L.L. Woods

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 7, 2023 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-- The basics are just about all there. Huge concrete tee pads (13 feet long, 8 feet wide at the back end, and 5 feet wide at the front); new blue Dynamic Disc baskets; excellent tee signs with all of the info, including a map of the hole; directional aids to direct you to EVERY hole; restrooms in the park; trash cans; some seating; water fountains.
-- Best holes: 5 has a basket basically on a peninsula, with a culvert 30 feet short of the basket and 20 feet left and a bridge behind the basket. 15 is a 266-foot RHBH anny. The culvert and several trees line the right edge of the fairway.
-- Maintenance is excellent.

Cons:

-- No map on site. Given the navigational aids, it's not a big deal.
-- A large part of the course plays back and forth in a fairly narrow part of the park. The walking path brings some safety concerns, but 4 and 9 are bigger concerns. They play parallel, so standing on one of the tees, you could get hit by a drive.
-- Missing T signs on 2 and 12.
-- Long walk from 12 to 13.
-- Tee sign on 4 says 382 feet; something was clearly moved because the hole is about half that length.

Other Thoughts:

-- Multi-use park brings you two covered pavilions with picnic tables and an outdoor basketball court.
-- Holes 9 and 16 have longer (natural) tee pads. They don't add a lot, perhaps 50 feet in length, and they don't change your line. There are signs at those longer tee pads.
-- Hole 6 looks pretty boring (324 feet, flat with only a couple of trees). However, 8 feet past the basket, the ground slopes down to the culvert.

Decent City Park Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 11, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

LL Woods Park is one of the most well kept courses I have ever been to, and from reading reviews, this is not unusual. Each hole have shorter concrete tees and a few holes have longer holes that are marked with wooden planks installed in the ground. The baskets are older and are showing their age but still have good bones and catch well

Though the holes don't have tee signs, each basket has a directional sign pointing to the next tee pad. Navigation really would not be an issue without the signs, but they are definitely nice to have. The course just plays back and forth in the skinny park.

The holes are relatively tame, but with the concrete drainage ditch and sidewalks meandering throughout the course, holes have a good amount of OB if you play on or beyond the paths. This is really the only true challenge of the course. There are quite a few ace runs with the lack of trees, which is a stark difference from the nearby, much tougher lake course.

Cons:

The course plays through a multi-use park. I played early on a Sunday morning, but the walking paths had tons of walkers and runners that come very close to preferred disc lines on a few holes. There is a sign at the beginning of the courses warning golfers of the mixed use of the park, which is definitely a necessary addition.

The golf really is not all that great. Beyond a few strategically placed trees, there is very little variety or challenge in the course. The longer holes at the end of the course literally have no obstacles to speak of except the playground on hole 18 *eye roll*. While the holes at the beginning have the occasional cluster of trees surrounding the basket. Shooting under 54 should be no issue for an intermediate player

Other Thoughts:

LL Woods is definitely not a bad course by any means, but it really has no qualities that elevate it to a good course. With it being on the shorter end, a single player could play it way less than an hour moving at a leisure pace.

Playing here and the lake would be a good 1-2 combo for an afternoon play. I wouldn't come out of my way to play here again, but would happily play here if I lived in town.

Fun for beginners and/or nice practice course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 20, 2019 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Concrete pads at all holes
- Sidewalks up to almost all tee pads; extremely cart friendly
- Almost impossible to lose your discs, unless you throw it over a neighborhood fence
- Nice mix of ace runs and bomb shots
- Indoor restroom facilities
- Water fountains and trash cans regularly placed
- Maintenance is done weekly

Cons:

- Lack of shade, it is hot as hell during the summer out here
- It is typically windy to very windy on the course
- No real elevation change
- Pedestrians are always in play, this is a neighborhood park and the sidewalk is OB on most holes
- Baskets need help, they are old, there is some chain detachment, and many are leaning
- Mosquitoes are an issue, there is quite a bit of standing water
- Hole 18 has you throwing at a playground.

Other Thoughts:

This is good course to take a disc golf curious friend out to get a taste, just make sure you do it early in the morning to avoid heat, pedestrians and mosquitoes.

A Normal Park Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 29, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

Fun for casual rounds- especially with beginners
Decent shot variety
Good variety of short and long holes
No way to lose a disc!

Cons:

Public Park - Can get crowded
Usually Windy
Not much shade - can be brutal in the summer
Generally flat and relatively unexciting

Other Thoughts:

This is a good course for those in the area. If you are outside of 30 minutes away this course isn't worth coming to. When I saw that a 2.5 rating was Decent/Typical it became very easy to rate.

