I enjoy playing new courses, but the thing that keeps me coming back is challenge. If a course has pro par 4s, risk/reward, and challenging putting greens I'll be back whenever possible and these courses usually receive a higher rating from me. Courses should co-exist safely with with the surroundings, use the land to its full extent and rely on skill rather than luck and it is reflected in my rating when they do not.

9 Hole Courses
I have recently revised my views on 9 hole courses. If a course has 9 baskets and 18 pads I will treat it like an 18 hole course. Add 50% to my rating on 9 hole courses to see how it would stack up against 18 hole courses. For example, a 9 hole course I rated 2 discs, would be 3 discs if it had 9 more holes of similar caliber.
