More fun than I expected 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 15, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Good baskets are in great shape and mostly visible from tees
- A lot of fun shots. Hole # 13 is in my top 5 favorite DG holes
- Good elevation change
- Don't necessarily need a certain shot to avoid obstacles/trees, but is necessary to have your shots finish a certain way to stick the green or avoid skipping over a cliff, etc. Made you think about which shot to throw and decide whether to go for it or not.
- The creek/canyon system plays a big role throughout the course. Almost feel like you are throwing over a river or pond on some holes, with the possibility of getting your disc back.
- A good change-up from the standard park-like DG course
- Good variation in distance with plenty of chances to air it out a little bit.
- Was quite rugged which also gave a good workout while playing. Half the fun was trying to figure out the best way to cross the creek/canyon.
- Found myself putting in a lot of different situations - on a hill, from a bush, low ceiling, combinations of all of those. Really makes you work on your putting game beyond flat, open puts with sure footing.
- Friendly folks. Passed a few very large groups that I would have stuck around and played with if I wasn't on a schedule.
- Nice, flat, big tee-pads

Cons:

- No signage and map could definitely use some updating as others have noted. Never did find the pad for 16 but just threw from 9 in the opposite direction which seemed to work.
- Distance listed here is inaccurate for several holes
- No benches, facilities.
- A few places with trash but didn't get in the way

Other Thoughts:

Have been in the area for a few months but was scared away by the reviews, but will make it one of the ones I play at regularly under the right conditions. I am probably int/advanced and it was a ton of fun. Played it on a 50 degree day in January which was about perfect conditions as far as I could tell. Threw about 2-3 shots on each hole to try out different angles and didn't end up losing any discs. Had a few go in the creek but was able to retrieve because like a lot of the other courses in the area, there isn't a ton of foliage this time of year so things kind of open up. For sure wouldn't want to play in the heat of day or after a rain.

Anyway, was pleasantly surprised. Going back and forth between 3 and 3.5 for a rating. With good signage, navigation, etc., kind of cleaning things up, could definitely be a 4 star course. I feel like it is worth playing for hole 13 alone.

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 5, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

Mentally challenging course (risk x reward)
Lots of Elevation change
Great for good players
Lots of walking
Almost no traffic
Great use of ob and basket placement(across stream and farmers field ob)

Cons:

No signage. Print a map or play with a local
Lots of walking in between holes
Beginners Beware, if you can't throw 300' with decent accuracy you will probably not be loving it
Avoid on a hot day
No trash cans and lots of littter

Other Thoughts:

Quite a few wide open holes with ob or drop offs in play. Challenge this course on a windy day and make a smart lay up. Pat yourself on the back, great course to practice good decision making.

A decent course that could use a lot of improvment. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 7, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Lots of elevation changes.
-Lots of wide open spaces.
-Tees and baskets are in very good condition.
-Difficult terrain makes it challenging for advanced players.

Cons:

-Lots of trash everywhere. Broken glass and other huge piles of rusted metal. Looks like people have been illegally dumping here or have in the past.
-No signage at all. Very hard to find tees, baskets, and where the next hole is.
-Some holes are just too difficult. Hole 4 seems almost impossible not to lose a disc.
-Very hard to cross the creek/stream and to get to various areas.
-Long walks between some holes.
-Needs an updated map.
-Would be impossible to play if muddy out.

Other Thoughts:

This course could be an amazing course. Unfortunately it leaves much to be desired. Signs would help dramatically, as well as flags at the tees and holes to help see where they are over the hills. I couldn't find the tee for hole 3, and couldn't find the basket for hole 8. This was even with the map I got off of this site, which seems incorrect as various holes have been changed. All the trash around the course is a huge bummer too. Between holes 2 and 3 the path is absolutely littered with broken glass everywhere. Having a bridge over the stream would help out a lot as well. I really wanted to love this course because its only minutes from my house and I like open courses with elevation changes, but next time I'll definitely go play elsewhere. This course was a disappointment.

Pros:

Great tee-pads all over the course. Pretty easy to navigate the course as well. The baskets are easy to spot, and are in good condition.

Cons:

Wish there wasn't so much walking in between the holes. It can be difficult to cross different parts of the river at certain places as well.

I was lucky to play with... 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 2, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is for the advanced player.

Plenty of challenges.

