Recycled farm put to good use

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 2, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

A nice mix of very open and parkland holes. This was a farm, you can tell. Mostly open, but some holes have some tricky trees to get around. It is a large tract, so us slow bunnies are not likely to get run over by the faster players. At least, starting at no. 6 when things really start to stretch out. The course is largely unto itself in Widener Park. There are though walkers, runners, and picnickers. Not many on the weekday that I played. Cannot vouch for the weekend traffic here. Pleasant place. Seems there are now only two pads (short and long) per hole. I wasn't looking for the pro pad though, so maybe it was there at each hole. If, however, there are now just 2 pads per hole, I think that simplification was a good move. Pads would be crowded at nos. 1-5 (I believe), if not also elsewhere. The course is very near the Rochester airport. If you are visiting, this could be the last thing you do before getting on the plane. A very nice way to end one's trip to the area.

Cons:

Being exposed to the sun rather directly for most of the time playing will be oppressive in the summer. Floppy hat that covers the ears/back of the neck and sunscreen (if not also bug spray or cream) are necessary. And water! I don't remember being bothered much by insects, but that might be because I most definitely had on bug cream already. While pleasant enough to play, some holes are rather boring (nos. 3, 9, 14, 16, 17). The short (now red) tees are certainly an afterthought compared to the longer tee. Latter I believe all had concrete pads while the short tees are green turf and sometimes put in funky locations. Not the end of the world but…

Other Thoughts:

All in all, a pleasant course. I suspect early spring and early fall are very nice here. Summer is not all bad. Just be ready for the heat. And I've learned my lesson about playing in the snow in upstate NY. Though on my original to-do list, I did not get a chance to play Riverton while I was in the area in August 2023. Hopefully, I get to pair the two next time. As it was, the disc golf play at Chili was paired with outstanding Letchworth State Park (the Grand Canyon of the East). Hope to visit all 3 next time!

Beautiful Course worthy of its Standing in DG History 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 7, 2019 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- Fantastic mix of open and technical holes, utilizing the natural features of the old farmland.
- Well planned hole layouts and benches mean cool-downs and short breaks are easy.
- Gorgeous aesthetic that remains fun and varied from hole to hole.
- Popularity means meeting new Disc Golfers is easy, and it is frequented by many of the highly-rated players in the area.
- Regular tournaments at this location mean updates and maintenance are consistent and constant, this is a "baby" of the local DG Club.

Cons:

- Does not drain water quickly, will remain muddy for a few days after even a light rain. Water proof shoes are a godsend here.
- The rough can be very rough at times, though this is, I blieve, a part of the design.
- Mosquito season can be a pain, but not unbearable, bring bug spray.

Other Thoughts:

- Very long layout means longer rounds (placed this in "Other Toughts" as depending on your preferences this is either a pro or a con)

This course was the site of the finals of the 1999 Pro Disc Golf World Championships for a reason. A beautiful hole, still being updated by the local champ and community favorite, Mike "Zog". Mike's love of this course shows in his dedication to maintaining the course throughout the year.

Chili DG 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 1, 2019 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-outstanding design uses the land well, bringing trees, creeks, rough and ob into play
-concrete tees, good signs and awesome new baskets=simple navigation
-park is dedicated to dg, which makes for a tranquil round
-course has great history, but continues to be a great challenge for players of all ability levels

Cons:

-the rough is just that...rough. Keep your disc in the fairway if you want to keep your disc
-with its popularity comes traffic, and with the length of the course a round likely will take 1.5+ hours

Other Thoughts:

Chili DGC is another outstanding Rochester area course, requiring length, accuracy and strategy in abundance. Course design & maintenance are top notch, and navigation is very straightforward due to the good signage & concrete tees. We are very lucky to have so many great courses in our area, and Chili is right up there with the best of them.

Pronounced with a long I, not like the food 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 28, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-Excellent course for both beginners and experienced players
-Concrete tees
-Challenging, but very enjoyable

Cons:

-Quite long
-Tee signs are a bit dated
-Moderate chance to lose discs

Other Thoughts:

The Chili course at Widener Park is truly a fantastic place to throw some plastic. This course offers just about everything for any type of player. There are holes where you can really rip it, as well as some finesse shots to practice your lines.