L.L. Woods 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 14, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

L.L. Woods is a easy, open and fun course. There is great parking and easy navigation throughout the park. There are red tee signs that point you in the right direction. The only navigation issue would be the gap between 12 and 13 as there is a little walk. This course typically has a few groups playing so you might be able to follow their lead. Most of the holes are short ace run/ birdie opportunities. There are a few that will let you stretch out your arm such as the last 5-6 holes. Like I've mentioned this courses it pretty open so you can almost treat it as a "field session". I work on my flick on this course and my approach game.

Cons:

Most of the teesigns are missing. The park is heavily used so pedestrians can get in the way so you need to be careful when throwing. There isn't much variation but this course isn't designed for that.

Other Thoughts:

This is a easy clean park that is great to bring your family or dogs. The terrain isn't rough and not a lot of stickers. This is a great course to really work on your game. With the course being so open wind can become a factor and makes your utilize different shots. Having an open course like this with limited obstacles is great to see areas of improvement in your game.

I think most people who play this course aren't looking for the technical shots (We have other local parks for that). This is a fun family friendly park that lets you try different shots and enjoy the game.

Good for a beginners or a relaxing round 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 12, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Plenty of OB to increase the challenge, but still no threat of losing a disc
-Next tee box signs make navigation easy
-Great for beginners and low power intermediate players

Cons:

-Short tee boxes
-Not very challenging

Other Thoughts:

Difficulty (2/5): Not an overly long or technical course. Definitely geared more towards beginner players. There are very few holes that are completely wide open, but the course isn't heavily wooded by a long stretch. Lots of out of bounds created by walking paths and the concrete drain. This serves to add a challenge to the course without a risk of losing discs, which is really nice.

Maintenance (2.5/5): Every hole has a concrete tee box, but they were often very short. If you use any sort of a cross step on your run up, you'll need to start from behind the tee box. There weren't much in the way of tee signs, but there was next tee box signs next to the baskets, which really helped. Grass seems to be mowed regularly and the baskets were in decent shape.

Variability (2/5): There was always trees on each hole, but they were generally sparse and spread out. This meant you could usually use whatever line you were most comfortable with and shape it around the trees. I, for one, was able to throw a hyzer on just about every single hole. My playing partner really likes anhyzers, and was able to throw those just about every hole. The one really unique hole is the short par 4 island hole. It makes you decide whether to lay up for a very easy birdie, or go for a risky eagle.

Flow/Experience (3.5/5): The flow of this course is phenomenal. The holes lead right into each other, and the next tee box signs make navigation for first time players very easy. It's a multi use park, so we frequently had to wait for joggers/walker to pass out of our driving range on the nearby paths. It's in a pretty park, and was a very enjoyable round.

Typical Park course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 14, 2017 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- Nice tee pads
- Easy to navigate. Next tee signs with arrows at each basket
- Well maintained and some very nice landscape.
- Several ace runs
- Great course for newer players or for testing new plastic. Big open field to the side for honing in those Destroyers!

Cons:

- Fairly easy course and not much challenge
- Lots of traffic in the evening with soccer practices, people walking, bikers, etc. There was even a woman sittin in a chair in the middle of the 18th fairway the other day watchin soccer practice so I would play before 5pm or so to avoid all this during the weekdays.

Other Thoughts:

As most have already stated this is not a challenging course. However for me it is a perfect course to play right now coming back from shoulder surgery to get my power and form back. They are all par 3s and there are a few 400+ footers where you need a rip to park it. Lots of ace runs so bring your Rocs!! It is wide open so you will not lose any plastic. I recommend this for someone new to golf or comin back from a hiatus to work on form.

A pretty nice residential course for beginners 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 1, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

By far the most beginner-friendly course I've played in DFW since I picked up disc golf in June (I've also been to Denton, Bear Creek, Turner Park and Trophy Club). This can potentially be a con for more experienced players who are seeking a challenge. However, for newer players, L.L. Woods offers an easier intro to the sport.

Nearly impossible to lose/mess up discs on this course.

I encountered no hazardous wildlife.

Next tee location is marked with a red sign near the end of each hole. SUPER helpful for first-timers on the course.

Great course to introduce new players to disc golf.

Course appears to be well-maintained by the city of Lewisville, as it is a rather busy residential park.

Cons:

Lack of challenge. I've been playing about a year and I really only come here nowadays for forehand-only rounds and when I bring a new player along.

The vast majority of traffic on this course is people using the walking paths. Pedestrians very seldom pay attention to discs, so you've really gotta watch out for them. Many are elderly and walk really slowly.

Most holes have very limited tree coverage, so get there early in the day during warmer months.

Other Thoughts:

Probably the best beginner course in DFW. L.L. Woods isn't super long, but has some holes which allow you to let her rip.

Pedestrians aren't the most cordial here, it seems. I try and give a nice "Hey, how's it going?" to everyone I pass while I'm playing, but it seems I'm often ignored here (not the case at other local courses). Furthermore, the pedestrians here seem to walk slower than at other local courses.

