A Charming Utility Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 26, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

(2.876 Rating) A short, moderate to heavily wooded layout that's cherished by the locals.
- NATURAL BEAUTY - This mostly wooded layout has some really eye pleasing lines. Other than hole (13) I'd say all the holes here look aesthetically average or better. This stated, none of the holes here have mind blowing looks either. I want to say that hole (3) was probably my favorite looking hole where the entire left side has a drop off element to it in addition to the heavily wooded tunnel shot.
- CHALLENGING - Slightly more difficult than the average course. Most of the lines to the basket are in the 10 to 20 foot width range. Players that can throw straight will have an advantage here over players that can bomb-it. I think the typical 900 rated player will average around par or a couple below.
- CHARACTER - Slightly above average. Nice concrete tees being 5 feet by 10 feet. Every hole has benches and all but one of these was under shade. There are shelters with picnic tables in the park and there's a deteriorating community board near tee (1). As for missing items, no alternate basket placements, no multi-tees and no practice basket.
- SHOT SHAPING - Lots. Any player that enjoys shorter technical courses will really enjoy this layout. Lines move left and right. Several lines require an "s" shot for the optimal play towards the basket.
- QUICK PLAY - I blew through this course in 40 minutes. I caught the tail end of what I thought was a small league gathering, but since the players were just finishing up as I started, I got a course that was basically empty. I figure a foursome can tackle this course in 90 to 100 minutes.
- LOCATION - Can you really go wrong with 36 holes at one location?

Cons:

A solid course with a few minor issues and some preferential features.
- BEGINNER FRIENDLY - Players with under 50 rounds in the bag should stay clear of this course. Way too many tight lines for players not adjusted to releasing at a consistent point. Chickasabogue should be a good course for Recreational players and Intermediates and especially for those that enjoy the technical side of the challenge.
- PAY TO PLAY - $1 to enter the park, which is worth it for this course combo.
- DISCONTINUITY - Really more of a note than a con, but tee (10) and the entire back nine is located across the park road from the front nine.
- CHAINS - The baskets are older Mach 3s. Many are rusting away and the number on top is peeling away in a couple instances. Hole (13s) number sign is missing completely from the basket so when a player sees two baskets down fairway with no observable number, a guessing game will ensue. I guessed correctly. I'll also note that the baskets are very hard to see in the woods on first play.
- UNIQUENESS - The course has a real monotonous feel to it. For a wooded course, it's actually one of the lower courses I've scored in terms of variety. Hole (13) and (14) are the only openish shots and the other 16 wooded holes all have a similar feel. All the wooded holes weave through a tall ageing canopy. As stated under the shot shaping pro, the lines will cut left and right, but the surrounding elements are always the same. There are no water elements to contend with other than maybe the shallow swale running thru the tree line on (14). Elevation is also not going to register for most players outside the region. Hole (3) maybe hits the 15 foot down mark, but its gradual over the entire 300 feet.
- TERRAIN - I would call this course somewhat cart friendly. A few too many nooks and tree stubs to make rolling around a cart a seamless experience. Not the best course for those with knee joint pain or walking difficulties
- PARKING - A gravel parking lot.

Other Thoughts:

A solid technical course offering several challenging looks. I personally was entertained through most of the course but eventually got tired of the same look hole after hole. Players that feel the need to bomb shots are not going to enjoy this course as much as others. I could see a player who throws 400 foot drives becoming frustrated about throwing putters early into trees. Still definitely worth a look see after a player has experienced the Admiral. From reading other reviews in the area, there's quite a bit of drop in quality after that course, so I could see the two course combo at Chickasabogue being some players second favorite place in the area. It's currently my second favorite, but then again I've only hit 7 area courses as of this review.
- NAVIGATION - No course map on site and the one online is very diagrammatic and incorrect for (13) and (14). No directional aids or cues. No tee signage on (14) and (18). The transition between (15) and (16) and also between (17) and (18) are both a bit of a double back. So why am I not listing navigation under the cons? Well, the pathways here are just so intuitive, that I guessed right every time.

