Rough start, great finish, and #3!!! Wow!! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 14, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Beginner/Casual/The Occasional "loan them discs" friendly course.
-Plays around the perimeter of a well maintained and beautiful park!
-Concrete Tee's, Signs (except 6, more later) Baskets in good shape.
-Varied Terrain, The "across the valley" shot on #3 was exquisite!
- Had a good balance of fun and challenging lines. But it still edged out as a fun course. (once I knew where I was going)
-The final third of the course, weaves through a wooded area and over a creek. You'll have to get creative with your lines, but very doable.
-Fun, Convenient, and can still get a work out.
-Worth a mention: A couple of guys ran up on me. They would run to the tee, fire off a shot, sprint to their disc, throw etc.. run and gun type play. If they missed a putt, they would do X amount of Burpees. They were heading into their third lap as I was leaving the park. I should really look into this kind of workout! Super cool guys! They filled me in on the situation with #2! I let them through on #7, and they were back to #7 by the time I was finishing on #9 (On your left, anyone?? lol)

Cons:

-As of this review, Construction has crossed the #1 Fairway, and runs parallel to #2. High unclimbable Fence.
-#6's sign is missing. (I mistook it for #2 tee and the #3 tee)Just conveniently frustrating.
-Odd sized Tees, a little short. (more disorienting, than hindering though) Not a real big deal, but it is on three. No run up, and slopes off at the end.
-The #1 Basket is close to a new playground that was constructed in front of the #2 Teepad (which is no longer in use. The Alt Tee is 30ft on the other side of play area). I realize the basket was there first, but I must acknowledge.
-Though the flow is logical, however First time navigation can get wonky. Honestly, I walked past the #2 teepad, and didn't know that the tee area was moved. Three is easy to miss. Finally, 4 and 5, throw parallel to each other. you throw 4, then walk back to 5. Odd. but easy to remember for 2nd round.
-Pedestrian traffic and a kids play area

Other Thoughts:

I'll start with this: I dinged this course a half point for the playground, not the construction. However... the #3 fairway, bought that point back! Some issues here are temporary, due to construction taking place in the park. I also wonder, with the construction of the play area right in front of #2's Teepad, if there won't be a redesign in the future. More than likely, post construction.

Okay, so my experience started off being met by said construction zone. I wasn't sure if the basket I seen near hole one was a practice basket, or a temp basket in use for hole one. So, I played around the construction to the original #1. There were kids in the play area, so I approached with caution, completely passing, and not seeing, the #2 tee. Thus began, my search for #2's tee. I found A tee with no sign. (This was the #6 tee) I threw twice, each time to a wrong basket. I finally figured out where 2 was, then opted to skip #2. (After learning later, I went back and played it) Three was a raised mound on top of a hill. Glorious shot! The next three lines throw back across this valley, but not as high up. #6 is probably the second highest throw with a sweet downhill shot as well! 7,8,and 9, weave across a creek and through a mild wooded area. Very scenic, Very Cool!

I was impressed, once I figured out where I was going! #3's long downhill run really helped quell some seething frustration that was seriously building up! (Hint: #3's tee backs up to the construction fence) It was only then that I understood the draw to Rotary Park! 1 and 2 will probably need some relocation after the construction is completed, but the rest of the course really is worth the trip. Thing is... Kirksville is off the beaten path for any one in Iowa. With Disc Golf popping up more and more in Northern Missouri, I'm surprised that there aren't more courses in Kirksville!! Hopefully that will change in the future! If I lived in Kirksville, I would definitely enjoy playing here!! Is it worth the drive? Only if you make it part of bigger trip. Say you're already going Kirksville or heading to St Joe, Columbia, or other points south, then you should definitely make it a stop along the way. It will be a pleasant addition and it plays relatively quick!! (Just remember what I said about holes 1, 2 and getting to 3)

Quick, Fun 9-Hole Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 5, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

Very minimally wooded, open course. Long, open fairways with excellent use of elevation changes, which adds interest and challenge. Very limited water hazards. I dont have crushing long drives, but still made it up to the basket in a reasonable number of throws to par or bogey most holes.

Cons:

Navigating the course blindly the first time was challenging, I ended up throwing to all the wrong baskets. But, one time around with some regulars and I appreciate the course much more in its appropriate configuration.

Other Thoughts:

The local club members are very kind and welcoming. Enjoyed playing a nice round with them, hope to join them again soon!

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 19, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

Big park, lots of big old trees, for the most part well placed pins, recent upgrades make navigation easier. Hole 3 I found very fun to shoot. 9 baskets allows for quick play.

Cons:

Some signs were either missing or damaged. navigation was actually a bit odd at some parts.

Other Thoughts:

Updating the tee signs could do this course good. The park itself is very nice. Aquatic park, volleyball, playground, disc golf, should be something for everyone.

Kirksville has a DG course?! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 23, 2013 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Poured concrete tee boxes along with very decent pin locations make this a good challenge for beginner/intermediate players. Good use of elevation, trees, and a fairly deep creek. Well maintained and easy to find.

Cons:

The flow of the course can be a bit confusing, but it doesn't take long to figure out. You have to cross the creek SEVERAL times back and forth throughout the course, including 2 times that require a bridge (but there is no bridge, so good luck!). We ended up using a makeshift pin for hole 8 and creating our own tee box for hole 9 to avoid crossing the creek at its deepest. The park in general drains poorly, so if it has been raining consistantly, you may want to wait a few days before heading out there.

Other Thoughts:

I will definitely play this course whenever I am in town. It still presents a decent challenge and once they put that bridge it the course will be a little easier to navigate.

