A good 9 hole beginner course drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 24, 2023 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Fairways are defined well and the course is maintained. the course is advertised as beginner difficulty and it is. Hole #9 ends right next to hole #1 allowing for you to easily play the course again if you wish to play 18 holes.

Cons:

The disc catchers are subpar. There are not enough chains to properly catch the discs. If your putt is thrown too hard or there is some angle on your disc when it hits the chains, there is a good chance it goes through and falls out the back of the disc catcher.

Other Thoughts:

Hole #1 has 1 tee and 2 distances. Hole #7 has 1 tee and 2 distances. For both holes it was too hard to tell which distance I was at. Hole #9 was the only hole I saw with a short and long tee. Do not let the disc catchers prevent you from playing here as it can provide an additional challenge and make you better. I do not think it is worth driving more than 15-20 min to play this course.

Mint Hill Park

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 3, 2022 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Mint Hill Park offers a pretty decent 9 hole course with hole layouts that are just as good as some of the more well-known courses in Charlotte.
-Great use of elevation. Holes #2-5 and #7 either go straight uphill or straight downhill. #2 and #4 play much longer because they are uphill, despite the distances stated. I like how this can propose a challenge for the more intermediate/experienced players.
-Layout/flow is very good. Short walks from basket to tee make the round more enjoyable, and #9 basket is right next to #1 tee, which makes you want to play the course twice to get in a full 18.
-This course has a lot of variety. There is a good mix of wooded and open holes, and some holes can be played with a variety of different throwing styles/shot types.
-Navigation is easy. Like I said above, the walks from basket to tee are short. The only sort of long walk was from #1 basket to #2 tee, but there was a sign. First timers definitely will not get lost.
-Fairways and rough are well kept up. The fairways are easily defined, and the rough will punish players on most holes. Although the rough is punishing, it isn't very thick, so discs are easy to find.
-The course is geared toward beginners, but can definitely be a challenge. If a beginner is looking for his/her first real challenge, this would be a good course to do that.

Cons:

-Tee pads, tee signs, and baskets all need an upgrade and/or a fixing up. Most of the tee pads are old and small, and there were multiple missing tee signs. Baskets only have a single layer of chains, which can spill putts.
-I know that the course was designed for beginners, but the course par needs to be updated. The only hole that is listed as a par 3 is #2, which is the only hole under 200ft. I would play every hole as a par 3 except for #7 and #9, which are the only realistic par 4s.
-The fence along #7-9 is bad. There are a few openings, but it still would make a tough time retrieving a disc that flew over it.
-The course can get very muddy, especially around the baskets. The most recent time I played here, it was drizzling all morning, and it was pretty slippery. Also, the mud made my discs very dirty, so I recommend bringing a towel if you usually don't
-The course may be backed up with slower players and kids, which could make the round hard to enjoy. I would try to play on a weekday.

Other Thoughts:

Mint Hill park is definitely one of the best 9 hole courses in the Charlotte area. This is a good warm-up course, as The Scrapyard and Reedy Creek are pretty close. The park itself is nice, and has bathrooms, soccer/football fields, baseball fields, tennis courts, and playgrounds. Definitely a good destination to spend time with family.

Wide Tunnel Touch

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 2, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

A normal kind of course with mild hills throughout.

-Amenities: Big concrete back tees, short mud tees. Single chain baskets, long tee signs with number, distance, map, and generous pars.

-Flow: Solid flow and navigation of holes from start to end.

-"Friendly": Easy to play, well kept, hard to lose discs (except for (7)).

-Shot Shaping/Gameplay: A mix of open and woods holes of moderate length with decent elevation. Holes (1), (6), and (7) are more open shots, with the rest playing through generous fairways. The outside holes have less elevation and more difficulty from trying to throw accurate line drives to deal with ceilings or hole borders. The interior (2)-(6) play along the same hill, utilizing the elevation to force more delicate landings or long come-backers. A couple of par-4s are easy birdies but can also put you in trouble. Overall, holes are all birdieable but may be more difficult in person than on paper.

Cons:

-Straight Shots: The course has basically one shot, which is either dead straight or with just a slight turn in the fairway. This is a slight over-generalization, but it's definitely the vibe of the course. There isn't a lot of creative shaping.

