JHMR Course Insider Insight - Fall 2023 drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 22, 2023 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Beautiful scenery and terrain within the Tetons
Varied challenge between tight wooded lines and open throws and elevation change (at 6,500' above sea level!)
27 holes with a variety of layouts
Tee signs with distance and elevation change listed
Some truly epic mountain holes, especially on the Legacy and Tournament layouts

Cons:

While tee pads are flat, they are not perfect and have some minor bumps, drop offs, etc. Don't expect to have a 15' runup.
Baskets are Mach IIs with less chains than more modern baskets
The course is a challenging hike (pro for some, con for others)
Early season play will be met with very thick undergrowth and challenge to locate errant throws

Other Thoughts:

***DISCLAIMER***
This review is written by the President of Teton Disc Golf Club. I am intimately involved in the design of the course, the work put into improvements each year, and events run at this course.

History:
The JHMR Disc Golf Course has been around in some capacity for many years. In 2021, the course as we had known it was impacted by significant new construction at the base of JHMR. This resulted in an off year and ultimately was the catalyst for the development of the Teton Disc Golf Club, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that has the mission of expanding the sport of disc golf in the Jackson Hole area. In addition to running events with a large assortment of local organizations (everything from kids clubs to the senior center to adaptive sports organizations), our mission includes us designing and providing volunteer maintenance on the JHMR course, in collaboration with JHMR. In 2022, in an effort to create a new JHMR course that is more resistant to ongoing change/improvements at the JHMR base, we designed the new 18 hole "Sweetwater" layout. This layout purposely incorporated itself with the existing mountain bike trails to ensure that the disc golf course would likely be protected against drastic change in the future. In 2023, the Sweetwater course was redesigned to improve on the 2022 layout and the "Legacy" course was reintroduced to add back some of the original holes which were unaffected by the construction projects. The 2024 layout is expected to be unchanged from the Sweetwater 2023 layout.

Timing:
Most people traveling to the Tetons seem to think that early summer is the best time for disc golf at JHMR and unfortunately that is not the case. The course is generally open from early July through October. In early July the expectation is that the course is wet from the snow melt (JHMR annually receives 400+ inches of snow which continues to cover the ground, even at the "low" elevation of the disc golf course, well through July) and waterproof shoes are recommended. The foliage this time of year is also exploding and while our club goes out regularly to weed whack and lop the ground coverage, we physically cannot tame a mountain that is flourishing with growth after the dormant winter. The course plays very well this time of year, but utilizing a spotter might alleviate some frustration. The grass is also rapidly growing this time of year. Historically, JHMR is able to mow the grass twice throughout the summer so we have to pick and choose when this mowing is most needed and effective. Note that a special mower is required for mountain terrain and this process is quite expensive. The best time to play the course is mid-September through October. At this time of year, the grass is generally mowed and stops growing, the course is generally dry, the mountain bike park is winding down/closed, and the gondolas are shut down.

Terrain:
The disc golf course at JHMR is located on the lower elevation terrain at JHMR. This is essential - while the upper terrain at JHMR is perfect for skiing deep powder, this is not ideal for disc golf. While the idea of providing an upper mountain course which plays down the mountain has been considered, the upper terrain is far too steep and unforgiving for a safe/fun disc golf course to be implemented.

Visitors:
If you are visiting from out of town, feel free to join our club at our various events! We run two league events per week in addition to the Teton Toss non-sanctioned tournament run in late August. In 2024 we plan to also host a sanctioned tournament in late September. Follow our social media or visit our website (tetondiscgolfclub.com) to stay in the loop!

