Underrated 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 11, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course though it has its issues is well designed course with variety of shots and challenging many areas of your game. Nice concrete tee pads, with ok baskets. They are the old Mach baskets but they are in good condition, and they are not bent or rusting at all. This is definitely a course for intermediate to advance players. Though the tee signs are small they are accurate on the distance.

Cons:

My biggest issues with this course is I can NOT be played after it rains. After it rains the entire course becomes this thick mud that just sticks to everything and by the third hole you have 10 pounds on your shoes. The next issue here goes right along with it, the drainage here is aweful and when it floods the course is covered in gardage everywhere. The last issue is the course/park is beside a elementary school, the kids play at the park and can be in the way on 1,3,15, and 16. Also the kids sometimes break and tear down the signs.

Other Thoughts:

On the back side of the course they are doing construction so on 12 and 13 you have to be careful you don't land in the construction site. Also on 17 they removed the tee pad.

Not just a warm-up for the course in Rockwall... 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 23, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

-lots of good holes here, not repetitive; no boring golf here, in my opinion
-lots of technical shots, some of which require good distance
-tee signs/maps, concrete tees, good baskets
-decent park/course interaction, with low likelihood of hitting other park users and with much of the course straying far from the park center

Cons:

-navigation on the course was tricky between a couple holes; we never found 17's tee (probably because it was a longer hole than we would have believed) and wasted a few minutes finding some others - the map on here does help though
-the creek is small but will surprise you by grabbing a couple discs; the rough can be quite rough (I felt lucky not to lose any discs)

Other Thoughts:

After a couple days at Trey Ranch and Selah, The Cedars was on our way back into Dallas and an easy stop before playing Harry Myers. I didn't expect much of a disc golf experience, just a bit of a warmup before HM. In retrospect, the ~53 SSE should have tipped me off. It ended up being a very enjoyable but challenging round of golf.

I liked the design overall. The first couple holes used the cedars well with relatively short holes but good lines. Later, the trees and terrain changed a bit, and the course uses a creek as well. There were some nice technical and shorter wooded shots (6 was especially memorable, in the middle of a nice stretch of tight holes) as well as some longer shots that also used the woods (e.g. 4, 10, 12). It was a good test of my all-around game, and I would play regularly if I lived in the area. The strength of the course is in the hole variety and the challenge.

Rating: I'm going with 3.5, though I considered 4.0 simply to help boost the average a bit. As others have mentioned, this course is underrated and a good play. It's better than what I thought of when I heard "small city park course." Very nice course, even if it can't help being overshadowed by Harry Myers. Thanks Fate!

better than advertised 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 16, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

Tee signs with maps and distances.

Cement tee boxes (although they were short)

Wide variety of holes with short technical and long boomer holes.

Most of the holes had direction markers for the next hole.

Cons:

DON'T THROW INTO THE ROUGH, rough is an understatement. There are a lot of briers in the rough.

there is some longer walks between some of the holes.

18 ends way to far away from the parking lot.

Baskets are not numbered

Other Thoughts:

The flow of this course was great at first, but it is like they got tired and flat out gave up by the end of the 18 holes.

In general, this is a good course that could have been tweaked a little to make it even better.

You start off with a few short pitch and putt holes to warm up for a booming hole 3. Then the rest of the course is a good mix of open shots and good use of cedars and creek to make the course not so easy.

My problem really starts at hole 15. While this is a good hole, the basket is where 18's basket should have been. the last 4 holes on the course are good holes, just too much walking to get to each tee. (and I got my feet muddy due to no bridge of any sort to get to 17's tee box)

Good Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 1, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course has been getting more attention, and Straight Line Discs brings in a tournament a few times a year, the course gets some play time as well as a trimming usually before each tournament. Once you play through once, you understand and know where the tees and baskets are. This is an awesome course to me because it's not open, and you pay for your mistakes (my guess why its rated lower now, since most people don't like courses they can't throw straight at a basket in the middle of a field with no OB and no trees or creeks). They just installed nice new bathrooms right by basket #1 as well, so they are working out there.

Cons:

Can get overgrown in the spring before it's cleaned up. Fate is a small town, so the park usually reflects that unfortunately.

I'll mention that the course doesn't dry well, but that's not much of a Con, that's more like...wait for it...nature.