-(2)-(6) Range: These holes are fine, but they play up and down the exact same hill a few times, so they're more monotonous. Of course, this is half the course, so that's a slight issue.

-Short Tees: Clearly an afterthought. They're barely tees, and don't get their own signs.

-Risk on (7): A fence to the left of the fairway on (7) looks like it could keep shots inside of it. The hole is better for it, but golfers' bags and/or moods may not be.

Other Thoughts:

It looks to me like Mint Hill uses the available space just about perfectly. It's a compilation of interesting, straightish shots that will reward touch and accuracy. That said, it's pretty limited in what it has to offer, and it's not a major attraction. On the whole, it's Decent, which puts it on the higher end of 9ers I've played.

I finally found a Mint that I like! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 10, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

Fun 9 Hole course in the Charlotte area. Easy access off I-485.
Nice, small park, yet several facilities. There were a lot of people in the park the early morning I was there.
Park is open all hours, gates were not locked to keep people from getting their outside exercise before staffed park hours. Do you hear me Cabarrus County?
Concrete tee pads (although a little small) good DISCatchers, multiple tees on several holes.
Good mix of hole layouts.
Most of the rough was not too bad.

Cons:

Grass was a little long the day I was there, but I might have caught it the wrong day of the week!
I don't believe all the tee signs are still there, but with the map on here, easy to follow the course.
#6 is supposed to have two routes, however the right, hyzer route, was getting pretty overgrown.

Other Thoughts:

I was impressed with this Niner. I went to two other courses in nearby Cabarrus County this morning, and the gates were locked and marked No Trespassing. Not the case here and plenty of people were using the facilities.
The holes were really laid out well, not just short pitch and putt, but required thought and shot shaping.
After a flat #1, #2-5 was a nice stretch of Up and Downhill holes, not a huge hill, but enough to require some thought and adjust accordingly. Then #7-9 were longer, giving you a chance to air it out.
All of the holes had good sized fairways, not wide open, but they do require some shot shaping. Probably intended as a beginner/family friendly course, which would explain the inflated Pars.
In an area of the park that was pretty much DG only, except for a few dog walkers. One of those returned my "Good Morning" with "Oh, I thought that was a dying sport!" Hahaha. I came back with "Well, definitely not in this town!" Meaning the Charlotte area.
Nice, small suburban town park with multiple facilities.

Beautiful 9-holer 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 17, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

Mint Hill Park is a beautiful 9-hole track work rolling, grassy hills and light to moderate woods.

+ The property is beautiful--the entire park and the course itself. It's a serene "country" setting. You'll forget you're in suburbia. Very peaceful and picturesque.

+ The park has amazing amenities: clean bathrooms, really amazing playgrounds, tennis courts, a baseball field, paved and gravel walking trails.

+ While a pretty short course (typical of 9-hole tracks), Mint Hill has a nice mix of hole designs. There are uphills, downhills, 2 sub-200-foot holes, 2 400+ holes, maybe 1 in the 300-350 range, and the rest in the 200-275 range.

+ The baskets are well placed with guardian trees on some, fair fairways, a few with multiple lines in play, and one with a steep green / death putt.

+ Decent tees, baskets, and signage. Simple navigation. Park at the bottom parking lot near the playgrounds.

Cons:

The number one con for me is that it's only 9 holes! This seems like a big tract of land. I wish they could add a back 9!

- This course is clearly designed for beginners, as evidenced by the ridiculous posted pars. Basically all the "par 4's" should be 3's, the 5 should be a 4 or even a 3.

- This course is a modest challenge for intermediate players. It's a cinch for advanced and up.

Other Thoughts:

Fun course! Definitely try it out.

Warm-up course, Beginner's Paradise 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 10, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

Great challenge for beginners - short, but not a pitch and putt course.
Well marked, easy to navigate. There was one tee sign down (I think it was on 8 or 9), but for the most part this is an easy course to play and find your way around.
Great warm-up or cool-down course for your day of disc golf in Charlotte.

Cons:

Not a lot to challenge more advanced players.
Par is WAY out of line. I can see 9 as a par 4, and maybe 7. Nothing else. I am a noodle-armed player and I shot -5 my first time here. 29 should be par, not 36, and I recommend playing it that way (7 and 9 as 4s, everything else as a 3) - even for beginners. There's plenty of opportunity to score on this course.