Sweetwater:
The Sweetwater layout is our main 18 hole layout. A par 54 course at a length of 4,773' and a total elevation change of 486', this course intertwines with the mountain bike downhill park and the various lifts operating throughout the summer. While many of the holes cross mountain bike trails, it should be noted that careful consideration of the course design took place to ensure that all mountain bike trail crossings occurred either near the tee pads, such that the thrower can see the biker approaching and wait to throw, or down the hole if the trail originally passes in proximity to the tee pad. Each tee hole sign clearly identifies the mountain bike trails so that the disc golfer can appropriately determine where mountain bike traffic takes place and if it is safe to throw. During normal play, the mountain bike park is a minor inconvenience at most.

As a par 3 course, the Sweetwater layout attempts to challenge disc golfers of all skill levels through various shot shapes, technical lines through the woods, specific gaps, and some long downhill throws.

Hole 1 - 301' +19' Par 3
The course begins with a required gap through a few trees to the open fairway. The basket is located uphill and to the right of the tee which requires either a hard right fade through the gap in the aspens at the end of the tee shot or a stall shot over the aspens which protect the basket area. This is one of the harder holes on the course and a birdie start is a great way to begin your round!

Hole 2 - 247' +40' Par 3
A new addition to the 2023 layout, Hole 2 is a hallmark of JHMR disc golf. This hole offers a narrow fairway to the basket which is visible from the tee and plays much longer than the listed distance. Try to pure a throw through the narrow line straight at the basket, or attempt a throw that begins left and ends right and navigates the multiple trees (and the Yeti's treehouse!) which will test your accuracy along the way.

Hole 3 - 195' +25' Par 3
A temporary reprieve from the challenge of the first 2 holes, Hole 3 is a short uphill shot to a flat green which is protected in front by a large pine and surrounded by aspens. A straight backhand shot is wise but the shot around the backside of the guardian pine is always worth considering!

Hole 4 - 273' +181' Par 3
A demanding tee shot from a treed recess forces you to throw straight and slightly to the right with a significant amount of power if you want any chance of the birdie. The basket is located in a wooded enclosure that is best approached from the right of the tee. There is a narrow backdoor route through the woods for those who go left off of the tee, but maybe it is wiser to layup to the larger opening instead.

Hole 5 - 178' +21' Par 3
While short and seemingly easy, don't take a birdie for granted on this one. The tee shot through the tight tree gaps will test your precision and the sloped green will test your power control and putting abilities. With the road between the tree gap and the basket being OB, this hole can bite if you don't take it seriously.

Hole 6 - 257' +36' Par 3
Starting from an open tee pad location, this hole requires you to hit a tree gap ~200' up the fairway (and significantly uphill) if you want a chance at the birdie. End up short of the gap and you will be completely boxed out from the basket due to the thick woods either requiring heroic scrambling or a layup to the gap. End up long and you will be in the OB road/beyond, essentially guaranteeing a bogey at best. Pure this shot and carry the ~50' into the gap and you will be thrilled to grab this challenging birdie.

Hole 7 - 267' -7' Par 3
Starting from the woods and diagonally crossing a road (OB) intersection, this hole requires precision to avoid catastrophe. Your best bet is likely to go straight at the basket, but beware the creek located immediately in front of the basket which is also OB.

Hole 8 - 208' -6' Par 3
This hole throws across a ski run to a basket located slightly below the fairway in a bed of tight aspens and pines. Hit the gap from the tee and you can likely pick up the birdie. Miss the gap and you will be challenged to scramble for par.

Hole 9 - 363' -46' Par 3
It appears so easy - a big downhill shot to a basket located in an open field. But did you consider the crosswind down or up the mountain that you may or may not feel at the tee pad? Are the trees to the left of the fairway or the tight aspens to the right of the fairway making you reconsider your intended line? Par is good on this one - a birdie is great.

Hole 10 - 472' -69' Par 3
This is why you are playing at this course - a big downhill shot with tremendous mountain views! While appearing wide open through, be sure not to end up in the woods to the right or the left of the fairway. The basket is perched just above a slope so run your putts at your own risk!

