Old School Oak Grove Park Course Still A Popular Choice! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 26, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course in Oak Grove Park was established in 1979 making it one of the older courses in the state. It's typical of courses built in that era with its old school fiberglass signs, shorter distances and mostly straight or hyser throws. But in spite of its limitations and simplicity, Oak Grove remains popular and continues to gather positive reviews and better than average ratings. Why? Because, it's just a fun, easy throw. Oak Grove is a perfect little course for the causal recreational players. You can enjoy a round here and your biggest worry will be, did you shoot -2 or -4? You needn't worry about hunting or losing your disc in thick underbrush or throwing it in a lake, swamp or creek. You can show up in any footwear. The park's canopy of oaks keeps you dry on wet days and cool in warmer times.

The equipment is tired and old but perfectly adequate for the players here. The older Mach I's are fine with their big yellow numbers. The concrete tee pads likewise. The signs that are present are serviceable. At the start is a small kiosk with a laminated version of the course map. Navigation is nine-hole park course easy.

Cons:

The course has its issues but they are like Robert Redford's face, they're not ugly, they show character. The older baskets might not catch as well as they once did. Some signs are worn or missing. # 7 faces 2:00 and the basket is straight ahead at 12:00. The # 9 pad faces 12:00 and the basket is over about 9:30. The sign here also faces backwards. These are all minor problems and barely distract from the course's overall enjoyment factor.

I hear the course gets crowded with players or club events. I somewhat hate to list a course's popularity as a con. There were three other groups on the course and I did have to wait while they teed off on # 4.

Other Thoughts:

Oak Park is a fun round.

Nice niner- needs some love 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 21, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

Typical City Park course with not a lot of length, solid concrete tee pads, mature trees, adaquate signage, and easy to navigate.
All the concrete pads were numbered.... so the fact that the #3 sign was missing was not a problem.
Pads were good sized.
Course was definitely fun to play... couple of ace run possiblities and definite birdies to be had.
Lot of trees, but plenty of openings.

Cons:

Reconfiguration has some fairways crossing... specifically 5 and 6.
Course crams the holes into the limited space... possibility of hitting others is there.
Older baskets.... I didn't have issue, but I can see where other reviewers found them challenging for longer throws.
Tee for 9 faces straight down the line, while the basket is at about 10 o'clock in relation to the tee.

Other Thoughts:

If you've read any of my other 50+ reviews, it's all about the fun factor that determines my ratings.
My 13 y/o daughter and I played while on break from her volleyball tourney, which is why we were in town...
We both loved it!! Nice walk.... managable throws.. easy to navigate.
Upgrade the sgnage and baskets and this moves to over a 3 easily!!

Needs help 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 28, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Small course with easy short holes. Enough trees to keep it fun but not enough to make it overly challenging

Cons:

Signs are there but little to no information is on them. Some tee pads point the wrong way after baskets were moved.
Baskets are old and not well maintained. Some posts have most of the dirt eroded away

Other Thoughts:

For being one of the oldest courses in the state, it needs some help to regain some of its past glory

Great little course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 24, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Love this course, I've played it many times and though it is only 9 holes, it is a lot of fun.
+Little to no risk of loosing a disc
+paved Tee pads
+easy to navigate
+flat terrain, few obstacles

Cons:

-ridiculous amount of foot traffic, the ozark flying disc club holds meetings at random so you never can plan on a time the course will be free
-yards butt right up to the course, so if you shank a disc, you might have to pop into someone's yard
-not every tee lines up with its basket, so some drives are awkward.

Older Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 30, 2015 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Good concrete tees.
Always short grass and maintained grounds.
Good course for putting and midrange work.
Can be played in thirty minutes if needed.

Cons:

Older baskets reject longer shots.
Crowded.
Trash litters fairways.
Drives can go into private property if not careful with the hyzer.

Other Thoughts:

Good course to play if you're in a hurry or just want to shoot a quick round. I'd like to see some updated baskets (I know DGM in SGF is working on that), but they like the original for character.

