Pros:

Fehringer Ranch is an almost entirely open 18 hole course. The only trees that'll really come into play are holes 11, 15 and 16. Even these are pretty sparse. The rest of the course is essentially wide open with slight to moderate elevation in a few spots. There's some shorter bushes in play on a few holes too which can lead to awkward shots if you're pinned up against one but are easily pretty easy to throw over. The creek can come into play on a few of the holes on the back nine too, though it usually requires a pretty poor shot.

The baskets are Mach III's with the number plates on the top. These were all in good shape and caught pretty well. Two or three pin placements per hole from what I remember, to go along with a single basket. A couple of the pin locations are elevated which adds a little bit of extra challenge.

The tee pads are concrete and all were nice and level and had good grip to them. One tee pad per hole.

The signs here are really well done. They feature the hole number, distances to all the pin placements, pars, elevation change and a pretty detailed hole map. These are some of the better signs I've seen in awhile. Very well done with these. They also show any applicable OB, of which there's quite a bit to up the challenge.

The design of the course is pretty well done. There's not much for natural obstacles out here but they did a nice job by incorporating the creek that runs thru the middle for a few holes. The flow is also really simple to follow. It helps that it's so wide open and dry that there's well worn paths from basket to tee, but there's no excessively long walks or anything.

The course is permanent and free to play. This would be a solid winter option too. Restroom by the parking lot and a practice basket between the lot and hole 1.

Cons:

As I mentioned above, the course is pretty much wide open. If you're into just ripping drive after drive without having to worry about shaping shots around anything, you'll dig this course. If not, you'll absolutely hate this one.

There's no shade out here either. If it's hot out be sure to have plenty of liquids. The course is pretty busy too, so you'll most likely encounter some backups too, which adds to the sun exposure.

The one thing missing from the awesome signs is a way to show which position the basket is in. Not a huge deal on most holes but a few of the longer ones are hard to spot. The silver colored baskets don't stick out the greatest.

A walking path criss crosses the course in a few spots so be cognizant of your surroundings before throwing.

Other Thoughts:

This appears to actually be one of the better courses in the general vicinity, which is pretty unfortunate. It's pretty shocking to see the difference in types of courses in the city compared to less than an hour up in the mountains.

If you're in the area it's worth a spin I suppose, but don't expect to be blown away. They did what they could here, but it's still a pretty dull experience.

My First Experience with Colorado DG

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 8, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

I finally found myself in Colorado with an opportunity to play. Looking at pictures this course seemed fairly representative of the area so I gave it a shot.
-Variety of basket placements. Every hole had 2-3 pin locations and a few of the holes actually had 2 baskets in so you could choose which to play to.
-Good signage. Signs showed all pin locations as well as the terrain and the current pin position.
-Still in town, but has a "wild" feel to it. The course is right off the main road and close to everything but the course feels a bit rough and wild.
-Lots of parking
-Practice Basket
-Nice teepads, including a Y-Shaped pad for a hole with choices
-Good variety of distances from short ace runs to bomber downhill let 'em fly holes
-Baskets have poles above them to help them stand out
-Benches, trash cans, and a walking path throughout
-Plays relatively quickly

Cons:

-The rough nature of the course leads to discs disappearing into some high, spikey grass at times. Be sure to watch the full flight!
-A walking path intersects with the course in many spots, so watch for pedestrians.
-There's a drainage ditch near several holes. It was dry when I played but it could be annoying if it had rained recently.
-The course felt a bit repetitive at points. Lots of long, dry shots with few landmarks to aim at.
-There's a school next door which can make the traffic difficult, especially when leaving. You can only turn right out of the road in.

Other Thoughts:

I had a good time here and it was a solid introduction to Colorado DG. The course does a good job with the area it has, it just lacks in something that "elevates" it from being fun to being special. If I lived here I'm sure I'd play this course regularly, but if I'm visiting and want something truly special I'd likely seek out a different course.

