Good mix of land and land usage

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 2, 2024 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Some of the best elevation in the area and used well through the course
- Lots of differing terrain from the grassy park style area to the more rugged rocks, sticks, and roots section
- Good variety of open to lightly and moderately wooded holes
- Lots of variety in terms of distance as well as short/long par 3 and a few par 4 holes as well
-Elevated baskets through out, I really enjoyed the ones in the back 9 and especially the final basket with the Dallas star, presented by Dynamic Discs of course! (Would be a really difficult, perhaps unfair island hole)

Cons:

- Lots of blind basket locations makes for walking the fairway twice
- Navigation isn't super intuitive without some sort of mobile DG app.
- Course flow feels off, we started on one of the back 9 holes because it was closer to where we parked
- Many of the brushy holes in the middle felt like the same shot, just throwing up and over everything hoping you land near the basket, usually in a hyzer (RHBH) fashion
- Not sure I would say there is a lot of filler holes but many felt unimaginative

Other Thoughts:

Just another well done, good course in the Dallas area. As an out of towner who really only has a few courses to play and none of them as good as any of the courses in the area I truly am jealous. I don't think this is the best course in the area nor the worst but gives you a different feel and more elevation than most courses around it. Solid course despite its age, I'd say it's holding up well.

Veteran's Park

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 7, 2023 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-- Land is well used. Five holes have significant drops in elevation for the area, and four have significant rises. A few other have smaller elevation changes and some play on the sides of hills, so only a few holes are truly flat. Trees are generally well used. While there is no water carry, a small creek comes into play on a couple of holes.
-- Restroom on site.
-- Practice basket.
-- Tees. Original/primary are concrete. Alternate tees are mostly natural, although a few are turf. Many of the concrete tee pads are close to square; 80 square feet of concrete is more functional as about 6x13 than 8x10.
-- Tee signs are good with hole number, par, distance and map.

Cons:

-- No map on site.
-- Navigation isn't great. After you finish hole 1, you are 30 feet from one of the pin positions for No. 2. You get to walk the length of the No. 2 fairway (334 feet) to reach that tee pad. Be aware as you come out of the trees; you could get hit by a drive. Six and seven play parallel but not back and forth, so that's more backtracking. After you finish 9, you see a path straight ahead, and a more treacherous one right, down and over the small creek. Neither of those is your path to 10. The path is behind you about halfway up the 9 fairway. Since you probably can't been seen from the 9 tee at the basket, you could get hit by a throw. After 10, you've got a long walk to 11; follow the walking path left and you'll get there.
-- Holes 11-14 are mostly flat, open and boring.
-- No. 5 is one of the most visually appealing yet frustrating holes. It tees from the top of a hill, over the tops of dozens (perhaps hundreds) of trees to a basket 349 feet seriously downhill. The view is nice, but you can't see the basket, and the trees keep you from seeing where your disc came down; I've never played the hole without spending significant time searching for my disc. This is part of a four hole stretch (4-7) where the basket is blind from the tee, so expect to spend time searching for your discs on every hole. This stretch of holes is one of the biggest reasons I don't play this course very often.

Other Thoughts:

-- Alternate basket positions (all holes have at least two pin positions and some have three) give you options but can also be frustrating since the basket is often blind from the tee.
-- The course is 25 years old. The pictures on this site show the old, gray DGA baskets. Those were replaced by Dynamic Disc Veteran baskets at some point, and the Veteran baskets have now been replaced by DISCatchers.
-- TWO places nearby to buy discs. DFW Disc Golf Center is about a half a mile away, east on Arkansas Lane. It's got a full selection of equipment. A convenience store across Arkansas Lane from Hole 12 has some discs.

A Few Good Holes

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 16, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

A mix of boring park-style holes, nice designs, and a wide gully.

-Amenities: Concrete tees, signs with info and good maps but no pin position indicators, DD Veteran baskets, practice basket.

-Multi-Tees: Short tees natural and marked by a beam. There are also some champion tees that look seriously challenging, which IIRC were half-buried turf marked with beams.

-Multi-Pins: Lots of different pin positions, which can vary the shots significantly. I wish there were indicators on the signs to help with this, but the feature is nice.

