A Change of Pace in Delaware 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 18, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

Wide open, immaculately- groomed park course where the challenge comes from accurate placement despite dramatic elevation change and wind

+ Every hole requires thinking through the line, angle and landing you want to throw. The difference between Brandywine and neighboring Delaware courses is that the obstacles aren't visible trees to be avoided: they're elevation, wind and slanted terrain to be compensated for

+ Two sets of baskets that allow for some variety (although much of it is just distance)

+ The designers did a great job incorporating existing features into the course: there's a treed shelf that serves to elevate the first tee and the ninth green, there are old stone walls that run along some fairways, there's a barn and some related small buildings that give the sense of playing on an old farm

+ There are some amazing views from some of the tees and some really picture-worthy holes. Tee #1 is tightly framed by trees with a stone wall running the length of the fairway on the right. Holes #2 and #3 include a few dramatic huge dead trees. Hole #9 has a raised and well-guarded green. The long pin on #13 is perched on an impossibly-high hilltop (that would be a 420' par three with 57' of elevation). The fairway on #18 is a long upward slope bringing you back up to the start of the course

+ Great signage, decent tees and baskets. Well-mowed and completely clean

Cons:

- The one par 4 on the course (600+ foot #5), is just a straight, long hole that doesn't require strategic placement like a wooded dogleg or a water hole does

- The rough is really...rough. Large swaths of knee-deep grasses that make finding discs difficult and time-consuming. The position of the rough is never unfair - there are always adequate (even generous) landing zones. But allowing the rough to be so deep does more than just punish the bad shot: it slows down play. If there's any traffic on this course you're probably going to do a lot of waiting or jumping ahead

- Even though I've praised the views and argued in favor of the "technical" nature of throwing in elevation, I would have liked some more terrain variety. There are wooded areas at the edges of two sides of the course, and a few flat, treed holes would really add to the layout. There appears to be some redesign work going on (especially on #16, where all the basket positions on the tee sign were taped over), so I hope there's also some consideration for incorporating some woods, and not just adding length

Other Thoughts:

~ This course is very cart-friendly, and it's a workout. There's a lot of climbing back up hills you've thrown down. At various times, I was sorry to be pulling a cart behind me

~ Brandywine lends itself to an obvious pairing with "classically treed" Delaware courses. We played Lums Pond, Iron Hill, and White Clay Creek before Brandywine, and Canby West after. There are LOTS of trees to be found in Delaware; Brandywine is just a different sort of course

Rolling Hills and Wide Open Holes 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 17, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Convenient and large parking lot right by 1, 10, and 18
- Bathrooms right by the parking lot (I think it was a port-a-poddie but still, there was one)
- Very picturesque park, love the stone work on the walls! Feels very historic
- Crazy elevation changes, only a handful of flat holes as the entire course is on a hill
- Multiple baskets on each hole so technically you could play 36 holes out here.
- Course was insanely well groomed--I played with a local who said that normally things are super overgrown on the edges of the fairways and its very easy to lose discs. The grass was mowed and the brush was tamed.
- Hole #4 was a really cool top of the world shot that went over a road with water and a bridge. Nice risk/reward as you can stay short of the road and play for par or try and go for the green.
-Hole #3 was also really cool, kind of a multi-level fairway where if you don't go for the green off the tee you have to throw your upshot 20ft up and clear a rock wall.
-Hole #9 was probably my third favorite hole, fairly open and level hole but the basket is tucked in the woods behind a rock wall. I landed edge of C1 and had to putt over the wall which was a fun challenge.
- Wide open enough that it's not too punishing if you aren't pin point accurate. But still obstacles to navigate (trees, rock walls, brush, etc)
- Pace of play was great, didn't really run into too many groups out there. Though it was the day after thanksgiving when I went...