Pros:

- Good mix of distances and basket locations
- Varying terrain makes throwing up & downhill a challenge
- Concrete Tees
- Good signage and layout of open space
- Practice baskets & net
- Benches and trash cans keep it casual and clean
- Lots of parking and easy to find
- Baskets well marked for visibility

Cons:

- A few basket locations are within feet of a creek, could use a larger buffer for beginners.
- Tall grasses in rough can make finding discs challenging.
- Can be windy due to relatively few trees.
- Busy at times

Other Thoughts:

- About as Colorado as you get - natural grasses, wide-open spaces, beautiful views of the mountains and a glimpse of the city.

Some interesting choices by designers... 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 3, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

Quality baskets and tee pads, detailed signage at every tee. Great open layout that really lets you focus on your game instead of threading some ridiculous tree tunnel. Quite a few longer holes so you can really let it fly and get your bigger drivers out of the bag. Had fun on this course despite a few gripes....

Cons:

I think the multiple baskets DIRECTLY next to the very nasty ditch was a horrible choice by course designers, almost mean-spirited if you ask me. On two of the holes, if you miss your putt, you lose your disk, simple as that. Although this adds an element of consequence, it really discourages anyone to "go for it" on longer, outside the circle putts. The water running through the ditch is disgusting, and if you decide to go after your disc, you might want to get vaccinated immediately after :) Did the courses designers do this so that they could go harvest discs occasionally and never have to buy their own? Probably not, but I'm starting that rumor right here and now.

Maybe keep those next-to-water hole placements for tournament play, but move them off the water for normal everyday players.

Other Thoughts:

The vegetation can get thick when you're off the fairway. I played this course in the low afternoon sun and had an incredibly hard time locating discs. If you're not an expert player, I recommend playing in better sunlight so that you have a better chance of finding your disc. When the shadows got long for me, it was almost impossible to find discs at the end of the day!

Great Open Field Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 4, 2018 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

--Concrete teepads on every hole
--Signs with pin positions and distance on every hole
--Benches on almost every hole
--Multiple trashcans scattered through the course
--Multiple pin positions on a majority of holes
--Complex Layout involving shorter and longer holes
--Elevation changes on most of the holes including heavy uphill and downhill.
--Big course for smack in the middle of the suburbs.
--There's a vendor out here on the weekends that a portion of his sales go straight back into the fund for course maintenance.
--Trees provide a good challenge on a few holes
--Some newer trees were planted so in a few years as they grow there will be additional challenge for shot shaping.
--Great views of the foothills while playing
--Free to play on Jefferson County Open Space

Cons:

--Fehringer can get pretty crowded during peak hours.
--Multi-use park, so watch out for non-golfers on the back 9 near the general use walking path
--Coyote Dens in the field, stick to group play for glow rounds
--They mow it as often as they can, but due to the terrain and vegetation in the field only main fairways get mowed. During the middle of summer the rough here on some holes can get pretty deep
--Due to it's location at the base of the foothills, when it gets windy here, the wind tends to swirl producing very different wind directions 50 feet apart.

Other Thoughts:

A lot of people will mention the most challenging / aggravating thing about Fehringer is the OB Ditch. Yeah, it's there. Yeah, you get punished for running some putts if you miss depending on where you are putting from, but it adds to the challenge. If you are playing for score, push for those birdies on holes without the ditch, play for par on the tough ditch holes and hope for a mistake from your card-mates.

This course is a lot of fun. I may be a little biased because it's down the street from my house, but I learned how to play here, and I still really enjoy playing here. Despite knowing the holes inside and out, it's still challenging to play and just a generally fun course to hit up.

Due to it's proximity to the suburbs there can be an influx of people here especially late afternoon, early evening and all day on the weekends. Sometimes this results in you having to let faster groups play thru every 3 holes, sometimes you have to play thru slower groups every 3 holes, but it usually works out and everybody plays their round without interferring with anybody else.

Go play Fehringer, it's a blast!

Fehri is fun 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 15, 2018 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Fairly long holes, decent variety considering the available terrain, concrete tee pads, benches, nice signage. Baskets caught well. Practice net and 2 warm up putting baskets. Differing pin placements on some holes.

Cons:

Exposed landscape. In a few spots, the boundary line placements in relation to pins.