Other Thoughts:

I like to play a warm-up round of 9 holes before I start my annual Day of Disc Golf in Charlotte, and this course is perfect for that. A couple holes that I can kind of air one out (as much as I can air one out, anyway), a bunch of holes that are ace runs. Nice, well-kept park that keeps most of the other activities away from the course (there will be walkers/runners, but most of them are aware of the course and pay attention). Actually one of the better 9 hole courses I've played.

Short and sweet 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 17, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

A fun, short beginner friendly course with a decent mix of wooded and open holes.

This course is suited for the new disc golf player. The holes are mostly short and easily reachable for the intermediate to advanced player, but the pars and distances are geared towards the novice.

Keeping that in mind, it's a great 9 hole course.

The color tee signs and ample concrete tee pads bolster this courses rating and make it fun and easily playable.

At the time I played the course, the grass was freshly mowed and there wasn't a speck of trash to be found. This combined with the natural beauty of the old farm land this course covers really makes for an enjoyable (but short) golf outing.

Cons:

The cons aren't major, but...

It is a short, novice level course. The experienced player may be disappointed by the level of difficulty at this course. (If they read the reviews here, they should know what to expect though)

The older, single chain baskets don't grab like the more modern baskets. Could potentially lead to frustrating spit outs.

I can't remember which hole #, possibly 5 or 6, but compared to the level of difficulty of the rest of the course, the fairway was a very challenging gap through the trees.

Missing tee sign at hole 9, and a lack of directional signage could turn off a newcomer to the sport.

No trash cans! Even though there wasn't any trash on the course, there weren't any trash cans along the course. Not a major con, but...

Other Thoughts:

Fun, short course here. If you're nearby, it may be worth playing as a warm up for the near by 18 courses, or a fantastic place to introduce new players to the game.

Take this course for what it is, and enjoy the quick jaunt through some beautiful land.

Ultimate Beginner Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 16, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

Mint Hill is as good a course for the novice as I could imagine. If I lived in Charlotte this would be the place for introducing new players to the game. Unlike many newbie-friendly courses, this one looks like a real course. It is a real course, only smaller and easier.

It's not just an open space. It's a real course, with nice baskets, and helpful signs, and useful tees. It sports real fairway. Nicely-mowed, manicured fairways lined with trees. They are very generous and not overly long, but they present an accurate picture of what the game is about without frustrating new players with holes that will take multiple short drives to traverse.

There is a little bit of distance, with the last three holes measuring over three-hundred feet. New players will learn to throw straight sooner rather than later, because while this course is forgiving, it is rewarding to better throws.

There is elevation. There are uphills and downhills here. New players will grow accustomed to throwing uphill and downhill.

Honestly, I can see this course appealing to true novices, making their way up the fairway in 50-foot chunks, to red-level players learning their discs before moving up to some of the big boys in the area. It's a very well-kept and pretty little park that I hope introduced numerous players to the game over the years.

Cons:

It's great for who it is meant for, but experience players will find little of interest here. The combination of fairly short holes and fairways that will seem like open fields to those who have played much in Carolina means that there is not a significant challenge here for those seeking one.

Other Thoughts:

For veterans, the joy here is in seeing a friend or family member throw a disc for the first time and just possibly grow to love the game. Mint Hill isn't just beginner-friendly. It's a beginner's paradise.

Mint Hill Park 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 23, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

If you live in the vicinity of Mint Hill Park, this is a great course for beginners to learn the basics of the game. With a lot of open, straight fairways, you don't have to worry too much about what line you are throwing. For more experienced players this course becomes a great pitch-and-putt course to use for ace runs.

The course has a variety of shots, from completely open fairway bombs (Hole 1) to holes that require more accuracy (Hole 4), and even some that reward placement shots over big arms (Hole 7). There is a decent mixture of RHBH and RHFH lines on this course, allowing players to experiment with both. Hole 8 is a great example for beginners to learn how a low ceiling affects the way they can drive from the tee. Hole 9, is just a good fairway, with grabby cedar trees on both sides. Windy days can become interesting on the back tees on Hole 9, very fun for beginners!

While the course is definitely a great beginner course, the holes on this course could easily be inserted into an intermediate level course, and not feel out of place.

