North Park

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 22, 2023 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-- Multiple tee pads and multiple pin positions on most holes. Thirteen holes have two tee pads, and the long tee on 12 serves as a good long pad for 8; sixteen holes have two pin locations.
-- Concrete tee pads. They vary in size (and in one instance shape), but they are mostly big enough.
-- Practice basket and large covered pavilion near hole 1. Also, an actual restroom is there.
-- Plenty of parking.
-- Seating. It's not at every hole, but you aren't likely to go more than a few holes without some place to sit.
-- DISCatcher baskets in good shape.
-- Best/favorite holes: 2 (less than 300 feet from either tee, downhill to an elevated basket); 6 (310/350 seriously downhill with an open fairway to a basket with several guardian trees); 11 (see other thoughts); 13 (island/OB middle of the fairway to an elevated basket); 17 (220 feet through a double mando with the creek/ditch just left/behind the basket).
-- Navigation is good. The change a few years ago that flopped the two nines (old 10-18 is now 1-9, etc.) helped with that. Previously, after 9, you had to walk through the 12 tee pad to reach 10. That old hole 9 is now 18, so you head to your car.
-- Distance variation. Depending on which tee you choose and which basket location is in place, you can have 12 holes less than 300 feet and seven longer than 400 feet. Three holes can play longer than 500 feet.
-- Disc loss potential is extremely low. Undergrowth is negligible. A REALLY bad shot could end up in a backyard. The creek/ditch is small enough (and dry half of the year), so losing a disc there is unlikely except for one small but deep pocket of water near the No. 8 basket.
-- Maintenance is good to very good. There is the occasional debris, but I've seen much worse. The grass is mowed regularly, and when storms knock down tree limbs, they are quickly taken care of.

Cons:

-- The short tee pad on No. 11 is ridiculously small (3x7). This is made worse by the fact that an 8x12 concrete slab is 6 feet from the tee pad. That larger slab used to have a picnic table, but that is long gone. All that remains is a small charcoal grill. Cut it out, and you've got a good tee pad for No. 11.
-- Tee signs are basically non existent. Hole numbers and distances are on small wooden posts. Baskets are numbered.
-- Several holes have mandos to try to keep you away from adjoining fairways or park roads. And there is the double mando on 17. I usually hate double mandos but somehow don't mind this one. However, the mandos are not always clearly marked, and one that probably should exist on 15 doesn't.

Other Thoughts:

-- Alternate tees are a mixed bag. Some are really well done with the longer tee changing a line or adding significant distance. No. 11 is the best example. The alternate tee not only adds 65 feet (210/275), but it changes the line significantly and brings a lot more trees into play. I expect to birdie from the short tee, and I hope to make par from the long tee. The long tees on Nos. 1 and 3 add 125-180 feet and bring the creek/ditch into play. Many of the other simply add 25-50 feet along the same line.
-- Map on site, but it's not at hole 1. It's at the other end of the park by No. 10 (the old hole 1) as you enter the park; it is somewhat hard to read and has the old hole numbers.

Solid Fort Worth Area Course

Reviewed: Played on:May 21, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

(3.091 Rating) A medium length course partially under a live oak canopy.
- SKILL LEVEL FRIENDLY - Recommended to me by DGCR member aclay, whom is a local player and also my guide for this one. When I first looked-up the length of North Park, I never would have guessed this place would have been as friendly as it was for such a wide swath of skill levels. On paper, and as I experienced, the short tees are Intermediate level. What makes it appeal to so many more skill levels is the forgiving landscape. Just about no overgrown areas. The chance of losing a disc is near zero. These are key attributes that will appeal to both Novices and Rec players. In addition, there are also back tees here, an aspect that will likely appeal to Advanced level players as well.
- CHALLENGING - Speaking of higher skilled players, this one is surely going to please players with 300 to 400 foot arms. Although labeled a par 54, this one honestly felt like at least a par 56 from the short tees. A couple holes were close to 500 feet long and I'm not aware of any regular players that can bomb plus 400 and then plays the short tees. Anyways, having a big arm is going to be the biggest separator in scoring. There are however numerous moderately wooded holes and pinging a tree early is going to make getting par real difficult. As alluded to before, I think the short tees are Intermediate level and the back tees are Advanced level.
- AMENITIES - DISCatcher baskets and big concrete tees are a plus for any course. I want to say the tees were 6 by 12. There also two of these pads on 17 holes. Other amenities include alternate basket placements, practice basket, posted course map and seating at about half of the holes.
- NAVIGATION - I had a fantastic guide for this one, so I may have missed something. Overall, the flow felt good enough, but partially flawed. First, it helps that there's a posted course map, but it doesn't help that it does not reflect the updated layout as the map indicated hole (10), is now new hole (1). The tee signage is ok, which I'll touch on more below, but it's nowhere near the point of unacceptability. Once someone realizes that (10) is (1) and (1) is (10), a quick reference of the map should clear up any questions while on the layout. Most transitions are short and several are intuitive.
- RAW BEAUTY - I thought the course had some modest appeal to it. Personally, I just really like the look of holes under an older live oak canopy and there is a bunch of that aspect here. The course is well kept up, but there is noticeable relic trash like broken glass and small bits of plastic littered in numerous spots. The course is also surrounded by urban sprawl. One may argue that this place is a desert oasis. Overall, I scored North Park a touch above average for beauty.

