This is a pretty solid course. New DGA baskets were just installed. The park is well taken care of and the course flows fairly well. The current tee signs do the job, but an upgraded version would look nice. Some direction "next tee" signs would be helpful too, but navigation was never too bad. Fun lines and a good mix of shapes and distance.

One of the More Peaceful Rounds You'll Play

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 9, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

- nice full color tee signs
- ample parking
- practice basket
- port o potties
- course sign
- large concrete tees with nice grooves
- numbers on baskets
- dual tees (tee signs only on white tees)
- good water hazards in play
- moderately wooded with well defined fairways
- lots of wildlife viewing opportunities in a quiet, picturesque setting
- nice retaining walls built as needed around some baskets
- some garbage cans and benches
- navigation is very straightforward
- area is mostly devoted to disc golf, with very minor walking trail hazard to be aware of

Cons:

- baskets are fine, but relatively basic, not great catchers
- course can be fairly wet in some areas, though some woodchips help
- could use some next tee signs in places
- rough can be brutal in places
- pars are a bit too generous

Other Thoughts:

This is a very nice course. I had concerns it was going to be a rough round when I saw how wet the bioswale area near hole 1 was, but most of the course stays relatively dry. Some areas have woodchips to help with this. The course didn't blow me away, and sure, Canyons and others fairly nearby are better, but this is a respectable course in its own right, and given when it was installed (1982), it's that much more impressive.

I came early in the morning and there were deer everywhere, birds singing, and lots of wildlife. For being this close to the Chicago area, the escape from infrastructure was very nice. The course is well maintained overall and mowed. Some aspects of it are showing their age, such as the very faded course sign at the beginning, but for the most part the course was in good shape. The heavy grooves on the tees were really nice on a dewey morning.

The baskets are pretty basic and aren't the best catchers, but they generally were in good shape otherwise. There are lots of amenities here and it felt like a full service, well thought out course with few outside interferences like in some parks. I have to agree some of the area course ratings are inflated, and for me this course wasn't quite a 4, but it is still a very nice course. The tee signs were fantastic, and dual tees are also nice. The long tees mostly just add a bit of length if you want to play longer, and not much more than that, but the tees are also nice and large which is always appreciated.

I think one of the bigger downsides here is that there isn't much elevation change. What is here was incorporated very nicely, and some of the approach shots to the basket have some dips and hills that add a lot of challenge. It's still a fun and challenging course, and I'd probably recommend it for intermediate and up. The biggest reason I might pass on this course for beginners is the rough. It is quite bad in some areas (in the sense you "dont want to go in there if you don't have to", but still is what you'd expect from a disc golf course). Not only is it a bit thick, but it's thorny in places. I usually play alone and not having a spotter here can mean scraping up your legs pretty bad finding that disc. Definitely don't get annoyed with your shot and throw 4-5 drives like I have a habit of doing.

It seems like there are some varying views on this course, and I get some of the criticism. It didn't feel very repetitive to me, but there are courses around that have it beat, namely the Lockport/Joliet titans. Still, I felt like this course was worth the trip. The Canyons is worth a drive from another state, this course is not - but if you're within an hour, I'd still come play. I enjoyed myself and I think most people will too as long as they take care not to bury discs in the rough. The water hazards add challenge and interest for me, but might be a turnoff for some people I guess. I recommend giving this one a try.

Pros:

Community Park DGC was installed in 1982. You'd never know it if you just played Shorewood which was installed in 1981, just a year earlier. This seems like as modern of a course as anything else I've seen. It's not the longest course by any means, but it's no pitch and putt either.

The tee pads here are nice and large concrete. All pads were mounted level and many of the holes had long pads. Most of these were just further back from the shorts but it's always nice to have options. There were also quite a few trash cans and nice long benches throughout the course which is always a nice touch.

The baskets are Mach II's. These aren't the best targets out there by any means, but if you putt a little softer you'll be alright. These don't handle laser beam putts well at all. One pin position per hole.

The design of this course is top notch in my opinion. There wasn't a single point during my round where it felt dull or repetitive. The ability to shape and place shots accuratley is paramount here. Being able to throw BH and FH will help you even more. The lines are all fair, whether you can execute the shot or not is a different story.