Hole 11 - 227' +30' Par 3
A simple hole with a mandatory left of the marked aspen where a creek runs through the trees. With the basket perched close to the drop off to the creek, a miss right is going to hurt. The safe play is to err left, but the chance for birdie from here is low.

Hole 12 - 204' +13' Par 3
The basket is perfectly in frame from the tee in a slight cutout within the lower branches of one of the guardian pines. This beautiful green is protected on the front by trees and a flowing creek. On the backside is yet another creek. The further uphill you go, the larger the distance between the guardian creeks, but you are less likely to get the birdie! Going into the far creek or beyond is OB which requires you to proceed to the drop zone which is a 28' downhill putt where any miss or skip off of the top of the basket is likely going back into the same OB creek/beyond which will force you to try the same shot again.

Hole 13 - 194' +9' Par 3
An immediate double mando off of the tee sets the tone for this touchy shot to a protected basket area. The low ceiling off of the tee and through the mando is also going to make you reconsider your approach to this one. The obvious play to approach the basket is to go right, but overdo it and you will be OB on the road/beyond.

Hole 14 - 293' -49' Par 3
A beautiful tunnel hole that will be sure to test your ability to throw a disc straight. The fairway is ~25' wide for the extent of this hole so ensure that you stay true to your line.

Hole 15 - 181' -5' Par 3
Starting directly beneath the Bridger Gondola, the basket is located 100' deep within the woods in front of you. With a mando left of the marked aspen, the line directly at the basket must be precise to avoid missing this mando. The wide line to the left of the middle trees will test your ability to navigate multiple obstacles.

Hole 16 - 216' -9' Par 3
The very tight wooded fairway rapidly approaches a large guardian tree that must be avoided if you want any chance at the birdie. The predominantly attempted route is to go left of this tree with a right fade back to the basket located in the opening, but it is easier said than done.

Hole 17 - 365' -45' Par 3
Nearing the end of the course but still time to get in some big downhill throws! This hole is mostly in the open ski run but the basket is located within a grove of aspens and pines. If you go right too early, you are going to be in serious trouble. If you play it safe and stay right of the basket, you likely have no chance at birdie.

Hole 18 - 365' -39' Par 3
The final hole and it's another downhill blast! Mostly open but the foliage immediately behind the basket can be a nuisance as well as the trees to the right of the fairway if you go with the large hyzer line.

Legacy:
The Legacy layout is our throwback to the previous 18 hole JHMR course that was impacted by construction. Today, the Legacy layout is a 9 hole par 38 course at a length of 2,869' and a total elevation change of 384'. This layout offers more challenge than the Sweetwater layout.

Hole A - 342' -13' Par 3
The Legacy layout begins with a long shot down the gravel service road with a left finish to the basket area. Go short or left and you may end up in thick woods. Go long and you will be OB into private property.

Hole B - 196' -9' Par 3
This touchy shot forces you to both clear the ground foliage near the tee but also not overshoot the basket which is located on the corner of an OB road/beyond.

Hole C - 256' +30' Par 3
With a mando right of the large tree in the middle of the fairway, this hole requires a shot that is perfectly shaped and has substantial power to get the birdie. The gap between the mando and the woods to the right is located 120' off of the tee and is only about 30' wide. Make it through this gap but end up left and you will be in thick woods.

Hole D - 256' +42' Par 3
One of the most picturesque basket areas on the course, this hole will test your strength off of the tee to see if you can muscle a disc anywhere close enough to get a birdie from. The straight fairway to this hole funnels into the basket area which is located immediately behind a massive pine. Go left and you will either be in the road (not OB) or in the woods which will leave you fighting for your par. Early right is potentially disastrous as you have missed the funnel and will either layup for the straight shot or attempt to scramble. Take a seat on the snowboard bench after this hole and enjoy the scenery.

Hole E - 147' +3' Par 3
This short hole plays through a tunnel that is ~12' wide for the duration of the hole. Hitting a tree early is going to likely spell trouble as is going long of the basket.

