Great 18 for the area; unforgiving for beginners 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 16, 2020 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Large park with plenty of land devoted to the course.
- Excellent variety of hole design and difficulty level.
- Nice elevation changes are creatively incorporated into the course, including a tee pad perched on top of a sled hill.
- Tee pads and grounds are well-maintained, and a few holes offer 2 baskets.

Cons:

- Missing the fairway on the front nine probably means a long search in very tall brush and weeds.
- Windy conditions make this course much less enjoyable; it's the highest point in the area, so on windy days this course gets strong gusts pushing up the hillsides (and under your disc).

Other Thoughts:

I really like this course overall and can safely recommend it, but it can be frustrating at times. This is a very solid intermediate course. Veterans may find many holes too easy, and beginners will struggle with blind baskets and punishing rough.

The front nine plays around the rim of a large water reservoir, surrounded by steep hillsides that are covered in very tall wild growth. Beginners should be prepared to spend some time in there searching for discs, especially on windy days. The back nine is very fun, but can be inconsistent: #10 is a signature hole with a tough blind downhill dogleg left... but #11 is a short straight hole with a tree in the way.

Fun and challenging 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 4, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

Well spread out 18 holes. Love the elevation changes throughout course. One of the better maintained courses I have played. Easy to find next tee box.

Cons:

Bit challenging for beginners or recreational players. Few baskets are to see from tee box. Unforgiving tall grass areas, good to have spotter for majority of holes.

Other Thoughts:

Well planned out course; loved the challenge of wind, trees, and natural areas throughout course.

Scenic Course with Elevation changes 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 15, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Well Maintained fairways, greens, and the rough is mostly free of weeds. If you have a spotter, actually retrieving the disc shouldn't be difficult.
-Hole 2 is a cool shot with the basket on the blind side of down sloping hill.
-Hole 3,4,5,6 are elevated above and alongside two reservoirs making them very scenic (and intimidating).
-Hole 15's tee is at the top of a large sled hill, which I thought was fun to throw from.

Cons:

It can be easy to lose a disc if you throw off the fairway without a spotter.

It's a minor inconvenience, but you should be aware of walkers on the paths in case you throw a bad shot by mistake on some holes.

Underrated Chicagoland Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 8, 2019 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The sub 3.0 rating (at time of my review) on this site always seemed unfair for this course. This course started with 9 holes and expanded to 18, but the reviews for the course still include the ratings for when it was only 9. Since they have made it a full 18, this course is in that 3.5-3.75 range for a very solid course, especially for players in Chicago looking for a change from Legge/ 50 Acre that's closer than Fairfield/Joliet.

- This is a decently designed course with elevation change used as well as possible for a Chicago suburb. This is even more true when playing the alternative tee's and baskets, which raise the level of difficulty above the "intermediate" level this course plays at for the standard 18. Hole 15 plays from the top of a sled hill, but immediately after you must throw back up another large hill on 16, the course's toughest 3.

- While there are no pure "bomber" holes, there are several challenging par 3's. Hole 9, 13, 15, and 16 are all around or over 400 ft.

- Shot variety is good, especially when you reach the back 9. The front is nothing to write home about (you can basically throw the same shot on 3, 4, and 5- see negatives below), but the back is far more varied and interesting.

- Good baskets, good tee-pads, good signage. Navigation is a breeze as well. Some potential to hit runners/walkers, but this has never been an issue I've experienced.

Cons:

- The front 9 is not dynamic. Holes 3-5 are a bore. If you can throw a semi-straight 300-325 foot backhand, you can be putting for birdie on 6 holes on the front.

- This course lacks a signature hole. The closest you can come could be 9, 15, or 16, but I've seen better versions of all of these holes at other courses within an hour of Chicago.

Other Thoughts:

This course is solid, and is definitely not a 2.9 rated course. If the whole course played like the front a 3.0 is fair. If the whole course played like the back, a 4.0 is fair. Hence my 3.5 rating. It is encouraging to see a course expand and improve like this one did.

