Pros: more interesting/challenging than the other course on campus. fun, quick course. almost aced one of the holes.
Cons: VERY difficult to navigate, some holes are close to lake. dirt tee-pads.
Other Thoughts: a full map at the beginning, and better marked tee-signs would have made this course more enjoyable. also, remove the dog-legs. i believe that you should be able to play the course however you want, and if that means you wait for someone on the sidewalk to pass, so be it.

Pros: -Good exposure to the game of Disc Golf in the area nice addition to a college campus. There are no other courses near by other than the SIU Rec center.
-The 9 holes make use of a very small piece of land nicely.
-Holes are relatively short so a midrange and putter should be plenty

Cons: -Navigation without a map can be difficult at times
-a few fairways cross a bit as it is a very tight use of land
-no benches or trash cans(but it is pretty short and on campus)
-Tee Pads are dirt and muddy(rain the past day)
-Tee signs had the tee pad and basket but were not oriented to the direction of play. Some were reversed so it was difficult to follow

Other Thoughts: I am an out of towner on a business trip and had some time to kill. I packed a few discs in my bag hoping to play a little somewhere during my trip. First off, I think it should be said that this is a college campus and probably put together to expose college folks to the game, provide a rec activity on campus and maintained by the College so it falls into a slightly different category when comparing this course to most other county parks and such. You're not going to go out of your way to come to Carbondale just to play this course nor the rec center course BUT, it's a bonus when you're here. Treat it like a warm up, a "pitch and putt" to work on your game, or just a chance to play disc golf when you're in the area. Remember, it's better to play than not to play.
The holes all fall on a small piece of campus that is very flat with a good portion of trees, a nice lake and a pavilion to shoot around. It makes use of the land decently although some fairways to cross others. When I played walkers were not a factor but I can imagine it can get quite busy out there during most times of the day. Par is set too high. All holes should be par 3. If you can set a challenge to play every hole in 2, (with the exception of hole #3) it could be fun to play this course a lot. Sometimes, it's good to leave the drivers home and improve your short game.
I gave this course a "2" as I think it is a very reasonable course and offers both an opportunity to play the game, obstacles, and slight differentiation from hole to hole. It's not a place you would go out of your way to play, but if you're in town, bring a few discs and play, it's worth it.

Pros: SIU Lake is located near a scenic lake on campus. It is a flat piece of land that has quite a few large mature trees. There are some highly used sidewalks. The grounds are mowed and clean like you'd expect on a college campus.
It's very beginner friendly and exposes the game to college kids. Most of the holes are very short but require a quality shot.
Hole #3 is a pretty nice adv/pro par 4 with the basket tucked into a nice area for a green.

Cons: The tee pads were natural and many dirt. I'd imagine they get muddy after rain.
Many tees and baskets are close together. The addition of walkers makes this a busy place.
Navigation can be an issue for the first time playing.
I was disappointed the lake did not really come into play unless you threw a really bad shot.

Other Thoughts: Having the Rec course right down the street is a bonus for SIU students. They are 2 drastically different courses which both offer great practice areas.
Playing from #4's tee tp #6's basket is pretty sweet!

Pros: I did enjoy Hole 4 or 5, going over part of the lake.
Cons: To crowded, even for a Sunday morining. The ground was to muddy, at the tee boxes. So baskets were to low. The extra tee boxes for 9 - 18 made it harder to play 1 - 9.
Other Thoughts: Do away with the extra tee boxes. Make your tee boxes with wood chips.

Pros: Right on campus and next to a big lake, this course is really clean and picturesque. I think these are Mach 3 baskets and the hole number can be seen most of the time from the tee area.
The water comes into play on a few of the holes and the mando's make otherwise easy holes much tougher. Carbondale is a college town and they have great nightlife downtown which is just 5 minutes away.

Cons: Dirt/mud tee areas. No bathroom. Hard to find you way around when you haven't played there. 9 holes are not enough to drive 60 miles for. Baskets are too low in some cases.
Other Thoughts: Try to play this course with at least two or three other people. The comraderie makes the otherwise boring 9 holes seem fun. They do have alternate tee areas there so find someone around that plays often.

Pros: -Fun
-Quick
-Quick
Cons: -Many tees and baskets way too close to other tees or baskets, one hole having to throw right over another basket.
Other Thoughts: I ask someone who knows the area better to please write NEW directions, starting with a nearby major highway and to the parking lot, with how to find hole #1. I will add the address of the building it is behind.