The fairways are all mainly well maintained grassy fairways lined with trees. The rough on this course has cleared out immensely over the past decade as the Park staff does a better job maintaining it and the popularity of the sport has risen. This makes losing a disc here insanely hard compared to how it used to be.

It also seems the fence near hole 7 has finally been opened up so players with errant drives can go retrieve their disc without having to hop a barbed wire fence. This is probably my favorite improvement this course has seen!

The course has multiple tee positions on a few of the holes, which allows you to squeeze a bit more challenge out of this course!

Cons:

Unless experienced players get creative, this course can become stale quick. A putter, and maybe a midrange, is really all that is necessary to do well here at the higher levels. The use of DiscCatcher Sports as opposed to DiscCatcher Pros is also disappointing. They have a tendency to spit your disc back out since they lack the double chains (making Ace runs more of a gamble.)

When the course isn't being maintained the way it is now, errant drives can be hard to find. As I said in the Pros section, this doesn't seem to be an issue the way it used to. I haven't checked out the creek area if you overthrow the fairway on Hole 6 though. That thorny thicket used to gobble discs up, so beware. So can the thorn thicket on Hole 6 if you overthrow. (But you can always wait for it to rain, then check the creek bed for your plastic.)

Par on this course is not really accurate at all. This is the only aspect of the course that tends to baby beginners. Other than Hole 2, Par should be one less on every hole.

Hole 1's short pad is so covered in run-off mud that you can't see the concrete anymore. It's been like this for years, I wish the Park's staff would get a construction spade and dig it out. Also the one tee that provided the hardest hole on the course (the long tee on Hole 7) seems to have been removed. This doesn't keep me from walking to its old location and tossing from time to time.

Hole 6's RHBH route used to be constantly overgrown, but seems to be maintained these days.

Other Thoughts:

This course will always have a bit of nostalgic shimmer associated with it in my mind. This is where I started to play Disc Golf, my senior year of high school. A buddy and me would head here everyday after school, and throw a round or two. It was a blast!

I am super excited that effort has been put into this course over the past few years! I know I was a little critical of the condition of the course when I first wrote this review. Pretty much everything that could be addressed, was addressed! I plan to start stopping by on days when I want to get in a short round of ace runs and nostalgia, and will bring new players to learn the ropes of the game here again! I sometimes throw in my own Mandos to make things interesting.

Obviously I always wished there were more holes in the woods across the creek from Hole 6, or two tees at every hole to have an "18 Hole" course, but I can honestly say, even without nostalgia, Mint Hill Park is one of, if not the best 9 Hole course I've played. In fact it's better than many of the 18 Hole courses I've played. The quality of the individual holes, and their variety, is high enough, that they would find their way on to many of the quality Charlottean courses, but because it is only 9 Holes - I would feel weird giving this course more than a 2.5. If this was a full course, at this caliber the whole way, you best believe it would get a higher rating from me!

Favorite Holes: 1, 4, 8

Great 9-er! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 19, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

What a great little 9-er! As far as 9-hole courses go, this is one of my favorites.
The holes are challenging without being supremely long. Great use of the elevation on the grounds -- if you imagined this plot of land without the course on it, this layout would be optimal for using the ups and downs of the hills here.
Great blend of shots -- uphill and downhill, left and right, open and alley shots. Long and short tee shots, even a couple blind tee shots.
Old school Charlotte signage with all pertinent info.
Easy to navigate, save for finding the first hole, but the description on the course page got me there. Locals park on a side street, near where 9 finishes.
Doesn't interfere with the rest of the park, except for a walking trail which is off the fairways.

Cons:

Baskets are older and single-chained.
Some graffiti on the signage, especially the last few holes.
I've heard this place gets popular with big groups and single-discers, but I didn't have any traffic just after work on a gorgeous day.

Other Thoughts:

Park seems like a great place for the family. Bathrooms and a nice walking trail. I didn't see any trash cans on the course, but it's only 9 holes, so pack in and pack out!

This is one of the most fun 9-hole courses I've ever played. Feels like an older, seasoned Charlotte course that got cut in half. Not overly challenging, but far from easy -- great for anyone wanting to play disc golf -- newbies will love this course, and seasoned veterans will see that while it's not the toughest course around, it's not wide-open, repetitive flat shots either.
Favorites were:
-- #3, downhill blind through a wide tree fairway;
-- #7 -- longest hole, uphill blind into the trees to set up your second shot, or go way around the left side and hope to find a line at the basket.