Cons:

- Back 9 was fairly repetitive and not very memorable. You throw downhill for the first 3 or 4 holes. And then you throw back uphill for most of the rest of the holes (with a few flat ones like #17 thrown in).
- Unless you can consistently throw 350'+ you're not gonna have a chance to birdie most of these holes. Granted there are a few shorter holes out there and some that are downhill so you can use that for extra distance. But it's not a course that a beginner could shoot a hot round at. The one par 4 on the front 9 (Hole #5 I think?) was very long and uphill the whole way with a tucked away pin. I was thrilled just to bogey it. Hole #18 was like 450' uphill par 3... which again I was thrilled just to bogey.
- Extra pins for most holes seem a bit useless unless you have elite distance (or some par 3's become par 4's) as they make long holes even longer.
- I can easily see how this course has high disc losing potential. Especially if the rough isn't groomed or things are overgrown in the summer. Many greens are on the edge of the woods. There's a few holes that run right next to deep woods and water.
- No real lines to hit. Your shots tend to be 80% wide open with the last 20% being trees around the green. Not a place to go to really hone your accuracy.
- Wasn't too windy but man if it was this would be a nightmare round. There are few trees and the whole course is exposed on a hill so it would really mess with your shots.

Other Thoughts:

Had a blast playing my round here! Went at an off peak time and was pleased to see how well groomed the course was. If you're looking to practice shots with elevation changes this is definitely the place for you. I think it's a good fit for all abilities as its wide open even it's on the long side.

Would definitely play the course again if I was in the area.

Windy and Winding Brandywine 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 26, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

+ Endless rolling hills in all directions make for quite a breathtaking view as you're enjoying disc golf.
+ Every single hole is a wide open area. There are barely any trees in your way, so the player can let loose and throw their hardest every time.
+ Many tricky pin placements such as behind walls, in the middle of slopes, and nestled amongst the occasional patch of trees.
+ Obviously, there are so many elevation challenges at this course. Every hole uses elevation: some gradually and some abruptly.
+ Every hole features a sign right next to the tee that communicates the par, the layout of the hole, the distance and even the difference in elevation, either positive or negative, from the tee to the pin.
+ Concrete pads at every hole.
+ Clear and unmistakable lines between fairways and rough.

Cons:

- Endless rolling hills in all directions make for quite a repetitive view after playing for awhile.
- Every single hole is a wide open area. There are barely any trees in your way, so the challenge boils down to how far you can throw each time.
- I did not see any 'next tee' signs. Thankfully, most of the following tees are pretty close to the previous pins, with the definite exception of hole 10, so they are not totally necessary. However, it would be nice for the player to be certain where they are supposed to be going instead of correctly guessing.
- The tee pads need a lot of work. Many of them are cracked. Many of them are unbalanced. Many of them are both cracked and unbalanced. To their credit, I did see one of the groundskeepers using heavy equipment to unearth one of the early pads later in my session, but just be wary on these pads. They aren't so sturdy (as of late March, 2018).
- Very few benches or trash cans. With all the hilly walking that players have to do, some might fatigue occasionally and need a place to dispose of their water bottles. (Please carry out with you any trash instead of littering!)
- As this park is within nothing but fields, constant winds of varying power are always present at Brandywine Creek.
- The elevation variances and distances are the only real course-specific challenges. So, if you have a strong arm and are good at throwing in various wind conditions, then you may find the course a bit less intimidating.

Other Thoughts:

I really really enjoyed my time at Brandywine Creek. Its vast fields of bounding hills, while repetitive after awhile, give the course a grandiose sense of beauty. It is a picturesque park to play in. For me, the most enjoyable hole was #4 named 'The Beauty.' A downhill tee-off leads down to the right, over a wide stream and to a pin not too far from the same body of water. I spent quite a few minutes looking around at the natural farmland environment over the hills as I walked between each hole.

But then I remembered that I actually have to play and found it to be somewhat wanting overall with the lack of obstacles and direct confrontations.
I'll admit up front that my arm speed isn't so good yet. So, it was actually a good thing for me that there were no trees in the way. But that was the exact same reason why I found the course to be lacking in difficulty. A more seasoned player would likely have no problem conquering most of these holes by simple virtue of the fact that there is nothing in their flight path.

