Better Than Expected!

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 20, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

Property features and available space used:

There is a pond in this park that is used several times as water holes. Hole 2 has a tee pad in the middle of the pond, kind of a little peninsula that is used to throw back over the pond and up a slight hill toward the basket. Hole 6 (old hole 8, we'll get to that later) is a mild tunnel shot to a RHBH hyzer finish that throws directly over the pond. Hole 7 plays over a part of the pond and is a technical throw albeit short to a basket guarded by a tree. All of these water holes have a carry that is reachable for just about anyone but still present the mental anxiety that presents itself with the prospect of a lost disc or a wade through the pond. Hole 8 is another favorite of mine, though not super challenging is a very fun downhill throw with an easy RHBH hyzer finish. Holes 3 and 4 employ tight lines, the former playing through a straight line of trees and the latter to a RHBH anhyzer line.

Variety and shots needed to score well:

Most courses favor the RHBH player and this course is slightly skewed in that direction as well but you will need to learn another line in order to get the birdies out here. Holes 2,3,4, and 5 all challenge you to throw straight/land straight or anhyzer a RHBH. Hole 9 is a classic roller hole IMO, with short, mowed grass and a long way to get to the par 4. I really like how punishing some of the bushes are here to errant throws and if you're offline you are looking at RHFH rollers and tomahawks to get out safely.

Navigation/teepads/baskets/signs/etc:

Navigation is a little funky since the maps here are off (more on that below) but the only real weird tee pad to find is hole 2. After putting head to your left down the path in the trees and take a right - you will see a bench and a tee pad facing back towards hole 1 and across the water, the rest of the course is fairly easy if you've played a few courses in your life. Did not have any problems with baskets, seemed in good shape for a 10+ year old course, tee pads much the same. Signs gave adequate information (par, distance, etc.) to at least get you started.

Cons:

I think if this were a 7 hole course it would be even better, let me explain. Hole 9 is an abomination of a hole. Its fairway plays over several other fairways, tee pads, and baskets. It's a long par 4 with very little redeeming qualities and could have been left out and made the course better. Hole 3 is kind of cool, very straight line of trees guarding the otherwise open basket but if hole 4 was eliminated could make one hole that is very good instead of two decent holes. These two changes would have made the course more challenging and safer, probably would have gave it a 3.5 if I'm honest.

Playing next to the water treatment plant isn't the most appealing thing and it smells through most of the course. Not really anything you could do design wise to fix this, just where the park is located - it is what it is.

Other Thoughts:

It seems as if this course has been redesigned multiple times as the map and pictures aren't even close anymore. Old hole 5 is now hole 1. Old hole 8 is now hole 6, not sure if any other holes are the same as they used to be. Judging by the reviews before me I'd say we played completely different courses. This was a pleasant surprise of a course and I would recommend it to just about anyone if you're around. let's put it this way, if I lived in Rexburg and wanted to take a buddy to a course who was visiting, I'd go here.

Worth it for Hole 8 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 5, 2017 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- Nice Baskets
- Tee Signs
- Nice mix of short & long(medium for big arms) holes
- Good use of trees for added challenge

Cons:

- Short tee pads
- Lots of cross over between holes
- Hole 1 & 2 are really close to a playground and gazebo
- Big course split between #4 & #5

Other Thoughts:

It is overall a fun course that I play when I'm passing threw the area. As others have mentioned hole #8 is extremely fun. I would rank it as one of the top holes in the region.

Worthwhile if you live in Rexburg 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 26, 2016 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Double chain baskets w/ chains tethered to center pole.
Well manicured park.
A couple of "grip it and rip it" holes.

Cons:

Busy city park when the weather is nice.
A lot of college kids who don't follow the rules/courtesies of the game.
Tee boxes are very small
A LOT of intersecting fairways/holes.

Other Thoughts:

If you're within 10min of the park, it's worth playing, but not worth seeking out IMO due to the cons listed above.

Criss Cross Toss 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 1, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

• Nice park with mature trees.
• I loved #8. I played it twice and wished I had time to play it a few more times. You have to tee over a pond onto a small peninsula on the other side. The basket is tucked into the trees on the back side of the peninsula.
• Good use of the park's natural features to create some challenging obstacles.
• I also like #4. It's a 460' Par 4 that has a small OB canal running parallel to the fairway on the left.
• Hole lengths range from 205' to 460'

Cons:

• Holes 1 and 2 play close to a playground.
• Only slight elevation change.
• No "Next Tee" signs.
• Short tee pads, especially #8. There is a tree directly behind tee 8 that won't allow a run-up. It's not a long drive, but I still teed from the side so I could have some more room.
• By FAR the biggest "Cons" are the multiple crossing fairways. 2 and 3 cross and 6, 7, and 9 cross (see map). I've never seen 3 fairways that cross like 6, 7, and 9 do. It's a good thing nobody else was playing the day I went or someone would have been waiting. I don't see how you could ever play a tournament here. A busy Saturday or Holiday could get ugly.