Charlotte offers a wealth of courses. If you're coming for a disc golf road trip, I can guess which courses you'll hit, and this won't be on that list. However, if you're here for an extended period, live here, or just want to get in a quick 9, Mint Hill will give you a full smile with only half a course.

So many Eagles! 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 19, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Its a fun little course to play and not too tough for beginers.

If you decide to play by posted par you will shoot the biggest negative of your life on a 9 holer

the use of elevation is pretty good for what little there is. Good mix of left to right and straight.

Cons:

Litter is really bad.

Next tee signage is pretty rough and there are a few places that can be confusing. Its also pretty tough to find hole 1.

it's been pretty crowded both times Ive gone. mostly players with 1 or 2 discs.

No benches or garbage cans

Barbed wire fence next to a few of the holes that you can easily throw over and have a time getting your disc back.

Other Thoughts:

This course gets lost in the shuffle of all of the 18 hole courses in charlotte however I feel like it is my favorite 9 hole course. If you are finishing up your day and youre in the neighborhood it is a fun course and is right next to 485. Not worth driving out of your way but if youre nearbye stop for a quick round

Nice little 9-holer! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 7, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

Very well maintained course in a multi-use park. Course it located off to one side of the park away from other park users and activities. Good concrete tee pads with short and long pad available for some holes. Signs are adequate and tell you what you need to know. Navigation is a piece of cake. I had no issues locating next basket. Course flow is smooth and brings you in a nice loop.

Just what I'd call a pretty little course. Uses elevation well and has several holes that play up and down a hill. Mostly wooded fairways by normal standards, but probably considered more open for NC. Terrain reminds me a lot of some of the courses in Nashville. Nice hills with some well defined fairways that have just enough mature trees in play to keep you on your toes. This course also have a few holes with a little bit of length so you're not totally just threading putters through the woods like at some 9 hole courses.

Cons:

Not really any glaring problems at the course. Hole 1 is probably not the best way to make a first impression, but for the most part this course is a fun little place to play. Probably if you're an advanced player this course may be too simplistic or short, but I found most of the holes to be well designed, and at least had some risk if you couldn't hit your shot.

Other Thoughts:

I don't play a ton of 9 hole courses so I was pleasantly surprised by this one. While not a perfect course, it did force me to break out more than just my putters, and gave me enough challenge that I got in the woods on a couple of occasions. Don't let the 1st hole fool you, this is a cool little 9 hole course that is worth your time if you are in the area.

- Bathrooms, playground, and trash cans among available ammenities.

Cons:

Lost my thrill at Mint Hill 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 15, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Very well-defined fairways, concrete tees, multiple tees available, tee signs, the whole nine yards available in a very well-manicured park. It's one of those "sorta wooded" courses, not really in the woods because there's no shade to be had, more like a park garden with little trees like cedars and brush gone fallow used to line the fairways. It flows well enough and the baskets are great, very visible with yellow tops and basket bottoms. The wire-frame baskets were deep, fat-bottomed baskets that would have given Freddie Mercury something to sing about.

Cons:

Some tees had broken beer bottles all over them. The pars are extremely forgiving, I don't believe in anything being over a par 3 unless it's at least over 330' or more realistically 350-400' and this course had a couple holes under that range as par 4's and 5's. There's no sign that I could see that actually shows you where to find the course, hang a right out of the parking lot (away from the ballfields), past the playground towards the fence at the top of the hill out there in the open. The pro tee is hard to see because it's almost completely washed over with red mud/dirt. There are some long and short tees, but they're all virtually right behind the other with about 20-30' between them, and none of the longs are very long, this course is really short, only a couple in the 300' range. I loved the baskets but they had single chains only, so don't be surprised when piddly hole # 2 with its 150' of ego stroking length spits out your Cubby Ace.

Playability: Not much variety here, all mostly short and straight with some slightly bothersome tree-lined fairways that cause you to sort of turnover or hyzer your disc a little bit here and there.

Elevation: Nil.

Other Thoughts:

Signature Hole: #4. There's really not much of a fairway on this little hole, just a platoon of skinny pines huddled together, as if to say, "Red rover, red rover, send your drive on over," which is exactly what you do, hyzer spike over them b/c they're only ~30' tall at the most. Also a good FH roller hole.