Hole F - 346' +73' Par 4
If you can keep the disc in the fairway, you will likely have an easy par and a very good chance at the birdie. But miss left and your disc will likely go down a dropoff into thick woods with horrible footing. Miss right and you will be in equally thick woods and likely have no chance to grab the birdie on this hole that finishes to a right green that is tightly perched above the fairway.

Hole G - 245' +38' Par 3
If you want a birdie, you are going to have to pure this one through the gap in the woods. This gap requires a straight shot as well as one which is traveling uphill to match the slope but also low enough that it travels beneath the tree canopy. The basket is located across the opening beyond the woods which can result in significantly rollaways if your disc doesn't land flat.

Hole H - 767' -124' Par 4
124' of vertical drop. Need I say more? This epic hole starts with a straight shot across the mountain. If you are playing it safe, you can save the vertical drop for your second throw, but if you are going for the eagle, you are going to need to throw a disc that can go straight and then turn 90° right and glide down the ski run as far as possible. Being too ambitious and not clearing the trees on the right before the dogleg will be disastrous. Be careful on the upshot as well since the basket is located on the hill which can result in some mean rolls.

Hole I - 315' -52' Par 3
A straight downhill shot to an elevated basket located in a flat opening. Go too far and you will be in the road OB/beyond. Hold a hyzer too far right and you will likely hit the trees and be left with a 100'+ approach.

Tournament Layout:

The tournament layout is currently being tested but is expected to be the layout for the 2024 late September sanctioned tournament. This layout plays as an 18 hole par 60 at a distance of 6,784'. The highlights of this layout include:

Combined holes 9>10
Combined holes 11>12
An alternate tee pad for Hole 13
Combined holes H>I for a 1,154' Par 5 with over 180' of vertical drop (!!!)

Pros:

+tee signs with distance, elevation change, & next tee
+elevation
+views
+decent baskets (though not all matching)

Cons:

-short somewhat uneven rubber tees (at least there are tees, rare on ski hills)
-hiking steep slopes, including getting to hole 1
-crossing mt. bike trails & gravel maintenance roads

Other Thoughts:

discing on ski slopes is pretty great; fresh air, beautiful views, babbling streams, & generally not busy. though I have only played this twice, the course was almost totally different from the 1st time I played. it now has 27 holes this year. the 9 letter holes were the best of the ones I played the first time & the main 18 were all new, so it seems like they are improving the course every year/season.
they should consider adding a top 9or18 (bomber holes) that you could ride the lift/gondola up ($$) & play down to the top of the current holes; get those really long downhill throws that you want from a ski hill & generate some revenue from the lifts that are already running for the mountain bikers.
the current layout plays/hike straight uphill for the first couple, then slightly uphill back & forth to/from the wooded areas across the open ski runs. finally on 9&10 you get downhill throws. the back 9 is pretty similar with 2 uphill hikes then slightly downhill throws in/out of the trees. 14 is a cool tunnel downhill ~300ft. there are quite a few hikes between holes and I had to refer to the map a few times to be sure I was hiking the correct way. there are a couple places to jump to the letter holes, but again extra hiking to get to them.
I gotta mention how much better this is than grand targhee as the ratings here will mislead you; if you have to choose 1 of the 2, choose this one (though I have only played grand targhee once the same year I first played this one, but it was also better then). I'm giving this rating an extra half point better for this reason, but a solid 4 in it's current configuration (imo).
the j-hole mountain course will give you a workout and you will be rewarded with some great scenery & fun throws. hopefully they continue to improve every year it gets set up.

