Bring an extra pair of socks... 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 31, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

Huge and open fairways on the front nine. Goes to a more woodlands in the back. Absolutely beautiful course and well maintained.

Cons:

The marshy area sucks horribly. Its just not the water but the added goose, duck, or any other animal feces that your feet have to endure. I'm sure in the drier seasons this isn't a concern.

Other Thoughts:

On one of our holes the geese refused to move. We just shot through them. It was pretty comical on some of our shots. I guess the geese are used to discs flying at them.

Pros:

Front 9 is very wide open and makes it beginner friendly. Course map at every hole. Putting area to practice puts. Multiple tees each color coded with flags. Challenging course with some longer holes and some shorter. Most holes are flat were a couple either go up hill or down.

Cons:

Fairways are cut very short and can lose discs. Very busy around course with runners and car traffic, have to watch before throwing because holes are over roads.

Best of NW PA 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 8, 2019 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

nice Mach V baskets
three sets of concrete tees offers a variety of difficulties
large course map at beginning and at least one sign per hole
3 practice baskets for putting and looks like 2 more practice for approaches
the course is always very well maintained, along with the rest of Buhl Park.
parking galore
park has many other amenities, dog park, walking paths, fitness stations
hole 18 finishes by a nice lake

Cons:

lots of pedestrians walking around as course is mostly outlined by walking paths (even on packed days this really isn't a huge problem, sometimes you just have to wait a minute and let someone pass by)
few open holes that are flat out boring (2 and 3 come to mind)

Other Thoughts:

elevation wise mostly flat, but there is a uphill wooded hole and a downhill descent into a huge open field hole.
not all open holes, there are some fun wooded holes early on and at the end.
Overall you aren't gonna find a nicer course in the area of NW PA or NE OH. Combine this with nearby The Pines to get your woods fix and it's a great combo.

beautiful park, uninspiring golf, and a missed opportunity 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 27, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

-beautiful, well-manicured park; excellent park amenities
-excellent practice area, 3 practice baskets
-3 sets of concrete tees on (i think) each hole
-various pin positions on (i think) each hole
-detailed signs at one tee (usually the blue) with current pin location indicators
-color coded flags at each tee
-some interesting holes that make good use of the trees available
-plenty of parking, restrooms, numerous other activities available in this huge park

Cons:

-signs to next tee hanging from the baskets are not always correct
-the first 7 holes are almost entirely wide open, except hole 4; it starts to feel repetitive
-very thick grass really slows down rollers, too bad on these long, open holes
-at least 12 holes have a pedestrian path in play, potentially 5-6 holes (depending on tee & pin location) play across a path
-many holes seem long for the sake of being long, i think it tries too hard to cater to 3 tee levels
-i guess 3 tees is better than 1 but think this particular park needs a really fun recreational level track, not a par 65 slog
-course map is outdated; holes 10 & 11 are redesigned, 17 is gone and 16 is now 17, a redesigned 15 & 16 are between 14 and the baseball field.

Other Thoughts:

Buhl Park is a huge complex with sports fields, walking paths, a fitness trail, pool, dog park, and more. The park is well-maintained and gorgeous, free of trash and apparently mowed and trimmed frequently. The course has an excellent practice area with 3 practice baskets, 3 sets of concrete tees, a color-coded flag at each tee, nice Mach V baskets, various pin positions on each hole, and a detailed sign at one of the tees that includes a current pin location indicator. I do wish the signs were consistently at the blue tees. They were often at the white tees and it meant going out of the way to see where the current basket is and then walking back to the blue tee. There are also signs pointing to the next tee attached to the bottoms of the baskets, but they are not always accurate depending on the current pin location.

The first seven holes are almost entirely wide open, save hole 4 which is a good hole: a tight tunnel with an uphill finish. The others begin to feel repetitive, especially after 1125' of it on hole 6. The tee shot is cool from the blue but the rest of the hole is just there to get you closer to hole 7. You finally get into a more wooded area on holes 8 & 9, a left turning and right turning pair of reachable deuce holes. Holes 10 & 11 have lots of moderately spaced trees with low ceilings. I can't recall if these redesigned holes had tee signs. From there it is a walk across the playground and parking lot to get to hole 12. The stretch from 12 to 18 takes advantage of the picturesque meadows dotted with trees and constitutes the better holes of the course. The lakeside green on the par 4 hole 18 is a nice end to the course.

The pedestrian paths come into play heavily on the course. They are in play on at least 12 holes and 5 or 6 holes potentially play across a path depending on the tee and basket position. Basic sense should prevent any issues but you know how that goes.

It feels weird to say that fewer options would be better but I can't help but feel like the 3 tees and par 65 layout aren't the right character for a park that would probably be better served with a shorter, recreational level course with more birdie opportunities for the less skilled player. For such a family-oriented park it is not a very family friendly layout. Given that the same designer also designed the other local course (a wooded beast) the same year, it seems like a missed opportunity to address a specific and important audience.