Avoid this place on the weekends during summer months, especially early (8am and later), since the place is swarming with walkers. My dad and I tried to play a round here at 8 in the morning and maybe got to play 8 or 9 holes in over an hour, due to the insane amount of foot traffic. The tempo was wait about a minute for pedestrian to clear the area, throw off the tee, wait for another few groups of pedestrians to clear, throw your up-shot, putt, wait 1-5 minutes at the next tee to throw, etc. Brutal.

Fun Morning 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 27, 2016 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Mostly wide open; Good mix of long and short holes; Signage points out the next tee pad when unclear; Always lots of people playing; Well maintained

Cons:

Last third of the course is in the field, so in the summer it is hot; Not very technically difficult; Some of the distance signage is broken or unreadable; Can get crowded

Other Thoughts:

This is a great course for me because I'm in the relearning phase of disc golf. Because of the relatively easy layout and wide open course layout I was able to concentrate on throwing straight and work on my form while still playing a round. There is also almost no way to lose a disc on this course, which is a bonus for me since I'm notorious for losing them.

Saw Tyler Cook Ace Hole #18 @ LLWoods Feb9th,2016 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 16, 2016 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

LL Woods is a great course. Yes, flat, open and very few trees. Grass is generally well cut. Great park to learn your rollers. One restroom and 2 open drains. 2 water fountains, but only one works outside summer. It's a great day to day course, while we all await the return of the Lake Lewisville Course. LL Woods is a great course for Tuesday night minis, due to the Lewisville grounds crew cutting back all tree limbs to above head height.

Cons:

LL Woods is very multi-use, but mostly you just have to watch for walkers and bicycle riders going through your lanes. LL Woods does not drain well around the baskets after any serious rain. Some say LL Woods is boring: without the scrub brush & water hazards to loose discs in, Mesquite thorns to bite you, steep hills, valleys, cliffs, mud and ankle busting holes to traverse, trees to curse as they raise your average and wait,,,, Most of those perps saying these things have no Aces at LL Woods either.

Other Thoughts:

February 8th, I played a round with Vicky Robertson & Tyler Cook & a few others at LL Woods. The park was packed, we let 4-5 groups & singles play through. Tyler throws hard and was easily the best of our group. As we approached the 18th tee, the open field to our right, had well over 100 souls practicing on 4 soccer games, a little girls soccer training and a baseball practice. 2 preteen girls were kicking a ball very near the 18th basket, so we shouted to let them know we were teeing off. Tyler lead, but waited even longer for fear he would hit the girl closest to the basket. Finally he let rip his Innova Nuke wide & high over the soccer kids. It hit the basket so hard we could hear the chains from 327ft over the many kids soccer teams noise. When we stopped shouting to the newly formed Demi-God's powerful Ace, every single soccer practice had come to a halt and well over 100 Lewisville kids, parents and coaches were staring at us. The two latina girls saw it and were dancing off their swings. That magic is hard to describe. Yes, others have Ace #18 at LL Woods, but this was a first with so many now seeing the joy of why we throw discs.

Worth playing again 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 22, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

Real nice course/park that is maintained. Real easy to navigate except for maybe one hole transition. There's really no way you can lose a disc unless it falls in the creek, then it simply float downstream but when I went it wasn't even halfway full. Short and long holes throughout. Couple ace runs. Uses the trees real well.

Cons:

Lots of holes don't have a sign or marker. Tee pads were okay but some were just awkward. The first half of the course is all short holes it seemed, got boring kinda quick but no big deal. Very occupied park, lots of people walking so had to pause a few times before throwing. One hole is right by a road so if you aren't that good very possible to interfere with cars. Last hole is by the playground, can be dangerous if kids are playing around it.

Other Thoughts:

Overall nice course. It's kept clean and mowed. This course is more on the beginner side but has it's holes to try and challenge you. They did a great job of using the trees it has as obstacles. The short holes are very aceable which help keep it fun. And there no fear of losing a disc. I'll for sure come back again

Beginner Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 11, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Easy to find the first hole since it is next to the parking lot
- Park is well maintained
- Bathrooms
- Large concrete tees
- Easy to navigate for people new to the course with the exception of going to hole 11 to 12. There is a concrete tee slightly to the left and behind basket 11 that people tend to go to, so they end up throwing at basket 1. The tee for 12 is to the right, across the walking path and there is a tee sign for it
- Difficult to lose a disc. If you can't find your disc and you are next to the drainage creek, odds are you are going to have to walk/run downstream to find it
- The holes make the most out of the few trees there are on the course and can provide a slight challenge to newer players
- Fun ace runs

Cons:

