The disc golf course, not the Kraftwerk song

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 2, 2024 Played the course:once

Pros:

Wir fahren, fahren, fahren auf der Audubon!

- Decent infrastructure with concrete tee pads and baskets in good shape
- Great mix of open/long wooded/medium distance holes
- Lots of risk/reward throwing over or near the creek that runs through out
- Really nicely laid out basket locations
- Well maintained fairways, throwing rollers very possible
- Lots of straight shots needed to score well along with hyzer and anhyzer throws as well

Cons:

There is construction going on that is putting boards through the fairways of several holes including hole 1. Almost got a disc stuck underneath this crap so it may be wise to avoid it. Hole 18 as well has a wall blocking your drive that acts as a bunker of sorts.

Lots and lots of trash and some graffiti as well. I think some of the trash floats on in with the creek when it's running hard but boy does that distract from an otherwise nice looking course. Some of the trash is just locals being asshats. Found some lets call it interesting graffiti underneath the road that goes over the course. Some of the tee signs look to be vandalized as well. I get the feeling it's not a very nice neighborhood.

There was standing water near the highway holes and mud on some of the other holes. Playing in late December perhaps this is the worst it gets?

I felt like some of the more open holes were too open and somewhat boring distance wise but that may be my skill level. Perhaps if I was a 980 or higher rated golfer and had 400 feet of distance off the tee I could be in line for birdie on some of these holes but many felt like a 3 was almost inevitable.

Other Thoughts:

This is another Dallas area gem of a course. Really well done, lots of area to work with and designed well. I hope to be able to come back to the area some day and play some of the courses I missed and perhaps some of the courses I now love.

Audubon Park

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 1, 2023 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-- Variety. Long and short, with four holes shorter than 300 feet and four longer than 450. Uphill and downhill. Water, both a water carry and several holes with water bordering the fairway. Open bomber holes, and holes that require accuracy or a specific shot (RHFH, LHBH). No. 4 is the shortest hole (180 feet), but requires you to hit a tight line. And water danger lurks 20-30 feet past the hole, so going for the ace brings real danger. Five is 269 feet with nearly 200 feet to clear the creek, and a big tree to navigate near the basket. Six is 528 feet downhill off the tee before flattening out that requires a serious RHBH anny about 250 feet from the tee to turn toward the basket. Eleven and twelve feel similar: long and open on the left with trees/bushes right that border the creek. The difference is the length. Eleven is 341 feet; twelve is 528. Then you get to 14: 682 feet, almost completely open and flat; There are a couple of trees about 200 feet from the tee; after that, you've got a 100-foot wide fairway for 400 feet before a few trees guarding the basket. There can be water left of the fairway.
-- Tee pads are concrete and plenty long.
-- Tee signs are good, with map, distance and par.
-- Practice basket near hole 1.
-- Excellent course map near hole 1.
-- Excellent restrooms (near 17 tee).

Cons:

-- Long walks. From 9 to 10, you cross under a major road. From 15 to 16, you've got an even longer walk back under that road. And then you've got a long walk from 18 to 1.
-- The creek and accompanying water can make the course messy. Casual water left of 7 can make it muddy and hard to traverse. That applies to 8 and 9 to a lesser extent. Holes 10 and 15 tend to collect water. And the area around the 14 basket is frequently muddy.
-- No seating at tee pads.
-- Few trash cans.
-- Multi-use park that brings lots of non disc golfers. Mostly they don't interfere with the course, but the park can feel crowded.

Other Thoughts:

-- This is one of my go-to courses. It is accessible to a wide swath of skill levels. Beginners will be intimidated by the water carry and some of the length, but experienced recreational players and up should enjoy it.
-- A disc store (Griplocked) is across the street from the park entrance.

Some holes are very forgiving with par 5.
Well maintained grounds.
Safe, even when your alone.
Challenges on this course force you to get better.

Cons:

Some signage stolen.
Mostly flat shots

Other Thoughts:

This course is beautiful. I would be willing to pay members fees if they could keep all the signage and keep it a little cleaner.

Decent variety 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 6, 2020 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Good variety of holes, lengths, shots favoring forehand vs backhand etc.

Hole 1 is one of the better opening holes in dfw and uses what it has well.

Cons:

More litter than the average disc golf course. At times it feels outright dirty.