A great coarse to challenge your accuracy

Plenty of huge risk/reward shots

Cons:

If you arent a more advanced, be prepared to lose discs....or spend a lot of time looking for them if you miss your aimed shot. Use a spotter!
Do not play by yourself.

This coarse can be a disc eating machine

No signs or anything to help orientate where you are on the coarse. Remember if you are from out of town playing, I-70 runs east/west...it can be confusing...especially in the desert.

No bathrooms/ and could use a lot of water fountains.

If you have kids in tow...not very kid friendly.

It is a looooooong hike, be prepared.

I WOULD NOT WEAR SANDALS. I would wear closed toed shoes.
Especially if it has been raining....or starts raining.

Other Thoughts:

I was lucky enough to arrange a 'lesson' from one of our local pros and we just happened to meet at Matchett instead of the park where we were originally agreed too.

This older (50+) man knew that coarse inside and out and watching him navigate it was amazing.

After spending hours with me and my wife working on driving, he invited us to play the coarse with him.
Since he knew the coarse, the no signage didn't come into play with me...but, if I were trying to figure it out on my own it would be very confusing.

I expected him to spend an hour with him and he spent the entire afternoon with me and my wife, with 5 year old kid in tow. So, after hour 2 of lessons...he then invited us to play a around with him. After that, plus the coarse...the kid got bored and tired. There is a lot of elevation changes. She can normally handle hiking an 18h coarse, but this one kicked her ass. It is NOT kid friendly.
There are better family friendly 18h coarses' that I would prefer to go to in the Grand Valley just because my kids are almost always with me, rather than play here.

BRING H2O!!! IT IS THE DESERT. IT CAN HURT YOU IN THE SUMMER AND WINTER.
90+ plus is bad enough and in the summer it commonly gets to 110+...under the direct sun it can feel like 130.
In the winter it can get windy and the temp can get below sub-temps. That can dehydrate you just as easy as the hot.

Overall, I think it is a great coarse. However, I believe that this coarse is too advanced for me to play and enjoy. And I had the designer showing me how to do it.

There are plenty of people who can go shoot it all day long. I just know it is too advanced for me at this time.

**On a side note, I live here and I am tired of the desert. There are a lot of coarses around here that you do not have to go directly into the desert that I would rather play at. And if you want to play in the desert and want something really pretty to look at....Moab is 1 ½ hrs away. But, that is biased because I am tired of the desert.

What a course! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 11, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

Where to begin... This course is TOUGH! The risk reward relationship is huge here. Make a good shot and you're loving life. Make a bad shot and you spend 15 minutes finding your disc. The course runs through a bunch of gullies/arroyos/washouts or whatever you want to call them. There is a stream that runs through the middle of the course that is pretty much a small canyon. Shoot into the canyon and you're looking for your disc.

On almost all of the holes, the stream comes into play (with the exception of the first few). You either shoot over the stream or along it. One of my favorite holes you actually play down along the bottom of one of the arroyos towards the stream.

All of the holes I played (hole 1 seems to be missing) had excellent concrete tee pads and the number 13 tee is on top of a tall hill shooting out over the stream. What a great hole!

Bring a map, the map posted here was perfect. I got turned around finding the 11 tee but that was my own fault for following what I thought was a trail to the tee but wasn't. Other than that, I didn't have any problems navigating the course.

Cons:

Hole 1 seems to be missing. I looked and looked but couldn't find it anywhere. I did see what I thought looked like an old tee pad where the tee was marked on the map so perhaps it was removed. It did look as though there was some earth moving activities recently so that might have been the reason.

I played in the winter so the weather was perfect (a little on the chilly side, just the way I like it) but I can definitely see this course being a scorcher in the summer. Bring lots of water! There weren't any facilities and no where to get water during the round.

The stream/canyon can be a doozy if your disc goes in there but, that's one of the things that makes this course interesting. After rain, this place would be crazy muddy to try and navigate. I would recommend avoiding it when it's muddy (I stepped in a couple muddy spots and it was really slick).

Playing across the stream can be challenging as you have to cross the stream several times to get to the next basket or tee. It wasn't too bad if you can find the path most people use but if you have to go down there to find a disc it can be treacherous.

There wasn't a single sign along the entire course letting you know where you were or what hole you were on which is why the map is critically important.

If you are out of shape, it's definitely a work out. Take your time and catch your breath and enjoy the exercise.

Other Thoughts:

All in all, I really enjoyed the course and if in the area again with time to play, I would definitely go back to it.

Take your time, place your shots well, and enjoy.