The added amenities are a great touch. I loved the built up concrete block greens. They prevent you from sliding a shot right up to the pin on one hole and offers a bit of a drop off behind another if you air ball with the pin placed right on the edge. There's a basket on a mound as well, which makes you make a decision to run it or not on an otherwise pretty straightforward hole. There's numerous bridges over the creek or other perennially wet and muddy areas.

The tee signs are really well done. They have a pretty descriptive hole layout showing both tee locations. They also have hole #, distances from either tee, pars and a next tee arrow. They're just really sharp, clean looking signs. I really liked these.

The flow of the course is generally very easy to follow. The next tee arrows helped but there weren't any long walks in between holes and most of the paths between holes were freshly wood chipped making them easy to spot.

Cons:

The rough is ROUGH. Ending up off the fairway is not what you want to do here. There's a very, very real chance of lost discs if you do. Lots of thorns and poison ivy right off the fairway. And it can get thick, really, really thick. Not only that but the creek and a pond can come into play as well as numerous swampy areas if it had rained a lot recently.

The baskets are really pretty bad here. Back in the day when I didn't know any better Mach's were fine. But with all the great new models coming out these things just seem worse and worse every time you see them.

Not the longest course by any means. Most holes are under 300'. Not a con per se, but if you like just airing it out hole after hole, shot after shot, this won't be the place for you.

Probably not the course you'd want to play in the spring or after heavy rains. It's a pretty swampy/marshy area that appears to hold water for lond periods of time.

Other Thoughts:

This course was the biggest surprise out of all the courses I played around this area. It's not that I didn't think it'd be a good course or anything. I was just surprised HOW good of a course it is. I'm glad it was the last one I got to play down this way, it was a good cap on my Joliet bagging campaign.

The Canyons and Highland are both a step above Community Park. But this one is a solid third place in the area in my opinion. I'll be playing this one again the next time I'm down here without a doubt. Don't overlook this course when checking out courses in this area. Very solid course.

Ahead Of Its Time...In 1982 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 21, 2016 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Gather round children and uncle thrembo will talk about the old days. Now remember, when this course was put in (1982) most throwers were still tossing lids (nonbeveled edge Frisbbee's mostly). We didn't have Nukes etc yet. So courses tended to be shorter and a little easier. I can see where modern players would consider this course boring or too easy and I would admit that modern nearby courses such as the Canyons offer a much more fun and challenging experience.

This course is well maintained though and does tend to grow on you the more that you play it imo.

Cons:

Well, it is on the short side. I guess you could go old school and play the course with a nonbeveled edge Frisbee or with just your putter to simulate early 1980's type play.

The course is a little vanilla, but I kind of like the prairie style holes and it is a little different than most of the areas other courses.

Other Thoughts:

Worth playing? Absolutely. I would recommend playing some of the other local courses first though if traveling to the area or passing through.

I dont understand the current rating. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 31, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course was well kept. The grass was cut and clean fairways. The course had recieved a lot of rain and due to the design had only a little standing water. It was saturated but playable. These tpads were by far the best of any course i've played on due to the serated/ etched design shown in the pictures. Baskets were positioned elevated or with punishing drops due to retaining walls if you over threw.

Cons:

BORING. Holes 3 through 18 were like the twilight zone. It was just the same formula over and over. Straight shot to a dog right or dog left with an open fairway. No complexity at all. All those trees and very few entered the field of play. You would expect a wooded course to make a drive a challenge on occasion with the addition of a 30 foot maple or a patch of brush impeding a direct drive. They just didnt use what they had to make the course even moderately difficult. Even some of the "pro" tees played easier than the close tees. The course didnt challenge even a novice player. Hole 2 was the most unique requiring you to lay up or have an exceptional over river shot at the pin. beyond that this course left much to be desired and even seemed to play short compared to others in the area. I dont understand the disc rating this course gets but at least now I can say i played it to check it out.

Other Thoughts:

If you disagree with this reveiw please comment and let me know. I personally think this course has artificially inflated rating from the local club that probably helps maintain it. All negative reviews get down thumbs that is strictly against the dgcr review process. The club is jtown or something and have their name engraved into the basket at i believe hole 4 .

