[Question] Slower utility disc?

So, I have an extra spot in my bag and want to put a putter/mid utility type of disc in that spot.

Weighing my options based off what I have on hand, I can put an A2, a Justice, or a Stego into that spot and they each have their pros and cons.

For those who bag a mid or putter for tricky get out of trouble shots, which disc do you bag and why?

I use the A3, prefer the feel to the A2. Both are sufficiently overstable for what I am doing with them which is primarily forehands inside 200 or so. I feel like more OS options would be a little limiting in what I am able to do which definitely includes throwing them straight.

I Berg/Drone, would also carry a Stego but haven't been playing much so the purchase hasn't occurred.

Berg is very stable (not overstable) so it's great for certain tunnel shots with mild but consistent fade at the end. Also great for hyzers that again fade minimally but consistently with range control - you literally cannot throw them that far.

Drone is a small diameter mid that will turn with little effort but fades hard. Once you know it the flex shots are unreal. Will also hyzerflip to flat with enough power followed by a hefty fade. Flat to slight anhyzer (depending upon beatness, etc) will provide a bit or a decent amount of turn but again you can rely on it coming back.

Stego is...well, Stego.

EDIT: I'm at sea level. TIMG I still wish people could list that for an idea of different flights - RR at 3000' is much different than at 0'

I bag all three of those…

Stego- hit and stop shots up to 250 almost all FH, it so OS the fade is actually not that far. Sticks to hilly holes at speed pretty well.

A2- I carry 2 a 750 that is pretty beefy, I use it BH and FH and skip it a lot. If I need to do a FH on a forced turnover I use this or for short overhand shots. Also a 300S for very tight S curve FHs and hit and stop backhands. I use this one the most like a traditional approach disc.

Justice- it's a good bit faster than the other two for me and the ones I throw are pretty beefy. Flex FH and hyzer FH up to 325 and backhand skips.

I've been using my SOL more lately for shorter really straight shots.

Yeah, altitude is real. It's seldom I ever play below 5,000 feet so it's really hard to read reviews from others because the flight they get could be very different from what I get even if we're throwing the same disc roughly the same distance.

Since some of you have recommended some discs outside of what I'm looking for I guess I should mention that I already bag workable and moderately overstable discs for normal use. I'm looking for beef for those rare shots are a high, steep flex forehand that needs to pan out or a stupid low skip shot that only needs cover about 120' of distance.

Z Zone is my get out of trouble disc. Star Cheetah is a 6 speed, but can make all sorts of shapes. It does like wander and come back to the line with very little fade. I've come to think of it as and understable mid, and it gets used in the trees, likes to land flat.

Stego- Sticks to hilly holes at speed pretty well.

But if the Stego starts rolling… it's like a monster truck tire going down a mountain. Two buddies laughed hard as they have their entire life at Waterworks when my 100' Stego approach caught edge under the basket and rolled 100' back over exposed roots, slowly, like a Jeep in 1st gear.

ETA I use a Razor Claw 2 nowadays. The Stego is good. The A2 is good. Berg is good. The Justice is good. Of those you mentioned, totally the Stego.

In MVP world, I'd rank the OS mids in increasing stability Runway>Pyro>Deflector. I can't deal with the last and I can sometimes turn over the first. Right now the Pyro seems to be the happy medium, but the Deflector is probably the closest to what you're describing, albeit maybe a shade longer. Among the putters, it would be the Entropy and Stabilizer by the numbers, but I think both are more mellow than they read.

As a long-time thrower of them, you're describing a Stego. Also useful for regular-grip spike hyzers that can mimic grenades, and FH/Tomahawk/Thumber cut rollers.

One word of warning/advice: Stegos can be thrown so that they curl/spiral when they hit instead of a more traditional skip. Took me a little bit to figure out how to actually get a regular skip from one.

Posted this a couple years ago...

"I threw mine on an approach yesterday on a hole 300' long and basically all up hill. It was a grenade over some tall bushes and a couple trees. I threw it and landed about 15 feet from the basket. It popped up and started to roll back down the fairway, managed to miss a couple of boulders half buried in the middle of the fairway. It rolled about 150 feet because of the wide rim..."

"Good news is I managed to save my bogey though."

What I didn't mention, was the roll was basically a zig-zag down the hill. Then fairway was only maybe 25-30 feet wide. After catching edge near the basket, it went all the way to the left side of the fairway, worked it way over to the right side of the fairway...

Rinse, repeat, rinse, repeat, rinse, repeat....

I am guessing it crossed the fairway at least six times...

Probably took almost minute and a half to two minutes of rolling total...

The guys playing with me were in stitches...

Important part highlighted....

That slow-motion-4-wheel-drive roll? I have experienced.

Damnit I'm buying a Stego

We appreciate the support!!

The Stego is ridiculous (as stated numerous times) but it truly is useful. I throw mine a ton on both BH and FH shots.

We have a local course with a 150ish ft hole to start the round. There is one lone guardian tree in front of the basket that prevents a dead starlight line. While most folks chip hyzer or try and flex around... I just smash the Stego on a forced anny and it does what the Stego does... Pulls out instantly, crashes down and flares up towards the basket. I've hit metal multiple times but haven't gotten it to stick yet.

In short... The STEGO is so bad it's good.

In addition... The STEGO funds nearly all of our projects so adding more folks to the Stego army is imperative to the growth of RDG.

Thanks a bunch to all whom throw and recommend the "Worst Disc Ever Made"

Thanks to the VIP mystery box I got to throw (and sign!) a Stego but that had to have been a good year ago now that I think about it. I heard you're making premium plastic ones, hope they're not sold out already!

The Amber Stego is probably the best we've ever had. You'll love it.

Pair it with a Tar Pit and you will be in business.

Well, I think I'm going to narrow it down to the Justice or the A2 for now.

While all of the Stego talk was helpful, it just limits my distance a little more than I'd like and getting it to skip if I need it to is almost impossible.

I think the A2 or Justice will just give me a little more flexibility out on the course.

Still open to other options and opinions though if anyone wants to share.