Fun downhill throws but doesn't live up to potential

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 2, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

The elephant in the room; elevation:

This is of course built on ski resort with the disc golf course using the ski runs as fairways. The elevation adds to what would otherwise be a fairly open, easy course. The uphill holes at the beginning are open and short but difficult to get to because of the steepness and bad tee pads but more on that later. The downhill and cross hill holes are much more fun with many of the holes crossing across having the basket placed in the trees with the tee pad starting out in the open. The downhill holes while fun could have been longer and more challenging but overall they are far enough and downhill enough to get out your drivers and throw big hyzers at but not flex shots; big risk of overdriving the baskets even for noodle arms. I really enjoyed throwing my putter out there on crazy lines and seeing how much airtime I could get - really wish I would have brought my Zephyr!!!!

New holes and modified layout for 2022:

There are now 23 holes at this course with 5 new ones added in just this year. The new holes start after hole 13 where you walk back up the mountain through the BMX track, find a walking path, follow it and find hole "A". I hate to advertise for Udisc on this site but it made finding these extra hole much easier. Hole A throws over a new ditch to a basket protected by trees and bushes then hole "B" throw up hill and in to trees again. Hole "C" is a short one but on a ridge with trees and nasty tree kicks looming on either side, making you throw very accurately and straight. Hole "D" is a really fun downhill throw situated just in front of a massive tree line in an open field but to your left off the tee is guarded by obstacles. Hole "E" from my understanding doesn't have a tee pad yet so you are throwing from the previous basket to the basket for hole "E" which is another longer but more open downhill hole. After this you make your way back over the BMX track and hook back up with the original course on hole 14. I really enjoyed these new holes, much more technical and through out compared many on the rest of the course, hope anymore improvements continue to actually improved the course.

There is also a new hole "1" at the beginning of the course and also the old hole 1 both being labeled hole 1 which is confusing but I think it's to make up for the lack of tee pad for hole "E".

Course infrastructure:

Baskets are mostly temporary but I was told they are slowly replacing them with permanent baskets, as is I didn't see a problem except for a few that were mounted low but no biggie. Tee signs look really nice and do a really good job of showing you the basket, providing distance and shot shape, etc. On almost every basket there was a wooden "next tee" sign attached showing you the general direction of the next tee pad and little wooden skinny signs in the ground that would say "hole 14" and then an arrow reinforcing the signs from the basket. Not too many blind baskets but the few that there were had pink, white, or red ribbons tied to the nearby trees or bushes indicating the location if the tee sign didn't give you enough information. We didn't get lost the entire time and only used a phone app once to find the new holes which don't have signs pointing you in the right direction and aren't obvious from the cutoff.

Aesthetics:

Nothing captures beauty like mountain courses IMO and this course does it too. Stunning views of the Teton mountain range and the valley as well as the other ski resorts that surround Jackson Hole. In early October the mountain peaks across the valley had snow on the top of them and made for really good pictures. Pretty much anywhere around Jackson Hole does. This ski resort here is quite swanky, they have their own little village with coffee shops and cafes, adventure gear and two shops with disc golf equipment even if the selection is quite lacking and the prices are very high, still cool.

Cons:

Tee pads:

They are atrocious! I don't mind rubber pads if they are long enough, flat, and don't have any sticks, rocks or roots in them. These things are maybe six feet long and when you fall off the edge of them you're tripping and falling most likely as there is a drop off on them some 1-3 feet down. I learned to throw standstill off the tee when I played here let's say that. On top of that they aren't even and many are sloping up or down hill depending on where you're throwing to. Some of the worst pads I've come across in my 20 years of playing - enough said!

Difficulty and lack of variety needed to score well:

Although the course has a few holes with trees and tight lines, the majority of the course is wide open and course length is really lacking. I found myself throwing the same understable turnover uphill and the same hyzer shot going downhill. Very few times was this pattern broken up and by the back nine I noticed I had only used 3 discs the entire round. The funny thing I got par or birdie on almost every hole out here. I'm already willing to walk up a damn mountain to play disc golf so why not challenge me a little bit?