-Environments: This course has several different environments. The first is wide open plains holes. The second is pretty normal park-style holes with stands of woods, sparse trees, and open space. The third is a kind of gully or shallow canyon from (4)-(7) I believe. These are matched by different styles of play, below.

-Shot Shaping/Gameplay: I would say the course has predominantly ho-hum holes, but there are definitely some winners out here and a couple fun shots in the canyon. The course starts off with a bang on (1), a long grassy downhill leading to a low ceiling approach. A couple of decent holes with guarded greens take you to the canyon section, where the elevation and scrubby trees present an entirely different challenge. By the time you're to the back half, most of the remaining holes are predominantly open, straight, park-style holes. (16)-(17) are nice downhill, protected green shots that end the round on a higher note. Mixed in are some decent downhills where you can enjoy watching the disc fall to earth, and a number of trickier uphills to match. Wind is a factor on the open holes.

Cons:

Not the pithiest design, plus some other things.

-Creativity: Other than the holes noted above, this course didn't give any surprises. The canyon holes by nature feel rather arbitrary (in a sea of bushes, what makes any bush a better guardian than another?). The open holes are just that, and very few greens present more than random tree obstacles. I was very surprised after playing that this course is considered one of the finer in DFW, as it just doesn't present the variety of shots I associate with great courses.

-Canyon Scrub: You can throw over the top. It's always an option, and not infrequently a good option. It takes the tact out of the sport.

-Guardians: A decent number of times, I thought the guardian trees were more luck than skill based.

-Footing: The canyon presents some awkward footing and loose soil.

-Blind Shots: A good number of holes play blind, a frustrating situation for this first-timer.

-Missing Amenities: As noted, pin position indicators would be really nice. Additionally, taped spokes or basic next tee signs would help with a couple of slightly confusing transitions.

Other Thoughts:

Veterans has a handful of cool holes thrown in to what is otherwise a bland course. Those holes make it worth playing and really feel like thrills, but as a whole this shouldn't be a destination. It rates solidly in my Good and no higher.

~Similar Courses: The canyon holes feel like a similar stretch on Flying Armadillo - Big (San Marcos, TX); the open holes remind me a bit of McCurry Park (Fayetteville, GA), open sections of Boundary Waters (Douglasville, GA), or Central Valley (Murfreesboro, TN).

Starting to Think Half the Parks I Visit are 'Veterans Park' 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Dec 3, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

- good quality Dynamic Discs Veteran baskets (what else!?)
- practice basket (near pavilion, basket by parking lot is 18)
- well mown and maintained
- some good elevation change starting with hole 5
- while a multiuse park, safety hazards are minimal
- great variety of nature and terrain showcasing northern Texas ecology
- some helpful next tee signs
- some steep sections of terrain add interest
- good size concrete tees
- good natural obstacles force a variety of shots
- while some blind shots, losing discs isn't a major problem here due to limited undergrowth

Cons:

- a little limited on amenities - minimal benches and garbage cans
- multiuse park shares space with playground, pavilion, etc.
- navigation is a bit confusing; consulting Google map is necessary, and more next tee signs would really help
- some graffiti on tee signs
- traversing course could be a bit challenging if you aren't pretty able-bodied
- walk from 1 to 2 is excessively long
- no hole numbers on baskets doesn't help navigation
- only notable safety hazard was throwing near walking path on hole 8

Other Thoughts:

Veteran's Park was my first exposure to Texas disc golf, and it did not disappoint. While I would have liked to see the rocks and rattlesnakes of west Texas, this course was a cool mix of the grass and forests with rockiness and scrub brush that northern Texas has to offer.

This course is fairly challenging and will test your technical game in places. I particularly enjoyed hole 5 which is a cool downhill shot through brush obstacles. There is some risk on the course of losing discs although I found this generally minimal. While navigation could definitely be improved, I managed alright on my own with the Google map. There are some next tee signs but more are really needed, and numbers on the baskets would also help.

The course starts out more technical and opens up a bit near the end. Holes 12-14 didn't seem to add much, being out in an open field for the most part. Otherwise, most of the holes had unique characteristics I really enjoyed.