The course has a really good flow to it, with holes 1 and 10 starting around the same area, making a mid round break very easy. The tee pads and baskets are in good condition for an older course, and it has always been very free of litter when I have played. What makes this course really fun are the different types of obstacles that you encounter. With tight fairways, anhyzer lines, and inverted bunkers, it makes for a challenging round for any player.

The biggest downside to this course is that it is long. Hole 11 is a beast at 911', as well at hole 18 at ~700'. This can make for a very long round. Also, there is a moderate chance to lose a disc on several holes along the edges as the brush in these areas grow unchecked. There are also several areas that are not mowed along the fairways, which makes a disc easily lost in the tall grass. The tee signs could use an update, but they give you an alright idea of what to shoot for.

Overall, this is a fantastic course to play, probably one of the best in the area. If you have friends that are new to the game, this would be my second pick in the Rochester area, behind Basil Marella. For a fun, longer round, I recommend coming out here. With an amazing course layout, I understand why this course was picked to hold the 1999 Pro Disc Golf World Championships.

I really liked it alot 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 8, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Nice wide open playing field.
Cement pads.
Not much worry of losing a disc.
Fairly easy to find the next Tee pad.
Just enough obstacles to make it interesting.
Nice and quiet.
Beautiful area.
Nice parking lot.

Cons:

Probably my only complaint is that it's super hard to see where the baskets are because they basically are all galvanized grey, no color to stand out. You can look right at it and not see it. They really need some color or something, especially since many of the holes are fairly long or well hidden behind obstacles.
Oh, and I only saw 2 red and 1 blue marker the entire course and I was really looking for them. If you're going to show them on each sign then they should be clearly visible so people could use them if they wish.

Other Thoughts:

I LOVED this park! It was quiet and peaceful and just a pleasure to play through. The length of most (minus a few) holes was just perfect for really airing it out. I like the woods courses a lot but this was refreshing to only contend with a few trees or obstacles and just let it fly. It gave me a chance to try out some of my newer drivers and see what they do. I probably enjoyed the front 9 a bit more than the back 9 and could see myself playing the front 9 twice through sometimes. Though I didn't like 900' hole 11 I can see where a big arm would. That's where I would have liked to see the red and blue clearly marked. If no other hole, at least mark that one. This course is now one of my top 5 courses and I can't wait to play it again.

VooDoo Chili 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 24, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

FYI, Chili DGC, is not pronounced like the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Long i, times two. I didn't know, until a local clued me in (thanks Marshall). The disc golf course has a little water, almost no elevation change, and a variety of widely spaced trees. I liked the first hole the best, playing a little downhill, and a big anhyzer RHBH, that I parked and hit the birdie putt. There are several long holes, and a pair of really long holes (911' on 11, and 719' on 18). Some OB, watch for white posts marking the edges of some fairways. Par 58 overall seemed about right to me, I scored 60 on my first and only round. There are concrete tees with decent signs, and Mach 3 baskets. Circular tin shack on the back 9 looked cozy, provides a rare bit of shade.

Cons:

Very open, not overly technical. I played during nearly perfect weather, but I'm sure wind is often a factor, and exposure to the sun is unavoidable. The distance is the main obstacle on a few holes, sort of repetitious, but making the most of what is there. Layout isn't too confusing, but a course map may come in handy. Keep your dog on a tie, leash law breakers will get a $200 ticket. There were cops finishing a report on a car break in when I showed up, with a distraught looking couple and broken glass on the ground.

Other Thoughts:

Chili is a pretty solid course, and worth a play. Liked what I saw, but not enough pizzaz. Really felt like a ball golf course, tree canopy will rarely limit airspace or force tight lines. Well equipped and well established, mostly clean and nicely kept. 3.75 rating would be my call, I will round up to for on the merit of the front 9, and the two monsters on the back. May cause soreness of the arm, especially if played in succession with additional rounds.

Wide Open Spaces 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 7, 2014 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Concrete teepads, mostly maintained fairways, wide open spaces, and just a little bit of everything to play with. Trees on most holes, but nothing that is closed up. Some righty holes, some lefty. Lots of straight shots. A few over mild water. A few really long holes and a couple short ones. There are benches set up frequently throughout the course which is nice since it is pretty long. And you will probably only lose a disc in high grass if you don't look long enough. Good course over all to play a round.