Still, I understand that the point of Brandywine Creek is to test the player's unbridled might. Not every course should be a challenge of accuracy and perfect placement, and this course executes its strength contest perfectly.

So, forget about hitting trees at this course. Bring your craziest disc golf friends, bring your fastest discs, and bring a pair of sturdy sneakers for all the walking. You're in for a brutal fling fest at Brandywine. Just accept the fact ahead of time that each hole will feel more or less the same, and you will have a good time trying to out-throw your buddies.

Fun Course - Will go Back 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 28, 2015 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- Concrete Teepads are nice and are not too worn in so you get some good grip off of them.
- Multiple Pin placements on a lot of the holes.
- Hills, Hiils, Hills. There are a lot of fun shots out there, where you are throwing from on top of, the bottom of and on the side of some pretty big hills. 100'+ drops or increases in elevation of some holes, make you think about more than just what distance you need to throw your disc.
- Very easy to get to and even if it is not for you then just getting lost and driving around in the area is beautiful.
- Some great scenery from some of the high points on the course. Walking around and not playing would be a joy but having a disc golf course there is great.
- There are a lot of very well placed baskets on this course. There seemed to be a lot of thought into where they should all go. A lot of risk reward shots so you get to choose what type of golf you want to play. Very fun.
- Big Parking Lot.
- Flow from hole to hole was pretty seamless for the most part, there was only maybe 1 hole where I had issues.

Cons:

- Finding hole 1 took me a while and I only found it because there were other people that were walking to it. A sign pointing you in the right direction would be nice.
- I believe it was getting to hole 10 where I had the only issue with not knowing where the hole was but after 15 min of walking around I did find it.
- I did not know that 17 had a long tee until I played the hole in a tourney and thats where we played form.
- The tee pad on hole 4 needs some work. Its just a walking path and there is no clear cut point to where you have to tee from. Its a long hole and behind the tee there is pretty much no run up so it is kinda annoying.

Other Thoughts:

- You do have to pay to park at the course so keep that in mind when you go there.
- There are quite a few blind shots at the course so if you are playing it for the first time be prepared to do a lot of walking up to find the holes.

- Overall I really really enjoyed playing this course and would suggest that if anybody is in there area then you should play it. If I am ever back in Delaware I will 100% play it again.

Searching for discs. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 10, 2015 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Concrete teepads.

Beautiful scenery.

Good signage.

Cons:

The rough off the fairways as so thick that unless you are standing on top of your disc you will not find it.

Most holes are just point and shoot with no real shot shaping. Throwing off the fairway doesn't make your next throw more difficult, you just lose your disc.

Other Thoughts:

I lost a disc here last time I played, and the park called me up and said that someone had turned it in. We decided to play the course while we were there, and that's where are troubles began. it took us 7 hours to play through the course twice, and most of that time was looking for discs that went just a few feet off the fairway. The brush is so thick and tall that it is almost impossible to find the disc you threw even if you saw it go in. On a positive note, since this is such a common problem we ended up finding 12 discs and only lost 2 of our own. Maybe they mow the brush at some point during the year but right now I would say the course is unplayable unless you are 100% sure you can land it on the fairway every time.

The layout is all wide open shots so your shot selection will usually be your favorite driver at full power, and a putter.

Open, Vast, Windy, Hilly 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 25, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Beautiful course, well maintained, great variety of shots, awesome views and a very cool feel from the course with how many streams surround the area and the super old rock walls were impressive. Visually appealing course

Cons:

Whew..... hills.... open.... no woods, nothing in the way, no tricky shots, open open open. The only skill you need for this course is being able to throw distance.

Poor signage, most of the signs on the course were blank, luckily I went with someone who has played the course or I would have gotten lost 2-3 times.

Course is made for huge throwers, massive uphill holes, massive downhill holes, very few times I was forced to use forehand or a tomahawk, every hole is vast and required very little planning.