- For a Chicago-based player with fewer options than I'd like, this course, Legge, and 50 acre all represent solid, similarly rated courses to enjoy.

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 27, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course is set up in a pretty much disc golf exclusive area. The park itself was in fantastic shape when we played it. All the fairways were well defined as far as mowing. There are concrete tee pads on all the holes. These are a little on the smaller side but work just fine here. All were level and gripped nicely. The baskets are Mach 3's that were all in great shape, mounted nicely and catch fantastically. A few holes (3 I think) had multiple pins per hole set up which is cool. All were on the back nine. The flow of the course is very intuitive and easy to follow throughout. The front nine is on the south side of the road with the back nine being on the north side. The course starts and ends close to the parking area which is always nice. The tee signs are pretty basic but have all the pertinent information needed on them. Hole number, par, distance and a basic hole diagram. A few signs guiding you to hole 10 across the street as well. There is a great amount of elevation changes here, this is the best part of the course design in my opinion. The course is free to play.

Cons:

Not many trees to contend with if that's your thing. This is pretty much all a prairie style course. This probably isn't the best course for beginners, even if it isn't windy, which probably isn't too often. The wind and elevation combine to create a good challenge factor for more experienced players but would be frustrating for new players. Not really a con per se, just worth mentioning. It wasn't really a factor in late October, but I could see the grass off the fairway getting long enough to make searching for shots off the fairway tough. The course isn't in year round due to sledding in the winter months.

Other Thoughts:

This is definitely the best course in the nearby area. If you're near here and can't play Fairfield this may be your best bet. I haven't played all the nearby courses but judging by the 13 or so nearby courses I have played this was the best. Not a destination course by any means but a pretty fun round for most skill levels. Overall this is probably between a 3 and a 3.5.

Decent and Improving Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 3, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

-well-groomed course, freshly mowed
-great elevation change for Chicago area
-nice newer concrete tee pads
-course seems to be continuously improving and has been expanded from 9 to 18 holes
-front and back 9 both have clear start points near parking
-nice tee signs
-garbage cans at some holes help keep course clean
-alternate basket options on some holes add some interest, though they are pretty basic alternates
-nice mix of hole lengths to provide for beginners as well as still challenge experienced players
-tee sign for 14 is helpful

Cons:

-navigation on hole 11 is a bit weird
-some of the rough is so tall you will never find your disc
-next tee signs would be helpful in a few more places
-hole 15 sign appears to be missing/tee is not consistent
-most holes focus on distance more than any real technical challenge

Other Thoughts:

This course is worth a play and seems like it can be fun. There were a few things that frustrated me that I suspect would disappear with repeated play.

One, and this is kind of embarrassing, is I literally threw the opposite direction on Hole 11. I'll maintain some of the mowing patterns here are a bit odd and the area behind the tee seemed more open... but eventually turned out to go to nothing. My fault there though.

Hole 15, as far as I could tell, was a bomb from the top of the running hill. There was no tee sign and no concrete tee like all of the other holes, so while a fun one to throw, it was a bit odd.

There were one or two places I could have benefitted from a next tee sign, having never played the course. With another play or two, this would not be an issue, but a few times navigation was not intuitive. Ironically, there are 2-3 next tee signs here, but they were mostly in places where they weren't sorely needed.

The maintainers seem to be improving this course over time, and the reviews seem to be getting better with it. They have added concrete tee pads and expanded from 9 to 18 holes. It also looks like the tee signs have been replaced with improved ones. They even have a wooden fence built around one of the tees to protect throwers from discs flying down from the previous hole - I love this! The clear starting signs for the front and back 9 near the same parking area are very nice, especially for league and tournament play. In general, the course was very well-maintained as long as you don't go into the rough. I did lose one disc (my own fault for where I threw it) in grass that was almost up to my waist. You could look for your disc forever if you get into one of those areas, but for the most part they are away from the main fairways.

The course plays around a reservoir (two, really) that admittedly could lead to some major losses if you went way off course. I didn't have issues with this and most of the fairways keep you well away from the truly steep/dangerous slopes. The downside is they pull the baskets in winter, probably to help discourage people from going near the reservoir when it is semi-iced over.