Other Thoughts:

Fun city course and it is on a large chunk of land considering it is in town, nicely situated between actual city and the mountains. This place will definitely keep your skills up to date. Weekends can get busy, not necessarily bad depending on the experience your after but mornings are mellow.

Got a Forehand? 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 19, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Shot variance. Though a VERY forehand friendly course, every shot in the bag is required. Distances varying from 186-500+ ft.

-Elevation change. You're going up or downhill on about 9 holes.

-Tee signs, pads, and navigation. Tees are nice, long, concrete pads. Multiple positions are mapped in color on very detailed signs, with current pin placement marked below. Stumps to sit on and hooks to hang bags on each pad as well, along with frequent trash cans. Course flow is obvious and easily navigable.

-The OB Ditch. Both a pro and a con, makes what would be an easy course quite challenging.

-Parking lot and practice area. Two separate practice baskets with a sweet four-way net serving as a driving range.

-Guarded pins. I would say about 13 holes have a very guarded basket and at least half of these holes play the OB ditch just feet from the basket.

Cons:

-The waiting game. It's a good course to learn on, as you are unlikely to lose a disc or get annihlated by distance, and therefore draws a crowd. That crowd frequently includes a lot of beginners and large groups. This course CAN be played in an hour by two decent players, but only at noon on a Tuesday. If you're playing in peak hours or the weekend, be prepared to play through some people and wait behind others.

-The OB Ditch. I'm not against it per se, but despite a lot of holes being ace runs, you get punished for trying. You also get punished for running a number of 20 foot putts or by hitting the cage. Drawing metal on a 20-footer can STILL leave you OB putting to save bogey.

-Other park users. Again, not inherently opposed to multi-use park courses, but this one has a lot of traffic with some very sketchy crossing points.

Other Thoughts:

This is a fun course. As a forehand predominant player, this is a REALLY fun course. I generally throw about even par here, and that is usually the result of combining a few OB ditch shots with some birdies on very forehand friendly holes. If you don't have a great backhand turnover, this course will punish you as a RHBH player. For the RHFH people out there though: PLAY THIS COURSE. You will have an advantage, and a rare opportunity to play 7+ 250-400 ft forehand skip-shots and spike hyzers.

The first 3 holes are all north of 300 and guarded, very rewarding birdies. If you've read this review, you can tell I'm very ambivalent on the OB ditch. It's small enough to be fair, but a stunning number of tee shots demand that you throw right at it to get the birdie. This is because the baskets on these holes are within LITERALLY 2 feet of the ditch. There was not a hole where the ditch was in play (minus 18) that left you more than 2.5 ft behind the basket on your putt. So not only can you be punished for attacking the baskets, if you bail out to safety you're still putting at Death. Given the 3 feet of relief you get from entering the ditch on an OB, it is WAY better to miss a tee shot close and save a drop in par then to putt a 25 footer, miss, and come back for bogey.

Some signature holes: The 6/7 Combo. A 186 foot gift that begs for a soft putter over the top, followed by a massive 489 foot bomb downhill at a pin 2 feet from the ditch. The first such pin you encounter.

#11: Plays 390 ft left to right, demanding a skip shot forehand through some "field goal trees" that needs to both get through and then settle before reaching the pin....2 feet from the ditch. I have no idea how a RHBH play for 2 would work.

#12: The Mound Hole. Basket is on top of a 20-25 ft tall mound, which unless you ace it, are unlikely to land upon. Better to lay up and take your medicine.

#17: Buried in the Ditch. Just Death. If you land right of the basket, you are OB. If You've done this by throwing a right to left shot, you were never in bounds and basically re-tee.

#18: Can it be reached? Yes, but you risk the ditch on the only hole where it crosses the fairway in the ideal landing zone.

All in all, almost a 4 disc rating, and for me it is a four-disc rated course. I acknowledge, however, that this is because I am a forehand thrower who loves the layout. The irony is that despite a ton of different pin placements, the holes that never change are the forehand shots. So come with one, or have on hell of a cut-roll turnover.