The design does not match the potential:

Although I do like the new five holes that were put in this year, I don't like the current design of the other 18. My friend who was playing with me after the round said "It was fun but I feel like it missed something?" I replied " A top of the world hole". I feel like they could have implemented one of these types of holes but went with so many filler holes and short holes instead. Can't help but feel like many of these could be merged or redesigned altogether to make a challenging, more diverse course. I want my downhill holes to be farther than 300 feet so I can really rip a disc hard and see how far it can go!

Other Thoughts:

Huge shoutout to all of the fine people of this resort as we experienced nothing but hospitality. Lady at the hotel desk showed us all the best shops in the village and drew a map for us to find out way as we were not sure where to go to at first - it's a really big place. Talked to a few guys in the shop and they are excited about the club doing more work up here and couldn't be nicer. Talked to a local player and club member for about 10 minutes and got all sorts of information. Although I trashed the layout a bit it was still really fun and worth a trip up here. There are lots of activities to do even in the summer/fall like taking a gondola ride or biking, hiking, ropes course, multiple playgrounds for kids, site seeing, etc. Just know that if you want to stay in the hotel it's like $800 a night after taxes and no I'm not joking. Also the area has a 22% tax rate or something crazy like that. We got fast food after our round cuz we were starving and two combos were $28!!!!!!

Fun, but could be so much better 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 14, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

-A real 18 hole disc golf course in an area that otherwise has absolutely no frolfin' options
-Great views on a beautiful resort
-Decent variety of hole shapes/lengths, mostly due to the extreme elevation changes (it is a ski resort, after all)
-Free to play even though it is on private property
-A few holes were pretty memorable, particularly the last three and a couple of earlier ace runs.

Cons:

-Terrible tee pads. Slick rubber that is super uneven and even crumbling apart on some holes
-17 of the baskets are in OK shape, but one of them is a cloth DISCatcher Portable.
-Signage leaves a lot to be desired. The signs exist, but many where knocked down and they don't provide enough detail to really understand the hole. I found myself walking most holes to get an idea of what shot to execute.
-Multi-purpose area with high risk of hitting a hiker or biker if you don't pay attention. Lots of non-disc golfers use this property.
-Course design leaves a lot to be desired. Maybe this is just personal taste, but I felt like the holes didn't have much of an identity considering the great land they had to work with. This could've been a great course layout, but instead was just OK. I was expecting a lot more "top of the world" type shots or heavily forested holes given the land that the course is on.

Other Thoughts:

-The uphill holes require serious power to reach. The listed distances are short, but the elevation gain is pretty extreme making them play as a Drive/Approach/Tap-in 3 for average players.
-Course par is way off. Not really a negative, just something to know. It's a Par 54 course in my opinion. I shot something like -8 according to the official course par, but really it was an even par kind of round.
****Use uDisc, or you will get lost!!!!!****
-Overall it is a fun course. Lots of flaws, could definitely be improved, but it serves its purpose as the only place to throw in an area otherwise devoid of disc golf options.

Pros:

Plays quickly.
Liked the signage using frisbees stating where the next hole was.

Cons:

Poor signage on several holes. Could not find several tee boxes.

Other Thoughts:

For those that play early DG before the rec shop opens to give directions, the coarse's 1st Tee box is located next to the gondola chair. Go from the gondola being on your left and walk up to the dirt road about 80 yds up the mountain. You'll run into the first tee pad. Through down the road under the gondola.
Real frustrating when no one on the property knew where the 1st Tee box was.

Great scenery, Fun course, not very technical 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 24, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

A very nice course in terms of enjoying the scenery. A good portion of holes allow a player to let loose on the drive. With having a course map (provided at the information booth near the tram), it was easy to figure out where to throw and which hole is next. A few downhill shots really allow for maximum distance drives.

Cons:

One should note that the course lacks creativity and technicality. Although there are a few technical shots, there could have been more with a bit better course planning.

Other Thoughts:

The course does provide a few unique shots, but if you are looking for a challenge this course lacks in that area. However, If you play disc golf just for pure enjoyment, this course does not disappoint.