Overhyped if you've played any good course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 30, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Tee pads are very grippy. Concrete was scored soon after pouring, giving little room for even sloppy feet to skid.
-Good degree of wooded environment to take away from the community park (see what I did there?) feel.

Cons:

-Taking a change of 'basket is to the left, basket is to the right' out of the equation, I feel like I was playing the same hole for about 14 of the 18 holes. There is no 'standout' hole to remember this course. I believe I said the word boring about half a dozen times during the round.
-Pars are unfathomably stupid. Thank gall for the DGCR app correcting for a hole with a 300' par 5.
-If you like airing out your arm, or even feeling like you've done more than push an elevator button, you will find pleasure extremely rarely on this course. And dont you try to call this a technical course either. Cuz you know in your heart it aint.

Other Thoughts:

I was told by many, many different people (in real life even, not just yous whos going to vote me down for rating this course poorly) that this was 'the course' to really find nirvana at. 'It's got variety' they said. 'It's challenging to veteran and newbie alike' they said. 'The most interesting part wont just be the bridges you cant believe are still standing on this decrepit yawnfest' they.. well, hinted.
If you have been to any, and I mean any, of the somewhat surrounding great parks- West Park, Dellwood 'Canyons' Park, hell even Oswego/Eagle Ridge (even after all the trees have been cut down), I cannot fathom how someone would call this course good, exceptional, or even worth their time.
If it were in my backyard, I might play it occasionally. But we made an actual destination of almost an hour, bypassing many other good courses, to see what the mythos was about. And we were left wanting. So much so, we played Shorewood afterward and had a significantly better time.
End point: I can tell this is an old course, and that's fine. I can tell this course hasn't had love in a long time, and that's fine. This course is not conveniently located for most, and that's also fine. But why oh why does anybody who actually know what a good course looks like actually think this place is worth praise- let alone 4/5 rating? Well, I guess we cant know the answer to everything. *Steps down from soapbox.*

Great Course for all Levels 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 15, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Easy to get to
- Long and Short Concrete Teepads on a lot of the holes. The tees are also rakes really nicely and have a bunch of grip on them. I really like them.
- Some very nicely built structures on the course to make the course safer and to make some of the holes a bit more challenging and fun to play.
- Has its fair share of open and wooded holes. With pretty much every hole having trees to compete with somewhere along the line.
- Pretty Easy to navigate. A few of the long positions can be missed but they arent hard to find.
- Majority of the holes are on the medium to short side. So there are a lot of birdies out there but at the same time on a lot of the holes you can get into a lot of trouble so those birdies can easily be bogeys
- There are a few long holes here but they do have a bit of trees to contend with so even the bigger arms dont have too much of an advantage
- On site facilities for bathroom and water.
- Has a decent sized parking lot. If there was ever a bigger tournament here I could see that being an issue but its not bad.

Cons:

- Not too many places to open up you arm and trhow which is a good thing.
- Theres not too much elevation here but the little bit that is here is used well.
- There are some spots on the course that do not seem to drain well so there can be some pretty sloppy spots.
- There arent really any holes out there where you look at it and dont know what to do.Everything is pretty straight forward with a couple of options and doesnt tax your brain too much.

Other Thoughts:

Reminds me a lot of courses back home in WI. Plenty of woods with enough of it open to give defining fairways makes it a lot of fun to play. I suggest this course to anyone looking for a new course to play.

Courses like this are how we grow the game 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 31, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

Fun and interesting course plays through a section of a quiet community park that's relatively isolated from other park activities. Starts and ends in a large in a clearing off of the woods, giving you a chance to warm up before venturing into the woods for some shot shaping.

• Disc Play: Well balanced variety with a nice selection of semi-open and moderately to fairly well wooded holes of various shapes and lengths; annies, hyzers, straight, some suitable for spike hyzers.
+ Mosty flat, but makes the most of the available topography with a few holes presenting mild but significant elevation changes from tee to pin. Several baskets near drop-offs plus an elevated basket create some risk/reward opportunities.
+ Distances are a bit on the short side (even from the longs tees), with most fairways rewarding placement more than distance. While there aren't any monster length "grip'n' rip" holes, there are a few where players who throw 350-400 ft with accuracy can set up birdie opportunities that noodle arms will never get to see.
+ The rough gets thick in spots, punishing fairly for leaving the fairway, but even the more challenging fairways are quite executable.