Rotary park 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 24, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

They have added a bridge between holes 3/4/5! Its one bridge, but really helps. Trees and hole locations require variety of shots, and The course plays quickly. 9 holes in 45 minutes or less easily. Good beginner course due to consistent length hole to hole. Nice for more experienced players due to shaped shots and 2 great ace opportunity holes (6,8).

Cons:

Poor hole and tee box layout. You have to go back and forth across the creek 8 times. Literally 8 times. A bridge was added around hole 3/4/5 which is great, but still no bridge at the bigger problem area of hole 8/9.

Other Thoughts:

They are putting in a bridge this year for holes 8 and 9 which will be great if it happens. In the mean time, there are trees to the left of holes 8 & 9 that are in line with the basket and tee of each hole respectively. We play objective style to avoid the creek, which is much deeper around those holes.

Fun 9 Holer 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 28, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Good distance (most holes are around 300 ft), Some trees that force you to work on different shots, elevation changes on holes 3-5, course is regularly mowed, and good obstacles such as creek and OB

Cons:

Bad signage, the signs are on the teepad and get in the way on a couple holes, which is a pain and kind of a waste! It's not easy to get from hole to hole for first time players, Without a bridge to Holes 8 and 9, the creek makes playing the holes too much trouble than it's worth sometimes. Design of course is subpar and doesn't flow like one would expect either. Could be easily improved with a few different pin placement or teepads even.

Other Thoughts:

It's a fun course to play and get through in a short period of time, wish there was another one around here to go with the course, or wish there were more holes. There is a practice basket near 1, which is a positive.

A long 9 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 4, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course offers several chances to really rip a disc without getting into much trouble. The first 3 holes are each really good birdie opportunities (if you play them as par 4's). Ace opportunities on 4, 5, 6, 8, and 9.

The scattered trees offer a bit of an obstacle on most holes, but you still have several different line options available to play.

Cons:

The tee location for hole 5 is terrible. It's the longest walk between holes on the course and you have to backtrack across the drainage ditch that runs through the park. Flight paths for holes 3-5 intersect quite a bit, so if the course is crowded, you need to watch out.

Between the creek, the ditch, and a few adjacent low-lying areas, this park can sometimes hold a lot of water. During the summer or in dry stretches, it's not much of an issue. Currently, the only decent crossing is on hole 7, but there is talk of adding another bridge on 8, and possibly one for holes 4 and 5.

I almost forgot to list the biggest con for this course: it's in Kirksville.

Other Thoughts:

* There is currently not a bridge to cross the creek on holes 8 and 9 (although there is a plan in the works to build one). There is a crossing behind the tee pad on 8 and another one up closer to the hole. Hole 9 has a shortcut crossing about 50 ft in front of the tee pad. There is also a path through the woods up to the road near the basket.
* The tee pads are a little too short for much of a run-up. The ground behind most of them is flat enough and level with the concrete to extend a run-up by a few steps. The exceptions to this are 2, 3, and 9.
* There is a gravel parking lot next to the sand volleyball court that is very close to the practice basket and tee #1. However, if you want to avoid a long walk back from hole 9, turn into the park off of New Street and park around the amphitheater.
* Bathrooms are located in the center of the park just off of the hole 2 fairway and behind the hole 6 tee. There is a water spigot next to the shelter by the hole 7 basket.
* During the winter, basket #4 is removed for sledding, which usually takes place from the hole 3 tee pad.

I've had great times here 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 4, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Easier, good variety, not too many trees to screw your throws up. Probably takes less than 40 minutes to play, even with several people. There are benches at most of the holes. Simple layout takes you in a loop. Openness and size of the park allows many configurations - it can easily be turned into an 18-hole course by simply choosing a different hole from each pad.

Cons:

Water hazards a problem on the last holes. You have to frequently cross a creek to keep playing. The pads are too small to get a good run-up. First hole has a playground in its path where children play, so beware of that. Some of the par numbers seem a bit strange, it's easy to birdie the 1st and 2nd holes; the 7th hole is a bit rough for a par 3.

5th hole recently had the pin stolen. You can play through to the 2nd hole's pin, it's about 90 feet further up the hill.

Other Thoughts:

This is a great 9-hole course with a good variety of elevation changes and interesting shot possibilities. It's really quite good and worth playing if you're in Kirksville.

Pleasant Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 9, 2008 Played the course:once

Pros:

Being new to the sport, I'm not always sure what I'm looking for, but I liked the changes in elevation and having to dodge not one but two creeks, as well as a water pipeline. Despite the pipeline, the park is pleasant to look at. The mature trees didn't seem inclined to eat my discs, either. The Tee instructions were quite well-done.

Cons:

Having to back up almost to the 4 tee to find the 5 was a bit weird, and I got wet crossing the smaller (but splashier) of the two streams. I had to fish my disc out of the larger stream -- but, bonus, found someone else's lost disc.

Other Thoughts:

A comfortable short course of 3 and 4 par holes. Even with the fishing, we finished nine holes in about forty-five minutes.

Good distance for a 9 hole 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 23, 2008 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This is a fun course with good distance. The elevation changes on the middle holes is my favorite part of the course. The park is usually mowed well. There aren't very many areas to lose a disc here. The course is very simple to follow with great tee signs. The old mature trees are great part of the course to make you think about your shots, the fairways are still nice and open just make sure you set up for your approach.

Cons:

Hole 1's basket is close to a busy playground and often kids are playing right next to it. Holes 8 and 9 require you to risk getting wet and muddy crossing a big drainage ditch or make a LONG walk back to a bridge in the middle of the park. It is nice to see concrete tees on a 9 hole course, but they are a little short and they are not level with the ground so a run up on your x step is tricky.

Other Thoughts:

This is a fun course mostly used by the local college kids. It is a quick play I do a solo 9 in about 30-40 mins.
