as I was told it was a direct result of 27 years of throwing disc.

Chiropractor said he thinks its herniated and so did the hospital although they did not do an MRI to confirm. The gave me valium and percocete and told me to go to rehab and gave me a script for an MRI if physical therapy doesn't help.

I had one while playing tennis (I rushed quickly to the net then stopped quickly when my body is fully bent forward which is no no as it put all of pressure on couple of discs in lower back area) back in early 2010. I stood up and felt something in my lower back. No more tennis then walked back home. Could not walk for three days as I stayed on the bed the whole time. Went to see chiropractor (he did work on Shaq his size 24 something basketball shoe is on display there) and got better slowly everyday to the point I was able to play DG one month later. Fully recovered in about 4 to 6 months. I use cart instead of carry. No problems with my lower back since then.

However I still have issues with my neck which is on spinal column. Went to chiropractor many times but I still have issues with my neck. I will give Egoscue method a shot (there is a good book written by Pete Egoscue called "Pain Free") as I will be at Austin and will stop by Egoscue clinic there. I am sure my balance, posture and alignment is not in sync so I need to work on that. It make sense that it is the muscles that supports the bone structure so need to focus on getting those muscles allover the body right.

I'm a Chiropractic physician, I work with a pain management doc and a orthopedic surgeon. I treat herniated disc all day every day. 1 month of 3-2x a week physical therapy (ems, us, ice, heat, intersegmental traction very key) and chiropractic spinal adjustments, non rotary type. At 2 weeks re-eval if not improving change up. If you are improving, stay on the conservative care path. At 1 month if no change or very slow to respond, consider pain management, steroid injection may be helpful. Surgery should always be your last option. 90% will resolve with conservative care and do NOT require surgery. Disc suck, I feel for ya.

If your back is hurting you every day, you should see a Chiropractor, preferably one that specializes in sports medicine, these guys and gals are top notch, or one that does physical therapy as well. Not all Chiropractors will do physical therapy, and most physical therapist do not know how to adjust a spine. If your are just a muscle skeletal case, you should get good results, if anything else is going on, they should be able to tell you. They will probally start you with passive care and move you into more active care as you improve. Most chiropractic treatments are enjoyable, it's not like going to the MD's office. Good luck!

Sleep with a pillow between your knees. That will help with your hips. Get chiropractic care for your low back as well!