Cons:

A couple spots are perpetually muddy. A few actual bridges ought to be installed over the creek instead of logs. The tee signs are not helpful at all, take a map. There are supposedly a second set of tees, but if you can find them then you are already a daily player of the course because they are just stakes in the ground. The wind is terribly unpredictable out there too. Bathrooms available sometimes, other times not.

Other Thoughts:

If you want someplace to go air it out this is the place. If you want someplace to test out the flight path of your disc... you have about a 75% chance of wind.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 28, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Nice concrete tees
- Excellent hand painted signs showing layout, par, and distances. (wish they drew the short/mid tees on them)
- Natural course flow with 2 9 hole loops.
- Bathrooms & pavilion on site
- The course is beautifully maintained very clean.
- There is very little elevation on site, but what is here is well used including a few man made mounds, elevated pins, and an elevated tee.
- A few creative obstacles such as a small windmill and a corn crib guarding a basket add character.
- 2 very long holes (911' & 716' par 4s) with a few short ones (207' & 223') to give both the long & short armed players some fun. Most other holes are ~350-400' par 3s.
-Very little lost disc opportunity. Don't be afraid of the 7 holes marked as water - they are almost all just a ditch that is pretty easy to find your disc in. Not much high grass. The brush that is there around the outside is good at knocking discs back in play and if not is fairly open once inside. The only hazard that is a pain are the abundant disc eating pine trees - but those can be solved with a hockey puck.

Cons:

- There is not a lot of shot variety and very few forced lines. Most play almost straight ahead down the fairway where any shot will do as long as your placement is good. This became crystal clear to me when I was showing this course to someone who had never played and I found myself repeatedly saying something along the lines of "there is the pin (straight ahead) keep it in the fairway and make sure aren't in jail behind that pine tree" when explaining the holes.
- It is wide open with very little shade. Bring lots of water and don't forget the sunscreen.
- 3 sets of tees are useless when you can't find the mid & short tees. I've been through quite a few times and I've yet to locate them all. I pretty much consider this course to just have long tees.

Other Thoughts:

Although the course is very open they have done a good job with the trees that they have to create a variety of chokepoints. Most holes have a gap (although usually generous) that you must hit and if you miss it you find yourself in jail behind a very large pine tree or 3.

Overall I really like this course and it always provides a good test to my game. I just wish there was a bit more variety in play here to bring this to the next level. I was very close to giving it a 4.

Chili 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 19, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Easy to drive to from downtown and offers a very rural and scenic experience. Lots of wildlife to be seen, which is nice and lots of small touches that would indicate this course has been worked on and thought about. I really liked the silo and the windmill, my dog loved the creek. The holes weren't hard to find or play (I brought a map, but didn't need to use it).

Cons:

Although there are trees and other obstacles, almost everything can be navigated by throwing over because of the openness. Most of the holes are short par 3's, but 11 and 18 are over 600 feet. I didn't quite understand why there were three different distance markers and I had no idea which one pertained to the cement tee I was throwing from, but it didn't really matter to me because I'm new at the sport.

Other Thoughts:

Great course well worth the visit. The front 9 are mostly straight par 3's, although 6 has an early dog leg left that was fun to play (as a lefty). The back 9 was more interesting starting with #10 which has a hard right break after about 150 feet. #11 is a long straight hole, #14 is a dog leg right and #18 is a long dog leg left. Clearly, whoever made this course spent a lot of time designing it and it's well worth a visit.

Pros:

* Nice concrete tee boxes
* Excellent signage
* Beautiful meadow that is pretty well maintained
* Baskets are in great condition
* Very quiet
* There are a couple monster holes, 700+ feet that were a lot of fun to play.

Cons:

* Could have used more wooded areas, but still the open play is fantastic.
* There was a lot of trash in the parking lot and at various holes along the course
* Park was hard to find from road due to no sign for "Widemer Park". You should instead be looking for a small sign for Baker Park.

Other Thoughts:

Overall I loved playing here. Not as much as I loved playing Parma (mainly due to the mix of woods and fields there), but this was a close second. The course was beautiful, challenging enough for veterans, but easy enough for newbies. There is a lot of open space and it gets plenty of sun, so I can't imagine it getting too muddy or wet. I had a lot of fun at this course and will definitely be back.

