A Driver's Paradise 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 2, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

If you've been hitting one too many trees lately with your discs and want to give them a chance to fly on some wide open fairways, this is the course for you.

It has most of the normal amenities, concrete pads, decent baskets, benches on some holes & next tee signs, but what stands out really is just the room to throw. Most holes you can try out different shots, discs, or even a different hand altogether with minimal risk of hitting anything. Definitely a course to work on other aspects of your game with plenty of distance available.

The elevation is nice as well and out of all of the courses I've played, this one reminds me most of a ball golf course. Not quite as well maintained but the grass was mowed when we played, there was no trash in sight & we didn't see anyone else playing on a Saturday morning until we were on the last few holes.

Cons:

The major con is of course the lack of variety or challenge in obstacles on most holes. Yes there are trees there but if you can manage the distance, most should be layup pars or a long birdie putt.

Make sure you know which basket you're throwing at as I had to rethrow on a couple on the back nine as there were multiple baskets in the same area. Basket placement in regards to this and other factors should be reviewed and a minor redesign would definitely help things.

Other Thoughts:

If they went in and planted some trees to alter the flow & up the challenge, it would increase the difficulty and probably bring more players to the course. I've seen them do this at other more open courses and within a few years at most, completely change the personality & repeat playability of the course.

A 2020 Perspective 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jan 15, 2020 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

A wide open course with all the basics.

-Amenities: DISCatchers, practice basket, adequate concrete tees, course map. Signs with hole #, distance, par, sometimes map, and pin placement indicator.

-Elevation: One of Lenora's strengths is that it plays along hills. You'll go up and down and along and beside and on top of hills. Lends some interest.

-Beginner Friendly: Good place to take a beginner. Especially with marked pars that are way too high, inexperienced players will feel better about their throwing.

-Multi-Pins: Quite a few holes have alternate pin placements. Sometimes they significantly alter the challenge, while in other cases it's superfluous.

-Hole Design: Adequate considering the lack of obstacles to work with, but not great. As mentioned, there are both up and down plays requiring different skills. About 6 holes deal with notable trees, forcing a play either around or through them. Walking paths or woods create a stay-away area on another 5 holes. A few hole descriptions: (3) plays blind over a mid-fairway hill. (4) has a mando tree forcing a hyzer play. (8) is a 450-footer with path on the right heading past a leafy obstacle and towards the woods. (10) plays with a steep hill on any shot leaking left. (13) is a right-turning hole through a stand of about 3 trees. (16) is the only moderately wooded hole on the course, straight uphill.

Cons:

There are very few trees.

-Wide Open: Shot shaping is almost zero on many, many holes. There simply aren't any obstacles, or the obstacles are so solitary that they are easy to work around. A touch boring.

-Shade: Another effect of no trees is no shade. It's blistering in the summer sun.

-Wind: Another effect of no trees is lots of wind, sometimes a debilitating amount.

-Variety: About the only holes that feel excitingly different are (13) and (16) throwing through thin stands of trees and (14) throwing into a sparse grove. Otherwise it's grip it and rip it.

-Parring: A small con. The pars on the signs are often quite high by modern standards. Really these are all par 3's, but marked course par is closer to 66 (depending on pin placements).

Other Thoughts:

I think this course would have stood out for its inclusion of all amenities in past years, but there are enough very good courses here in 2020 that Lenora is really quite low on my list of 18-hole courses. It's great for ripping out your drivers if a local. UPDATE: Having played even more courses now, I think Lenora is too wide open to run with most of my other 18-hole courses. I love playing it, but trying to rate objectively I think it's Reasonable.

-Parking: Make sure to use the park entrance near the ball fields (not near the water park). Park in the lot on your left next to ball fields, and the practice basket will be just across the road.

Nice Open Course for Beginners 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 10, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

Well maintained, nicely marked, and it flows well. They also have little brooms next to the teepads so you can sweep them off if you need to.

The course is almost entirely in open field, so it's a good place for beginners to practice driving - you probably won't lose any discs.

Cons:

The course is almost entirely in open field, so it can feel very repetitive.

Other Thoughts:

It's a nice open field course that's well marked and well maintained, but it can feel like you're playing the same hole over and over again.

It's also a pretty short course so it's probably the best for beginners, but it's still fun overall.

Lenora Park 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 15, 2016 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Has practice basket

Has concrete tee pads

Has tee signs

Multiple basket placements for some holes

Has many benches and trash cans throughout course

Much more open than wooded fairways will be appreciated by the beginner, the power player, and any player trying new discs

Most holes have changes in elevations

Has good course flow

Well-maintained

Restrooms

Free parking but can fill quickly due to other parkgoers

Cons:

Wide open space makes the course seem monotonous but the wind and changes in elevation can be factors

No next tee signs - can be confusing for a first-timer

Not much shade - can really get hot in the summer

Course can get crowded with other parkgoers as it's popular with the locals

Other Thoughts:

This course will be one of the most wide open, very forgiving courses you'll find in this part of Georgia. It's great for trying new discs and working on rollers as the grass is well-maintained. You'll usually come across different kinds of wind on any given round here, so I like to bring drivers with varying stabilities. I typically see more parkgoers than players here and the trails are close enough on some holes for them to delay the game. Also a good halfway point between Redan and Alexander parks if you're looking for more shade and more challenge.