Other Thoughts:

Great course, I prefer a more wooded course with obstacles and trees. Cannot stand having to shoot 500-600 feet up a hill, on the flip side, shooting down a 500-600 foot hole is pretty fun.

I'd go back... but if i was local to here I may personally find a course that suits me a little better.

needs polishing and reconsideration 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 9, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

All holes have a diagram of the hole

Nice Scenery

Wide open park with plenty of room

Cons:

Hills.... lots of 'em.

Poor Navigation

Hole layout doesn't take advantage of terrain

Zero wooded holes

Inconsistent hole difficulty.

OOB is Briars, Prickers and Poison Ivy

Other Thoughts:

It was my intent to play here as part of a 3 day jaunt which included a little bit of discing while visiting friends in three states (PA, NJ, DE). Of the four courses I had on the list, this was the only one that I made it to, it left me wishing I had chosen a different one.

Finding the first tee (and any tees for that matter) was made difficult by lack of directional signage or an available map.

The grass was ALL crabgrass, mowed crabgrass, but crabgrass nevertheless crawling with little crawling bugs that resembled sand fleas at the beach.

Some of the "fairways" were no wider than walking paths leaving no aid for an intermediate distance player, and as previously mentioned OOB are thick with Prickers and Poison Ivy...

ZERO wooded holes unless you would count the pin tucked into the back end of the second grove on 14 requiring a complete circumnavigation of trees to get around to the pin on a par 4...

The pin placement could be laid out so much better to create a smoother, more enjoyable course... Instead I found myself going down a hill in the hot sun to the pin only to play back up the same hill to the next pin... The "paths" or "tight fairways" on the holes are completely unforgiving leaving beginning layers chasing errant throws into prickers...

Course is passable, but with the tight "almost fairways", minimal signing, and a layout that just runs you up and down hills, there must be a better layout that this course could be reconfigured to, OR there might be a more fun course nearby. With potential a little polishing, a little more friendly OOB landscaping (it could still be OOB, but does it need thorns? I think not), and a small layout change might improve things

Will Definitely Play Again 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 7, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Beautiful park
-Change of elevation
-Variety in types of holes
-Multiple holes that leave you with the thought you would love to play that hole again
-Concrete Tee Pads
-Can be easy and difficult at the same time
-Tee boxes are always within eye sight of where you are finishing off
-Signs do give a general idea as to where you should be throwing

Cons:

-Many tee boxes are close to the pins from the previous hole which could make it dangerous if there are many people on the course
-not always clear which Pin the basket is in
-Make sure you have a spotter on holes where the grass is high or you will never find your disc. Couple of blind holes require a spotter as well

Other Thoughts:

After playing Iron hill in the morning, and White clay right after that, my friends and I were unsure as to whether we wanted to make the trek to Brandywine. After relaxing for a half hour, we made the decision to go because of what some friends of ours had said about the course. We could not have been happier or more rewarded. This is a really beautiful memorable course. There were so many holes that as we stood on the box, we thought this was a sweet looking hole. There is not a ton of variety in the types of shots you have to throw at this course, but you definitely want to keep your disc in site because tall grass and thick woods can grab your disc quickly. I am always a fan of Innova disc catchers, but the mach baskets were usually easy to find because of the open layout. The downhill throws such as I think 11, 14, and 15 are really picturesque holes that are the types that you say to yourself....I would really love to ace this. Being only a half hour from finishing at White clay earlier in the day....I would recommend this course to anyone close to it. My friends and I all agreed that out of the three, would probably all choose to play Brandywine again before Iron Hill, and lastly White Clay. The open layout allows for novice players to score well, but the challenge of distance and accuracy can really push an experienced player.

Be accurate 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 10, 2013 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

It plays pretty long with lots of hills. A few of the downhill holes allow for some big drives. It is a very scenic course and has a few water hazards to deal with.

The signage is OK for the most part.