Hole #'s 8 and 9 specifically were really nice and much more challenging, S-curving enough to actually make you think about disc placement. If most of the course was like these two, I'd have no problem rating it in the 3.0-3.5 range. Alas, as it stands now, Mint Hill reminds me of the uglier friend of a group of hot, college girls. You could score well and easily with Mint Hill and it's got a nice personality but every fiber in your body is telling you that you'd rather take the risk of getting rejected by the more daunting Hornet's Nests and Renny's of Charlotte.

This isn't a bad course, and if amenities and things like signs and concrete tees rate high in your book, then you'll like this course more than I did. But from a playing perspective, there are just so many better options. HOWEVA, if I wanted to bring an initiate into the world of DG, this is a great course for that.

It's usually not very crowded. I play it several times a week when I am working from home and I have never had to wait or been rushed on a hole.

Most of the holes reward accuracy over distance.
I love wide open fairways, but they don't make me a better disc golfer. I have learned my mid range game here, and I think that I have benefited from it.

Cons:

That being said there are a couple of holes that seem like throwaways (#2 for instance).

It really could use a few more holes. There seems to be enough room on the site for a few more at least.

The evergreens in the rough will EAT your discs. I have never had more trouble retrieving a wayward disc than I have had here.
Lot's of briars in the rough too.

Sometimes the park has been closed for no obvious reason.

Several times I have had a creepy security guard follow me around in his all-terrain golf cart.
It's nice to know that they are there, but don't park on the fairway!

Dog poop is a hazard.

Other Thoughts:

It seems I have more cons than pros for this place, but nonetheless, I love it. Admittedly the fact that it's within 3 miles of my house is nice, but even without that, I would make the drive out to play it if I wanted to work on my game in peace.

Like I said above, the mix of challenges is really conducive to working on most aspects of the game.

Also the park staff really takes care of it.They've recently repainted the baskets, and after the recent crappy weather, they hit all of the tee pads with an edger and swept away all of the accumulated clay and dirt.

All in all a good course. Thanks to Mint Hill for providing it.

Fun course if you throw short drives like me. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 29, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

VERY easy to get to. Just hop right off of 485 and you're almost at the first tee.

Nicely-defined fairways and tree clusters. It's like a shrunken ball-golf course.

Good signage.

Seems like a safe park.

Cons:

Don't bother if you want 18 holes, or want to throw massive drives at every tee pad.

While the grassy, planned fairways are pleasant and a nice contrast to the nearby Squirrel Lake course, part of me feels guilty because of the possible environmental impact of keeping up such a "lawn".

There might be one or two holes(maybe just one) where you'll have to keep a lookout for people on a nearby walking trail. It's never been a problem for me.

Other Thoughts:

I personally love this course because I can't throw the big drives anyway. A great place for kids, beginners, average players, mildy-injured players, "just for fun" players, and aging players who can't throw as hard as they used to.

Most beginner friendly Charlotte course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 23, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

1) Concrete tees are always a plus. The second tees on 1, 7, and 9 are also concrete and nicely sized. They are also rough for a good grip on your drive.

2) Disc Golf sign at the parking lot to help direct you to the course from the parking lot. It not only helps people looking for the disc golf course but it also makes the public aware of the sport as well as non dg'ers that there is a course out there. they might just think people are out there throwing "frisbees" around. It gives some credibility to the sport.

3) Nice signage. I have seen these signs before on different courses and I like them. They have big lettering and numbering, clear differences between tees, and all the necessary info along with a diagram of the holes. All ina ll some of the better signage I have seen. Functional but not decorative, which is fine in my book.

4) Very nice park. It is not a Mecklenberg county park, but it does a good job to represent the area it is in. There are multiple activities there including a walking track, walking trails, disc golf, baseball, an open field for all sorts of activities, and a playground for kids. All in all another great park for the Charlotte area.

5) This is the only full size course in the metro Charlotte area with fairly open fairways. There are avenues to hit and some woods on the course but the fairways are more forgiving.

6) Obviously the most beginner friendly course that truly represents the game. Cameron Yards can be an equivalent, but I think it doesn't truly show what courses can be. This one is a full fledged DG course and can be enjoyed by so many people, especially beginners.