Challenging Par 3 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 17, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Extremely challenging. Definitely the hardest par 3 course I've played yet.
-Great use of space and the surrounding geography.
-There were no garbage holes. Each one seemed to be thoughtfully designed and required careful shot selection.

Cons:

-Not a good place to take a beginner as this course is very unforgiving to misplaced shots, especially tee shots.

Other Thoughts:

YOU MUST USE THE MAP! I followed mine religiously and never once had to wander around for the next tee pad. I did have to search for a few baskets that weren't visible from the tee. I appreciated those basket locations though because it made for fun and challenging tee shots. I suppose that a basic sign at each tee pad showing the location of the basket would be helpful for the first timer (like myself). But after playing the course once no signage is needed.
Overall I'd say that this is a great course and I can't wait to get a chance to play it again.

Lost in Space 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 9, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course's strength and allure is its challenging layout across treacherous terrain. The gray eroded land beneath your feet, which has been aptly likened to the Moon's surface, is completely devoid of vegetation and was probably repurposed from some type of industrial operation. Many of the baskets are in extremely unforgiving locations where anything and everything can go wrong if your throw is a couple feet off target. Scraggly trees along an odorous stream can suspend a disc beyond reach in their thin, wispy branches. The middle of the course follows this creek. The designer made obvious use of elevation changes from one hole to the next. On the high side of the creek, your main objective is to land your disc atop the ridges of mini-ravines so that your next toss is not a blind one from the depths below. While you're not combing the land for your disc, running around in search of the next tee pad, or scouting ahead for the next basket, the panoramic views are pretty rewarding. Large mesas, mountains and arid plains spread out in three directions opposite the fenced backyards of a residential area.

Cons:

On nearly every hole, there is zero indication of what cement tee pad you're on, or which basket you're throwing toward. On one tee pad, an ever-so-faint number clung to the lower left corner in paint. As a first-timer here, get used to the idea of traversing ridiculously steep and crumbly ravines (some harboring the unpleasant surprise of trickling, rank water) to read the number on baskets just to be sure you're playing the holes in the correct order. It's possible to throw at the wrong pin and not realize it until you're standing at the next pad scratching your head.

Other Thoughts:

Absolutely, positively do yourself the favor of printing off the course map provided in the Links/Files tab, or get a hold of a friend who's navigated Matchett, before journeying out for the first time. If you own a pair of closed-toed sandals or river shoes, they may be worth their weight after rummaging around for discs down by the creek.

This course has huge potential. The concrete pads are laid professionally and the baskets are in good condition. With an investment of around $250 in numbered signposts at each pad and a raised flag atop the baskets, this could be a super fun lunar disc playground.

It will fool you! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 10, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

First 2 holes are nice warmups which can give you a false sense of security. Starting on 3, anyone who can throw 250+ and their disc goes right to left has to worry about the sharp drop and creek on the left side. The map is great! The tee pads are excellent and point pretty much right at each pin. Great use of elevation and distances. 13 has a great view, but when you look around from most tee pads or pins, it is great.

Cons:

Some baskets could use flags due to elevation changes and trees/bushes hiding the pins. Paint on tee pads has faded and the baskets could have arrows paingted to help point to next tee pads. If you haven't played before, you probably should take a spotter for a couple holes. We couldn't find the water faucet by the 13th hole. We looked south of the creek by the unfinished building and the foundation next to it. A dot on the map or better directions would be great. Directions to get to course could be better. It says it is a right if you are going East, but you want to go left (North) into the dirt lot. We had to U-turn at the light at 28 3/4 to go back. First tee is near the "dog waste" bag station.

Other Thoughts:

A number of the pins between 3 and 8 are set next to the creek where some might consider it high risk/ high reward, however I felt like it was just high risk since the areas around the pins were pretty tight. River bottom dirt/sand that are small to medium hills throughout, so wear hiking boots.

Great course that needs signage. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 24, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is the true "badlands" course on the western slope. You start hole one playing uphill around some big bushes, then you play over dry desert terrain that includes rolling dirt hills that merge into a narrow arroyo that plays on most of the holes. I really enjoyed playing this course because it has some good challenge avoiding the arroyo. You play over and down the dirt hills and even have to avoid some steep cliffs that drop down to the creek. The pads are nice big concrete slabs that are perfect for driving.