Other Thoughts:

This course needs more love for locals. It has potential. If more TD's would put on more gigs out here it'd get that love. I enjoy playing a few rounds out there, especially when Myers is crowded.

Snakes: Yes...why there are snakes in a natural habitat here. Not a reason to rate a course lower because of nature...ever played Lewisville? Kingdom of Cottonmouths.

Almost really cool 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 18, 2018 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Good mix of holes
Compact
Good risk reward opportunity
Not crowded
Close to Meyers

Cons:

Signage is poor.
The creek could use some work
This could be forgivable if it had decent bridges
Difficult for beginners
Many places to lose plastic, a little trimming would go along way here
Mainly signage and bridges just general maintenance
It's almost like they got tired at the end of the build and didn't finish it.

Okay so All of the above is the same or mostly worse. The city obviously does not care about this course. The bridges over the creek they had have been washed out and never replaced. There needs to be some real bushwhacking done on this course to make some holes playable. As it sits part of the course is realistically unplayable. A real shame too because the layout and mix of holes is awesome. A real disappointment here with the Cedars. Bummer. It should be so much better.

Other Thoughts:

This course really has such potential but the listed cons kinda make it a beat down. Can't compete with Harry Meyers down the street and that's why it's not crowded. Some reviews mention that play would help to break the course in. I agree. It ain't gonna happen in a meaningful way until some changes are made. I live close so I had to check it out for myself. If you have to travel far.....don't. That being said there are other courses that are worse. Meyers is hands down the best in the area. Yeah I still agree with what I said here. Except now that it has been several years and nothing has improved and things have actually gotten worse since my initial review oct 2015 I gotta say unless you can't make it to Harry Meyers avoid this beat down like the plague until some real improvements take place. I wrote the city to tell them about the issues but I'm guessing the apathy will continue. So unfortunate. As a result of the lack of upkeep I'm lowering my review score.

Very technical course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 19, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course is an interesting departure from the norm. The juniper trees make for a pleasing, yet difficult course. And who doesn't like the smell of Christmas when playing? But in all seriousness, this is a very technical course with many blind shots, so losing a disc is quite possible. Many shots will be needed to complete this 18 hole bad boy. Long, medium, and short distances are all accounted for. Concrete teepads with great signage, perfect baskets, and a fantastic course flow as well. It is an excellent course made by one of the best course designers around. As an added bonus, it is less than 5 minutes away from another awesome course...Harry Myers.

Cons:

It can get muddy when there are heavy rains, of course, this is true of most all courses. The cedar trees will claim discs. You should really consider using a spotter when playing, and breaking out your brightest discs. My number one complaint about this course is that I have seen moccasins there. I'm not talking about dark-colored water snakes either. I know the difference, and these are the real deal. You really need to be careful when around water here, and extra cautious if your disc goes in. A $10 piece of plastic just isn't worth it. While I know poisonous snakes are likely at many parks, I have seen very, very few of them for the amount of courses I have played and as many rounds as I have clocked. I have seen these out at the cedars multiple times, however.

Other Thoughts:

Sweet course to go to. I definitely suggest trying it out. Getting a two-fer at the cedars and Harry myers park in rockwall is one of the best 1-2 punches for DG courses in north texas for those looking for a nice day of disc golf.

I got my first ace here as well!!

Tight 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 1, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

Cement tees and decent signage. Wooden signs pointing to next tee was a nice guide. Disc catchers are in good shape. Couple of really nice signature shots.

Cons:

There are simply times that this course will trigger claustrophobia. Technical shots required... repeatedly. Dry conditions yield a hard pan surface that is simply difficult to stop a well placed shot: great shots often rewarded with a difficult out from beneath the cedars (or worse). Wet conditions will yield a trudge through the black clay gumbo of North Texas. Difficult to navigate across the creek on the back 9.

Other Thoughts:

Course could still use some opening up. Grass would be a nice touch on most of the course and bridging the back side of the creek would be helpful.

This course is not for those needing assistance with bag carts, families using strollers or other wheeled accessories. Difficult terrain and tight paths from catchers to tee boxes.

Needs some fine tuning 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 19, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

Lots of variety and good use of obstacles in the area. New tee boxes and signs. Peaceful rural area. Near Harry Myers so playing 18 on each is available.