Home of the Halloween Howler 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 31, 2018 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

+Historic course, one of the first 100 ever permanent disc golf courses
+Well-balanced design with lots of left and right curves and tight straight shots, and two open holes for more variety
+Lots and lots of trees means lots and lots of shade for the long hot summers
+Benches on EVERY hole, big plus
+A few trash cans that are emptied by park staff
+Tee signs in good condition
+Nice double-loop design brings you back to the parking lot for a refreshing beverage if desired halfway through a round
+Concrete tee pads for consistent traction
+Park has drinks and snacks for sale at the park entrance store & last time I went in the store they had discs for sale too
+Park has tent or RV camping and a river to explore
+One of two above-average courses in the same park

Cons:

-Really the only cons are the short length of the course and the lack of multiple tees or multiple basket locations. Obviously this course was constructed way back in the days when the best discs flew about half as far as the best discs do today

Other Thoughts:

Fun, fun, fun little course. So much variety packed into a small package. Sharp hyzers, sharp anyhyzers, slow-turning mid-ranges going left, right, and straight. Chickasabogue always makes me pack a couple of extra trick-shot discs in my cart since there's about every kind of fairway imaginable here (except for par 4s or 5s). Excellent place to take beginners. Campgrounds have heated showers/bathrooms for cold fall & winter nights. If you like short courses, they don't get any better than "The Bogue". If I could rate it 3.75 I would but I'll go with 3.5.

Gnomes of Zurich 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Dec 17, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

27-holes (three 9-hole loops). Easy navigation. For the original-18, 5'x10' concrete teepads, signs showing distance/shape, benches, trashcans.

Cons:

Dead flat. Single tee/pin position. Luck factor a bit high.

Other Thoughts:

The course winds its way under the thickly-grouped, small-/mid-sized diameter trees on either side of the entry road to a public park. After paying to enter, the small lot on the left is where tee-1/basket-9 are located, and the larger lot on the right will lead you to tee-10/basket-18, tee-1B/basket-9B. All three loops play in roughly a clockwise direction.

Other than the two wide-open, ~350' holes 13&14, the other 25-holes will play in the woods. These two and in-the-woods, 450', straight for 2/3rds, then hard left for the remainder 7B, are the three longest holes. Most of the remaining 24-holes fall into the 225' +/- 35' range, so this course is a about control, not distance.

From the tee, you'll need to throw a fairly even blend of left-/right-/no-turners. Turns vary in sharpness of subtle to extreme, but most are moderate. Most of the turns are required late - only a few mid-fairway. For the most part, throwing lanes are fair, but challenging. A wayward disc will likely be found, as the shule is not thick, but the trees are close together, so an off-fairway approach could prove to be difficult. To me, the luck-factor seemed a bit high - about 1/4th of the holes had thick clusters of trees (not quite a jailcell, but close) guarding the basket.

The new, additional 9-holes start on the same side as 10-18. Tee signs at natural, signs are handwritten, navigation is a little less intuitive (but not difficult - just need to look around a bit, as opposed to the auto-pilot of the original-18), a bit rougher (small tree stumps to catch your toes), and, on average, longer (hole-7B is ~450, and three other holes >270', while only 5 of the original-18 >270', and two of them are wide-open).

A fun and quick play, and popular - was teeming with people the weekday afternoon I played. Good place to work on your control game - worth a visit unless pure bombing is your delight.

