Respectable Effort
Pros: 1) Signs have Hole #, Map, Par, Distance on 4x4 posts.
2) Concrete pavers laid together to form nicely sized tees. Surprisingly they were all fairly level also, meaning they did a good job installing the base underneath the steppers. I think they were about 10' x 6'. Perhaps a much cheaper option than pouring concrete and something I am going to look in to for future course development.
3) #'d discatchers are some of the best baskets for visibility.
4) Overall the course is well removed from other activities in the park, except for a couple of path crossings.
5) #4 pro tee is an awesome shot. It is a lot of fun to throw down off a sledding hill.
6) Hole #3 crosses the river, although it wouldn't be in play real easily, there are a few other holes that run alongside the river where it could easily become a factor in the hole. I always enjoy water on a course . . . unless I am losing my disc in it.
7) Plenty of trees to make half a dozen of the holes challenging and fun to throw. Add in the river, and a throw off a sledding hill and you have yourself a well rounded course.
8) Beginner friendly course because nothing is too densely wooded and the water is easily avoided with a safe shot.
9) Distance variation is awesome, with 200's, 300's, and 400's and a good mix of everything in between. I love having to throw multiple discs and multiple shot holes where placement is key.
10) Anytime I get to bust out a roller or two I appreciate it.

Other Thoughts: This course is better than the average for the area, but lacking in some features still. It is a lot of fun to throw because of the trees, water, and the sledding hill shot, but it also lacks elevation change on the rest of the holes. A little more variety in shot selection would be better but it just seems that the hyzer is favored a little too much.

Pros: As far as disc golf goes, this is one of the better courses in this Rolling Meadows area, which is lacking high quality disc golf courses. Several qualities set this course above other nearby courses:
*Distance variety!!! This is this course's best feature. Several of the holes force experienced players to bring out their drivers. The bomb off the sled hill from the "pro" tee of hole 4 is great.
*Shot variety on the shorter holes is interesting enough to be fun!
*>9 holes!
*Water comes into play on several of the holes
*Best rubber tee pads that I've seen, baskets, and signs
*Good flow (except for the walk to the pro tee for hole 4)
I would like to stress the awesome-ness of hole 4 from the pro tee. It's a 500 foot shot off of a sled hill. Disc golf-wise, there is no reason to play this hole from the short position. It's just not as fun.

I would like to stress the awesome-ness of hole 4 from the pro tee. It's a 500 foot shot off of a sled hill. Disc golf-wise, there is no reason to play this hole from the short position. It's just not as fun.
Cons: The last comment from the "pros" section can be qualified by citing a pretty big hazard involving the path to the left of the fairway on of 4. It's impossible to see if there are walkers about 200 feet down the fairway. This danger is evident on much of the course... fairways even go right across paths at some point. Be aware and respectful of other park users!

Other Thoughts: The designers did a good job of making this a fun course, but the design forces disc golfers to be conscious of the others using the park, which limits the rating and popularity this course will have.

Roll on by!
Pros: This course is located on a long narrow patch of land. A small creek splits it in half with 2 bridges making it passable at each end. It's rather flat and has scattered trees. Neighorhood houses line both sides.
It introduces disc golf in another new area.
Throwing from the long tee on top the sled hill is fun.
There are a few holes to practice rollers.
Tee signs are solid.
Tee pads are fine.
Good new Innova Baskets.

Cons: I'm not sure why there was a need for a 12 hole course here. It's tight, crammed, and repetitive.
There was very little creativity involved. Water could have been put in play but was not. A pin on the side of the sled hill would have been awesome. There is 1 across the creek shot and it's lame.
Hole 1, 5, & 12 are basically identical holes. Hole 2 & 3 are very similar as well.
The distance on top the sled hill is frustrating. Even the top throwers in the area are going to have a hard time getting a putt on this basket. It becomes a simple layup to get a 3. Boring. Hole 8 is very similar. It's 445 feet. Rip a drive and pitch it up. Take a 3. BORING!!! How about pushing that basket back another 50 to 75ft and placing it near the water. That would make a solid par 4.

