Relax while making your drive?

When you get ready to make your drive what do you do just before the throw?
Do you try to relax and keep that relaxed feeling while you drive or do you relax then tense up when you start your drive?
I am usually tensed up while making the drive and I am wondering if it would make any difference in distance if I tried to stay relaxed while I was throwing?
 
I think thats why people drink/smoke while they play. Me, personally I just walk up think where I want the disc to go then launch it. For some reason it never goes where I was think-commanding it to go. I follow the same approach for beerpong, basketball and life. Honestly the less I think about the shot the more natural it is, some people can sit there and plan it out for a whole minute.
 
well I don't drink,don't smoke (what do I do?)and really wish other disc golfers would at least not drink on the course (but that's just me and a whole different kettle of fish)So I guess I am looking for an answer without any type of stimulants to help:cool:
 
Relaxing the tension in your neck, shoulders and back will make for a more comfortable throwing motion. Keep a strong grip and let 'er rip.
 
I don't feel like I am tense when I throw. Hopefully you are out there having fun and shouldn't stress about it. I don't drink or smoke either.
 
actually I try to have fun and for the most part do except its just taking forever to get good at this game and that sometimes causes a lot of stress.
 
Today

Today I found that an obnoxious tarheel fan that won't admit last weeks butt kicking from the wolfpack(41-10) didn't affect him, and his insistance on being a prick....it made me bomb the first hole at Reedy Creek. First time I've landed that hole within decent putting range and made the duece!

I think it's important to try and remind myself that I'm:

A) not at work
B) not a professional flinger
C) Darth Vader will not snap my neck for failing him if I shank it.

That being said, I still sometimes expect too much from myself when playing. There is this inner demon that is always insisting that each round should be better than the one before. When I start feeling like I'm putting too much pressure on myself, I try to take a moment and appreciate the natual setting around me. Whether its admiring a well maintained park or scanning for wildlife at a rugged woods course, taking a minute to tune in to just being outdoors and finding that therapeutic value can help to ground me. Relax and enjoy...its not always a run at one's personal best that necessarily brings out the best in a person (now everyone hold hands and sing, "kum-bay-yah") :)
 
I always try to stay consistent on every tee shot. I go thru a "Bagger Vance" process, visualize the flight of the disc then I visualize the process and throw. I always keep my body language silent before I start my throw and I always try to stay consistent on the amount of steps before I launch. This has helped me well, driving is the strongest part of my game, this has not helped me in putting as much :(
 
No matter what you do, do it the same every time, consistency is the key. This goes for drives and putts. If you have ever watched Tiger Woods play golf, he goes through the same steps right before he hits the ball. If you are more consistent on what you do before your shot, your shots will be more consistent.
 
I think it's best to relax before and all the way through your drive. It's more fun that way. The disc also behaves better because it knows you're relaxed.
 
One thing I have been doing recently is windmill streches. Spinning my arm close to my body forward and backwards. I do other streches but this one seems to help me the most. Instead of taking a couple of holes to get fully loose now I am completely loose on the first hole. Even when my throws are off in angle or release they still seem to stay manageable. My arm motion is just so much more relaxed and smooth even if I am throwing it full blast.

Not sure if this helps anyone but it certainly has been helping me lately. It seems like it is easier to relax if your throws stay manageable.
 
Me too. I miss more 12-20 foot birdie putts on the course than I want to admit. But I consistantly nail them left and right at home with my practice basket. What gives?

There is more "on the line" when you are putting for the real thing vs. practice. Whenever I miss a putt that I know I should have made, I grab another disc out of my bag and throw that one towards the basket. 90% of the time I make that second shot because I don't put so much pressure on myself in making it, I just throw it...
 
yah you just have to learn to relax. thats the whole thing about disc golf its meant to be more carefree than other sports. some people smoke/drink but you dont have to. if your having fun playing its way easier to relax

Haha, I do that, too! everytime. and I always make the second throw. It drives me nuts, because I know I can make those putts, but I freeze up on the course. I can even feel the stiffness when I toss a crucial putt - arms, legs, back, total rigor mortis, and then the second one drives right in. aaargh.