This course didn't exactly wow me, but it is a solid course that is well worth playing if you're in the area. I prefer a bit more technical challenge and I feel like most of this course just wanted to see if you could throw over 300' consistently. To be fair, there are some shorter holes for the beginners out there, and I think this course could appear to most skill levels. There are some alternate baskets which are kind of fun.

All in all, I love the commitment Palatine seems to have to the park and I'll probably play it again when I get a chance. The baskets, tees, signs, and fairways are all in great shape.

Cons:

I really like this course especially after they added the back nine, but it's not really the courses fault but some more wooded holes would be nice. Changing the placement of the pins on some holes could add some more difficulty.

Complete course built on hilly land 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 27, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Concrete Teepads
- Tee signs at each hole giving lengths and approximate hole shapes
- Elevation is used to enhance the holes
- Dedicated parking lot
- Clean
- Shorter Technical Holes

Cons:

- Fairly wide fairways
- Windy days make this course a lot more challenging around holes 4-7
- Thick brush on sides of hills can be difficult to search
- occasional pedestrians
- I've seen garter snakes here

Other Thoughts:

This park is built around two retention ponds, 1 sledding hill, and some marshlands with a few walking trails snaking throughout. The holes are generally on the shorter side with a fair amount of small trees and bushes to provide some obstructions. I have found this course to be a good place where players of a variety of skills can all enjoy themselves.

Be careful of the wind around hole 5-8 because it likes to carry discs down the hills into the retention ponds. Similarly its easy to turn a shot over on holes 17 or 18 and land a long way down the hill.

The only thing I can really see improving this park would be having larger trees or bushes. Many of the small bushes and trees look like they were planted in recent years. I wouldn't make a roadtrip to just to play this course, but it is worth playing if you are already in the area.

Cons:

- improvement year after year
- fairways opened up
- 9 holes added a few years ago making it an 18
- diverse hole placement
- wind makes for a challenge as well as the tall grass off the fairways

Cons:

- the wind picks up speed off the hills making it hard to judge how it may hit the disc at different elevations
- needs a snack stand and pro shop as well as another 9 holes to make it a destination course, the room is there
- needs more trees in my opinion

Other Thoughts:

This is a course that has been growing with the sport over the years. If you're not near Round Lake or Lockport this is definitely the best course in the area with the second probably being in hoffman estates. All in all a great practice course to grind down the rough edges in your game.

Pros:

Clean, well kept, and challenging. The baskets are in great condition. Tee pads are concrete, although a little short, they get the job done. Tee signs are up-to-date with the holes.

The flow of the course is strong. The back and front nine of separated by a road that is easy to cross. Foliage maintenance is on point. It is not hard to find your disc when it enters the shit. Trash bins are present at most tees boxes.

Elevation is used strongly to make the course more challenging. There are a few port-a-potties on the sit. There is a variety of hole distances, but most of the holes are pretty narrow. The parking is towards the small size and the scenery is on point. Every time I play at this course it is never busy.

Other Thoughts:

Managed to play with the Super Intendant of Recreation in Palatine. He has put a real effort into turning this course into one of the best around. I highly recommend this course to anyone looking for a good challenge. He walked us through each hole. Enjoy the walk!! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 9, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is definitely a niche course that's all about the elevation. Not a wooded course, but used what trees were out there effectively.
The usual pros: good signage, decent pads- pave stones on front nine, concrete on back nine...(except #15- read that in cons)
Well manicured and relatively easy from hole to hole( exception in the cons)
Several memorable holes:
#2- throwing blind downhill to a basket in the middle of a down hill.
#5 Big dog leg right around the trees to a basket at the bottom of a hill.
#10 Basket protected by wall of trees and shrubs
#11 Big downhill throw
and #15 Top of the world throw very reminiscent of Bryant Lake's (Minn) signature #17

Cons:

Pads were a step short for my liking.
#15 tee was not defined- just a bunch of prefab stone things all over the top of the hill with gaps in between just waiting to twist an ankle!!
Walk from #12 to #13 was confusing... #13 tee is across walking path to right of #12 fairway.