7) I think there is more potential here for more holes. I might be a really short 18 hole course if it were to expand but there are so many lanes in through these trees that could be more holes. Perhaps a multiple tee course to make 18 holes would be more appropriate here. They could make 18 holes with only 9 baskets pretty easily.

8) Nice variety of shot shaping available on this course. There are hyzers, anhyzers, straight shots, s curve holes, and multiple option holes available on this course. I think this variety makes this course as good as it can be.

9) Moderate hills make this course as good as it can be. Sure it doesn't have as much challenge due to elevation on this course, but the hills are rolling and do force some different shots.

10) Good turf, probably the best turf on Charlotte courses. Sure most of the Charlotte course are densely wooded, but some of them do have turf in areas. This is well maintained and is nice to have a course that isn't all compacted soil.

11) This course does do a good job of using the limited space. It fits 9 holes into a pretty tight area of the park, also an arra that wouldnt be usable by any other sport without major excavation or soil work.

12) Natural flow of the course is pretty good except for the fact that there look to be lanes to throw down all over the place.

Cons:

1) The wooded spots on the course are not in the fairways, but if you go errant and get a kick into the wooded areas you wil struggle to get out cleanly. They are dense and they are evergreen so there will always be something in your way to try and advance the disc up the fairways.

2) Directional signage would be helpful in a few spots for beginners or first timers. The reason I say this would be helpful is because there are all sorts of avenues that could look like holes. There are basically pockets of trees that these holes wind through and around and you may struggle for a few seconds to find the appropriate spot for the next tee.

3) You might think that this course is forgiving, but if you are errant or you hit the wrong tree, you will be punished if you are in those dense cedar tree wooded area. I was surprised on a few occassions where I had no way to advance my disc when I was 10' off the fairways. Sure the fairways are wider and more forgiving, but once you leave the fairway they are punishing . . . almost too punishing for what I consider to be the most beginner friendly course in Charlotte.

4) Doesn't really challenge the above average player.

5) The long tees are only on 3 holes, so even if you play the long tees, you are still playing a beginner course.

6) Course has almost no variety because it plays mostly open with tight woods on either side of the forgiving fairways. Sure it has some elevation, but it would still be nice to see some more variety like maybe a hole in the dense woods, or a water shot included somehow. It is very monotonous.

7) Duece or die for advanced players. I think this is a negative because I like more variety.

8) Walkpath comes into play along a couple holes. Not as bad as many courses I have seen but still mentionable. It never crosses a path only errant shots would hit the path, but again, still worth mentioning.

9) Baskets are a little old with some rust on some of them. They still catch just fine but the aesthetics of the baskets are starting to decline.

Other Thoughts:

Not a bad course and definitely a course needed in the Charlotte area. It serves its purpose by providing a course without dense woods on every shot. It isnt as forgiving as you might think because once you get off the fairways you might as well be in the dense woods because you are not advancing the disc at all! I did have a good time playing here despite having a good round at Reedy beforehand, but this simply is only an average to slightly above average course. The beginner can enjoy it and the advanced or pro player can shoots for aces and birdies on every hole. Like I said it is an important course for Charlotte as it gives an outlet for many people to play a different type of course. This course gets a three becuase it serves a purpose no other course in the Charlotte area offer. It caters to beginners. If it was surrounded by average course it would get a 2.5 from me, but because it is the most accepting of beginners it gets a 3 from me, even though I no longer consider myself a beginner.

Mmmmm, Minty!