18 is behind a construction course and presently unplayable.

Unclear signage on several holes, easy to get lost if you don't know what you are doing.

Players with 400 ft distance + will find the suggested pars laughable with several eagles in play. There's a stretch in the middle of the back 9 which is just unimpressive, with not much to work with in terms of topography.

A few spots where a poor throw is just a permanently lost disc.

Other Thoughts:

With better maintenance this would likely be a top 5 course in a DFW. Some really good holes while giving newer players a chance to fight for good scores on many holes. Would be higher if the park was cleaner but what can you do.

Hot! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 15, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

Reasonable shade with the trees not impacting most throws.
Plenty of challenge and variety. Regardless of whether you throw RH or LH, BH or FH, some holes will be a joy to play. Others will make you work. Good course for a group session.
Plenty of parking.
Nearby water park would make a great after course stop.
Tee pads were great.
Each hole offered different challenges.
A nice course that doesn't favor one throwing style.
Signage was usually fine but there were exceptions.

Cons:

There is a river just behind some of the baskets. Be careful not to overthrow on those baskets.
Some other places (such as the fence on #1) where you could lose a disc. Not likely to lose a disc but you need to be mindful.
There was one hole (5? or 6?) that we never did find. More signage would be useful for newbies. Once we got back on track, the rest were fine.
Multi-use park so be aware of others when you throw. Biggest impact for us were the bicycles and it was not that crowed. Just be alert.
The walks from some holes to the next ones can be lengthy for some holes.

Other Thoughts:

Bring extra water! You can get dehydrated. Sunscreen on sunny days might be useful although the course does provide reasonable shade.
Easy parking.

My home course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 21, 2018 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course if full of variety. Short holes, long holes, technical holes, wide open holes. This course has it all! Great map on hole one allows the player to easily navigate if never played. The city keeps the park tended to for the most part. Fun in the park no matter the season.

Cons:

Sewage smell will almost always be present, I'm sure it's part of the reason the park was allowed to be built, but in the summer with almost no breeze it can be quite the stench. The tee signs are not accurate for par information, but it works for layout.

Dirty 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 6, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course has a great variety in shots particularly in the long to short. There is a good mix with both left and right and some up and down for a flat course in TX. But for being in TX the location of the course keeps the winds down some. Allowing you to really get into those long shots and there is a lot of them here. The tee pads here are the best, nice, large, and trapezoids. Also the natural ob here was used really well to test even the best players in there distance control especially for the bigger arms out there.

Cons:

I'm giving this course a 3.5 Star because of debris here. I have been to this course 6 times over the course of a year and every time I was here the course is just completely and utterly covered with garbage. That might not bother some but personally I don't like it when I throw a stray shot and I'm looking through garbage and leaves to find my disc. If it gets cleaned up I would say it's a 4. The tee signs there are terrible, they are not that reliable most of the distances are inaccurate and all the pars are way to high. Also with new tee signs this course would be a 4.5 for sure in my opinion.

Good old school discing fun 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 24, 2017 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This course offers a good mix of shots and many holes have nice lines that must be hit. Good mix of short, moderate, and longer holes as well.
The tees are adequate and the signage is passable. Nice course map on the kiosk.
This course plays next to a river, but only hole 5 has water that must be crossed during your round.
There are a few holes that have a low ceiling which adds to the challenge.
Holes 11-13 will make a RHBH thrower work on their anny shots but the RHFH line is also there.
A few aceable holes and there are multiple holes in which you can pick up some birdies. Holes like 2 and 3 are moderate in length and have a good amount of trees with sweet lines that need to be hit in order to score well.
Hole 4 is a short hole, however it is nice and technical.
Hole 6 is a longer hole that play from uphill to downhill with a nice gap off the tee to hit and a nice lower ceiling upon approach.
Hole 14 has a good bit of length and will let you air out a drive.
Hole 16 and 17 play slightly uphill.

Cons:

The hardpack around the baskets and tees will become super slick after a solid rain. Perhaps the spreading of some mulch would help alleviate this issue.
There are a couple of holes, on the front 9 especially, that have a strong sewage smell. Hole 3 comes to mind here.
The pars seem a bit high on the signage.
Hole 17's signage was missing upon this review.
Long walks from hole 1's basket to 2's tee, 9's basket to 10's tee, and 15's basket to 16's tee. This slow the flow of the round down a bit but is necessary due to one half of the course being on the other side of the bridge.
Pretty long walk from hole 18's basket to the parking lot.
Could use benches and trash cans.