All of that said, the course at Buhl Park does offer a nice experience with high replay value for the locals with all the various tees and pin locations. It is worth playing if you are in the area and along with The Pines in Sharpsville makes for a nice regional destination spot.

Bring Out the Big Distance! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 13, 2018 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Buhl Park, not Buhl Park DGC, but Buhl park itself is completely gorgeous. Beautifully manicured with a lot to look at. The park rangers work really hard to keep this place in exceptional shape.

The disc golf course utilizes the mostly open nature of the park, sprinkling in the few mature trees on the property to create line-shaping opportunities. For the holes that utilized the trees, there was a good variety in the lines that needed to be hit.

Every hole in the course had a multitude of pin location, creating different distances and greens that change the outlook for the local players almost every time they play. Some of the pin positions looked especially interesting, and I hope the next time I play I can get a better idea of the design.

Every hole has three concrete tees of adequate length, and while the day I played in the tournament, there were no tee signs, from local knowledge, tee signs with map and a pindicator will be put in within the coming months, which will be a huge improvement.

Cons:

About 1/3 of the holes play with little to know impact with trees. The only challenge on these holes will be the wind, distance, and a possible OB path/road. These holes provided very little challenge and no real scoring separation.

Speaking of the OB paths and roads, there are a multitude of holes that have the walking path that winds through the park in play. On a beautiful May Saturday morning, our card waited a few times for walkers that were enjoying the park. Please be mindful of park visitors!

Little to no elevation was in play for most of the holes. This park is surprisingly flat for what is a hilly state, but elevation does not come into play very often.

Certain holes qualified as tweener distance in my eyes, either too long par threes, or too short par fours, this again can impact scoring separation, and can also make for boring pars or birdies.

Other Thoughts:

This course is a beautiful representation of park golf. Beautiful fairways, mature trees, and immaculate conditions. There are a few tweaks that could be made, but all in all, this course uses everything within it's premises to use. I would recommend it to anyone passing through!

1,000 Footer in a City Park? Yes Please! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 30, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Buhl Park isn't your typical city park course. Lots of long, challenging holes that perfectly incorporate Hills, scattered trees, and water. This course can challenge anybody.

The enterance area to the course is just fantastic. Very nice quality sign reads "Buhl Park DGC, a Trevor Murphy signature design". Trust me, this is definetly a signature course by Mr. Murphy.

First off, there is a large practice area with three baskets. Nice way to start off.

Lots of unique holes that were designed perfectly. Variation in distance, tree cover, and elevation make this a real western PA gem.

Three sets of tees, all of which are concrete. The tees do a very good job of providing variation hole to hole. The tees aren't just stacked directly in front of each other.

Mach V baskets are one of my favorites. Each hole has one, with the number boldly printed on top.

#14 is a really cool pin position. The basket is guarded by shrubs and tall pines.

There's a good amount of scattered trees in the park, so most holes aren't just "grip it and rip it". Lots of lines to hit, as well as risk reward situations.

Odds of you losing a disc are very slim.

This is a very clean cut, well maintained Park. Very enjoyable round here.

There's a fun hole that plays downhill, through scattered trees. It's over 1,100 feet from the blues! Didn't expect that in a city park...

#18 provides a nice view of the pond, and makes you a little nervous throwing your approach. Don't end your round on a lost disc!

Cons:

There's really only two issues with Buhl Park.

I'd like to see someone paint the top corners of each tee box so you know which tee is which. That would definetly be a big improvement.

Many holes play near walking paths. The park is so big, the odds of a bunch of people walking in the same area are low. Still, keep an eye out before you throw.

Other Thoughts:

If there were no other pedestrians here, this would be a 5.0, great job by Trevor Murphy to put a quality course in a very nice park.

If you're in Western PA, make sure you play Moraine and Buhl. Buhl Park competes with the best of them, glad I got to enjoy it!

Cons:

Very basic layout. There didn't seem to be much attention paid to the flow of the course and how it plays.

Other Thoughts:

I may have been biased since I live about an hour from this course. If this course was 20 minutes away, I might consider it a little higher rated otherwise but I still feel it lacks imagination, especially considering how Buhl is such a beautiful park.

Bombers dream course!!! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 15, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course is located in a HUGE beautiful well maintained park with amentities galore. Between parking lot and #1 tee box theirs a nice big map of the course layout on the side of the bathroom building. Not a lot of trees to get in your way being in more of a wide open park. This course is probably one of the nicest maintained courses I've payed on. If you like wide open disc golf holes that you absolutely have to bomb then this course is definitely for you. This course is 8 minutes away from The Pines DGC.

