Wonderful Camp 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 25, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

Scioto Hills Camp is a Christian Camp in Wheelersburg . Make sure you have prior permission to drive onto the camp grounds because you will be asked by several staff members what you are doing here . Drive all the way up the hill and turn right as you approach the lake and park up at the main office and check in first . The staff here are both courteous and friendly . They have maps of this 9 holer in there, so if you forgot to print one out , they will hand you one . The grounds are well mowed and kept . The baskets are your basic one , with numbers on all of them . One small mention . There is some nice stone masonry around the pole to each basket , which was a nice touch . The tees are grass with white 2 ft tall numbered posts for you to throw between . There is no other signage here . The course plays very short and fast . Port O lets are located left of the fairway on #5 . The course starts about where you turned your car right before the lake and next to the lake building . You throw over the road onto the hill next to an office with some bristly smaller trees blocking the basket . You then walk around the office to hole 2 , which is a right to left short bender around a set of 2 per civil war era looking cabins . I threw way wide of the cabins which basically canceled my chance at a 2 , but at least I didn't chip the cabin ( please don't hit it ) #3 is down the hill and throws into a sort of back yard to another office/house , with a tree immediately behind it . #4 is a downhill drive around yet another house ( YIKES !!! ) right to left . I would discourage throwing over the house as it is a blind hole and you might catch a kid or a parent or staffer that walked out in the yard. If you immediately walk down the rock steps to your right , you will see #5 tee which sits on a small hillside and throws out to an open fairway to a basket . overthrow the basket and you will land in some terrible rough . #6 is a drive that takes you past the mailboxes to the basket near an entrance . #7 is a drive with a side of a hill on your immediate right on your fairway with an animal pen flanking the left fairway ( OB ) , and a tree that comes into play near the basket . You don't want to throw into the pen because the gate is locked and you will have to climb the fence to get it out of the weeds in there . Go up the hill to your right and you throw down to the basket which has orchard looking trees blocking the fairway . #9 is up the hill to your immediate left . It is a straightaway drive with some rough on either side of the fairway and a canopy of trees overhead . The parking lot is down the steps and across the street . This course plays in 30 minutes or less for a solo player and can be easily followed once you get your bearings straight . I am guessing that this course is mainly for the campers here , giving them yet another camp activity to pursue . No signature holes , but a fun course nonetheless . An okay amount of elevation is here .

Cons:

#1 Private , but certainly understandable . The course is off limits during camping season and is by appointment only . Call ahead or email them first for permission and be nice . This course was intended for the campers to begin with . #2 It is kind of tense throwing so close to offices and houses for the first 4 holes , especially #2 with those old cabins to the left .

Other Thoughts:

This was a nice course and made me with that they had disc golf around when I was these Kids' age . I had a chance to tour the grounds and was impressed with how many activities were here and how great the grounds looked . Camps like these are very underrated , giving kids ( and adults ) structure and team building in a whole and religious setting . The course is fine , an introductory to disc golf for youngsters , some travelers , and am betting that a few of the counselors may trow a round or 2 during their free time . My recommendation : Unless a course bagger that happens to be in the area , or a nearby newbie that knows a staff member , you might not drive out of your way on this one . It sets pretty far off the beaten path ( literally . I drove through a mile or 2 of gravel road ) . THANK YOU , SCIOTO HILLS CAMP FOR ALLOWING ME TO PLAY YOUR COURSE . If I lived close to here , I would have taken my child to this camp .

Better than anticipated 2+ years

Pros:

This small 9 holer is treks the player through the base area of a very nice Christian camp in southern Ohio. This place has everything for a kid (of the Christian following). I brought my nephew and spoke to the very kind and friendly staff at the office desk. They were willing to let us play a quick round thankfully.

Without going into full detail, the first 4 holes play a little closer to the camp buildings than I enjoy being. Following that, I think the last 5 holes are all great!

This course plays great for the kids that it is meant for. Playing all of the holes are par 3s is actually fun for an intermediate player as well.

The terrain is moderately hilly, but an easy hike.

Again, the design was great holes 5 through 9 even for intermediates. The first 4 holes make me think that somebody is going to eventually get hit.

Baskets are a mishmash. Some are deep dish... some are shallow. Not a big deal. Nice stones around the base of each basket.

Cons:

Major cons are basically holes 1 through 4.

I wish that this was a little bit more public, because it would help disc golf in the area. However, I totally understand it being private during summer months when the camp is very busy.

Seems to be single placements for pins. Would be nice to have a couple different options to mix it up.

Natural pads- not a big deal for me... but can be for others.

No next tee signs makes some navigation difficulties.

Other Thoughts:

Design- 2.5
Baskets- 2.5
Terrain- 4
Navigation- 1
Beauty- 3
Teepads- 2

15/6 = 2.5

I think this is worth playing if you just need to bag a course... and maybe you are picking your kid up from camp. Thank you to the staff for getting this course in the ground. Would love to have a kids tournament here in the future!