Cons:

Only one moderate issue and a few minor things or preferential cons
- TEE SIGNAGE - If there was one thing that this course needs, its updated tee signs. Perhaps new ones are on the way. The tee signs are very simple, just a number and distance. A couple looked like they were falling apart. Updated signs as a whole here could really add some sparkle.
- SAFETY HAZARDSA handful of holes have a park access road in play. Not really a big deal, but its still not ideal. I have a feeling this course can get busy due to its location and appeal factor. Players will need to be more aware of their surroundings more than normal here.
- HOLE VARIETY - About average in my opinion. Generally lightly wooded to moderately wooded. Several of the live oak wooded holes have blended together in my memory already due to their similar feel. There are a couple short holes, numerous of them play between the high 200s and high 300s and a couple holes are also over 500 feet from the back tees. Mostly a flat landscape, although there is one nice downhill play on (6) old (15). Likely no water in play unless it had rained recently, or it lands in the one low spot on the dry creek bed along (8) old (17).

Other Thoughts:

North Park is solid disc golf. It's not exotic, but it has very respectable gameplay in a forgiving format. This course is going to be perfect for leagues and perhaps even small one-round tourneys. Also good for cards composed of multiple skill levels and big groups. Overall, this one felt like a mid 3.0 post play and sure enough when I tallied up the aspects and attributes, it settled right into that number. I think this rating number is about all this course can achieve considering the size of the park and the quality of it. Players traveling to the metro area should definitely consider checking it out if you find yourself within a half hour to forty-five minute drive, but if you're coming to DFW to play the cream of the crop, this likely isn't it. For those that live on the east side of Dallas, I don't think this is a must play course, unless you are trying to play all the top 30 metro courses, or so. It's a good play and all, but it's just not quite disc golf nirvana.
- TIME PLAY - It took our three-some and one walking tag-a-long, almost 2 hours to complete the round. I think we talked a lot, but it was a good time.
- THANK YOU - I got to experience my first Fort Worth area course with DGCR trusted reviewer aclay. Pretty ironic that when we spotted each other pre-round that we were wearing shirts with identical disc golf sayings. "How to Play Disc Golf: Throw, Swear, Look for Disc, Repeat." A pleasure meeting you sir. Thank you for being our guide and I hope we can do it again someday.

Great local course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 1, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Local to me and well kept public course
-concrete tee pads
-easy to locate baskets/tee pads
-good variety of shots/OB/mando to avoid
-not much chance to lose a disc to water or overgrowth
-pin locations can change (A or B) to add variety
-Ideal Discs store very close by!!