Discing with the dead 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Feb 26, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Located in a large [600+ acres] county park, the course is separate from the campground and other park users except for hole #s 13-14, which cross the ballfield.
Its a technically tight course, resembling a series of odd-shaped hallways with lots of doors leading nowhere you really want to go. Novices will thrive only if they throw 50-150 ft. and land in the fairway, though the ground cover in the rough is such that you aren't likely to lose a disc---but the spiders and snakes might make you wish you weren't hunting for it. Gradual, slight changes in elevation are sprinkled throughout the course.
A nice variety of tee-off hyzers, anhyzers and straight shots give way to short or long birdies, or difficult recovery shots if you find yourself off-fairway. Shrubbery extends from the ground to 20-30 ft. high, and the large trees might leave a gap of 10-20 ft. before their branches start to shade out the sun. Several times only an unlikely tomahawk rescued my par. Much of the fairway is open hardpacked dirt or leaf/pine needle cover, so skips/slides can be expected. A total of 4 holes are 300'+, so a distance driver is unnecessary, though I did use a Wraith, underpowered, to great effect on hard corners. Each set of nine holes starts clockwise and ends at the parking lot, but you'll be out of sight of the public on most of the holes.
Tees are nicely brushed cement, and the tee signs, though simple, give distance and an accurate rendition of the necessary shot: their tombstone shape give tribute to an ancient cemetery located on a trail in the park.
Lots of animal life: whitetail deer, raccoons, cranes, blue herons, armadillo, salamanders, black cats, every snake you've ever imagined.
The interstate is about 1/2 mile away and you can hear it, but the park is on a dead-end past a neighborhood, and is completely shaded except for #s 13-14, so it feels secluded. No one will hear your screams.

Cons:

The course was created long before warp-speed drivers existed, so a lot of the tees are within 30-50 ft. of the last basket. Easy to find the next tee, risky to ignore those driving behind you.
The newest 9 holes have a lot of small stumpage, so watch your footing, though the rest of the course is fairly rooty also.
Humid and buggy during mid-spring to mid-fall.
Rain will leave shallow standing water in many places, and a downpour will put a foot or two of muddy water in some ravines.

Other Thoughts:

Store with snacks, drinks and a few discs for sale at the gate. Night golf fun if you know the course. Huge field to practice drives. Swimming at the river/beach, swingsets and playground at river and ballfield, 3-4 miles of hiking trails. Lots of undeveloped terrain for future course expansion.

Tight like prom night 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 4, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

Good tees, decent baskets though some chains were in bad shape there were never any catching issues. Very basic signs but they seemed to work, the simple drawing appeared very accurate.
3 loops of 9 let you mix it up from the parking lot if you desire.

Cons:

The 2 open holes seem out of place with the rest of the character of the course but I suppose it was a welcome change. Lots of indication that the place becomes a river on the front 9.

Other Thoughts:

This was a fun little course, rather short in distance but pretty tight and required some decent line shaping to make good shots. It was short enough that our daughter played a good bit of the holes. The course is right after the entrance gate to the park which costs you a buck to get into. The ground is rooty and seemed to be clay based so it was very skippy. The area could possibly get very buggy but it amazingly wasn't when we were out there.
This is the kind of course where you won't be learning how to throw 400' but you will learn how to throw 200' up a hallway consistently and accurately, which personally I value a lot more. I suppose the biggest criticism would be that it could get a bit old if this was your only course but with 27 holes to choose from it might take a while. If I was in the area again I would definitely play it.

Good Wood 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 26, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

Short but highly technical woods course. Well-defined fairways with decent shot variety and challenge, and with the exception of two holes, you're in the shade the whole time. The course consists of an older 18-hole course with concrete tee pads and a newer 9-hole alternate layout that has natural tee pads and new DGA baskets. Fairly balanced over the whole 27 holes, but the 18-hole course seems to have some repetitive right-turning layouts. The alternate 9-hole course is somewhat longer than the older 18-hole course and had plenty of variety over the 9 holes. The presence of the canopy has taken long OH shots out of the bag and force hyzer and anny control to the forefront of your round. The underbrush is neither sparse nor congested, so bad kicks off of the pines will still require a score-saving miracle shot or two. The pine needle carpet generates some high-velocity skips and add a dimension to the hole approach.