Pros:

It located in beautiful Jackson Hole which beautiful views of the area. It doesn't offer a lot of variety for holes, but there is something to be said about the enjoyment of bombing a disc down the mountainside

Cons:

The 10 hole course is not well marked out. My brothers and I had difficulty identifying the hole's basket or the next hole tee pads a few times. Except for the first hole, the rest of tee pads are gravel which results in inconsistent footing while throwing.

Other Thoughts:

The Teton Village resort has recently put in a downhill mountain bike course which crosses the disc golf course in a few locations. When we played it wasn't too big of an issue, but you just have to pay attention or else you will get mauled by a biker hauling down the mountain.

Overall a fun course. I don't think it could be called extreme in any sense of the word. It does make good use of the elevation changes for uphill/downhill shots. Would be nice to have some more holes that used some trees to make them a little more interesting and challenging.

Pros:

Lots of elevation change, some fun long downhill shots.

Cons:

Fairly simple mountain course, mostly every shot is straight up hill or straight downhill. Needs better signage at tees and baskets.

Other Thoughts:

Bring your hiking boots. I believe they are turning the course into an 18 hole and changing the layout at the end of august.

Jackson Hole 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 23, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

elevation change
nice weather in summer
nice selection of discs in ski shop (although overpriced)
open shots and wooded shots
practice hole near the ski shop

Cons:

hard to find the next tee on some holes especially 9
no tee signs when I played in June 2012
natural tees are loose dirt
hard to find tee for hole 1 even with the map
map is not accurate at all
Only 10 holes

Other Thoughts:

Played it twice with my brother on vacation. About 2 hours from Yellowstone. Nice ski lodge area. Also saw a lot of mountain bikers on the slopes. Pretty steep at some points. Take some water. Map helps some but not much. It is available in the ski shop. My brother is a beginner and he had a good time and played decent.

This gorgeous course is located on the ski hills of the Teton Village Ski Resort. If you are here, you're probably on vacation and there are plenty of other great activities available nearby. You will definitely want to take advantage of them because you probably won't want to play this course over and over again.

As Danger noted in his (great) review below, it is obvious that this course was designed purely with the last 3 downhill holes in mind. The first 7 play straight uphill (except #5) on open fairways. Uphill distance is the only challenge. Most of the baskets are in the wide open or somewhat close to a tree line. Hole 5 is the most interesting of the first 7: a slight downhill through a pair of trees about 25' from the tee.

When you do finally make it to the top, it makes the hike worth it. Hole 8 is the signature hole: 597' downhill (it looks shorter?) with a 89' drop. It sure is fun to bomb off the top of this hill but the hole itself is an easy straight shot in the wide open. Hole 9 is another downhill bomb in the wide open. Others have noted that this tee is located inside a small tunnel of trees. Either those trees got cut down or the tee was moved when I was there because there was only a tree line off to the left.

Construction in the area had a couple tees or baskets moved. There was a large construction machine directly on top of hole 4's tee and the basket for 10 was moved due to construction also, making the hole more or less unplayable. Hole 9's tee may also have been moved?

The tee pads are uneven dirt and they are too short and some are rocky as well. I threw forehand on most of the first 7 just to avoid awkward footing. Also, this course is a serious uphill hike at high elevation. If you are out of shape you will be sore and out of breath. If you have poor balance you may fall over.

This course has a few redeeming qualities but it leaves much to be desired. I would love to see an experienced course designer redesign this course as a full 18. There is plenty of space available to do so and a number of holes that go across the hill instead of just up or down would make it much easier to play and much more enjoyable. There is plenty of land and interesting topography to work with to make a fun and challenging course design.

Definitely worth bringing your discs if you already plan to be in the area but don't come here just to play. You will be disappointed.

meh... 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 12, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Stunningly beautiful location
-Baskets on each hole
-Well marked, with tee signs
-Free
-Can be played in a short period of time when passing through the area.