Cons:

There is no signage for the course at all. It's somewhat difficult to navigate and even find the course for the first time. There's no parking lot and we didn't see any designated areas. We just picked a spot to park in the dirt. Be prepared because this course is pretty isolated from any facilities.

I wouldn't recommend this course for beginners or rec players due to the technicalities of the holes. If you can't throw 250' to clear the arroyo on most holes, you will have a long round searching in the thick brush.

Although conditions were fine when we played it, I can see why it would be nearly impossible to play in wet conditions. A few holes require you to walk down into the arroyo to cross the ditch to the other side. When the ditch fills up, it may be risky to cross it.

Other Thoughts:

I liked the feel of this course and would play it again if in the area. If it had decent signage of any kind, I might have given it a 4 out of 5.

Favorite holes: #3, #5, #8, #13

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 27, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course is a great test for EXPERT/Advanced disc golfers. There are HUGE risks on a lot of holes. The punishment for a bad drive can be strenuous, and costly in strokes. This is a great course to throw grenades! You can be in one revine and the basket in another and you have to get your disc down to the basket!!!

Cons:

Walking around on this course is very difficult The ups and downs between the holes or retreiving errant throws can be scary. I played this course the day after a rain and there was water flowing on the normal paths, so we had to detour a lot. I was EXTREMELY glad I was playing with locals to help me around.

Other Thoughts:

I was pretty paranoid about my footing and loosing my discs, that I didn't watch the sky good enough. When starting there were storm clouds off in the distance but they didn't seem a threat. On hole 11 about the farthest away from the parking lot, we got hit by a huge Hail storm. This made an EXTREMELY tough muddy, shoe killing long walk out. Keep an eye on the weather here! I fixed the Latitude and Longitude on this site so you won't have as much trouble finding this course as I did.

So hot 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 15, 2007 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course does pretty well for itself without many trees. It has elevation, cliffs, brush, and water hazards. The cliffs and hills are much deeper than they appear at first glance. When I played the water was clear so disc retrieval was very simple. The views are amazing, Grand Junction offers a rare chance to see desert landscape within the borders of Colorado. The course is pretty unique. I have not played many courses like this one. I didn't see the drinking fountain but I think its great and necessary that they have one in the middle of the course. There are large paved tee boxes. One design characteristic that I liked was that it loops so you can decide to skip the last few holes if you desired.

Cons:

When I played in August it was very hot. My playing partner kept throwing in the rough, which is much more extreme than it appears at first glance. A few of the holes were wide open and boring. It was dry when I played but I imagine that when the course is wet it can be very muddy. The first few and last holes play in or near an area that is separate from the main course by a lot fence, it was pretty confusing. There were no signs to help with navigation issues so be sure to bring a map. Even with a map we were lost a few times.

Other Thoughts:

I'd take this unforgiving and rough terrain over a park course. Bring water, when I finished my car's thermometer read 110, it got pretty hot as it sat there without shade. I was tore up in the end from the combination of oppressive heat, distance, and cliff scaling. Probably due to the heat, I had the course all to myself. I would recommend this course to players who are down for an adventure. In that sense, I really enjoyed this course.

Good if you can find your way around 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 20, 2008 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course is set on very unique terrain, with ravines and streams running through the course. There are great views from many of the tees, especially on the 13th hole. The design makes great use of the terrain, shooting along and over the ravines, and using the scattered trees well to protect the pins.

The baskets were all in great shape, and the tee pads were large and concrete. There is a great variety of shots required here, and the holes offer many unique challenges. There is a nice mix of shorter and longer holes, and some holes that do a good job testing accuracy.

Cons:

The navigation on this course is extremely difficult. There are no tee signs, and no way of knowing where the next tee is, or where to shoot when the basket is not easily visible. I would not recommend this course without a guide or map (or both!), it took us more than twice as long as it should have to play the round due to time spent wandering around and searching.

This course is not beginner friendly, as it is easy to lose a disc in the vegetation along the bottom of the creeks and ravines. This is not a major con for more experienced players, but does present an added hazard.

Other Thoughts:

If this course were well marked and easy to navigate, it would be a great and unique place to play. As it is, the course gets very frustrating to a player who is not familiar with the course and doesn't know their way around. If you can find a local to play a round with, this course is worth a trip, otherwise I wouldn't recommend going out of your way to play it.

This course will be more rewarding for more experienced players with a variety of shots to draw on. The risk of losing discs with inaccurate shots, along with the challenges presented on many holes will make this a difficult place for beginners to have fun.