Fun course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 2, 2017 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-Long concrete tees

-Trees for obstruction of flight

-Dog friendly. They have poo-toob for dog poop on wooden posts at tees

-Hooks on all the wooden tee posts for hanging anything or holding dog leash.

-Very easy to navigate. They have a wooden post with a white tip at each tee as well as a diagram of the hole. Also they have on the wooden post A,B, & some C's and a metal ring next to each letter. The letter with the zip tie indicates where the basket is that day! This is the best diagramed/ easy to navigate course I've played by far.

-Trashcans to throw away my trash and anything I find on the course.

-2 different practice baskets. the one to the left has blocks in the ground and tell you how far out you are!

-A 4 way warm up net to throw into.

-Bathroom in parking lot

-Beautiful scenery

-Multi pin placement

-It looks like wood chips were added to the greens recently

-Stumps at all tees

-OB if you like the challenge

-Elevation changes

Cons:

-Not much shade during summer

-Traffic can be bad when school is in and its the end of the day for them.

-Footing on hole 12 (can be difficult in areas to get to the top without feeling like you will fall)

Other Thoughts:

I like how spread out this course is. I haven't seen this course crowded to the point of holding me playing alone up, but I also play during the week days. If i could change one thing it would be hole 10 closer to parking lot incase you would like to skip a crowd. I love the shot variation here. low ceiling, death putt, RHFH, long drives, and close ones covered by bush and small tree branches. I wish all courses had a warm up area like this place. i love the blocks in the ground for the distance on the practice basket and the very rare 4 way warm up net. There is some shade here but not enough to save you from not wearing sunscreen. Hole #17 needs the bridge back. I would highly recommend this course to a friend.

A tale of two courses? 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 29, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

• Baskets & tees are all in good shape

• Great signage - shows distance and pin placements in photographs as well as next tees

• Super easy to navigate - Plays a nice loop. This is one of the few courses I've played where no map is really necessary, even for a first-timer. Each next tee is within eye-shot of the basket.

• Amenities - There's a port-o-john at the ample parking lot, a couple practice baskets, a driving net which is something I'd never seen before, as well as stumps at each tee if you need a sit plus plenty of trash cans.

• Decent mixture on distances, and great use of the available elevation. Plenty of RHBH's but there are some RHFH's tossed in there. Effective use of hazards whether it's the OB or trees.

Cons:

• Front 9 to me was a little one-dimensional, despite the elevation - most of the variety comes in on the back 9.

• Not a lot of protection from the sun - if you play in summer, bring plenty of water and sunscreen and also be prepared for some long grass off-fairway.

• Potentially crowded at times? The day I played there were a couple groups in front as well as behind, but my timing was perfectly in between them all. That said, add a couple more groups to the mix and that changes things.

Other Thoughts:

I was a little underwhelmed when I first pulled up to Fehringer, even w/ its ample parking, practice baskets and port-o-john. It just didn't look all that exciting.
However, I quickly realized not to judge this book by its cover. While the shot variety on the front 9 is a little lacking, the elevation helps make up for it as well as the variety in distance. There are some blind shots
here that may require light scouting. The back 9 really brings the OB creekbed into play. Several holes utilize it in one way or the other and in general
there seems to be more creative use of the landscape. A tale of two courses?
I can see where other players/reviewers might find the OB a little over the top, especially 17, but for me it added some fun challenges.
I particularly enjoyed - 11B, with the basket tucked away on the other side of the creek
- 12 with it's basket on top of the mound (be careful, a misplaced shot and you'll simply go right back down to the bottom)
- 13 w/ it's reuse of 12's mound to provide some difficulty off the tee
- 15, which has a thread-the-needle feel w/ a clear RHFH shot if you can make it in between the bike trail and creek
- the aforementioned 17 - I think it's a fun one b/c at least for a first timer, you don't realize at first that the creek bed branches into a bunch of sections, making the hole an OB minefield.

I enjoyed myself at Fehringer and consider it one of the more fun courses I've been able to play in the area so far. I'd definitely suggest it and will definitely be back.