- There is a walking/bike path that is alongside the majority of holes
- Hole 6 has a busy road that plays to the left which may be a problem for beginners or when the wind kicks up
- The basket for 18 has a playground to the left, a backstop that is often used for baseball to the right and a swing set behind the basket. There are often kids walking in front of the basket as well. (Should only be a problem for beginners or when there is strong winds)
- Distances are wrong on the tee signs that are there and haven't fallen apart

Other Thoughts:

- Beginner course that would be boring for an advanced player
- There are benches throughout the park but not at the tees, they are located along the walking path and can be in the way on holes 10 and 11 when teeing off
- Drinking fountain by the tee pad of hole 10 is only turned on during the summer
- Holes 1-12 are short with well placed trees that give it a little bit of a challenge but not much
- Holes 13-18 are the longer holes but are wide open
- The course dries out quickly with the exception of hole 1 and around the basket of 2

The Best Course In DFW! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Feb 21, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Flowing water in canals is never more than a few inches deep.
Avg play time for our group of 4 usually runs about 45 minutes.
In addition to its routine maintenance, various areas have been spray painted to mark future additions and modifications to enhance the course's features!

Cons:

Sidewalk comes into play on most holes so once or twice you may have to wait a minute for a sweet elderly couple to pass clear. Playground and practice field can occasionally make hole 18 a unique challenge.

Other Thoughts:

Hole #1: Aceable, short-drive/long midrange shot through trees with a clear cut path. Path arched left like a ")" *Don't overthrow*.
Hole #2: Aceable. Easy-drive distance with a left or right split depending on how you throw. *Sidewalk on right*
Hole#3: Straight and longer than previous holes. Basket surrounded by trees but birdie-able. *You'll hit the canal if you drive far left or overshoot a putt*.
Hole #4: Aceable. Split left/right for your choice of throw. *Keep throw low to avoid low branches*
Hole#5: Long-open and off-centered to the right. *Canal on runs along the left of the fairway*
Hole#6: Long-straight. *Tough drop-off behind basket into canal so easy on the putts*
Hole#7: Straight. Basket on a slight slope. *Canal runs along the right of the fairway and encircles the basket.*
Hole#8: Straight with trees lining left fairway and canal on right. *A usual headwind on this hole can send your disc way right or left so keep it low.*
Hole#9: Straight with trees left of the basket. Open and easy to carve your own flightpath.
Hole#10: Long-slight left- trees divide the fairway into a 2 halves (basket half/tee half). *Street on left lined with trees*
Hole #11: Straight and relatively narrow. *Low hung tree just past the tee...street on left lined with trees. Sidewalk and Tee#4 on right.*
Hole#12: Last of the 'shorter holes'. Straight but a wide shot due to the tree in the middle. *If you choose to go through the middle, keep it low!!!*
Hole#13: Long, straight w/ slight right. *We play this as a par 4 because the tall trees in the middle can be bitches*
Hole #14: Very long. Bomb shot. Restrooms on left hand side force a drive rightward as opposed to launching it wrecklessly.
Hole #15: Straight and across a ditch. *Big tree behind basket so don't overthrow*
Hole #16: Long-Straight-Bomb Shot. Trees spaced out along left fairway. *Sun setting can get right in the eyes on this shot*
Hole #17: Very long- very open. Let it fly baby! *Ditch beyond basket and slight-slope.*
Hole#18: Straight *Practice field on right and playground 10 o'clock to the basket. So watch unattended child who may have wandered toward the basket.*

Pros:

Lots of Good Looks.

Relatively easy to follow.

Great course for night golf. Open and a limited number of trees with a lot of choices for shots.

It would take an unfortunate miracle to lose a disc at this course.

Last few holes are long and open if you want to chunk one.

I'd give it a 3.5 as a night golf course and a 2.5 as a day course. I'll average those to 3 for an overall rating.

Cons:

In the middle of a neighborhood on a long and narrow track.

A few baskets are very close together and could be annoying for anyone not familiar with the course.

Joggers and dog walkers using the trails woven between a good number of holes.

The only bathroom is near #1 and it is an open course in the middle of a neighborhood.

Other Thoughts:

The ground was hard and the grass short when I played this course. I noticed discs were skipping quite a bit more than my home courses. Players should be careful not to overthrow because of an unexpected skip.

Cons:

No apparent course map available

No marked baskets
Some baskets too close to others and being unmarked makes them impossible to tell which one to throw to
Would be nice to have alternate tee or basket options - plenty of room for that

Other Thoughts:

This course was very frustrating to play for the first time since no map was available and the tee makers, maps, and basket markers were often missing. Otherwise this could be a decent beginner 18 basket course since it's nice and flat but often challenged by wind.

I don't think anything I posted was untrue about the course, if you are to play the course today for the first time without a map, I'm sure you would run into much of the same issues that myself and the folks I was playing with did above. Not trying to offend anyone. I appreciate constructive feedback so I can improve future reviews for this and other courses. Thanks!
