Camping nearby

This is a nice DGCR feature, but what I want to know, is it free camping ?
I am particularly interested in free or minimal cost camping along the western Michigan coast, the U.P.,and eastern WI. Amenities not required.

Eastern WI i got you covered for a night if you'd like, depending on the trip date.

I agree that this is a fairly useless function "camping nearby" doesn't tell me much (is it a state park, private camp ground, national forest, blm land, some guy's back yard?). A while back I proposed changing it to "camping on site" or adding a field to describe the type of camping nearby.

I've wished this was a little more specific also.

Along the coast of this side of Michigan there is going to be little to no free or low cost camping especially the further south you go or the closer you get to Traverse City and the Leelenau penninsula. Of course that depends on your definition of low cost and whether or not you are camping during summer. My suggestion for minimalist camping is the Manistee national forest. There are oodles of primitive campsites not terribly far from Ludington which puts you sorta close to Flip City, Beauty, Beast, etc.

For the most part state campgrounds are plentiful but oftentimes campsites need to be reserved long in advance especially those like, Warren Dunes, Holland and Ludington. Warren Dunes is allegedly the busiest of all Michigan State parks. Primitive sites however, never seem to be as busy as the regular ones but not all state parks have primitive sites.
