The Westport Course Has Gone To Seed! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 23, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

First of all, incredible views of the Pacific. Secondly, this course was once someone's pride and joy. Then that same someone somehow found the finances for the baskets and poured his heart and soul into this project. But currently, this course is a total and complete basket case.

The course sits on a steep hillside which is basically a pasture. The grass is 1-2 foot tall over much of the course. The ground is really hard to walk on as it's very uneven with lots of tripping vines throughout. There are also lots of scratchy plants.

There's a long steep walk up to the first tee. The tee pads are mostly dug out holes and then leveled. # 1 and another later hole have large plants right in front of the tees which have grown and now obstruct your view. I teed off on # 1 and then spent about 15 minutes searching and cursing myself for being so stupid as to throw my favorite driver here. I was much more cautious after that.

I'm not sure if this project course here on this steep, pastures hillside was ever a good idea. With the way the wind blows off the ocean, the tall grass and the overall steepness of the property, I can't imagine anyone being desperate enough to play here. I think the best and only solution is to pull these baskets and look for another more suitable piece of land in the Westport area.

Cons:

Just about everything. The steepness of the site, the high grass, the strong winds, the over grown plants, the rough terrain and the likelihood of losing your discs.

Other Thoughts:

When I saw I was coming to play a course rated over 2.5, I thought this was going to be a decent little course, maybe in a city park. Boy, was I surprised! The early ratings were better but those in the last few have proven to be more accurate. In it's current state, this course is not worth playing, even for us hard core course baggers.

Beginnings of a course or the end... 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 21, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

Unobstructed views if it's clear
friendly small town store to purchase refreshments and the like close to course
practice basket

Cons:

basically overgrown so that it's impossible to truly play the entire course.
tee pads are basically somewhat cleared dirt areas (with thin amounts of long grass) for basket 1, 2, 3.
Wear gaiters for thistle protection and bring a tractable disc like a Tobu

Other Thoughts:

I'm from out of town and camped in the area to check out the courses. This was the first of three that I went to and by far the worst. It looks as if someone started mowing and put up makeshift wooden signs to basket 1 and 2 which was good, but after that it's very much wtf? It's almost like they started mowing, ran out of gas and said meh, oh well ( will try and add some photos for reference.). Where the tee pads are supposed to be they have a good tee sign for the basket, but for example on 3 I walked up from the tee pad area, but could not locate the basket. I found what I believe was 4 and 5, but where the tee pad sign was there was so much overgrowth is was dismal to say the least to throw to the basket.
The grass and bushes are so thickly overgrown there that even with the mowing you are walking through mowed grass over your shoes.
Suffice it to say, unless I know for a fact that they will continue to mow and clear the place for actual use(which would really make a difference in it's playability) player beware. I

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 15, 2017 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

the views are spectacular, not just towards the coast but also up the mountain, amazing setting.
westport is a lovely little quiet town with very little traffic and nice locals. there's one affordable motel, and one more expensive hotel 2 blocks south with the only restaurant in town on the ground floor. there's one convenience store with a small deli, and that's it for services. no traffic lights or gas stations. not much of this vibe further south in coastal california.

Cons:

umm, i'm gonna say besides the baskets and signs, this isn't really a course. not much going for teepads, and the fairways of the holes are almost all very tall grass(like waist-high) with scattered shrubs and the thickest, most stiff impenetrable wind-blasted short evergreen trees you've ever seen around the edges of most holes.
the tall grass hides your discs really well, and if the coastal fog is going, that grass will leave you completely soaked. if it's during a dry spell during the summer, a flick of a cigarette could set the whole region on fire. the pics on this site are nothing like what i encountered, maybe they mow the grass occasionally when the fire danger is down. the course has an abandoned feel to it as of summer/fall 2017.

Other Thoughts:

this is one of those courses i feel maybe shouldn't be on dgcr- if you've never been and don't have a guide and/or a spotter, it's not welcoming at all. no teepads, and basically no fairways. throwing over 100% rough on every hole and looking for your disc on nearly every shot. it's great for locals that they have a place to play, but for the traveler types that use dgcr these types of courses are... most people aren't gonna enjoy it.

Sheer Beauty of the Coastline! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 22, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

Westport is one the most enjoyable 9 Hole courses I've played, no it's not La Raza - not super technical but very enjoyable ! Great amount of work looks like it has been done to get the course installed with continued work planned to keep clearing out the fairways and making new pin placements. What they have done so far is great and can't wait to see what plans they have to expand in the future! Onto the list of features of the course:

The layout of the course was pretty easy to follow - just have to look for the big number signs. From Hole 1 you can see just about every hole on the course and most of the tee pads.
*Very remote (I look at this as a Pro)
*Elevation change on every hole
*Mach V Baskets
*Two Practice Baskets across from General Store
*Super friendly DG Community
*Did I mention the views yet?
*Tee Signs with Distance
*Unrivaled views of the North Coast on EVERY HOLE!

Cons:

*Stinging Nettles on a couple holes! (Pants or Long Socks recommended (I wore shorts and paid the price - but it was worth it!)
*Dirt Teepads for now
*Ankle breaking ruts - watch your step!

Other Thoughts:

The views at the course are so amazing it had me pondering what it would take to transplant myself from Sacramento and move to the coastline - seriously these views are unrivaled by any other course I have played in the state... it's up there with Hole 15 Zephyr Cove NV - Top of the World DELA - Hole 17 Tahoe Vista. The course is definitely in it's start up stage, a bit rutted out from cows maneuvering the pastures in past but over time should level itself out. The potential to build an amazing 18 hole or even 27 hole complex is there and would be quite an amazing place to have it. As others have stated if this happens this could be one of the best courses in California - hands down. If you get up to Hole 8 and stare out at that vast ocean and don't have a moment of serenity & peace within yourself - you need to see a therapist. It is the best course to escape yourself and let free!

Beautiful and challanging 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 7, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The views are unrivaled, the elevation change provides lots of diversity among the holes, and the potential is there to become one of the best courses anywhere.

Cons:

The course is still in its beginning stages and has a lot of work to be done. I.e. adding a back nine, adding permanent tee pads, building a trail, installing benches and additional brush clearing.

Other Thoughts:

The course is well worth it and amazingly beautiful, make a day trip out of it. Disc golf a couple rounds then go to the Westport Community Store for a sandwich or pizza. Finish the day by heading across Hwy 1 and down to the beach for a sunset picnic. Wear pants and closed toed shoes for comfort, use spotters for blind downhill throws.

Somebody needed to write something 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 29, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Good design. Average lengths with open shots.
-Very scenic with the pacific stretching out for miles to your west.
-Flowed decent, and not busy at all. In-fact, I had the course to myself.

Cons:

-Wind can definitely be a factor, and discs can hide better than you'd imagine, stay alert.
-At the time I played it seemed to be very newly installed, tall grass and whatnot. Just needs to be played more I guess.
-Confusing parking to a passer-through like me. Felt almost like it was private land and it made me uncomfortable playing for the first couple holes. if it feels weird to you stop at the store and get to know the folks, seems like a nice little community.

Other Thoughts:

Honestly I would like to play this course again to get a better idea and give a more detailed/accurate review. But, seeing as to how nobody has yet I thought any info would be better than none.

Think I recall cement tee-pads and I can't remember if there was any signage but I didn't really have any trouble finding any holes.

If you are traveling up the 1 and you have your discs I'd recommend checking it out.
