Pardon my ignorance
Tomahawk vs Thumber,
other than the direction of the rotation is there any real difference? I've only just recently started trying these and almost exclusively as a trouble shot when I have no other trick in my bag. I'm LH and my left thumb is permanently dislocated so so getting any real distance is just about impossible because I have a very difficult time gripping a disc for that type of throw. Help a brother out here.

I'm in a bit of a hurry, gotta go to my son's school to help him out with his Halloween costume. Shoulda put this in the Technique section.

Try a thumber with the thumb on the rim instead of the plate

I dont think, anyway, that he means as far as you hold it but rather flight difference other than the direction of rotation.
It pretty much is the distance of rotation but I seem to find my thumbers fly higher while my tommies get more distance. That could be part of form because I always seem to have a natural ability of those shots and have not really looked deep into it. just took it and didnt ask questions. |

Which ever way it's thrown, the disc will naturally fall toward the face of the disc first then will swing back in the opposite direction before landing. See this video for a visual explanation of both throws!

I understand how to throw the disc (at least in theory) And having seen others throw them and from my limited experience throwing them I have at least a little clue on how it flies. My real question is why would you use one over the other?
Thanks Techno for your explanation and that is the kind of feedback I'm looking for. I suppose it makes sense to do some field work so I can get a good idea on what discs do what. I was under the impression that maybe one would tend to go right while the other might tend to go left.

I throw both tomahawk and thumbers depending on the shot. A thumber if released perpendicular to the ground finishes to the right, while a tomahawk finishes to the left (right-handed). Useful if you need to get into a tight spot. If accuracy isn't a must and I just need to get over something, I prefer the thumber because I can grip it better.