• Aesthetics: Pleasant park setting is very clean and easy on the eyes. Landscaping stones prevent soil erosion around many of the roll-away greens give the course a cleaner, more cared for look. Course is well maintained and it shows.

• Equipment: Spacious, raked concrete tees are grippy and have an arrow in front of them indicating the direction of play. Tee signs show hole layout, #, and distance and relative positions for both tees (where applicable), but only present at the short tee (IIRC). Baskets are old DGA's, but still in good shape and catch well.

• Navigation: Between painted spokes on the baskets (white points to shorts, blue points to long), well -worn paths, and tee signs, you won't find too many courses that are easier to get around. You can print the map, but we didn't need it.

• Memorable holes: Starts with a fun open shot over a marsh where you have to avoid a menacing tree if you hope to card a deuce. Love the pin treatment on #2.

Cons:

Way more right than there is wrong:
• Poison Ivy (specifically in the rough on the left side of #7).
• Plenty of low lying spots that retain water - I wouldn't recommend playing here the day after it rains.
• Longs should provide more challenge for better players.

Other Thoughts:

Channy's a really fun course that's well cared for. Nothing here will knock your socks off, but if you appreciate a course that's well conceived, executed and maintained, you'll really enjoy playing here.

Particularly well suited to Novice, Rec, and Intermediate players, I don't think there's quite enough to challenge Advanced players. Not to say better players won't have fun here, but IMHO, that makes it better for casual rounds than tournament play.

I particularly like what they did with the pins on holes 2, 4, and 14. Joliet seems to have some of the best courses in Chicagoland, and this is definitely worth a visit if you're in the vicinity.

Beautiful Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 13, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Beautiful course with great upkeep
- Many fun holes requiring a variety of shots
- Good equipment throughout, from teepads and baskets, to the signage and benches
- Good flow and pace throughout

Cons:

- The course is mostly flat and offers very little challenge through elevation
- Can flood after significant rain and get quite muddy/soggy after more moderate showers

Other Thoughts:

I went back and forth between giving this course a 3.5 or 4.0 disc rating. The lack of elevation, and general lack of challenge during many parts of this course due to wider fairways was making me lean towards the lower score. However, what this course lacks in general challenge, it more than makes up for by being incredibly fun to play.

The course is not overly punishing, and most of the fairways are narrow enough to force you to hit a line, but wide enough to be somewhat forgiving of less than perfect shots.

The cut stones built up around holes 11 and 12 make for interesting greens, and are one of several instances of the course making the most out of the limited elevation.

While in general navigation on this course is straightforward, if you are not paying attention to the marked stripes on the baskets indicating the direction to the next hole, there are a couple of chances to get turned around, like going from 12 to 13.

While you should not expect a terribly challenging round of golf at Channahon, even from the long tees, I guarantee you will have a fun round at an excellently manicured park.

Fun. 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 17, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

Aesthetic-- multi use park set in the "burbs" of chicago (kind of a burb of joliet actually), the disc golf areas are almost disc golf exclusive. plays along some back yard fences in the back but never really in play.

Tees- oh. my. god. the tees here are awesome. dual tees with "siped" surfaces to ensure good grip even when wet. short tees have signage, long tees do not (unless same as short tees)

Baskets- old but in good repair. no issues identified when I was there.

Upkeep- Immaculate. the landscaping through this course is impressive to say the least. many retaining walls, "garden-like" areas, and thoroughly maintained pathways through the low areas.

variety/risk v reward- there is a little of everything here. left, right, short, long, a great variety. pin placement here is great in some places and meh in others. some of the man made elevated tees are placed with significant rollaway potential.

Signage-- beautiful signs here. not sure if all of the distances are accurate however. some holes feel significanly shorter than listed.

Routing and Nav-- so so easy. follow the painted tines and the immaculte pathways and you surely won't get lost!!

Cons:

Wet- I get that this is an uncontrollable but the course was super wet when I was there and a lot of the lower areas were flooded (minimally).