Pros:

A cute old coarse ( 1979) in a nice neighborhood concrete pads ( although some dont point the right direction)

Cons:

signage and tee pads could be updated, a little crowded , surrounded by houses

Other Thoughts:

I like this coarse, it has history, people have been tossing plastic here since " steady Ed" laid this thing out 35 years ago.. Its short, you can play nine holes in 40 minutes,Its easy to go under par, you dont need drivers, its a good place to practice up on approach and putting...not the most challenging but a pretty good time ..

-All short holes
-Tee order not well marked

Other Thoughts:

Small course, looks very cramped at first but the wholes are set up to allow some good shots. None of the holes are very lengthy, but trees in the park make for some fun and interesting shots. There may be nicer courses around, but this one is fun and worth a play.

Pros:

Concrete tees. 9 holes. Optional pro holes marked with little square rock(however I haven't found all of them yet. Nice baskets. Lots of parking. Friendly people.

Cons:

Where to start. There might be a lot of cons, But this is still the most enjoyable course near MSU.
1.Lady that lives at the end of Hole5 had a lot of "stuff" in her yard and isn't willing to help you get your disc back.
2.Hole 2, I had the problem for a few years shanking my shots to the right and land in every yard. Most years on hold to are accessible, However there are a few stops where you will lose a disc FOREVER
3.Hole 7. I hate that hole. All years accessible except the Black spiky gate yard directly to the right of the tee( don't ask, terrible shot)
4. Crowded After 3pm
5. Crowded Until Sunset
6. Did i mention Crowded
7. Lots of dog walkers
8.Mostly shorter style holes

Other Thoughts:

everyone is friendly beside hole5 lady and a few people on hole 2 side. Not very challenging, but a fun course for everyone. My everyday course. I play closer to sunset time and drive an orange katana, feel free to join.

Some people don't know what Four means. (ie: lots of beginners)

Cons:

"B" Tees are not all marked. Some have stone markers, but others are just worn places.

Plays fast 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 12, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Ability to play very quickly. Great course to practice your mid range and putter shots off the tee box. Great course to learn on.

Cons:

Big groups that slow down the play. Some holes are close to tee boxes so you need to wait sometimes to throw. 2 holes criscross so if there are people playing one of the holes you will need to wait.

Other Thoughts:

I live very close to Oak Grove and rarely play this course due to the crowds. Sometime you will get lucky and be the only person out there. Mornings are a great time to play the course. There are back tees for each hole if you want to play 18. I like to play jungle golf a lot at this course to make it more interesting.

Fun and Short! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 20, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

1. Quick - You can literally finish in 20 minutes. I live north of town, so we play it 4 or 5 times in a row, or on the way home from playing something further south

2. Well designed, there are some pretty tough holes, all are short so it makes it easy to salvage a par after you nail a tree on the 1st shot.

3. Concrete pads are still in pretty good shape

4. The people in the houses surrounding are all super nice, and occasionally cheer for a good shot, which is always fun!

Cons:

1. Course is old, and short, it's fun for that reason, but some people might not find it challenging.

2. They have changed the course layout several times, so there are two tee boxes that face the wrong way, one is no big deal, but the other is ok.

3. The baskets suck balls(but that does make it more challenging) and it's normally pretty busy. There's always a couple idiots drinking or smoking weed, but it comes with the territory.

4. The signs aren't helpful at all, but you can still find your way.

Other Thoughts:

I love this course, it feels good to play if for no other reason than it forces you to really work on your approach shots. There are only three very long shots, the whole thing is quick, and fun.

Most boring course ever 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 14, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

The pros? Well you can fit 3 rounds in one hour. You can't loose your disc. The course does make good use of what its got area-wise.

Cons:

Very boring. Flat with a couple of trees equals no fun. Not challenging at all. I did play with a couple guys who knew the alternates which did make things a bit more challenging. Overall, I would never go out of my way again to play there. Also, the signs and baskets were worn and dated. The local gov't needs to update they're parks badly.

Nice for a quick round 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 2, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Great use of park space, all 9 holes (and extended 18) fit in this very compact course very nicely.

There is always a decent crowd (both in quantity and quality) so you can join up with friendly locals pretty easily.

EVERY hole is ace-able so there is a chance to get excited on every tee shot.

Good use of mature trees add some difficulty to a very short course.

Cons:

The course is incredibly short, and you wont be testing your whole bag here. A putter and a mid range will give you all the distance you could possibly need here.