Cons:

-Uneven, natural tee pads. Like, MAJORLY uneven. Players with run-up approaches be warned.
-Uninspired layout
-Mostly uphill shots
-Poor use of available terrain
-Plenty of room for 18 holes, but is not.

Other Thoughts:

Teton Village DGC plays on the lower slopes of Jackson Hole Ski Resort. The terrain is mostly grass and dirt with two holes taking advantage of the numerous forested areas at the resort. While beautiful as it gets, a round here leaves something to be desired.

The course generally works its way uphill for the first 7 holes, with mostly 300-500 foot par 4 holes. The fairways are open and straight, and the baskets are unprotected.

Hole number 4 was promising; a moderately sloped downhill shot through a very narrow wooded tunnel. Make it and you can easily birdie the hole. If you don't, you get to go on an exciting walk through the woods.

Hole 7 is the definition of a filler hole. Tee pad in the middle of a field, basket at the top of a hill. This par 4 works its way up a grueling 'moderately difficult' rated ski slope (a blue run). While uphills are fun and all, the only challenge is pure strength.

It is clear to me that this course was designed in order to cater to holes 8 and 9, which are very fun albeit typical for ski resort downhill shots. Hole 8 is really the signature, but once again it is just a big-air downhill shot down a ski slope, to a basket randomly placed in the middle of the slope. 597 feet, 89 down, and par 4. Quite easy par provided the winds don't carry your disc into the woods.

Hole 9 appears to have been redesigned since the pictures on this site were taken. The tee pad is now in a wooded area with a wonderful tunnel that lasts about 50 feet. Beyond that, its a wide open, field downhill shot.

Basket 9 leaves you a good distance from the bottom of the hill, where there is a practice DISCatcher basket waiting. A small hill near basket 9 appears to be a popular 'tee' for a bonus 10th hole, which was actually a ton of fun. Chairlift wires are the main obstruction for this hole.

A second loop with more technical shots would be a fantastic addition to this course, and would really compliment the relatively simple existing 9. While I subscribe to the thought of 'any course is better than no course,' this resort town would really benefit from finishing the course. While I found it nice to be able to play while in Jackson, I just did not find the course that 'fun.'

Strap on your boots 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 8, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The view and area is awesome. Navigation is easy. The course takes a natural path up the mountain and then back down the ski slopes. There is elevation changes on every hole and some challenging tree shots (see the picture for #4) you can shoot the gap or go wide right. Challenging and fun course to play.

You get to throw your disc over 500 feet downhill and that is my favorite part of playing ski resorts.

Cons:

Tee pads are very rough. If you have a lot of steps in your approach, or use your legs a lot, you'll have to back it off. I throw a lot of side-arm on this course to avoid breaking my ankle.

Other Thoughts:

There is a series of tournaments played each summer sponsored by the snowboarding/mountain biking shop near the first tee box. There is a raffle for prizes and free beer for all participants. The shop has discs, maps, and score cards.

After hole nine there is a bonus hole throwing downhill to the practice basket at the bottom of the course near the first tee pad. In case you need a tie-breaker.

Pros:

Challenging course in an amazing mountain setting. 7 holes up the mountain 2 down.

Cons:

Very few for what it is, this is a 9 holer not an 18, so pretty quick. Easy to lose disc on a couple of the last holes but thats cause you're throwing it 700 feet down a mountain.

Other Thoughts:

Haven't played it in a few years but this course is one of my all time favorites, played it numerous times when I lived in JH.

Pros:

Challenging course on the slope of a ski resort. Great atmosphere and mountian air. Some extreme elevation change going up and down. thought out basket placement.

Cons:

Lots of hikers and bikers, some bugs and even though I was playing in mid-summer, it was still slightly muddy toward the base of the mountian. Some tall grass so losing a disc is possible.

Other Thoughts:

I enjoyed playing this course. It was a work out. definitly worth playing if your in the area.