Disappointing
Pros: The course plays through a small flat park. The sled hill comes into play on the long tee for hole 4 adding a fun downhill bomb. Some scattered trees dot the grassy fairways, adding some obstacles on many of the shots. A few of the holes play along the creek, it could potentially come into play on a bad shot. There is some nice distance on a few of the holes here, offering some chances to air out some drives. The signage is decent, with hole length and layout. The large paving blocks make for a good tee surface.
Cons: The park is flat and very open, making this course a bit lacking in variety. A few of the holes seemed like they purposely avoided some available trees and instead opted for the wide open shot. The creek could have been used more to add some risk/reward decisions.
There are major safety issues here. It's a busy park with lots of other activities going on in the middle of fairways. Two different soccer games were going on when I played, causing hole 4's long tee and holes 10 and 11 to be completely unplayable without hitting someone. A couple holes play very close to one another, especially in holes 6-8 where errant shots can easily end up on other fairways.

It only serves to further the stereotypes of flat boring chicagoland disc golf, and holds the sport back in this area.

Good Park, Disappointing Design

Hole #3 is fun.
Pro/alternate #4 at 535' is the signature hole here as you will throw from the top of the sled hill. The line of trees on the left side of the fairway and the houses on the right make this a fun, yet somewhat difficult hole.

Other Thoughts: While you see the creek throughout the course it really does not come into play on any hole, save for extreme wind conditions or very poor throws.

Good job with pad and target locations
Pros: For a fairly flat and open park they did a very good job tucking the pads and targets into the trees.
Hole #4 alternate tee from up top of the sled hill is lots of fun.

Cons: The creek does not come into play much, but if it does it is very green with lots of crap on top so your disc disappears with little chance of recovery.
Not sure I like the trees as obstructions at the tee, such as hole #1, where you have to alter your shot to throw under the hanging branches.

Great... In a Way...

Pros: Good distance for each hole. Let's you really get behind some of your throws. Most of the holes are spread apart so there is no confusion which hole you are going for. Good for RHBH throwers with the hyzer. With a creek always on your right side on holes 7-10, a nice hyzer shot will stay clear and no discs will be lost. Same thing with backyards for that fact too. Although I have had a throw go into a yard, it wasn't far in and was easy to retrieve. The baskets are nice and big so it suits well with beginners and experts alike.
Cons: Many trees on the tee box, such as hole number 1. The tree branch hangs over 3/4 of the concrete runway and you are pretty much forced to either throw low to dodge it or throw way left.
Also, could have thrown some variety in for each hole. 2 and 3 seem to be the only holes not a straight shot to the hole. Sure I like the touch of throwing over the creek on hole 3, but it's like 10 feet in front of the tee, so now really a problem at all.
Many times, there are soccer players in the middle of the 4th and the 10/11th fairway.

Beginner/Intermediate
Pros: - Course is set in a smallish park that has some trees and a creek, and a whole lot of other activities going on. There are multiple playgrounds, parking lots with buildings on three corners, and is a popular place for recreation. Interference is definitely possible.
- Mature trees are present in many places, which force line shaping, especially off the tee. #1, #2, #5, and #12 are super tight/low off the teepad, to the point of being ridiculous. Some wider shots/overhand/roller lines are available in some places as well. Other holes are a little more forgiving with the trees, #6 is in a grove, #7 forces a RHBH anny (or big RHBH hyzer), and #3 is around a large, wide tree.
- Creek is a factor on a few holes; especially to the right on #8 and #9. These are longer holes, too, so an out of control shot can land in the water or over the creek very easily.
- Nice elevated tee shot on #4 long, a good bomber hole at 535'. Errant shots have a real chance of hyzering way left into the creek, right into the trees, or way right into somebody's backyard. Keep it clean! Also a few baskets on small slopes, especially on #1.
- Some other tricky basket placements, usually by being placed directly next to or underneath a low hanging tree branch. Adds difficulty for sure.
- Good variety of hole length, there are three over 400', four more over 300', and shorter holes that offer some tougher lines.

Other Thoughts: - A pretty decent course in the park; there is plenty of distance for any kind of player, and some funky lines to try new things. Definitely could see a lot of rollers to stay clear of the trees, or low line drives. Good for beginners to mess around, as long as they avoid the creek. Casual players will find some challenge as well. More advanced players will be able to cruise through, for the most part.
- It can get REALLY crowded here; I had to skip #4 long and #11-#12 on my second round because of lots of soccer activities. Good to come on off hours.