The tee pads and baskets are in great shape and the course is generally well maintained, although some of the tee signs are showing their wear and/or some graffiti, sadly. While it is a multi-use park, the disc golf area is fairly isolated from other activities. If you're in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area, I think this course is worth a stop. It might not be a true destination but it's a fun and challenging round and beats many of the area courses in terms of interesting use of the terrain.

While there are 3 tees here, only the main concrete tees are really clear. The others have no separate tee signs and while the blue log markers are fairly easy to find on most holes, the 3rd tees are not and it could get confusing playing something other than the concrete tees. This, to me, makes the addition of other tees far less valuable.

All in all, this is a really fun course I encourage anyone to check out. It makes really good use of the area's limited elevation change, and will punish you if you don't choose your shot wisely in the same way it will reward solid, consistent play. There are a number of disc golf shops nearby as well.

Awesome Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 1, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

Great mix of long and short throws, left and right hooks, uphill and down hill.

Many challenging tight throws; make the game fun.

Great changes of scenery and terrain. It's really a beautiful course.

Cons:

Playing for the first time, it was a little difficult finding some of the next teepads and baskets. Signs from basket to next teepad could be helpful. This was only an issue in the back hill section when you're throwing over brush, cactus, and trees.

Other Thoughts:

This course is in my favorites list. I loved the changes in terrain and scenery. It was very challenging at certain spots, and then opens up for some long throws.

If I'm back in Dallas, I'll definitely play here agian!

One of the Best in DFW 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 20, 2018 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

A wide variety of types of holes that will challenge all players
Multiple basket locations for every hole
Excellent quality Veteran baskets
Well maintained by park staff and local club
Established local club and weekly tournaments and minis
Lots of elevation changes
Host of the VPO, so tournament and drone footage on YT is readily available to preview the course

Cons:

No use of creeks or pond in the park except for the additional temp holes put in around the VPO
Bathrooms almost always locked
Very difficult to walk on holes 4-7 after a rain
Hard to navigate the front 9 for first time players, use a local or maps/media on DGCoursereview before you play here.
Too busy for rec play on Sundays with the weekly tournaments unless you join, play very early or late.
Lack of any trees/obstacles on open field holes 12 and 13

Other Thoughts:

This is my favorite course in the DFW Area and I have played almost every course within 40 miles of it. I am biased as I played here since the 80s when it was a small 9 hole course, but it has evolved since then into a course worthy of attracting the biggest pros in the game for the annual VPO. It can be very difficult and frustrating for beginners to play here as there are several blind basket locations from the tee and the long fairways and hilly terrain can take a toll on you, especially on a hot Texas summer day. Minis are now well marked in blue for those who think some of the pro par 3s are a bit long for them or want to just change it up. Local knowledge is a huge plus for doing well here and Veteran's is one of the more difficult courses around. There are 3 tee locations for every hole, the standard longs marked with color signs and concrete pads, minis marked with blue painted logs, and unmarked or well hidden championship tees that only sometimes have a concrete pad. These tees only get signs in the fall around the VPO. You will need a local or watch a tournament video to find them otherwise. The baskets move between their 2 locations often and many will be blind from the tee, but you can usually spot the next basket on the walk up from the last hole before you get to the tee pad.

Bought a car and played disc golf 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 23, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Loved the Veteran baskets
-Front 9 has a few very challenging holes.
-Back 9 is a welcome relief after "hiking" the front 9.
-Tee boxes were awesome.
-Signage was adequate.
-Maps that are a available are good.

Cons:

-Front 9 is in tough terrain.
-Difficult to navigate between some of the holes on the front 9 if you are not familiar.
-No indication of which pin location is in play on each hole.
-Many of the front 9 pins could not be seen from the tee box which led to a lot of extra walking to figure out where we were throwing.
-Lots of opportunities on front 9 to lose discs on the blind shots to pin locations.
-The back 9 was almost too easy compared to front.

Other Thoughts:

This was a very challenging course from hole 4-10 in my opinion. The front 9 definitely should not be played alone your first time out. I would advise getting with a local so you know where to throw on blind holes. I would also suggest using a spotter at the goal for each drive to make sure you can see where discs land. It is hard enough to figure out where the goals are, and even harder to find discs that skip or roll away from where you drive. Also navigation from hole 4 to 10 is not always obvious. There was 2-3 times where we had to refer to the map, and we still got turned around going from 7 to 8 even with map in hand.