Laid Back, Wide Open Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 23, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

You can throw hard through the whole course pretty much.

It's a great place to bring beginners or less experienced players. Few obstacles and fairly generous pars means everyone should have a good time.

Cons:

Hole 7 is pretty close to the road, so if you have a poor drive there is a chance for your disc to hit people on the path or even go into the road (yes, this happened to me once).

Most of the course is wide open to the sun, so it's rough to play during the summer.

As others have said, lots of people like to use the course area for other activities (picnics, kids playing, football, photoshoots - you name it) so every now and then you have to be careful of that.

Because the course is so open, wind can really take hold of your disc sometimes.

Other Thoughts:

For more of a challenge I would recommend Alexander, Redan, or Little Mulberry park, but Lenora is a reliably good time if the weather's nice.

Gotta love the grass 2+ years drive by

Concrete tees, well maintained, easy to navigate, decent signage, good for practicing major rips. Only a few technical holes - mostly clear, long rips. Some elevation changes - moderately hilly as Atlanta courses go.
Located in a great park

Cons:

Not very technical
Wind can be brutal
Some potential for conflict with other park uses
Maybe a few short holes (<=275)

Other Thoughts:

Only a few technical holes - mostly clear, long rips. Some elevation changes - moderately hilly as Atlanta courses go. A bit boring for me but the wind can make it very tough.

Wide Open Spaces 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 15, 2015 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- Well maintained course. Grass mowed, tee boxes and baskets in good condition, some tee boxes nicely repaired.
- The open spaces really give one a chance to "grip it and rip it", to try out driver discs, see how they fly, to work on one's throwing form, etc. without much risk of losing a disc or being way out in the trees or water.
- The uphill and downhill layouts give good opportunities to learn and work on making those shots, which is something I like to be able to do from time to time.
- The gym building has discs for rent and also for sale, often at very good prices.

Cons:

- On entering the park, the sign say for "disc golf" to go straight ahead when one SHOULD make the first turn to the left (where it's marked "baseball complex") n order to park near the practice basket and first hole. That really needs to be fixed above and beyond any other issues.
- Pars: I don't know what the criteria for assigning par values was, but some of those par-5s aren't. I'm no expert nor power disc golfer, and I should not be making drop-in birdies and easy back-to-back birdies. Ditto that for some of the par-4s; the length is not enough for that designation.
- Signage: the layout can be confusing to new users of the course. "That tee box right next to the basket is not the next hole" can be said for many of the baskets. Some courses have rings at the base of the basket that points to the next tee-box. Signs pointing to the next tee box would also be very good.
- The mandatory on Hole #4 should be marked on the tree. The only "warning" is a sign at the tee box.
- Other park users are on the walking paths and some come out and play on the grassy areas, and they must be watched for while playing.

Other Thoughts:

-I really like Lenora Park's open spaces and the opportunities it provides to work on my long(er) game. People who have complaints about that should try one of Gwinnett County, Georgia's more technical courses.
- Again: be aware of the road signs directions. Enter the park at the entrance near the red barn and take the first left where it says "baseball complex". If you follow the signs, you will be parking a LONG way from the first tee.

Wide Open 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 30, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Nicely maintained course.
- One can really let it fly here without much worry of obstacles.
- Great for beginners.

Cons:

- Too open, if the county could somehow plant some barrier trees and shrubs it would be a great course.
- Can be very busy. Usually around 5 or 6 other parties of players on the course.
- On many occasions I have had to skip a hole or be very cautious as there are often people who decide to take a picnic lunch in the middle of the fairway on holes 4-7. Seems like the park-goers could be more considerate of disc-golfers. There is plenty of park left for them to have their activities.

Other Thoughts:

I learned to play disc golf here, so it is sentimental more than anything to me. I now live closer to the much more technical Alexander Park and play there a few times a week.
Lenora really is a great place for beginners. It can be a great confidence booster otherwise. If one is playing to the posted pars, he should be WELL under par as there are a few super easy par 5s and 4s. I usually play the whole course as if it is a par 3 course.
If I have new discs in my bag, this is the first place I go.

Pros:

The park is nice and well maintained. There are some nice long holes. Ample parking

Cons:

Way too open with few obstacles. Small teepads, no secondary teepads. Seems like the pin positions hardly ever change. Only one blind hole on the course. Not very challenging at all if you can throw far and fairly accurately. Very windy at times, made worse by the lack of trees. Bathrooms not close, water fountain not close.