A Fun Challenging Expirence 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 5, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-Out standing warm-up area (Multiple baskets for putting as well as a net for driving)
- Multiple pin placements on around half of the holes, and pin rotation is fairly common with at least 2-3 baskets being moved each month.
-Flat, concrete tees with a decent distance with in length and width.
-Easy to follow with very apparent trails from basket to the next tee box.
-Tee sign are helpful both in distance and location of each different pin position.
-A good mixture of shorter holes (less than 250) average holes (250-350) and big arm holes (350-500).
-Most holes have some obstacle if its OB, elevation changes, mandos, or trees).
-Shorter holes have long (Pro) tee pads to make the course more challenging.
-Baskets catch well are in good condition
-Wood chips have recently been placed around tees and baskets
-There are logs, stumps or benches to sit on on every tee.
-There is flags on the top of every tee sigh and each basket so a player can tell what direction the wind is blowing at every given time.

Cons:

- During summer the fairways can become a little overgrown and the rough will eat discs (This is only relent on holes 7,9,11,13,14).
-If you find yourself out of fairway you will come across some rather nasty stickers that get stuck in your clothing.
-Its windy here more often then not, but that makes the game more interesting.
-This is a popular course for golfers in the Denver area so have some extra time if planning to play because the course can become crowed and slow moving.
-On a few holes (3,7,10,17) the OB becomes over the top with very frustrating and uncontrollable OB stokes with the OB being feet from the pin.

Other Thoughts:

This course is a wonderful place for people of all skill level, as long as they have a positive attitude. Every shot is different in it is a prime example of how the sport is expanding. This is a great place for Coloradans to play in the winter as the show melts quick and the grass is under control. If you are a Pro or just a family trying to have fun this course will preset a enjoyable challenge.

Great view of the mountains even though it is a fairly flat course.

Cons:

Not all the tee pads were concrete (though I met a team of awesome folks who said they would be pouring concrete on all of the tees on Saturday (8/6/16). I am not from the area so I cannot confirm if this was done.

Some signs were knocked over when I played.

Some holes are blind and they have several pin positions so you just sort of have to guess.

It is an open course but the grass can cause you to lose a disc.

No par listed on the holes, I just played everything as par 3.

The warm up area was awesome. They had a 4 sided net to catch warm up drives from 4 directions, I have never seen this before. Definitely good addition.

Cons:

Not all tee pads were finished. Holes 3-7 blind and hard to find baskets. For the fairways you gotta cut the fairway wider. That tall grass hides disc well and destroys your legs.

Need to get tee signs everywhere. 18s green clear the brush around the basket.

Other Thoughts:

I did enjoy holes 8-16. Course does have some opportunity but blind holes with barely mowed fairways where the tall grass not only hides your disc but cuts your legs.

I happen to live nearby so I consider this course to be my home course and I think it does pretty well with the given surroundings. The course has a some topography and lots of little trees and it attempts to include a lot of them in the design so that's to be commended. The tee boxes are truly awful and always rutted out, but that just goes to the popularity of this course in which it seems to be always busy! -The mix of short holes, long holes, left finishing and right finishing is good and logical
-Great informative sign at the beginning of the course; it's obvious that the local Parks Department has a vested interest in this course and will support further developments (which are in the works)

Cons:

-Biggest and most glaring issue is the "teepads". They aren't so much a pad at the current time. Rather some odd clay mixture with wood borders.
-Parking isn't great. There's actually decent room but people tend to park oddly, especially when there aren't many people there
-This course has potential but right now it's pretty average

Other Thoughts:

This course will be amazing five years from now. Playing it now, as is, will give you a good grasp on what is to come at Fehringer Ranch. If you enjoy it, please support the local clubs efforts to improve this course!

OK, tee pads are terrible 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 6, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

Has a variety of distances. Not a lot of other "park" users to be concerned with. Has some fun holes.

Cons:

Tee "pads" are in terrible shape, at least half have holes/pits in them, even if they didn't have the pits, they offer no grip for your feet... maybe they will get cement in the future?

Other Thoughts:

Overall a decent course. I won't be going out of my way to play it though. Not bad but nothing special.