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jan 5, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This is definitely a hidden secret amongst all the Charlotte courses. While you have all the big, tough courses in the area, this is the little engine that could. Nothing flashy about it, but always solid. This course has a traditional golf course layout with distinct fairways, thick rough and good variation. The more open holes, especially #1 & #9 have a distinct links-type course feel to them where you have to keep shots low and out of the wind.
- Good hole layouts and great use of land. With limited space, this course does a great job using elevation, as well as natural fairways.
- Elevation plays a big factor on holes #2 - 7. For example, on #3 - 259 foot downhill hole - I've thrown a Roc 50 feet past the hole with little effort, but on #4 - 204 foot uphill hole, I've had to throw an Eagle just to get to the basket. Granted, there are other factors in play - i.e. the thick trees on #4s fairway - but still, #3 plays a lot shorter than #4.
- Great risk/reward. Every hole is a birdie opportunity (assuming you play #7 as a par 4). But with thick, tree-lined fairways and/or windy conditions, every hole is also a bogey chance. Trees are thick, but fair, on most holes to the point of throwing short distance just to get back on to fairway, instead of advancing towards basket. Accuracy is of greater importance than distance on this course.
- Great course to introduce new people to the game. As mentioned above, this course isn't going to overwhelm people with difficulty, so there shouldn't be too much of a frustration/intimidation factor for newbies. Shorter holes will also appeal to the non-big throwers.
- Course is easy to navigate. There's a natural flow, and short walk, from one basket to the next tee. The only semi-long walk is from #1's basket to #2, and that has a sign. First-timers will have no problem navigating the course. With the way the course is set out, you can even jump holes easily, so if you only want to play the open/drivable holes, you can keep going back and forth from #1 to #9 without having to walk any further.

Cons:

The woods are thick, fair, but thick. If you land in the woods, be prepared to possibly spend some time searching for your disc. The only way you're really in trouble searching for a disc is if you land in an evergreen. They suck discs in, and rarely drop them to the ground, so make sure you look up when searching. The evergreens (naturally) remain full year around, so don't expect any relief in the winter.
- The fence that runs alongside #7 & #9 stinks. There's no opening in it until near the basket for #9. So if you throw a shot over the fence, especially on #7, you every can try to jump the barbwire or have a long walk up and back to retrieve a disc. It's an added problem on #7 because the fairway is narrow. At least on #9, there's a split fairway, so you can throw the side away from the fence.
- There always seems to be a crosswind on the fairways for #1 & 9, which comes from an open field next to the park. It's a right-to-left wind on #1 and left-to-right on #9. Of all the times I've played the course (at least 20+ times), I'd say there's been some crosswind at least 3/4 of the time. It's not always strong, but it can be enough that you need to adjust your shots accordingly.
- Other than that, just small, petty stuff. The baskets aren't perfect, a couple are slightly bent. It's not a major issue. Some people may have a problem with the trees on every hole. There isn't a huge variety in the holes, in that there is only 1 dog leg. The others are relatively straight with some variation based on the baskets.

Other Thoughts:

This is the best 9-hole course in the area, and the best one I've played so far. For only 9 holes, the course has plenty of personality. Holes #1 & 9 are good to practice driving; #2 is a great ace hole; #4 is always an interesting decision to throw through or over the trees.
- As with all 9-hole courses, you can play through in no time, and should be able to play through twice (for a full 18) in less than an hour. The course never gets backed up with players, but always has people playing. Even on a cold, blustery weekday afternoon, I saw 4 other groups playing the course.
- It's a great park with plenty of ammenties - ballfields, picnic area, playground, restrooms, walking trails, water fountain and drink machines. Good for th entire family.
- The course is set as a 9-holer, so don't expect expansion. That said, I've always wondered if it were 18, how it would compare to Reedy Creek.
- It is less to either Reedy or Scrapyard, so you can play both courses in an afternoon.
- Mint Hill has a distinct feel to it. You're not getting this feel anywhere else. Worth a round or two if you've never played before.

Great course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 26, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-Great course for an easy playing experience with fair basket placement and smooth transition form hole to hole.
-Never overcrowded, although its never completely empty either.
-very open fairways for the most part, and overall a very fun course to play.

Cons:

-I've played here hundreds of times and every once and a while when i come the grass will be in pretty bad shape around a couple of holes (poorly cut), but its really not that big of a deal, just an observation.

Other Thoughts:

I recommend this course to anyone who is in the area.

Drove a good ways and had fun 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 2, 2009 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Nice variety, play longs for the back nine on a beautiful Carolina fall day.I was bored in the city and this cured me.I still believe in playing as many courses as you can, and if you live in Charlotte you should take some time to play the courses that are not big project works.Worse thing that can happen is fresh air and throwing things. If you ace every hole I will retract my statement.

Cons:

When you throw into the rough, it is thick, but passable My friend lost a firebird in the top of a pine tree, but that was odd not a real con..Found or way around fine.Short course but fun.

Other Thoughts:

Get on down to Mint Hill if you are foundered on mega courses, bring a handful of discs and play like the old days.