Each hole on the main 18-hole course has a marker with distance and general hole layout. The alternate 9-hole course has white markers with hole numbers only. Next-hole markers on some of those alternate holes to help navigation. Navigation on the 18-hole course was fairly straightforward and easy. Plenty of benches throughout the course. The 18-hole and alternate 9-hole course's layout brings you back to the parking lot after nine holes, regardless of the order you play them in, which allows easy refilling of water bottles and fresh clothes, if necessary. The ranger station/gate has some discs, drinks, and munchies that are always welcome in proximity to a quality course.

Cons:

The 18-hole main course shows some signs of it's age as the baskets have just enough discoloration to make them hard to see under the shady canopy of the Chickasabouge pines. Most baskets have hole numbers and high-visibility tape to aid in the optics, but they have seen better days as well. Navigation on the alternate 9 hole course was tricky a couple of times, but not impossible. The alternate 9-hole course still needs some beat-in and maybe some trimming to match to potential of the 18-hole course. Not a ton of distance on the main 18-hole course. Not much elevation in play, but enough to be respected on some holes. No water when we played, but a wet spring/summer could see some of the shallow ditches/creeks come to life and add an H2O aspect to the course.

Bugs. Mosquitoes and other flesh-hungry flying critters were out, even in the early morning. Bring the bug spray, leave the sunscreen.

Other Thoughts:

Fun course that kept the hot South Alabama sun from sapping too much energy. Old growth pines and plenty of wildlife on this tucked away course in LA (lower Alabama). A little repetition and not much D, but 27 holes of tight fairways requiring consistent execution and line-shaping make for a good morning or afternoon round just outside of Mobile.

Solid Woods Experience 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 2, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Being a woods course there are certain things I look for in my determination of whether or not its a good or bad course. First and foremost its pretty easy to navigate. Its been a long time since I played it so I can't remember if there were markers denoting where the next tee was but I do remember it was pretty easy and obvious where to go from hole to hole. Fairways are clean without many "wtf" trees lining fairways. Greens are fair with good putting lanes from almost all angles. There are even a couple possible par 4s on the course. As mentioned before the fairways are tight, demanding accuracy but at the same time very manageable unlike many woods courses which set a tee and a pin but don't manage to actually make a fairway between.

Cons:

Entirely technical course. There's need for a driver one 1 or 2 holes which are open (13 and 14) but other than that if you have a good Roc (or your equivalent) and a putter you could play the entire course and shoot pretty well.
Being from Birmingham where each of our courses has a lot of elevation there is not really much of that here so your options for types of shots are limited to doglegs and tight gaps.

Other Thoughts:

Chickasabogue is a standard woods course which will test accuracy off the tee. I tend to be very picky and particular with my feelings on woods courses and I'd have to say this one is pretty solid, though not exceptional. I'd heard a lot about it from locals in Birmingham and was happy I finally got a chance to play it.

On a side note while playing hole 13 I threw my drive to within a few feet of the basket (15-20 feet past actually) and as I was walking the fairway a black bear came out of the woods to investigate. He sniff my disc and the basket, looked at me for good 30 seconds and then lumbered back into the woods. My first wildlife experience on a golf course and pretty cool. But with that said I'd be cautious and aware when playing here.

Top Knotch Playin Field 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 5, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course offers a multitude of different heights, angles, and terrain. Being set in the woods offers a relief on a windy or rainy day, but still gives you a chance to test out your strength against mother nature on some of the back 9. All holes are a respectable length for any beginner or pro player, with optional tees for either devision. This is one of my favorite courses in the surrounding area because of its versatility, and its over all length. All fairways are either a pretty sharp shot or bigger than would have expected. Teepads are all big enough to get a could run off and the signs might be sub par but you can see for yourself what shot needs to be made. Difficulty levels on this course are well balanced between holes with ditches, and a few water hazards. The park is open for animals as well and is greatly shaded from prying eyes and the wind.

Cons:

Lots and lots of trees, but hey its disc golf. Also, I have never gotten a call from anyone when I lost a disc down there... so, don't expect to have nice people find it and help you out, thats a rarity.