(Update: They have cleaned up the stumps, barbed wire, and poison ivy since I first played)

Cons:

Lots of cedar trees can really slow play when retrieving or searching for an errant throw. Bringing something to extend your reach for discs under or in trees might help.

If you play this course too soon after a rain or with early morning dew on the ground your shoes with get very heavy.

As previously stated, Hole 3 at 565 ft seems a bit long for a par 3 for an average player like me especially with that wind. lol

Hole 7 could use a few less skinny trees blocking the basket so your tee shot doesn't feel like pure luck should you actually make it through.

Long trek through the trees between 12 & 13.

Need bridges for 14 & 17.

An earlier rest bench besides the much needed one on 15 would help.

Other Thoughts:

I'm a mainly RHFH player so some of the holes forced me to go to a backhand throw which I sorely need work on.

Hole 2 seemed a boring over-the-top throw until I played it a second time with a skip shot and just missed an ace.

Hole 4 is very unique in that it curls around to the left into a grove of trees. Both times my playing partners have tried going over the trees they have paid for it.

Hole 9 was unique and again forced me to go backhand through the tight tunnel.

Hole 12 had a nice finish that was unique. After a long throw over the creek into an open field I went over the trees and into the grove area where the basket was located.

This course allows you to be creative on many holes. I would suggest experimenting with different throwing styles and lanes. Once the cedars grow taller I believe this course and it's lanes will play better.

good with potential to be better 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 7, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

-lots of challenging holes in the thick cedars
-nice concrete pads, baskets, signs
-next tee signs everywhere, easy navigation
-good mix of distances, starts shorter and gets longer toward the back
-not busy, plenty of parking, benches

Cons:

-rough is very rough, course is still new
-needs bridges to cross the creek
-i don't think the fairways are unfairly tight but some trimming here and there will makes things more pleasant
-multiple pin locations would go a long way here, it would add variety and replay value and has the potential to drastically change your look on the holes in the woods

Other Thoughts:

I think this course has suffered so far from both reviewers who think that difficult equals good or reviewers who think that too many trees are bad. I found it to be a challenging yet fun course that just needs to be broken in a bit.

There are a good variety of distances and fairway sizes among the holes. The course generally starts shorter and tighter and gradually gets a bit longer and more open as it progresses. Navigation is easy with the next tee signs between each hole and the baskets and concrete tees are great.

I think this course will be in much better shape once it gets played in more. There are still many stumps, the fairways are not all clear yet, the rough is really thick, the paths between holes are well marked but could still be more obvious in places (like between 12 and 13), and hopefully things will get moved around a bit too. I'd love to see multiple pin locations and some holes that I'd just plain rather have the basket somewhere else. Hole 12 comes to mind; I think a shorter pin would be better for a par 3 or make it a par 4 and put the basket even further back to the right. Hole 13 could have pin locations tucked to the right or the left. Hole 17 has a great looking tee shot with the basket behind a cool tree. There are several fun ace runs, especially 14 and 18.

This is a good course that will get better with time. Definitely worth stopping to play here if you are on your way to Harry Myers. Makes a great compliment to that course and is only about 10 mins away.

Cons:

Too many obstacles within throwing lanes. Some holes have no throwing lanes

Other Thoughts:

This course could have some potential but there needs to be a lot of work. Some of the holes are so cluttered that there are no throwing lanes. I enjoy playing a tight challenging course, but there are limits. There needs to be better locations to cross the creek. I will return much later after hopefully a lot of work has been done to the course. This course has potential to have 4 or 5 signature holes. But as it is now it is a waste of time.

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 12, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

There are several things that make this course a a great course to play and learn on:
tight shots
Multiple lanes to the basket on each hole
good changes in shot distance
knwledge of disc golf strategy
great scenery
Close to Harry Meyers

Cons:

Little rough still as it is still being beat in as more people play it.
can get muddy after rain
Poison Ivy/oak

Other Thoughts:

Overall I think this is a great course and a great place to work on your accuracy. This course is great because it was made to help with your disc golf strategy and thought process rather than pure brute force grip it and rip style play.
There are a couple holes that you can really let loose on and watch the disc fly, but the rest really show you what type of accuracy you have when it comes down to it. there are several lanes to the basket on each hole if you look so you can come out and work on different shots each time you play.
Since it is a new course, the wilderness is still pretty overgrown and if you go off the fairways it can be pretty hard to find your disc and play from, especially on some holes like 6,10, 12, 13, and 14.
each time i have played this course i leave feeling like a could've done better and wanting to start again and that is exactly the kind of course i like because it makes you want to improve.
Overall i would say that this is a great course to work on your accuracy. it might not be the best for beginners but there are lines to the basket on each hole carved out for you if you want to come try it out.
This course is a great compliment to Harry Meyers (long, open, hyzer bomb city) and i would love to see some tournaments played with these two courses combined. My hat is off to LifeDisc Sports and the town of Fate for giving the avid disc golfer another good course in the area.
Everyone should come take a look at the course and have some fun!

Pros:

The course was in pretty good shape and the baskets and tees are brand new.
I liked the technical nature of the course and the folks who put it in (thanks Josh!) did a great job of fitting it in to a fairly tight space.

Cons:

While it was my first time playing it, there is definitely some work that needed to be done to make the course more playable. There were places where the basket was not easy to determine from the tee diagram, especially as many of the tee shots were blind.
Also, hole 6 has a path which goes over barbed wire.

Even though I may be a newb, I don't think that a 560+ yard hole should be a par 3.

Another Gem in DFW 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 24, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

Since some of the previous reviews were negative, let me approach this review by stating my current abilities so one can hopefully, get a true perspective. I am a 912 rated, RHBH player capable of shooting an occasional high 900 round. I have a weak forehand, but can shape most shots. My average driving length is 350 to 375. Therefore, when I drove up to the parking lot and saw the height of the cedar trees, I wanted to hate the course before even teeing off, thinking most throws would be up and over the trees. Man, was I wrong. The designer(s) did an outstanding job of carving out some of the holes, as evidenced by the trimming of tree limbs throughout some of the fairways and around some of the baskets. Navigation between holes was easy enough with the addition of 'next tee' signs in place. The walking path from 12 to 13 took a lot of hard work, and is much appreciated. Similar to a Houck design, some holes/shots require hitting a landing area instead of just trying to park your tee shot. Overall, the course provides a very high fun factor with some tight, technical shots, as well as a few bombers that require accuracy, not just the ability to throw for distance.

Cons:

Not really any 'Cons'. Yeah, the rough is rough, but the idea is to stay on the fairway, right? A few more benches would be nice. The bench added on #15 provided some welcomed relief. The directions to the course could be tweaked. I had a difficult time finding the course.

Other Thoughts:

Different strokes for different folks. If you're not a fan of this course, you probably prefer, open, less technical courses. A low rating because the course is not 'beat in' is kind of weak. Another 'must play' course has been added to the DFW disc golf community.

Let it Grow On You 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 1, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

I really enjoy the technicality of this course. It does have a number of shorter holes which definitely test every shot, but they are still not easy birds which I think is good on a course like this. At the same time I really think this course evens itself out nicely as far as hole distances and shot selection. Although there are none over 600, there is a 595 and a 490 ft hole on this course along with a number of 325 to 390 ft shots ranging from hyzer, to anhyzer to straight. Once again, there are not many easy bird opportunities but there are 3 or 4 that you should definitely get which I think every course should have. At the same time there are as many as 9 or 10 that with a great shot could definately be birds. I think this course has a great variety of shots and will test every aspect of your game.

Cons:

The cons of any new course is the fact that it needs to be beat in. This course has poison ivy, and if you get off the fairway it may be hard to find your disc. But hopefully these things will work themselves out over time. Some of the signs are a little misleading as far as basket locations which can be a pain because there are a number of blind shots, and there are some footages that are a little off as well.

Other Thoughts:

All in all I think this course has a ton of potential. Once it gets played for a good year or two and lines get worn in and the course has had time to develop, this course will be a great addition to DFW.

Accuracy required 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 12, 2013 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This is a well designed technical course that will require you to use a lot of shots and your wits. It's not another common "step up and throw on a wide open fairway to a clearly defined putting area" course. On most of the holes, there are multiple lines to choose from and none of them are easy. It's a test of skill on your ability to control your disc and choose your lines. There are open drives on some holes, but the approaches are usually technical.

Cons:

Cedar trees are great obstacles, but they make finding errant throws very difficult. They block the wind really well, which would be a pro in the winter, but it's hot dead air in the summer.