One good thing I thought about as we played was you really could play the front 9 twice if you wanted a bit of a challenge, or you could play the back 9 twice if you wanted a more leisurely round. With so many disc golf courses available in the area, I am not sure why you would want 1 course for both options, but you definitely have it here.

I think hole 5 was the one that I both loved and hated the most. This time of year, you stand on the elevated tee box and stare out at a sea of green bushes and see no hint of where the goal is. So, I hated having to throw blind with only the sound of the someone standing at the basket as a guide for the throw. But, I loved watching my disc fly over the greenery, and in turn watching my friends' drives flying in as I spotted for them. It was a unique hole.

If you get a chance, I would recommend playing this one WITH A LOCAL. If you are bent on going without one, at least take friends that can help spot discs on drives so you don't spend your whole day searching bushes. I would not recommend playing this course alone on your first trip.

All in all, I thought it was a good course. Not in my favorites, but it definitely stands out in my memories of courses played.

A great course with good elevation changes 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 19, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

Tee pads are more than ample allowing for a proper run up.
Signage is good providing the player with all they need to know.
Has a good deal of elevation in the heart of the front 9. Holes 4-10 have a good mix of up and down action going on.
All shots are accounted for here from left to right dog legs, to open holes, to wooded holes. The lengths vary depending on where the pin is located so there are some a couple of short holes, moderate length holes and a few longer holes too.
Hole 1, 3, and 12 will keep the big guns happy as they are mostly open. 1 and 3's baskets are protect but a majority of the hole is open. There are excellent lines on a lot of holes here and it will make you use your brain to shape shots.
Course is in a beautiful park and there are other amenities here as well.
A couple baskets sit on a hillside so there is the risk of a roll away putt and the added pucker factor adding to the challenge of the hole.

Cons:

Some of the interior holes on the front 9 might be tough to walk down/up after a good rain. Please be sure of your footing.
A couple of walks in between holes are a bit long. 1's basket to 2's tee and 10's basket to 11's tee come to mind. Not too bad but it slows the flow of the round down a tad.
For those players that like to use a cart some of the holes will be hard to drag/push a cart on. The rocky terrain makes for more work. Its not impossible just need to know what you are up against.

Other Thoughts:

Of course on Veteran's Park they are going to have DD Veteran baskets. They do their job well and look good to boot.
This course has a nice variety of shots. The wooded approaches on holes 1-3, the openness of 1 and 3 fairway, the shorter holes on the back half of the course make for some great golf here.
Its a nice change of pace that you don't see too often in a city park course. I throughly enjoyed my round here and was challenged both physically and mental. I like a course that mixes things up and makes you use a full bag of shots in order to score well.
I will definitely play this course again when I return to the DFW area. I think there is a bit of something here for every player.
Veteran's Park get a lot of play and has a good word of mouth buzzz and after you play it you will know why.

Worst signs on any course I've been to for finding the next hole
Built on a hill and horrible on a windy day
Baskets do not have the hole number, I shot on the wrong basket once

Other Thoughts:

Based on the ratings, I went for the first time and was disappointed. There is some nice elevation change, but tee boxes suck. The layout and signs are not good. It's a solid DGC and I'll go back but only in cooler non windy weather. I would hate to be out there in the heat

It's a bit of a drive for me, I prefer Lake Park, Town Lake, Clark, zBoaz, Bill Allen and Cameron Park quit a bit more. However it's not bottom of the barrel either.

Veteran's 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 28, 2016 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

The two halves of the course really have a very different feel. After the initial few holes, it goes into some holes that are very treed up (mostly smaller cedars) with a lot of elevation change. The other holes look largely like holes you typically see at multi-use parks. The park-like holes and more wilderness type holes have very different feels to them, and make for a real variety in the holes. There are some shorter holes, but plenty of longer ones as well. There are multiple pins on all of the holes (3 locations on some of them), and they seem to be moved by the club pretty regularly.

Cons:

Very difficult to navigate, especially the first half. Even with people who have played it a fair bit (but not regularly since we're an hour out of Arlington) we still go to the wrong spot for the next tee occasionally. This is really the biggest con, you really want to find someone to play this with the first time.
It also gets a bit rough in some places, the first half is very unfriendly if you go off of the fairways. Although any course in Texas will be really hot in the summer, this one is particularly brutal.

