Hole 9 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 2, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Very well maintained and beautiful course for the GBO. Long open ball golf course. The 2015 layout was different then 2012. Distance is a plus for this course but not a requirement to score well. Water comes into play on several holes. Flow was great no real backups to speak of. Trees are utilized where available. Good quality baskets. Pin positions are permanent but teepads are natural. So holes can be changed. OB's galore to add challenge to the course. Shot placement is the biggest key to the course.

Cons:

Natural Tees.
A couple of bad tee placements.
Very flat.
Very open.

Other Thoughts:

Really enjoyed playing the course. Looking forward to playing it again in the future. Hole 1's tee is at the clubhouse so restrooms and refreshments available before and after the round. Hole 9's tee returned up close to the clubhouse. Also restrooms after hole 13.

You Mean I Have To Throw Far Again? 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 13, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course is on a very nice piece of property that is normally a ball golf course. The land maintenance is second to none and you will find very little to complain about as far as up keep. There are a few holes that really stand out on this course as memorable. Specifically 1, 3 and 18. These three holes give you the impression that you are playing a real golf course that feels more like ball golf than most any other disc golf experience you will ever have. They are also the hoels that make best used of trees and water on the course. There is a nice little club house near the first tee and the 18th green. There is more balance on this course as far as length is concerned in comparison to the other disc golf course on a ball golf course in Emporia. Most, if not all of the basekts had anchors in the ground showing that this course is comitted long term to hosting disc golf events on their course. The tee pads were very nice and were usually on flat ground. There are several places where OB comes into play to make you think more about your shot, often forcing a placement shot off the tee.

Cons:

There were times when I said, "You mean I have to throw it really far again?" There are multiple holes where you will be throwing multiple drives before you even think about putting, even if you can throw as far as some of the biggest arms out there. There are some holes that may have some thought to them but honestly feel like filler holes. These are usually the shorter hoels on this course that you need to get to shoot well. This is also just a temp course that goes up during tournament times and will cost you $6 a round to play a round near tournament time.

Other Thoughts:

This is a fun course but gets a slight downgrade becasue of the fact taht there are times when you are literally saying, "Wow, I need to throw it far again." That coupled with the fact that it is temporary and $6 to play make it one of those that is worth playing but not necessarily one that I would go out of my way for. I would say that despite the fact that there is a bit more permanence to this coure as compared to the other ball golf course in town, it appeared to me that this course was not as thrilled with us being there. This could be just my impression but I felt like they did not go out of their way to provide the best experience possible to the players.

challenging in conditions 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 15, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

-very long course with a big premium on both distance & accuracy
-great baskets fully installed, i was surprised for a temp course
-water in play on holes 3, 14, & 18, makes for some thought-provoking shots off the tee and in the fairway
-lots of risk/reward opportunities
-tees marked with temp signs and small flags
-lots of OB
-port-o-johns toward the back of the course and facilities in the clubhouse

Cons:

-big open ball golf fairways are terribly exposed to the wind
-the obvious stuff that goes along with a temp course: natural tees, only open once a year, etc
-very long distance makes for a long and exhausting round
-very few technical shots, mostly open and long, no tight, wooded fairways, line shaping not really tested
-over relies on OB

Other Thoughts:

I played here for the 2012 GBO and this course was a brutal beat down in the conditions in which we played. Half the holes are over 500' and 5 holes are over 700'. The wind that weekend was ridiculous: 20-30mph constant with 40-50mph gusts.

The long fairways and omnipresent OB really make you think and plan ahead for each hole and each throw, especially in the wind. The course makes good use of the land, taking advantage of the long, rolling fairways of the ball golf layout but playing into and out of the small groups of trees and other obstacles. The water, the ball golf tees and greens, cart paths, and all tall grass are OB.

Holes 1, 3, 14, & 18 really stood out for me. These had the water (except 1) and the most significant obstacles. Many of the other holes rely on pure distance and OB for challenge but these 4 have interesting options for lines, good risk/reward opportunities, and demand smart golf.

This would be a totally different course without the wind. The layout itself is not terribly difficult but you are really battling the conditions to stay in-bounds and get any distance down the fairway. I was disappointed with the lack of any real wooded fairways. Mostly long and open means placement for second shots and staying in-bounds are the name of the game here.

This course is great for tournament play and is a challenging addition to the GBO course lineup. The conditions and distances make for a very slow tournament round so be ready for a long, grueling experience.