Other Thoughts:

There have been several events on this course that have been a blast, and in the heat of the summer, the river is just a walk down the road and you can take full advantage of your $2 spent with a short dip to relax your playing muscles. If you ever plan on playing in Mobile, definitely check this course out, it makes the area so much more enjoyable.

Pros:

- Very easy to find each tee
- If you call ahead and tell the park you are coming they will allow you to play at night!
- This is a great course to work on your accuracy and it provides you with some good right hook shots as well.
- Every tee pad it concrete and well marked
- If you stop by the guard gate you can pick up some disc, food, and drinks (and they are not over priced)
- Lots of shade and it's got some places to sit on every hole, which is great when playing in big groups.

Cons:

- It's very easy to shoot in the negatives. Hole three is maybe the hardest shot on the whole course if you can't throw an "s" shot.
- The maps are not clear on what the actual hole looks like, it's just a wood post with a drawing on it.
- Lots of people drink out there and do other things so it's not always kid friendly
- There is almost always a ton of people on the course so play can be a little slow if you get stuck behind a large group of drunk rednecks that won't allow you to play though

Other Thoughts:

I do like this course! It's fun to bring my middle school club out to the park and play because it's challenging for them and gives them chance to work on their accuracy.

4) Many short technical holes

5) Doesn't favor either Right Handed throwers,
a nice change, quite a few right hand curves

6)Great beginner course, but not a give away course for moderately skilled players

7) Nice Fairways, surrounded by woods

Cons:

1) Too short, Longest two holes we're around 370' and 340'. Used a Roc for a lot of this course

2) Can Be VERY crowded

3) Alcohol is allowed, so drunks can be rather annoying

Fun in the winter 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 6, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This is a great course for all skill levels that really helps players work on accuracy and the short game. Beginners will appreciate the shorter distances on the majority of the front 9, though the fact that the fairways are pretty narrow in spots and surrounded by pretty thick shule make things a little more difficult than a pitch and putt type course. There are conrete tees on every hole, though they are a little small. They give you a smooth takeoff point though, which is important on this course due to the prolific rootage surrounding most of the tee areas. In the summertime, it's shady, which is a big plus in southern Alabama. However, the summer can be rough because this course is pretty much in a heavily forested swamp, which means the bugs are rampant. Nice pro shop at park entrance, camping just a short distance from the course. Perfect dark course for night golf (the park closes at sundown but if you're camping you have free reign). Lefties will love it, as at least half of the holes break right. There is good distance, including the only two field holes on the course, on the back 9. Lots of benches, garbage cans and signage. It's a nice fun course to play if there are a variety of skill levels in your group.

Cons:

Stagnant heat and God-awful buggage in the summer (but it's lower AL right?). Almost too busy to fool with on the weekends, and some of my fellow locals are really pushy when trying to hustle up games for cash. That part of it really gets old, and sometimes it really puts a damper on the round. Alcohol is allowed in the park, so drunks can be an issue. For righties, the preponderance of right turn holes can be a good or bad thing: good if you want to work your sidearm or anis; bad if you only throw from one side.

Other Thoughts:

I'm a Mobile local, born and raised, and I really take pride in the great courses in my hometown. If I was ranking all 11 courses that are within 45 minutes of Mobile, I'd say the Bogue falls somewhere in the middle. Not the best, but not the worst. On a weekday, it can be a lot of fun in cool weather. One other thing, it does cost a buck to enter the park.

Pros:

For those who like technical courses, this one is almost entirely that. Fairways cut through the woods in a variety of lengths and doglegs, with a little elevation on some. Lots of very precise shots required. Tight, but never to an unreasonable degree.

In a state-park-like park, with the course in an area to itself. Camping available, a short stroll to the course.

Cons:

Hardly a chance to throw a driver. It's virtually ALL technical holes.

As a previous reviewer indicated, if technical isn't your style, this course wasn't built for you. For myself, these holes are fine but a hole course of them is a bit much.