Cons:

-very busy during weekends
-lots of trees to hit if you're new-ish

Other Thoughts:

This is my local stomping ground course. I really enjoy playing here and it is not too challenging to a beginner. Provides great practice for anhyzer/sidearm shots and obstacle avoidance, whether that be trees, mando, or OB. Mando's are identified by arrows on trees. OB are identified by orange spray paint, but are fairly obvious (creeks/fencing/etc). No real way to lose a frisbee unless you really grip lock one and rip it over someone's backyard fence, but i haven't done that yet so you're probably good! :)

Pros:

Most of the tee pads are good
Nice variety of shots, short, long, wooded, open
Decent amount of shade
Good use of limited land
Pretty good flow
Good use of trees

Cons:

Used UDisc app, finding next hole is lacking without it
Bugs can be bad later, I suggest bug spray

Other Thoughts:

I'm trying many new courses. If this was my local course, I would probably play it all the time. I live about 35 miles away and have better courses closer. It was a nice slightly above average course. Some of the holes are a bit long for a beginner. It is a pretty good intermediate course

My favorite hole is #17. IT has a mando between 2 trees about 50 feet in front of the teepad, maybe 10 feet apart. There is OB just past the basket

My go-to course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 5, 2019 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The variety of the holes ensures that I do not get bored easily, and it helps me improve my technique. You will very likely never lose a disc, but it will force you to improve your technique. But there are a couple of nice and long wide open shots for the joy of launching it

Cons:

Course tends to get muddy and stay muddy longer, though eventually it does dry up. The layout is confusing at times, and the course will get crowded from time to time.

Other Thoughts:

in the heat of the summer, the ample shade is nice, although it makes the non-shaded holes in the back half of the course more brutal.

Great technicalish (not a real word) course 2+ years drive by

Pros:

Great course with some wooded technical shots and a few semi open holes. Great for everyone from "pros" to kids. Not too long and lots of shade for most holes.

Cons:

Doesn't drain well after rain. I have to agree that the signage could be improved and it certainly is difficult for new players to figure out where the next hole is.

Other Thoughts:

This is a great course! I've played it over 28 times and it never gets old.

Nice course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 7, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Great course flow. 9 down... 9 back.

Hole variety is spot on. Hole Shots, long drives, ace potential, elevated baskets...

Concrete tees are great.

Cons:

Signage is lacking. I like the markers on the tees, but first timers often ask where the next hole is.

Also, the baskets are hard to see even when they are in the open. They could use a good coat of bright colored paint.

Other Thoughts:

I love this course. It's close enough to work that I get to do 6-9 holes on my lunch break. As a less than average player, this is a hard course to make par, but still helps with shot development and accuracy.

Whoever put the basket on hole 11 in the top of the tree is a crazy nut! I LOVE IT!!! Never change it!

Amazing Design 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 21, 2016 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

For a fairly mundane piece of land, the holes at North Park are diverse, dynamic and challenging. It offers a few "window" shots and a few longer (500+) air shots. Most holes are ceiling-type shots but the lines felt very distinct and different. I felt challenged on nearly every hole to hit the right line with the right disc on the right angle. I enjoyed the slight elevation change holes. Nearly all baskets are guarded. For a technical course, there is not much real "rough" but rather many obstacles instead. This pushes players for the birdie but cuts down on lost discs/time spent looking for a disc.

Cons:

Navigation: The flow of the course meanders in many different directions. No tees are too far from the previous hole but many holes are visible at once and it can be confusing to find the correct next hole without any signs.
Difficulty: From the pro tees, most holes are challenging on a pro level to birdie but very forgiving to save par. I think elite, top-tier courses have a little more length, a lot more risk and more true par4s (instead of par3.5s).

Other Thoughts:

I hate courses with boring holes or repetitive shots. Aside from hole18, the holes at North Park are anything but vanilla. It may not be the most picturesque course, but I think it has the best design of the 100+ courses I've played. My rating may seem high, but I find the navigational issue a small price to pay for fun, challenging holes with a lot of character.

General Review 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 13, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Pros:
1) It is very hard to lose a disc here. Not a lot of water or woods for that matter. Hole 10 might be the only hole that you could honestly lose a disc on.

2) Everything on the course plays as a par 3 and going from the regular tees to the advanced tees, definitely makes a difference in how challenging the hole/course becomes. Which is nice because some courses, there really isn't much of a difference. So if you get bored playing the regulars or if you have mastered those tees, try the advanced and I'm sure you will see a higher score that round.

3) Tons of shade

4) Plenty of holes that you should be able to let lose of a disc and not worry to much about going long or OB

5) Course is well kept, but even when it isn't, its not like you have to search for your disc very long. Grass never gets too long and their are no woods to shoot into making you have to search which is nice. When you want to play but don't want to have to worry about losing a disc, this course and L.L. WOODS are my go to courses.

Cons:

Cons:

1) popular course so it is busy a lot of the time even during the week.