Alright with so much potential

This 12 hole disc golf course was put into the ground on the North end of the Salk Park complex, listed as North Salk Park. The holes wrap around a sledding hill and a creek and wind back and forth throughout the fields. Signage is easy enough to follow, including to next tee signs, although a couple of the distances are definitely wrong. It is easy enough to find you way around from the parking lot at Owl Drive and Bobolink Ln. If you park in any of the other lots you may have trouble finding the course.
The hole length range from 200 to 535 feet, although I do not believe alternative 4 (from the top of the hill) or hole 6 (marked 405) are correct. The scattered tees and creek add a little bit of challenge.
The park as a whole has activities for everyone. Salk Park is made up of North Salk, South Salk, and the Nelson Sports Complex. It has 2 playgrounds, baseball fields, soccer fields, sledding, ice hockeys, pool, and a great paved path for running or cycling. It is an ideal place to go as a family to do all to the outdoor activies you want and split up into small groups to cover everyone's interests.

This park has the potential to be something special. Not neccessarily something championship caliber, but special where everyone can enjoy it.
The overall challenge of this course is disappointing. All the holes that play along the creek at designed to the natural fade of a right handed backhanded player. Which means, you stand next to the creek on your right and the basket is down field and slightly to the left. This is simply the natural fade of the disc and offer no line shaping at all. Not to mention those holes are almost, if not completely, open. It just gets boring. It's the same shot at different lengths. Hole 3 play over the creek, but it is literally only 20 feet in front of you. If you can throw 75 feet slightly downhill, it doesn't really come into play.
Secondly, whoever designed this course (no offense to the park district), looks like the walk the land for the first time and said "this will do". There almost seems like there was no thought put into the course. The trees, creek, and distances could have been used drastically better. Some of the holes do offer a decent challenge with low canopies and such, however, with just slightly changes, it could have gone from okay to super fun. There are very few things hear that can really force a bogey beyond human error. It takes time and thought to put a decent course in the ground. I wish the park district would have gotten some feedback from a decent course designer in the area before putting this in. A better layout (tees and basket placements) would help seperate people taking birdies and bogeys.

The course is still be taking over by other activities that have been doing things there way for a while now. At times I have been there, the sledding hill has been out of play because of cross country practice as well as people setting up a soccer game in the fairway at the bottom of the hill. Holes 10 and 11 have been out of play for another soccer game, and someone was doing calisthenics on tee pad 1. Over time, hopefully this gets better, especially since there are soccer fields further south in the park.
Based on it's current status, I have to give this course a 2.0 Reasonable. I want to give it more, but it's only based on potential and as it stands. This course with a little bit of love could easily be of the best courses in the area. I feel it could easily be built up to a solid 3.5, maybe even a 4.0 type course. Some baskets movements or multiple basket locations, as well as additional tees to this course, could bring it to the next level, as well as help with erosion. There is plenty of land here to even grow this to an 18 hole course down the road if the demand calls for it.
This is a decent practice course but truly nothing special...yet. This course could easily be on par with Visto Del Camino in Scottsdale, AZ. Hopefully the park district will see some decent use out of their course and want to do constant improvements/upgrades. Thank you Rolling Meadows Park District for putting a course within a bike ride from my home. My dog looks forward to catching more voles along the creek.
The course is still be taking over by other activities that have been doing things there way for a while now. At times I have been there, the sledding hill has been out of play because of cross country practice as well as people setting up a soccer game in the fairway at the bottom of the hill. Holes 10 and 11 have been out of play for another soccer game, and someone was doing calisthenics on tee pad 1. Over time, hopefully this gets better, especially since there are soccer fields further south in the park.
Based on it's current status, I have to give this course a 2.0 Reasonable. I want to give it more, but it's only based on potential and as it stands. This course with a little bit of love could easily be of the best courses in the area. I feel it could easily be built up to a solid 3.5, maybe even a 4.0 type course. Some baskets movements or multiple basket locations, as well as additional tees to this course, could bring it to the next level, as well as help with erosion. There is plenty of land here to even grow this to an 18 hole course down the road if the demand calls for it.