Other Thoughts:

This is a fun park style course that offers a little bit of everything.
I enjoyed my rounds here both before and during the 2017 Nick Hyde Memorial Tournament.
This is a multiuse park that sees a lot of traffic. For the most part the walking trails don't come into play here but there might be some other park goers in the fairways at times so pay attention before you throw.
Overall its a fun playing course that will over a little something to players of all skill levels. If you like park style golf with a nice sprinkling of lines that need to be hit then this course will be right up your alley.

A solid course in a nice park 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 11, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Nice big trees throughout the park. Creek comes into play on a few holes but not a huge risk of throwing one in there. Good variety of shots. Some short holes, some long holes, good mixture of left and right turning fairways. Fairways are fair, no random luckfest pinball holes.

Cons:

Not much elevation, pretty flat course. No true par 4's. The long holes are all super easy 3's but very unlikely 2's which is a bit disappointing. They would be better if they were a little shorter or a lot longer. Creek was really smelly by hole 10.

Shaded and underrated 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 15, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-Heavily shaded course. Great to play if the sun is beating down on you.
-Great variety. There are hyzer, anhyzer, straight, s-curve, and blind shots with an awesome variety of distances. Nice elevation changes, medium trees, some water hazards since many holes play close along the river (on hole 5, you have to throw over the river bend).
-Superb concrete teepads and signage (but there could be a few more arrows for course flow... I'll explain later)
-There are many tournaments here from minis, regular tourneys, and tier-A pro tournaments, which is always a tell-tale sign if a great course
-This course is always well maintained. There is a water park, baseball fields, and a kids park right by, but none of those intersect or get in the way of any of the holes. There is decent fishing and also a couple of rope swings for play in the river (I would not suggest using the 2nd rope swing on hole 11 however, since the water and swimming area there is janky). There are plenty of nearby things to do in the area as well.
-Great for beginners, intermediate, and pro players alike.

Cons:

-course flow could be better. Here is the hole break down along with directions and the remaining course "cons":

Park by the water park and hole one is just south of the parking lot by the trees and the fenced off area. Don't throw over the fence, you won't be able to get the disc back. At the pin, go southwest (to the right past the tree line), and you are at hole 2. A lot of woods on the left and right, but a large fairway to work in. Hole three is directly ahead. It has a lot of trees right upfront and plays on a downhill slope with the pin in a pocket of trees. Did i mention there are trees? There are a lot on this course, you will see this come up frequently. In fact, you could probably devise a drinking game based upon the amount of times the word "trees" appears in this review. If you do...invite me. I like bourbon. On to Hole 4 which is just ahead. It's the shortest hole of the course. It is a tunnel shot that hooks off the the left. The spring rains/floods knocked down a tree that has taken out land under the teepad, and unless its fixed, the teepad may be gone at some point too due to erosion. Hole 5 is straight ahead. It requires a throw over the river bend with trees all around. Awesome. They cleared out a lot of stuff (trees/bushes/shruberry), so you actually now have a small window to flick as well. Hole 6 is straight ahead will a downhill lie, over a very small creek, and past a group of trees. Be careful not to overthrow the pin BC the river runs just behind it. Hole 7 follows the river bend. DO NOT...I repeat...DO NOT hit a tree on the right or grip lock or throw an anhyzer by accident. The river is deep here and full of all types of hazards. You will lose your disc. This is a looser tunnel shot through trees...go figure. Hole eight is ahead to the right. A medium-wooded shot with the river bend behind the basket about 30 feet. Hole 9 is right next to it with a tighter path though the woods and a beautiful s-curve for RHBH players will get you by the basket. Note: There is a dead tree close to the basket that could fall at any given time. Don't kick or hit it unless you want it to fall on you. Hole 10 is to the right, under the street overpass. It has a conglomeration of trees right in front, an open area, then the basket is in a pocket of trees right in front if the river. Once again, don't overthrow the basket here. Holes 11, 12, and 13 all play straight along the tree line with the river on the right. There are power lines over head, and as strange as it sounds, there are people the lodge discs into these power lines, so be aware. It is more likely that you lose a disc in the trees on either side of these fairways, or that a slicing throw to the right gets through the treeline and in the river. These baskets all play the the right in tree pockets by the river, except 13 which has more open area in the putting green. 14 is the longest hole at 625 ft. There are heavy woods on the right, and woods with a creek on the left, but i would worry less about those and more about the perfectly placed trees right in the middle of the fairway where you really want to throw your lane. To get to 15, walk straight ahead from the basket towards the walkway, through the trees, and head to the left (hopefully you already spotted this teepad while playing 11 and 12 since it runs somewhat beside them). This hole plays through a good group of trees straight ahead. There is a walking path to the right, so dont smack any soccer moms trying to get in their afternoon jog. Hole 16 is the trickiest to find for 1st-timers. From the hole 15 basket, walk straight ahead and back under the street overpass (you will pass hole 10 and hole 9...watch out for people teeing off on 10 since it is just around the bend to the right). Follow the walking path and the teepad is to the right, close to the walking path, and plays towards the street. This is a short uphill shot with trees blocking much of it. As a personal note, this is a hole you should be able get a birdie on, but it is somehow far more difficult than it appears. Hole 17 is a jaunt to the left. It plays down and then back up another hill through many trees. 18 is straight ahead and to the right somewhat close to the street. It plays through a lot of trees straight ahead 305 feet. This ends back at the water park, which is right by the parking area where you began.