2) TONS of trees. Especially from the advanced, you have even more in your line. If you get lucky you can get through, but you can also have a bad round and get super frustrated because you will some how find every tree on each hole.

3) due to how many trees there are, if it rains, this course can be muddy for quite some time. Due to the shade and moisture, it can get pretty nasty out there for majority of the holes. Then the tee pads get really nasty and hard to throw from. I would avoid this course if it's rained recently.

Other Thoughts:

Great course though, one of my favorites. I wouldn't bring a noobie here though, they will find a tree almost every time which would most likely deter them from wanting to play again because they didn't have a good first time experience. Try LL Woods for a new player. You always want a friend who hasn't played before to have a good time and want to come back and play with you, this is not that course. They will double if not triple a lot of these holes. Trust me, I know. I've brought two friends with me separately and I had to convince them after 18 that not all courses are like that because they did not have fun. Doing bad at anything sucks.

Nicely kept, challenging shots, signature holes.

Cons:

I think a couple holes could be more well mowed, but that is probably due to all the rain we have had lately. If you want to go play somewhere and bomb throws off the tee, this isn't the course for you.

-The elevated basket makes for a nice signature hole.

-Nice balance of open vs. wooded shots.

-Good elevation for a DFW course!

Cons:

-Right off of 820, it's very noisy.

- The layout is weird and convoluted (but I'm glad they made a DG course with this abandoned gas well land.) It is easy to shoot at the wrong basket in several spots. Take a cellphone pic of the course map at the start!

Fun all around course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 20, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Most of the course with the exception of 13-15 is well shaded, which is great in the summer
Plenty of trees in the fairway. It's not the most difficult course, but you can use the trees to play with different lines.
The creek is clear and shallow, so you're not likely to lose a disc. Part or all of it is often dry in the summer.
Great use of limited space and elevation.
Concrete tees, and two on most holes.
Good place to bring friends who are new and still have a good time.

Cons:

Some tee boxes are a little short for a good run up.
Not very intuitive layout. Hard to know where all the tees and pins are the first few times. Bring a map.
Need better numbers on the baskets. The first few times I played I threw at 18s pin on hole 2.
Blue baskets are hard to see even when you know where they are. I'm considering going in at night and painting them neon orange.

Other Thoughts:

I was going to list litter as a con, but there are trash cans every few holes. It's not the courses fault, it's lazy players. Most of us carry bags...throw your empties in your bag until you get to a can!

For the area, it's one of the more wooded courses. Great for working your technical game and still has a few holes for long open drives.

Overall, it's a nice quiet secluded dg only area good for beginners and still fun though a bit short for advanced players. I live a mile away and am happy to call it my home course.

Very nice park and course that is well taken care of. A lot of the holes have long and short teepads as well as as long and short pin placement. fun course but bring a map 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 2, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-lots of trees, a creek, and elevation in play
-design makes good use of a limited amount of space
-nice dual concrete teepads, bridges over the creek
-creek is shallow and there is little rough, not likely to lose discs

Cons:

-very difficult to navigate. no signs, no numbers on the baskets or tees
-course is pretty simple even though there are a lot of trees, not very challenging for the advanced player
-blue baskets are not the easiest to see, neon yellow, orange, or pink would be awesome
-no stand out holes or signature shots

Other Thoughts:

After years of construction woes, this park is finally finished and looking great. The flow is unintuitive but the layout manages to maximize the use of a small amount of land. That said, the course doesn't feel crowded and there not any big issues of safety since most of the holes that are close together have lots of trees separating them. The trees are not real dense and have little to no undergrowth but there are enough of them to force lines and block errant shots.

The course is pretty short from the short pads but it is great for beginners. There is a better variety of distances, lines, and challenges from the long pads. The creek offers an extra challenge but will not eat plastic since it's only inches deep and a couple feet across at it's widest. A handful of holes make use of the elevation on the north end of the park.

Overall, this course offers a fun round, especially for the beginner or intermediate player, but only if you know where you are going. Make sure to bring a map or you might be frustrated. The obstacles make for a good score spread if you're playing competitively. Worth driving to play if you live in the metroplex and I wouldn't be disappointed if it were my home course. I think the rating has unfairly suffered for the navigation issues and previous issues with construction in the park.