Other Thoughts:

Lots of exercise gained walking this course. Lot of elevation utilized on almost every hole. In Chicago for a work week, getting around to as many courses as possible. This is top of the list so far.... Definitely worth the stop!!

Underrated gem 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 20, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Excellent use of the elevation around the reservoir. Distance for most holes is give/take 300' which makes it approachable for beginners but still challenging enough for veterans to get 2's and take 3's. Trees/shrubs prevalent throughout which help add to a course that is somewhat open. Big guns don't always win here. Finesse pays off too. Underrated for the area being an 18 hole with a variety of distance, elevation, and shot selection. Well maintained.

Cons:

Tee pads lack. Most are brick paver with some concrete on the newer back 9 but all concrete and longer throughout would elevate this course substantially. Somewhat of an "open" course. Baskets removed in winter... Total bummer!!

Signature holes #11 and #15 from the top of the sled hill are a pleasant surprise.

Cons:

Other Thoughts:

I agree that the added 9 holes now make this course very fun and challenging, more so on some days, depending on wind. I gave it 4 stars since it is one of the better 18's in this area, but not 5 since it does lack a few more obstacles here and there to make it next level worthy. It is true, the wind and tall grass later in the year can cause frustrating searches for poor disc throws. The two reservoirs are what look like old quarries. This prairie has been undisturbed since the glacier left this area 10,000 years ago. These are the plants that the Native Americans saw, and the first pioneers who set foot in what was to become Illinois. It really is beautiful. The 7 1/2-acre Palatine Prairie is a mixture of seven or eight types of grasses and more than 120 species of flowers that are native to Illinois, including rattlesnake master, wild quinine, prairie rose, wild garlic, blazing star, mountain mint, prairie dock, nodding wild onion and compass plants, members of the sunflower family that reach seven feet in height. Each season is unique at the prairie. Early spring is totally different from mid-summer, for instance. To really appreciate the prairie, you need to come out every few weeks. The Palatine Prairie is a place of discovery. You find something new every time you come out! Along with plant life, the Palatine Prairie is also a popular hangout for butterflies and the local grassland bird population. Common sightings include meadowlarks, gold finches, song sparrows, red-tailed hawks, American kestrels, chimney swifts, common yellowthroats, eastern kingbirds and mourning doves. And great blue herons are occasionally spotted flying overhead.

Pros:

- Only 18-hole course in the area
- Holes well marked and easy to follow
- Fairways well kept
- Baskets in good condition.

Cons:

This is a fairly short course, with few obstacles. Previous reviewer is correct that in 5-10 years, when the small trees grow in, it should add challenges to an otherwise straightforward and simple course.

Other Thoughts:

Stay on the fairways and your round will go quickly. Stray from the fairways and the tall grass will eat up your discs. ... Went on a day with 10-15 mph winds in the area. But with how open this course is and with the wind off the small lake, wind felt much worse. ... If you're in town, this is a must play -- it's the best course in the area. But please temper your expectations because the courses in the area are pretty weak.

different from other Chi area courses 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 21, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

Most of the reviews of this course were written on the front 9 only. But it is now 18 holes -- the back 9 just went in a couple weeks before I played it and are currently natural tees. There are a lot of smaller trees that don't add much to the challenge at the moment, but in 5-10 years, the trees on this course will be substantial obstacles. The back 9 has several really nice holes, I especially liked 11, 13, and 16. 11 is a big downhill shot with some obstructions to the drive and a narrow landing zone, and on a windy day this could be really tough. 13 is a long straight shot on a side-sloped fairway, with a right turning approach at the very end -- this one had a unique feel to it. Hole 16 was an sharply uphill dog-leg right with a thick row of trees defining the dogleg; this one played a lot longer than it is, and it was the toughest 3 on the course IMO.

The high grass presents a significant hazard on several holes, and helps define some fairways nicely. Not hard to throw out of, but could take some time to find discs. If the high grass was played as OB, it would be a really technical course.