-the course can get crowded BC it is popular. There are several water hazards and a lot of trees to lose discs in. It can get very muddy after heavy rains. It could use some arrows to help 1st-time players. The walk to hole 16 goes right through the hole 10 fairway, be cautious.

Other Thoughts:

This course is just an all-around pleasure to play for those of all skill-levels. Because of the sheer amount of tall, old-growth trees, this course caters to those that have naturally low drives. The trees also mean great shade and disc loss as well, and the occasional squirrel that throws a nut at you. This is one of the east Dallas courses that the pros frequent, and you literally never know who you can strike a game up with...just don't embarrass yourself by throwing in the river!

Good first impression! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 29, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

Lots of variety: short. medium, length, and long holes. Some holes with open fields, some tree infested areas, and some holes with a tree or two strategically placed. Some holes hook left and some hook right. Most holes are flat, but a few throwing uphill and/or downhill. Concrete tees are in place and well done. Signs look to be new for each hole.

Cons:

If you do not know the layout of the course then you may find yourself spending some time looking for the next hole, especially from hole 15 to tee 16. The creek was at a low level, yet we lost two to three discs in the water. I got wet going into the creek for mine which I later lost.

Other Thoughts:

Take a picture on your phone for easy reference. The par count for these holes are a bit generous; some par 5s should be 4s, and some par 4s should be par 3s. Some areas are open with no tree cover so protection from the sun needs to be considered. Also, no access to drinking water so bring plenty. I met some people there through Facebook and they turned out to be very friendly and very helpful and encouraging.

Pros:

What a beautiful course! Coming from West Texas where there isn't anythjng taller than 8', this was a welcomed change. It has a great variety of line options and plays pretty long. There are several holes where you can let it rip down the fairway. It has lots of great trees as well as elevation and water hazards; several of the key ingredients that make a course great. There was ample parking despite a mini going on and a course map to greet you so you know where to go. Great teepads and teesigns too!

Cons:

My only complaint is that the course is way too easy with the "posted pars". I literally shot -18 and felt like I only played decently. Many of the holes are one or two strokes higher par than they deserve. According to my buddy, tournament par is different and according I that I shot more like -2 or -3 down. As is though, it's a great morale booster round with the posted pars. Set myself a new record to beat elsewhere.

Championship DG 2+ years drive by

Pros:

This is a championship course. Now that this course has concrete tee pads it is one of the most saught after courses in the metroplex. This course is a lengthy course with every variety of shot. The difficulty is that of a well laid out course that is achievable, yet difficult enough that you it keeps you on your toes from start to finish. If you want to see where you stand on an advanced level playing field of DG, this is a good course to do this on.

Cons:

The only con to this course is the fact that if you are not familiar with the layout you may get thrown off track in a few places throughout the course.