Challenge- I will agree with the previous reviewer there are a lot of holes here that you feel like should be "twoable" there aren't any holes you look at and just say "holy shit, what am I going to do here?"

Other Thoughts:

ol grimey does good work! :)

Fun, well maintained 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 15, 2013 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

I've only gotten the opportunity to play this course twice, but I really really like it!!! It is by no means an overly difficult one, but it is PERFECT for practicing hitting different lines and trying out new shots. It seemed like every hole was one that I thought I should get a two on (or at least that SOMEONE should get a two on!) but the course definitely will make sure you hit the right shot in order to do that.

The disc golf course at Community Park felt very isolated from the rest of the park, which had playgrounds, bike trails, and other fun stuff. I didn't have to worry about hitting other park users and I felt very much like I was going on a scenic nature hike.

In addition, the course seems to be very well maintained. There were man-made greens, STURDY bridges, perfect signs, and a few of the holes even had two sets of teepads. It is encouraging and inspiring to see so much visible effort in keeping the course in tiptop shape :)

Cons:

Only a couple of these:

*The park is pretty much as flat as a pancake. Fortunately, the scant elevation here is utilized and there is even some man-made elevation that makes things a bit more interesting.

*Hole 4 (I think?) looked like it had a cool basket but the last time I was there it had a garbage bag over it and the ground around it was roped off. Instead, there was I guess a temporary hole that was planted like 200' in front of the teepad without any obstacles whatsoever... whats more it had a "6" on it so I didn't know if I should throw at it or if it was part of another hole! There should be mention of this strange setup on the sign, but I didn't see any :(

*I always make the argument that more challenge does not necessarily imply a better course, but perhaps a teeeensy-bit more challenge here could be useful... though I wouldn't want this to come at the expense of the "fun factor" that is all over this course! The long teepads attempt to address this issue, but they are not quite enough, and they are not present on every hole.

Other Thoughts:

Overall, a great course and one you should go out of your way to check out.

Good Job Frank 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 20, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course is very well maintained. It has 2 sets of tee pads and good signage. There is decent distance variation and a good mix of different lines required to score well such as straight shots, hyzers, anhyzers, large turning shots, big hyzers, and long turnovers. There are a few cool and unique greens such as 2,11, and 12. This is a fun course and good for beginners and up and coming amateurs.

Cons:

This course is on the shorter side. The baskets are not the best although that is not a big deal for me. The fairways are pretty generous and there is not many tight gaps to hit. This course is fairly flat and can flood with a lot of rainfall. On many of the holes there is a "cheater" big hyzer line that I would prefer not be accessible.

Other Thoughts:

Frank Grimes has put a lot of time into this course and it shows. If you see him while your there please show your appreciation for all his hard work.

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 28, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Aesthetically speaking, Community Park is one of the best courses around the area; it is beautifully landscaped, well maintained throughout the year.
- Every hole has concrete teepads made with small grooves to aid in drainage, and each hole has an alternate teepad which adds distance and variety.
- There are quality maps that are accurate on distance and the actual terrain, trees, water, etc., along with benches and garbage cans.
- Nice baskets in pretty good condition with tape on the basket to guide players to the next tee (the exception is on #6, which is a rusty, old Chainstar which should be replaced). Also, there is a practice basket in great condition.
- Good shot variety; need both the hyzer and anhyzer to hit the fairways. Some fairways are moderately to fairly tight so the lines can be demanding.
- Pretty good use of elevation. Yes, this land is flat but the designers intended to make use of as much elevation as they could either teeing off uphill or downhill (#3, #5, #6, #8). Playing the alternate tees will increase this a bit more.
- Good course flow - no overlapping of holes, the baskets are typically a short distance to the next tee box, and the course is easy to follow with walking paths. Lots of other activities on park grounds (ex. baseball fields, children's park) but definitely not an obstacle to the disc golfers.

Cons:

- Length - for seasoned players Channahon is probably a little short on distance. Pretty much every hole is reachable with a good drive excepting holes #14 and #17. (for most beginning/novice players this course wouldn't seem short)
- Hazards - the main obstacle on this course is clearly the trees. There are several tree-lined fairways with some heavy rough on both sides including trees and shule. Water only comes into play on holes #2, #15, and #16