Cons:

Thick disc eating brush. You can see where it has been mowed on some holes but on others not so much. Quite easy to miss a fairway and lose one in the high thorny rough.

The tee pads are concrete but a few are uneven and cracked in places.

Other Thoughts:

Bringing water and sunscreen is a good idea. The course is really nice but there is very little shade and it can get hot.

You do have to pay but it is only $6 if you are out of state. So if you go car pooling is a good idea, splitting a $6 parking fee among a few people is not a big deal.

Older, Physically Demanding Scenic Course! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 17, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

Brandywine Creek DGC must have been a monster course 30 years ago when it first opened. Even today it's length, many uphill throws, constant winds, narrow fairways and hostile roughs can make it a tough day at the office.
The park is a lovely piece of land with some epic views of the surrounding countryside. There is a kiosk at the start as well as a practice basket and picnic table.
The tee pads are getting a little on the old side. The baskets, although older, still catch well enough.

# 4 is pretty much an epic hole being a long downhill over a creek with some nasty rough along the way to get you into some serious trouble.

Cons:

$6 out of state plates gets a little costly after playing more than a few of these Delaware state parks courses.

The ever present winds certainly could lead to some frustrating rounds.

#9 struck me as a particularly diabolical hole especially after trudging uphill on the previous holes in the sweltering sun. And after finally reaching the top of the hill on # 9 and finding the basket hidden way in the little wooded grove, I knew this course was well beyond my pay grade.

Other Thoughts:

I wish when I played Brandywine that I known of the significance of the rock walls. Hell, I thought they were built by disc golfers recently. The course is beautiful and challenging. It's just not the course to play by yourself at the end of a hot day after already playing four other courses that day.

Pros:

Varied holes and elevations. Long and short holes for a variety of shots and skils.

The course is very scenic and in a quiet area of the park. The course has everything from wide open holes to holes that push through the woods and tall grass. Uphill and downhill holes offer a great variety. Easy to find.

Cons:

Wind! First time I played the wind was challenging and definitely added to the course on the open holes. 2nd time I played wind was really kicking up and made it frustrating for us as beginners to play at all. Due to my own poor judgement of disc and shots I lost a Teebird that got taken by the wind. A experienced player might enjoy the windy conditions.

Other Thoughts:

Very nice course, but my personal suggestion would be to avoid it as a beginner. The tall grass and brush add to the course but make it frustrating for beginners to find lost discs. It's $6 per car for out-of-state to enter but you can really enjoy the park after a round too.

Beautiful but Frustrating 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 15, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

Scenic, 18 hole open course in a nice state park. Very challenging course with tremendous elevation figuring into all but about 2 or 3 holes. Practice basket and porta pottie on site. Course has sufficiently sized tee pads, signs and working Mach 5 baskets at every hole. Some really nice holes here- #1 is a tee shot from between two trees, #3 is a diagonal shot to a basket over a rock wall and signature hole #4 is a long downhill shot then a right turn to a basket in the flat over a creek- as good a hole as there is anywhere. Two basket placements per hole. Navigation is pretty easy. Decent balance of distance and shorter holes.

Cons:

Wind can be brutal and wreak havoc on your round. Signs and several tee pads need upgrades, and the welcome board by the practice basket is a disaster. Favors the guy with the big arm. Inaccurate throws lead to loads of trouble with unforgiving rough. Fairway grass sometimes not cut. Pay to play. Some "next tee" signs would be helpful. Ticks all over the place- bring spray. Benches and bag poles would be welcomed.

Other Thoughts:

Brandywine is loved by many for its topography; scenic views, elevation and beautiful rock walls are ever present. It will be disliked by those who favor technical courses or people who don't have big arms. The wind here can be absolutely brutal, and quite honestly can make for a rotten round. I didn't have much fun the day I played here but have nonetheless rated the course objectively and appreciate its challenges.