Other Thoughts:

I really like technical courses so I rated this course highly. It's not for everyone. Newer players will be very frustrated and experienced players that are having a bad round may not find this course enjoyable. I know a lot of players would like more clearing to take place, but I like it very technical "as is". There are plenty of courses with wide open fairways, let's hope this one stays different from the rest.

Throw Smarter Not Harder 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 17, 2013 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

The Mix: There is a good mix of Left Hand and Right Hand holes. A even mix of short and long holes. A good mix of open and narrow holes. The shorter holes tend to challenge you to hit narrow windows and control your disc, while the longer holes to really air it out.

Game Challenge: This course requires you to come prepared with multiple discs and multiple throws. It give different looks at different types of holes.

Favorite Holes: I personally like the shorter challenging holes. So 2, 5, 7, and 14 are great. I'm not as fond as the longer holes like 8 and 12, the first time I played I had to walk the hole first because the basket was hidden behind trees. By far one of the coolest holes is 17 with an awesome look out at a big ol tree. A reward for wrapping up a good round.

The Scenery- This is a wooded course causing you to navigate a lot of cedars (obviously) a small creek (not a disc eater threat) and some pretty tall brush. Some holes (like 9) they literally cut straight through a patch of trees to create a 15 foot wide gap.

The Park- They somehow managed to wedge an awesome 18 holes into a this area. They made very efficient use of space without awkward overlapping and cross overs. It also doesn't give too much overlap with the walking path it revolves around. Very well laid out. The only part I didn't like is the walk from 12 to 13.

Cons:

Bridges: The bridges are really the only thing that bugged me. They were not secured properly and felt like they were placed in a rush. The city needs to get out there and fix these.

Tee Pads: At the moment (June 2012) not all tee pads are filled. This doesn't bug me because half of the local course don't have 100% cement tees either. All tees are identified even if not cemented.

Other Thoughts:

I've played this a few times and the first time I was pretty frustrated. Don't write the course off after the first run. After I figured out how the course flowed it made everything much easier and has challenged me to throw smarter. It forces you to choose your discs wisely and make good throws.

Unfortunately...Not Impressed 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 22, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

The property as well as the layout of the property is a great place for a great course to be built. Has a lot of potential to be another great course in the Rockwall area in addition to Harry Myers DGC. Holes 1, 7, 15, 17 were fun to play...hole 17 was awesome in my opinion! Baskets are great quality and the tee pads that had actually been poured were very nicely done.

Cons:

Only 3 of the holes on the course were fun to play. Many of the holes could be made better by changing the location of the basket. Most holes seemed as if the location of the basket was forced when there seemed to be much better options for basket locations throughout the course. I felt that a few of the holes had really good potential but the basket placement completely took away from them being a challenging and rewarding hole at the same time. (e.g. Hole # 9) Also, there were about 5/6 of the holes that were missing the tee pads when I played, but I'm sure this issue will be fixed very soon. Although the property is a great peace of land for a disc golf course I felt that it needed a lot of cleaning up as far as branches/brush that were present. The majority of the bridges were very poorly made and sketchy to cross on a few of them. The location of a few of the bridges could also be put in a more convenient spot. I also found it difficult to determine the location of the baskets on quite a few holes...looking at the signs on many of the tee pads actually made it harder to determine the basket location (very misleading). On some of the shorter holes (less than ~250 ft) you could easily see the basket but the odds of making it within 30 feet of the basket were VERY SLIM (kind of missing the point of a shorter hole). In other words, some of the holes did not have a clear line of site/shot to the basket.

Other Thoughts:

At first I was pumped to hear that we would be getting a new 18 hole course in the Rockwall area since Harry Myers DGC gets a lot of traffic sometimes. I have been playing disc golf for just about 6 years now and have played upwards of 30/40 courses and this course ranks at the bottom and that is why I gave such a low rating. This was a great opportunity for a great course to be built, but in my opinion I was very let down. I would tell others that want to play the course that they should not waste they're time since Harry Myers DGC is so close and is also heads and shoulders above The Cedars. Overall, this place could turn in to a much better course with some major reconstruction including basket placement, changing tee pad signs, and clearing out brush. I am interested to see how the course plays in a year or so...that is when I plan on giving it another chance. Hopefully time will help The Cedars become a better/enjoyable course to play.