Choke Points 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 23, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Long-n-wide concrete teepads. Two nine-hole loops. Excellent online map.

Pretty and well manicured. Lots of nice, little touches (e.g. a mini-windmill). Area dedicated to disc golf. Set upon a fairly flat piece of land, with the occasional random slope. Bordered on three sides by rows of trees. A tiny stream runs across a section of the course.

Cons:

Single basket location.

While the signs at the long tee locations indicate that there are two other (middle=red, short=blue) tee location per hole, it wasn't until the last couple of holes that these small, in-ground markers made themselves easily visible.

Other Thoughts:

The main theme of the course is its choke points. While the majority of the fairways are quite broad, there typically will be trees and/or bushes forming choke points 100'~200' from the tee. Additionally, most every green will also be guarded by trees/bushes squeezing the approach as well. While only a few of these choke points would be considered tight, the steady diet of them will need to be overcome to score well.

From the long tees, there are a few long (four > 400') and short (two < 225') holes, but most fall into the ~300~400' range. Straight off the tee will serve you well in most cases, except for numbers 1, 10, and 12 (rights) and number 6 (left).

For the most part, the fairways are wide enough, and separated by scattered trees, that cross-fairway encroachment should be fairly minimal. The most dangerous spot is a right-to-left tee shot from tee-16 passing over tee-7.

Favourite hole #6: Needing an early left-turner from the tee, the mid-fairway and green-area contains small pockets of trees/bushes, making for a very challenging approach.

The corn crib, or whatever it is near basket-17, makes a distinctive thumping-sound if you happen to hit with your approach - or airmail a 35' putt past the basket, as I did.

Very nice course, worth a play if in the area.

A fun relaxed round awaits 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 29, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

18 nice concrete tee pads. Decent signs at the tees with distances and general hole layout. Signs appear hand painted which is a nice look.

Park is pristine and very well maintained. It seems like a lot of love and work has gone into this course. Grass is mowed, and rough is trimmed to leave baskets and fairways looking great.

No other park activities to hinder your efforts. It's just you and the course. This is a pretty piece of land with some creeks and small ponds mixed in with varying trees and grasses. A round here does feel like a pleasant walk in a country farm.

Even though the entire course has the same feel to it, there is a big variety of hole lengths to keep things a little mixed up. You'll be throwing from 220' all the way up to about 900'. That variety helps make up for some of this course's limitations.

Cons:

Almost every hole has the same look and feel. Course is mostly open with mowed grass fairways, large trees, and well-tended island of trees or bushes. There is not a huge variety of looks and shots. Many of the holes are dead straight shots that require you to miss a big tree or two. Not really any line shaping needed.

No elevation. A basket or two on a very small hill, and a tee or two up a few feet, but it really is flat.

Other Thoughts:

Overall this is a very good course. Being a noodle arm from NC, I prefer tightly wooded courses that force you to make certain shots. If you like a more open course then you would probably rate this course a little higher than me.

This would be a great course to bring a beginner as the fairways are generous, and you can save an errant shot in most locations. Also a great place to,work on rollers. Many long fairways with nice short grass.

This course is flat but used a few small hills and some piles of woods chips to create some variety in the terrain. All that helps, but this would be a great place for an elevated basket or two. I wouldn't want to see the overall look and feel of the course change dramatically, but one or two creative tweaks would liven up a round.

For those of you that do enjoy some technical lines #12 is a nice little 223' shot that has a low ceiling andmfairlymtight window off the pad. Then a RHBH played must either make a decent flick or turnover shot to get to the basket which is wedged on the edge of the woods in some trees. And if you go too far right you end up in some thick woods. Cool little hole mixed in to the open course.

This is definitely a course worth playing when you are in the area, and doubly so if you enjoy a more wide open, less technical round.

A little open 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 20, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course plays through a sprawling grassy park with scattered trees. Many of the trees are dense evergreens that make excellent obstacles and that can really affect your next shot if you end up in or behind one. There are some small stream beds and marshy areas in play that add a little risk reward to some shots. The fairways are nicely mowed, and the park was in nice shape with good baskets and decent concrete tees. The signs have hole layout and distance, and the layout is pretty easy to follow.