Other Thoughts:

This is a good course for beginners when the wind is not bad.

Great course to let it fly. This is my home course, i started here. Its a great place to start and learn. I practice and break in new disks here often. Multiple holes with alternative basket and tee placments. The walk makes for a great workout, terrain is up hill down hill from hole to hole.

Cons:

For pros it doesnt offer much challenge and if you dont know the course you could walk to the wrong hole. The park it self is very active and events do tend to spill into the course making some tee shots annoying.

Other Thoughts:

I like playing here alot and use it to polish my game. The basket have been replaced recently, maps of the course are avalible in the gym and a larger one on display at #1 as well as the lost and found.

Fun, not that challenging 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 25, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

I'm repeating a bunch of other folks, but like everyone has said, course is in very good shape and well maintained. It's also wiiiide open. You can run around blind folded all day and not hit a tree. If you like to throw bomb after bomb after bomb, this is your course. You can basically play this with 2 discs - a long range driver and putter.

Cons:

Signage, signage, signage. I was totally lost after hole 6 and played the wrong hole. There's a tee near the 6 basket, but it's for hole 10. Hole 7's tee is a long way away, hidden by trees. I didn't discover this until I'd thrown 450' down hole 10 and had to hike back up.

Other Thoughts:

Great park facilities to drop off the wife, kids and dog while you play!

Not much of a challenge except to throw the correct distance. Even shots 45 degrees off course don't cost you a stroke since there are almost no obstructions.

Grip it and rip it 2+ years drive by

While having wide open fairways is fun, it doesn't lead to much of a challenge as far as shot selection goes. But that's hardly a complaint.

Review of Lenora 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 7, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Long open spaces and a liberal par allow for first-time golfers to have a good, not-frustrating time. Beautiful scenery and benches for breaks in the game. Alternate tee for hole #3 steps up the challenge of throwing over water. Well-kept ground allow for long rollers and shorts. Very little underbrush or thorns. Onsite bathrooms are very clean and stocked. Parking is close and plentiful.

Cons:

Jogging course runs through part of the course, so be aware of joggers getting in the way. There is very little shade, so bring water on hot days. The wind on this course is unusually strong and can blow your disc far off course.

Other Thoughts:

This was the second course I ever played, and I greatly enjoy playing there on a cloudy or cool day. This course is also the best (in my opinion) for night games with lit discs.

Awesome beginner course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 5, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-Open course, very few obstructions
-Very well maintained- brooms on every teepad, fairways maintained, 5m putting circle things were still outlined from a recent tournament
-Several alternate pins and a couple alternate tees
-At hole #1 there is a message board, lost and found, and a map that shows all the holes and locations of the pins (and alternates)

Cons:

-Hard to find the start point if you turn in the wrong entrance:p If you pull into the entrance by the waterpark, go back out and go to the other entrance
-Having played for about 10 or 11 years, the large amount of open holes became repetitive
-During the summer, due to how nice the park is, it will become very crowded!

Other Thoughts:

Overall, a great course, especially for beginner disc golfers! Definitely worth a drive of an hour or so. There are a few courses around, so hit up a couple in one day to make it a heck a day!

Good Beginner Course for Cutting Teeth into Disc Golf 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 10, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Open Layout. Cant Really not have a Direct Line to the Basket unless you stick in in the "woods" Good for first timers like myself who are new to the game. Really Tests my newbie distance and I am trying to get up to 300' driving.

Safe clean park. GDGO does a great job maintaining the course.

Cons:

A lot of people around the 1st, 18th, 17th. Kids from the playgrounds like to venture on to the 18th fairway. Just yell at them to watch out and they usually do.

Seems redundant in the middle until you get to the 13th. The Open layout while good can get boring.

Other Thoughts:

Good course for beginners like myself. People that have been playing a while are very friendly to help you out if you need tips and advice and are even in some cases willing to play a hole or two with you to help with technique. Course is in decent shape. Lenora is generally safe and have never felt like my stuff was going to be broken into.

Sunday early afternoons are good to go if you want to avoid crowds.

Great place to "air it out" 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 23, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

Perfect place to take your new long range driver and learn how to throw it as there is not a lot of places to find trouble. Wide open design. Great place to buy discs for very cheap at the Lenora Gym.

Cons:

Not much imagination or skill shots needed.
Repetitive.

Other Thoughts:

The course itself is out in the open and you can see almost the entire course from hole #1 on the hill. There's nothing like taking your new long range driver to a course and trying to control it through tight fairways and havng a frustrating time doing so. This course gives you TONS of breathing room and a great place to take out all those drivers and let em rip. Because of the open design, the course is a bit deceiving in terms of difficulty. The holes have some length to them so even though you don't get into a lot of trouble often, you still have distance to achieve. I will use this place as a training ground to get to know my new drivers from time to time. Also, a nice added touch of brooms at each tee pad to sweep off debris if needed.