While my high score does not reflect it, this was by far my favorite disc golf experience thus far. I could see where this would be REALLY tough in the heat of Texas summer, and hard for someone who hasn't played there to navigate. Luckily I was with friends who had. It gets crowded so come early, even at 7:30 AM on a Sunday, we were one of 4-5 groups teeing off.

Cons:

Some holes are lengthy and are considered a Par 3's. You need a GPS to locate some of the tee boxes between holes, because you won't be able to see the next tee box from the basket of the previous hole. A diverse set of challenges 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 15, 2014 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Concrete tees, exceptional diversity. You will not get bored with the layout. You will never feel like you are throwing the same hole twice. It really has just about everything. Multiple pin positions, wooded, elevation, distance, beauty, and nice corner store that sells plastic, and cold beverages near by.

On a 15+ mph day the open long holes can really eat your lunch. This course will be tough to finish Par or under your first few times out. Especially if you don't have a somewhat accurate 350ft + drive.

Good signage on all the holes. Seating at almost all the tee boxes. Good long course with diverse terrain will give you some exercise as well as a scenic DG experience.

Cons:

For beginners this course can definitely be a beating. You might think there is no way to get to the basket in 3 throws. And you might be right, but in time, with the right disc for your style and some tweaks in your "power grip" you may be surprised to find Par 3 is right, it's just a little harder to achieve than the Par 3's at your local 9 hole. :)

Really the only con I can think of, is that it is a challenge and a lot of walking including up and down some rocky slopes. And I claimed those things above as pros, as well. Will depend on your specific preference. I love it, personally.

Other Thoughts:

Seriously, this is a very pretty course with great use of the terrain and land available. I fell in love with this course first time I played it. It's not easy. You aren't going to come out here and get an ace your first time, but if you aren't afraid of a challenge and you want a course that will force you to work on a variety of different throws, through a variety of different setting, you will not be disappointed. I really think this is a destination course. Worth a road trip to play it, if you consider yourself to be a disc golfer. :) have fun, take it in.

Putt-Putt but no Clown 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 24, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

There are a few good things to say about this course: 1) Concrete Tee Boxes, 2) 18 holes, 3) Varying terrain.

Cons:

Whoever planned this course was either a non-player or simply masochistic. Hiding the baskets in a group of trees to make the course "challenging" is like putting a golf ball up a ramp while avoiding the windmill. To make matters worse most of the first 8 baskets cannot be seen from the tee boxes and a newcomer has to make a guess based on the signage. Luck has a lot to do with most of the holes. If you are lucky you will miss the trees between you and the basket and all of the ones around the basket (which you can't see anyway). The signs show the "general" direction of the next tee box but the emphasis should be on "general". It is necessary to do some searching for the next tee box. Most of the course needs updating with newer baskets, cleared out brush to allow lanes to the baskets, and better signage. Also, there is no way to know which position the baskets are in which means it is necessary to go and look for the basket BEFORE throwing from many of the tee boxes.

Myriad of shots! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 26, 2014 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-Lots of variability in presentation, orientation, length, elevation.

-Great tee pads.

-Good signage (although enough with the "Melk"ing already)

-They do a great job of moving the baskets here; 5 have been moved in the last month!

-Close to that Quickie Mart that sells tons of discs (be sure to haggle over price because he is ~$4 over on all discs!)

-No water (but you can still lose discs in the dense forests!)

-Get a chance to use those under stable discs I can't use on my home course.

Cons:

-On a windy day it can be tough.

-Not sure I agree with all Par 3s.

-Some of holes are blind (4, 5, 8, 9)

Other Thoughts:

This place (although a bit isolated from other courses) is worth a shot if you come to DFW to play DG. You will get some exercise because there is more elevation than most DFW courses!

pros and cons 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 11, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

challenging, varied terrain

Cons:

Some of the baskets are not numbered, which is confusing since the holes sometimes criss-cross. Some moron(s) wrote "melk" (among other things) on most, if not all, of the signage, obscuring maps.

Other Thoughts:

This would probably be a fun course if accompanying a local. Without a guide, it is an exercise in frustration.