The course plays fairly open, so there aren't a ton of shots where you really have to hit a specific line. That said, there is still some variety here, with everything from ace runs to a 900 footer. Many of the longer holes call for some attention to shot placement to avoid the pines and piles of wood chips placed as fairway obstacles.

Cons:

The openness makes the course feel a bit repetitive at times. The designer(s) did a nice job with the available land, and the manmade obstacles like wood chip piles and the silo are fun additions. The tee signs aren't always accurate as to hole shape and distance. The long grass along some fairways is my least favorite type of obstacle, it adds frustration rather than challenge. The shorter sets of tees are natural and only marked with small stakes. Most don't really change the hole much, they just shorten the hole. There are a few holes that are very close to one another, errant shots can easily make it onto other fairways.

Other Thoughts:

Beginners will find some of the holes pretty long, though inaccurate shots aren't terribly punished on most holes here. More experienced players will find some challenges, but it's pretty open and doesn't really make you execute different kinds of shots.

A soggy course with potential. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 26, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

The course plays through, across, and around the marshes and wetlands that meander through the property. The course is mostly open, but the many pine trees keep you honest. The signature of the course is the piles of wood chips that dot some of the fairways, acting as artificial obstacles to the pin. I really like these as a feature and think more courses should use this when planting trees is impractical (as it often is). A couple times my approach collided with the pile, and I navigated the footing for a unique type of putting.

There are a couple of ace runs, and there are several very long holes (one was over 900 feet).

Tee pads are all concrete, but they are not especially long.

Cons:

The baskets are grey and not always very visible from the tee. Navigation is okay, but I highly recommend the map. Several times the closest tee is not actually the next tee.

The tee signs aren't great. They are homemade, painted boards. The distances may or may not be accurate, but the fairways depicted are not helpful and in some cases are just wrong. Hole #6's sign shows the fairway basically going straight ahead, and there is indeed a basket straight ahead. But it's for another hole. The actual basket is a 90-degree dogleg to the left. Honestly, every fairway on every sign looked almost exactly the same.

The tee signs show distances for red and blue tees. Honestly, I didn't realize until I read some other reviews that there were alternate tees (which are apparently just stakes in the ground). I thought they were alternate pin positions. I don't see much point in multiple tees if the tees aren't clearly marked!

This course is really saturated. It didn't rain in the few days before I played, but the course was sloshy, even on the fairways. Wear boots or some waterproof footwear.

There isn't much elevation here. If you can throw 300+ feet with accuracy (I can't!), you will probably score well here.

Other Thoughts:

This course certainly has character with the wood chip piles, marshes, and a variety of windmills here and there. The course seems to be popular. There were 10-12 groups there when I played. It is only about 15 minutes from the airport, so this is a convenient one to hit if you are looking for a round or two before your flight.

Great Open Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 1, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- cement tee pads
- signs in good condition with one par and distances for all three tees
- fairways well mantained and defined
- course flows very well with signs pointing in the direction of the next tees. Starts and ends at the parking lot
- never seems to be a lot of people

Cons:

- The shorter tees are not easy to find . However this is not a problem because I never play them.
- Since the course is wide open and there is not much shade, it can get very hot in the summer
- Hole 11 is par 4 900 feet straight shot with lots of brush on both sides where discs can get lost
- There might be a discrepancy of the distances on the sign and actual distances

Other Thoughts:

Although there are no "wooded" holes most of the open drives require you to place your drive in a certain area. Their are also several "ceiling" drives where you have to keep your drives low to avoid trees. Overall there is enough variety to make up for no wooded holes. My favorite holes include hole 8 which is a possible "ace run" where you tee off from a hill and have to throw around a large tree to the basket less than 200 feet away which is on another hill. Hole 12 also tees off from a hill with out of bounds on your right and the basket nestled in an opening to the right about 223 feet away guarded by a fence. Finally for hole 18 you tee off 700 feet away from the basket and drive down the faiway which turns to the left. If you hyzer too much yu will end up in trees. The basket is on a hill and if you overshoot your put you could be looking at a really hard putt.

8/31/13 I played Chili today and the alternate tees are now very visible by a red plank in the ground