Surprisingly Enjoyable 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 6, 2015 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This remote, private course boasts tremendous use of the available elevation to craft nine fun lines of flight for the casual to Recreational disc golfer (bigger arms won't have too much chance to air 'em out). Though natural grass, tees are well-marked with twin, white, 24" posts with very simple hole number signage, and baskets are 18 chain DGA,s in good shape, but ranging from shallow with high nubs to the next generation, deeper cages.

Showing a slight preference for right-to-left lines, the course bends around log cabins and buildings, as well as tree groves and horse pastures, with distances ranging from 155 to over 300 feet, and is definitely enjoyable in its degree of challenge for the intended audience. The first hole starts just behind the main building beside the lake and crosses the driveway back over that ravine to the back of the main office, but is guarded by the pair of trees to make it more than an ace run. Hole 2 sweeps around the log cabins and past the corner tree (you don't want to run long down the hill right). Hole 3 turns around and goes up slope into the pines, before the dastardly hilltop, pine-traversing sweeper 4th. Hole 5 is a touch downhiller with rough beyond the basket, and 6 angles across the driveway, as perhaps the longest hole on the course. 7 has (up) hillside all along the right and horse pasture (fenced) on the left, with a lightly tree-surrounded green. Hole 8 is level, but well-guarded, giving you a chance to really shape your line to the pin. Hole nine plays at the top of the ridge before you get a chance to go back and play it all again.

The folks who run the camp are friendly and enthusiastic about their course, and don't seem to mind the occasional visitor, provided you check with them first. Obviously, as a Christian youth camp, the facilities are intended for camp patrons, first and foremost.

Cons:

You'll need to contact the camp folks in order to play, and that might not be an 'instant' agenda item. The number on the course description page (740-778-3279) was not in service the first week of September, 2015. You might be able to email the camp itself, but don't expect an instant response for short term road trip planning.

The roads into the area are a bit rough, then turn to gravel roads, so take it easy the last few miles in.

The course itself has only grassy areas between tee signs for your tee shots, and is extremely steep in areas. Though they've put in a couple of steps on 5, you'll want to watch your footing when wet. Also, there are some places with awkward transitions: go uphill to the left of the top of the steps to get to hole 4, turn left up the first path after hole 8, and then come back across the top of the pond dam to return to the beginning after 9.

The three holes with some difficulty are clear: hole 4 plays right over a building (most direct line), tempting folks not to shoot the difficult, intended flight path skip-hyzering in under the pine branches from the right. And when you approach the green, there might be folks enjoying the patio chairs there on the left. Hole 6 shoots over the 7th tee, so the course shouldn't be played as a 'packed' event. Finally, on 7, it's probably TOO easy to hyzer into the horse pasture, and the gate and fence might pose climbing / liability issues if you're not careful.

Other Thoughts:

The nice guy we chatted with at the camp mentioned their interest in putting in a back nine, but wasn't really sure where that might eventually go. Sounds like they've got plenty of land, and with the nice fun holes they already have, I'd love an invite to any grand re-opening they might host!

Blessed Day 2+ years

Pros:

This course is laid out on gentle rolling steep hills in beautifull Southern Ohio.

Shouldn't get lost without a map, but just in case there are maps available in the main office.

A couple challenging holes.

# 5 is a bomber going over a plateau <steps leading one down the hill from the teeing area> the basket is in the flat of the hill, go past the basket and your in a mess of thick pine trees.

# 7 plays along a horse pen. Go into the pen and your OB, nice tight fairway will allow a RHBH hyzer to go for the hole. I also liked

# 8 as the basket was sitting pretty in a grove of trees on a slanted <downhill and to the right> tract of land

I was impressed that the Columbus, Ohio DG club donated a box of used dics to this camp <applause for this actions>

Cons:

Private course

California (dirt/grass) tees

Very generic tee (signs) as they are just 2 numbered posts in the ground.

# 4, needs adjusted as I hear that some players are just thomahawking their shot over the cottage that the fairway is adjacent to. I can understand why as the fairway is almost closed from the pine tree branches.

Not all 18 baskets are set up.

Other Thoughts:

Private course, One HAS to call in advance to make arrangements to play, As one CA NOT just come and play. Try to talk with Jade or Steve. This is a Christian Youth Camp and they also have groups of other parrishioners staying at this multi purpose facility (swimming/ fishing lake, putt putt golf, dining facilities) in the beautifull rolling hills of southern Ohio.

Being a Christian Youth Camp, I don't think I need to say this. But, NO Alcohol or Drugs is permitted on property!!

It was raining (heavily at times) all the way to this facility from the Columbus area <where I started my day>. But when I got here, it stopped raining and even the sun peaked out a little while :)