Pros:

Tee boxes- Nice cement pads on every hole with only one having a safety hazard drop off at the end.
Signage and Marking- 4 3/4 discs in my book and only misses the 5 because one tee sign is missing, but on an easy hole that is wide open and straight.
Benches & Bag holders- Nice bench and sometimes multiple benches on every hole. A new feature that we noticed that can only be described as a bag holder was a nice bonus.
Cleanliness & Trash Cans- I'm not sure if they were on every hole, but it seemed like it and the park showed it...No Trash! Beautiful!

Cons:

Disc Catchers- Lower than regulation height on more than a few occasions and some of them were in bad shape.
Anhyzer Hell- If you don't have an anhyzer shot in your repertoire or a slice disc in your bag the anny shots on this course will make for a long day as there are 8 of them.

Other Thoughts:

This was my first time playing this course and would definitely suggest it to anyone traveling through Mobile. The trees are just enough to challenge a person, but can get frustrating if you are having a bad luck day. I wanted to give this course a higher mark due to how much I enjoyed it, but due to the above cons found a 4 or higher unjustifiable.

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 30, 2008 Played the course:once

Pros:

Good tee pads on every hole. Good tee signs with distance and flight path on them for every hole except 14 (but it's an open straight shot 344') Good layout. Easy to follow map (get it from the toll booth, or check the files/links tab on this course - I will have a couple maps up soon.) Benches, and trash cans on every tee, also most of the tees have bag hangers so you don't have to put your bag on the ground. Not too crowded.

Cons:

Tee pads can be slippery when wet, and not all are flush with the ground (but very close). Too many left to right shots vs. straight or right to left.
Really there is not anything to truly complain about.

Other Thoughts:

If you want a kmz file of this course you can e-mail me at [email protected] and I'll send one to you. What is a kmz file? It is a file that you can open using google earth. It will show you a layout of the course overlayed on google earth.
If you are playing in the summer, you will probably want to bring some bug spray.
If you don't like treed courses, then you "may" want to pass on this one... however each hole is pretty well open for a technical or in my case lucky throw.
I strongly recommend this course if you are in the Mobile area.

Halloween Howler 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 26, 2008 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Very fun course. More on the wooded side of things but thats what makes it so fun. Has a few ace runs.

Cons:

Only thing I can think of is beating your discs to death on the trees.

Other Thoughts:

I played in the Halloween Howler so I got to play the temp course out in the fields as well. That was a great course as well. I really wish I lived closer to Mobile and I would be busting my ass trying to get people to put up the money to donate for name placement on the holes. Would make that temp course a perma course. Can't go wrong with 36 holes on site.

2+ years drive by

Pros:

This is a fun course to play for all skill levels. It is a mostly short, but technical course, that requires and rewards accurate shots. It is short and easy enough that newer players can enjoy the course, but technical enough that pro players will still be challenged.

The course is mostly flat, but the variety is awesome, with shots going straight, right, left, some shorter and some longer. There are a couple of open holes, a couple of really short, easy holes, and a couple of very difficult and challenging holes. The fairways are well defined. There are good tee signs, benches, and concrete tees on every hole. Navigation is very intuitive and easy to follow the beaten paths.

The course does loop around at the half way point. The entrance station has snacks, drinks, and sells discs. There is also camping allowed in the park. The course is fairly easy to get to and located away from the busier city of Mobile, which can make for a great disc golf weekend get-a-way.

Cons:

There really are no glaring cons when it comes to the course, unless you do not like technical courses, in which case this is not a course for you. Some people consider it a con that a course does not have more open bombing shots, but that is not what this course is designed for, and therefore, is not what you should expect when coming to play this course.

Other Thoughts:

I have played this course several times in tournaments in recent years. Each time I feel like I should shoot about a 10-12 down, but probably average closer to a 6 down. This course is simply everything you would want to see in a technical, wooded course. As with all wooded courses, there is always an element of luck in some of the very tight fairways, but if you throw accurate shots, you will be rewarded with good scores on this course. Blue level pros can probably expect to shoot around 6-12 down on this course.