More than 30 years old, Brandywine still packs a punch but needs considerable attention. New signs are needed here and several tee pads have seams which can affect your stance and throw. In my opinion, before new courses like Iron Hill are tweaked, more attention to upgrades needs to be given to places like Lum's, Brandywine and Cape Henlopen- historic places that have been good to the sport. A trip to Brandywine is recommended, but prepare for a physically demanding and possibly frustrating afternoon.

Lovely 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 29, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Easy to find. Fantastic scenery. Lots of elevation. Nice challenge. Good signage and concrete tees. Navigation is fairly easy without a map. Some really fun and memorable holes with alot of opportunity to air it out.

Cons:

Some tees in need of repair with some slight slopes and cracks. A little repetitive with the open shots. Park fee of $6 out of state between February and December. In the summer the rough is really brutal, and it can still be so in the spring, fall and winter, as well. The elevation can also be seen as a con due to some tough hikes, but it also provide, at least for this slacker, some well needed exercise.

Other Thoughts:

I've played this course multiple times and it was one of my first few ever. In the beginning I hated this course due to some of the hole lengths, the elevation and the fact that most of the holes are completely open. However, as I have improved my game, I find these same aspects to be absolute pros. I recently played here in a little snowstorm and I have to say it was one of my favorite DG experiences of late. The elevation can be tough with some long walks and throws uphill, especially #5 "THe Beast", but it truly does add to the whole experience as well. The pin placements help to augment each hole's layout and some are just great including 4, 6, 9, 14 and 16. Great use of existing strucutres including the rock walls, the water, an old well and the barn. Being as the course is open and set up high in rolling hills, the wind can truly become an added challenge, but I enjoy the ability to learn my discs better while playing this course. Overall, Brandywine is a little older of a course for an area that boasts Iron Hill and Carousel, but I still very much enjoy its uniqueness and it holds up very well as its own experience. It provides a great chance to learn how to throw for distance as well as to break in new discs. It is a solid course with a good dose of individuality and lots of fun.

Scenic with rolling hills 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 22, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Scenery- rolling hills make or beautiful views overlooking brandywine valley. The use of walls divided fairways as well as a beautiful asset to the course.
Good variety with what they had- overall the variety was ok (see cons). That being said, with the land that they were given, you could tell the thought was there. I enjoyed the addition of the creek on hole 4 which offered variety as well as an enjoyable challenge. Although you may not have to use all the shots you have in your bag, the defined fairways dictate many different lines.
Tee signs and baskets in good shape- baskets were a little bit rusty but caught well. I have heard that baskets are changed but have never witnessed different pin positions. The some of the concrete pads are showing wear but most are in good shape.
Elevation- this is the biggest pro for this course and for me the difference between a 3 and a 4 because of the shear immensity of the elevation changes and the use of it throughout the course.

Cons:

Grass can get very high -For the quality of this course I was not impressed with the level of maintenance. The grass was high which led to me losing a disc.
Variety- as said before variety was ok. I said what parts hd variety, but many holes lacked variety. There were too many straight and uninteresting shots.

Other Thoughts:

Enjoy a round and a nice piece of history when you come to this course.

Great Place but becomes Repetitve 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 27, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

What a great place to throw a round of Disc Golf! I came from Lehigh Valley, PA to enjoy this course. The rolling hills and old stone walls make for a great environment. You almost feel what it would have been like to be hiding behind the 3 foot hand crafted stone walls during the ancient days America, fighting for our freedom. There are an equal amount of downhill launchers, uphill heaves, and level shots that will test all the skills of your game.

Cons:

There are no holes in the woods, they are all in open fields with a patch of trees here and there. This place will eat your disc if you miss the fairway. Long grass and trees with crazy vines are everywhere. We had 3 discs get stuck in trees, recovered all 3 and found another, but by throwing rocks, sticks, and having to climb up a tree to get them. No trash cans anywhere.

Other Thoughts:

Very good course with fantastic scenery. While the elevation changes provide a nice variety, it gets slightly repetitive. Some of the tees and baskets are weathered and could use upgrading. All in all, I recommend playing Brandywine. The course play is above average and the park itself is great.