One of the biggest pros for this course is that it offers really significant elevation change, and from what I've seen that is pretty rare for Chicago area disc golf.

Cons:

There are quite a few holes in the 240-280 range, especially in the front 9, where there is not as much variety as the newer back 9 holes.

There are not enough big trees on this course, but this will develop over time.

A couple of blind baskets is kinda cool, and you expect it on par 4 doglegs. But this course had several blind shots, and it gets annoying when the baskets are blind on par 3 holes, for no apparent reason.

There are no true par 4 holes on this course.

Other Thoughts:

When I was there, something had died in the brush by hole 12 and 14 baskets, OMG the stench on a 90 degree day was freakin horrible, even with the wind.

I give this course a bonus +0.5 because the Chicago area has so many bad courses, this one is pretty solid by comparison. If it were located in an area that had better courses I might give it a 3.0, but I am giving it a 3.5.

Expanded to 18 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 18, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Considering the lack of trees in the park, the course is fairly challenging. The best feature of this course is the use of elevation changes, holes 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 12, 15, and 16 all feature it. If you are looking for experience playing on hills there's really nothing like Margreth Riemer in the area. The lack of trees makes playing the hills a bit easier but the course is also more susceptible to wind because of it. The resulting experience that a disc golfer gets at this park is unique in this part of Illinois.

Some of the holes use elevation to keep you on the fairway, or you pay the price. Holes 4, 5 & 6 play along the reservoir's fairly steep bank, and a bad shot off the tee can have your disc rolling all the way down to the bottom. Holes 7 & 8 also have a steep bank along side the hole, but it's not as tricky to negotiate.

The new holes on the north side of the street play around the sled hill. For the most part they're more of the same, but better thought out than the first nine. The few trees that are around are used effectively to make the holes as challenging as possibly. Holes 11, 12, 15 and 17 are the stand out fun holes for me. On a number of the new holes you can't see the basket from the tee and that will make your first time through the new holes a bit tricky. Hole 15 tees from the top of the sled hill providing an opportunity to go big with a large landing area near the bottom of the hill. The view from the top on a clear day is also amazing.

As the trees in this park mature, the new nine holes are going to improve. Holes 11 and 18 stand to improve the most as they age with loads of well placed small trees right now.

Previously my review of this course cited the poor mowing as a serious downside to playing here. This course is about ten minutes from my house but I've hardly played it this year. After spending more time looking for discs in long grass then playing last year I'd stopped going and would drive further to Shady Oaks or Black Bear. The other week I gave Margreth Riemer another try and boy have things changed. The parks department is now mowing the course to maintain 'tournament conditions' and the previously miserly fairways are now realistic for players of the sport. In the past two times I've played the course with these mow lines I've only once gone into the rough. This is such a vast improvement that I'm re-writing this review and upping my rating.

Cons:

Everything isn't perfect in this park. As with all multi-use parks you have to share with other people in the park. For the most part this hasn't really been an issue except for two distinct types of park visitors.

First, the park seems to attract the most selfish mountain bikers I've ever come across. These folks pay absolutely no attention to anyone else in the park other than themselves. I've been on the tee about to drive and had a mountain biker zip past me right into the fairway without any notice. A few milliseconds later and that cyclist would have had a disc hit her smack in the head. I've had to wait for mountain bikers while they circle trees oblivious to the fact that they're on a hole that a group is playing. I've been pushed off paths as a group of mountain bikers plow through. I haven't seen this behavior in other area parks; just in Palatine.

The second group is dog owners who don't leash their dogs. Again I've been on a tee waiting to drive and had to wait even longer due to some dog owner chasing after their loose dogs right into the fairway. I've had discs chewed by loose dogs and the owners don't care. The park rules are pretty clear about leashing pets, and most park visitors do, but the ones that don't definitely detract from enjoying the course.

Other Thoughts:

The baskets are inexplicably pulled for 6 months of the year. I can understand three months, maybe, but half the year is too long to go without this course being playable. Especially when the long grass is most manageable in the early spring.