The course floor is pretty worn down meaning your discs will skip for days! (could be a positive if your looking for those sorts of aces)

can get crowded enough that you have to wait on other groups pretty frequently (especially if you or another group is trying to play the back 9 which all go to a pin being occupied by the front 9)

Other Thoughts:

its a great place to go to practice approach after approach. You could get through this course in 30 min no problem, so its great practice for your pitch n' putt if your tight on time.

More fun than it looks on paper 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 7, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

1) Massive oak trees make this course what it is. They are sprawling, large, and their limbs can create a low ceiling to throw under.

2) Massive concrete tees add the the quality of this course because the sandy soil when wet could be slippery and soft when really wet.

3) Some might consider the hard fast greens with no turf to be a negative, but I kindof like it. It really makes you think twice about an ace run and about going for longer putts. You can easily get an additional 10-20' on a missed putt with no turf, and drives can easily skip as opposed to digging into the turf. I like it because all of the greens are pretty consitant.

4) Beginner friendly course because it is mostly open. I always appreciate a course that caters to all.

5) Garbage cans at the parking lot . . .I thoroughly enjoyed watching the squirrels climb down the trees and into the garbage cans looking for food.

6) This course can be played quickly. I played two discs simultaneously and finished in under 30 minutes.

Cons:

1) Turf is thin and compact from years of use. Supposedly one of the oldest courses in MO.

2) Some of the concrete tees are a little damaged and cracked.

3) DGA signs are old and some are worn off. Hole #7 sign is missing altogether.

4) 5 and 6 fairways cross and create a bottleneck in the corner of the park when they could easily not cross and still have 2 good holes back there.

5) Concrete sleeves around the baskets are rasied, will do damage, and can affect some shots as they come in.

6) Shallow Mach baskets that have lots of damage and inconsistancy and do not always catch that well. S hooks create the inner rings after being welded or attached to the baskets. They are helpful but at the same time somewhat inconsistant. These chains do not have a ring holding them in their place at the bottom, which would help tremendously in how they catch.

7) It seemed like a few of the holes were redesigned and because of the baskets being moved the tees are not pointed the right direction.

8) A little close to a few fences and houses, but you really shouldn't throw outisde the fence areas unless something freakish happens. Regardless, I have a feeling that is why the course had to be redesigned, because of errant throws ending up in their properties.

Other Thoughts:

This course has a fairly high rating despite its poor condition. It is still fun to play despite all of its issues because you have to plan your route on each hole. They are mostly hyzer holes but not all of them so you do need to execute a couple different shots to score well.

This is not an outstanding course by any means, but it still can be fun. Just another course played for me, and it was close to my hotel so I chose this one over any of the others in the area.

I got out of my car, and started walking to find the first tee and saw a penny on the ground. I bent down to pick it up and accidentally set off my car alarm with the panic button, so I apologize to any locals who live right there.

Surprisingly Good 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 17, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The nine holes and short-drives make this a perfect go-and-throw course if you have a half-hour or so. The mature trees are spaced apart, but still can pose a challenge. The concrete pads are great, but sometimes point the wrong way (see Cons).

The course is in the back 2/3 of the park and most non-DGers stay in the front 1/3 where the playground equipment is, so most days, the only people to worry about are the other golfers. I don't think I've ever played when there weren't at least one group ahead and one group behind me.

Cons:

Because the course is so old, some of the holes have been moved from their original location, so the concrete tee pads sometimes point in a different direction than the hole, giving you a shortened pad to throw from.

Very flat, so no hills or valleys for variety. The ground is extremely hard, especially in the 10-15 feet around the holes, so a disc that might drop and stop at another course will skip, roll and slide here for several feet. In addition to the ground being hard, it is made up of fine dust which sticks to discs and can interfere with your grip, so bring along a towel and use it frequently.

The signage desperately needs updating and I suspect that the distances aren't accurate, especially on the holes that have been moved.

The park is surrounded closely by homes, but only one hole (#7) poses a real threat of a disc being thrown into a yard, as long as you're not WAY off on a drive.

Other Thoughts:

The short holes make for great potential birdies and can give you a real boost of confidence.

If you need short-course practice, this is a great place to go.