Other Thoughts:

I was in town for a conference and had to squeeze in a round on my lunch break. I wish I would have had time for 2-3 rounds. There is a pretty good variety of holes for a small city park. If this course was in my neighborhood, I'd be pretty happy.

The local club should really consider a redesign of holes 1, 2, 6, 7, and 9. The crossover is a real hazard. I think a more traditional "zigzag" or "down and back' layout could be done here. If I'm ever in Rexburg again, I'll play another round.

Fun Little Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 20, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Well maintained park.
Pads and signage.
Nice baskets.
Decent variety of for a little park.

Cons:

Tee pads are short.
Busy park so you need to yell "heads up" or "four" often.
Lots of holes share the same fairway.

Other Thoughts:

I live in town so this is my go to course I usually play it a few times a week. Its good for both casual and serious players alike. It is a small park so at times it can get a little crowded from people just out picnicking or if there are a few groups playing at once you will have to do some waiting for others to throw. That being said I really enjoy this and am happy to have such a nice course right here in the Burg. Hole 8 is a fun little over the pond hole. Me and my buddies play what we call 8.5. We stand on the island where the basket for hole 8 is and throw back over the water to hole 7 basket.

Meh 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 2, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-Tee-pads
-Signage
-Nice baskets
-Hole 8 is sweet, if you're worried about it skip the hole and practice up.

Cons:

-Crossing fairways. 6 of the 9 fairways cross. If anyone else is on the course look out.

-Many of the fairways are on busy parts of the park.

-The park can be very busy.

-I miss the old hole 2.

-Stinks like sewage from time to time.

Other Thoughts:

I waited till I had played the course many times at different times of the day to write this review.

While the baskets, tees, and signs are a huge improvement, the new layout has more interference problems than before.

The new course is using at least twice as much land, and has 6 crossing fairways. the old course had 2 crossing fairways. Someone is going to get hit.

The new course now has 6 fairways that cross over busy parts of the park. The old course had 1.

Overall I am glad about the update. I only regret that with all the time, effort, and money that was spent, a much more usable course could have been made. Good luck trying to hold any sort of organized disc golf event here.

Nice. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 2, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

All signage and concrete tee pads installed now.
Less dinky course now.
Normal baskets finally.

Cons:

Tee pads small.
Intersecting fairways.

Other Thoughts:

Although, the intersecting fairways thing.. It had intersecting fairways before too. It's a tiny park, and cramming nine holes in will necessitate crossing paths. I think the upgrade is an overall win. The old course lacked signage, so people played holes in random order, exacerbating the problem of running into other groups, so I don't think we can complain about running into groups now being a problem. I think I'll end up liking this course well. And the over-water shot is cool. My 10-year-old did just fine with it. (Of course, he's not a novice.)

Some nice upgrades, but lacks well thought out design 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 19, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

1) Nice new baskets (double chain)
2) All holes now have cement tee pads and signage to help you navigate the course.
3) The course is longer and more challenging than it used to be.

Cons:

The revised course layout is IMO deeply flawed. The fact that there are 4 holes on the south part of the park and 5 holes on the north part is not a problem, but when you look at the course map, the fairways crisscross all over the place.

1) Holes 2 and 3 crisscross each other.
2) The tee for hole 3 is in the fairway of hole 4!?.
3) Holes 6 and 7 crisscross.
4) Hole 8 requires players to play across a pond of murky water. The risk of losing discs in the water is real, especially for novice players. Two out of 7 people in our group went in the water; we were lucky to recover both discs, mainly because water levels are down this time of year - we wouldn't have been so lucky during the summer.
Also, when we played the other day, there were only two other groups on the course, and we were constantly in each other's way.

The number of crossing holes make this course a challenge when even a small number of groups are playing at a time.

Other Thoughts:

The course is a little longer and a bit more technical than it used to be, and that's fine, but the new layout is IMO a disaster!

Even so, local players are happy to have it, otherwise it's at least a 30-minute drive to the next closest course.

Nice Upgrade 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 12, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

NEW Baskets, Tee Pads, Course Design.
- Concrete Pads
- DISCatcher brand new baskets
- Variety of hole length, even an over the water hole
- Better use of the space that the full Nature Park had to offer
- Numbers on the tee pads. This is a major step up from the confusion the course previously possessed.

Cons:

- Amount of walking distance for a short 9 hole course. There are 2 parts of Nature Park involved at this course, but in dividing the park, they put 4 holes in one part, and 5 in the other, with a little bit of a walk between them, but nothing that can't be handled, this is disc golf.
- Concrete pads, though helpful, are quite short, and the pad size varies from hole to hole.

Other Thoughts:

This course was in dire need of something to spruce it up. As the renovation started, they had originally used the old single chain baskets. Recently they just installed baskets that wont spit out your disc every time! All in all, when first seeing the changes they were making to the course, I was a little worried that it wouldn't turn out well. But upon seeing the complete renovation, I think that they did a good job. The only regret is that they didn't try to make the course a few more holes long. They could have easily put in a 12 hole course to use some more of the space available.