Cons:

The whole course seemed rather swampy, even in wide opened fields of play. Very BUSY park especially on nice days so be wary of cars and pedestrians when throwing. Corse has grass tee pads which are a little wet and muddy. Cement tee pads would be a BIG improvement. At least with cement tee pads your drive off the tee could have some traction when the rest of the course isn't so forgiving in the not muddy part.

Other Thoughts:

Other than being pretty wet and not having cement tee pads I can't say too many bad things about Buhl Park. It is such a gorgeous park there isn't many things to complain about. With some cement tee pads and some aeration on the swampy fairways this course could be world-class.

Solid Park-Style Course - Beautiful Area 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 6, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course plays right through the middle of a large, very well taken care of park. Because this is such a big park, it was helpful having numerous signs directing you to the start of the course. Buhl Park is a beautiful spot and offers a classic park-style course with its moderately wooded holes and ever so slightly rolling hills. I'd consider this to offer more of a casual round, one that would make for a fun play with friends or in a league. It offers a real nice balance of providing some challenges, while at the same time being pretty forgiving. The three different tees do a good job of changing up the hole and the distance. Because of this, beginners are able to comfortably learn the game here while advanced players are still challenged.

The designers did a great job of maximizing what the park had to offer. The course mostly emphasizes hitting long lines between scattered trees, so distance and accuracy are pretty equally tested here, with slightly more emphasis placed on length from the long tees. Lots of different shots are forced from the tee, be it turnover, hyzer, anny, or roller. Perhaps the best part of the course is that there are often multiple routes to choose from tee to basket. This greatly adds to the replay-ability of the course.

Some of the highlights here include hole 6's long, downhill shot that forces you to hit a gap between trees. Also, 18 is a lot of fun and is the hole with the most risk/reward play involved with the basket placed only a couple of feet away from a pond. The use of O.B. on a few holes makes things more interesting as well.

I saw multiple mowers throughout the park and it seems like it is kept in top shape. Hardly any rough at all, so there is very little chance of losing discs.

Good amount of next tee signs pointing you in the right direction.

Cons:

There are walking paths/roads near most of the holes. Nothing overtly dangerous, but definitely a constant thing to look out for throughout your round.

The tees are natural and there are no hole maps on the tees signs; they are just small signs with numbers and hole lengths on them that are low to the ground. Not sure what the future plans are regarding this.

Holes 2 and 3 are completely open/flat and don't offer any sort of obstacle.

There's one uphill and one downhill hole, but this land is dead flat otherwise.

A couple of long walks in between holes (6-7 and 11-12) and from the parking lot to the course.

Other Thoughts:

I agree that this course has potential and should only improve over time if more amenities are added. Nothing will blow you away at Buhl Park, but it offers you a consistently solid park-style round. This is worth hitting up if in the area and is conveniently located a couple of minutes from the constantly improving The Pines DGC. I'm glad to see this area growing its disc golf scene.

- Couple long walks between holes (take a picture of the map. We needed it)

A few tweaks will make this place great 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 19, 2015 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Absolutely beautiful park that was just begging for a disc golf course. Hole 18 is a great finishing hole, absolutely gorgeous. Much needed course in what has been a dead-zone area for so many years. Easy walk and very well maintained. Very little rough to deal with.

Cons:

The biggest issues I noticed were that there were quite a few long walks between holes, that seem as they could have been avoided, quite a bit of repetition where you will throw the same shots over and over. And quite a few tweener holes (par 3's that are too long and 4's that are too short) which makes it hard to get a wide scoring range on holes. Some holes also have you throwing over and near busy roads and walking paths.

And most of the pins are facing the wrong way, so you can't always see the number plate from the tee.

Other Thoughts:

Buhl has amazing potential. I hope that they take the time to tweak the layout and distances before concrete tees get poured. With a few adjustments, this could be an amazing course. Right now it is a fairly average course that will be loved by the locals. Hole 18 is the one hole you will remember after playing. It's by far the nicest hole on the course. Overall, I enjoyed playing here, but it needs some tweaking to bump it up to that "great" level.

Its a new course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 11, 2015 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Buhl is one of the best maintained courses ive ever been too. It also is located in one of the most beautiful parks in Pennsylvania. Maps and scorecards for the course seem to be available. Pavilions and bench seating are plentiful throughout the course making for relaxing enjoyable play. The course is pretty new and the baskets are great. Every hole allows you to throw BIG BOMBS without much threat of trouble. Great place for those just getting started or for those players working on their distance shots.

Cons:

a few of the par 3s were a little to long and the par 4s were not long enough. No tee pads, very few obstructions to challenge a players accruacy (other then occasional parked cars or pedestrians). Signs were present but at the moment not as good as some of the older courses but I think this con is due to the infancy of the course and will be remedied in time.

Other Thoughts:

All in all I really enjoyed playing Buhl and will attend any event scheduled. It is worth the 1 1/2 hour drive for tournament play. And I'm also hopeful that as the course matures it will become better and better every year as new ideas for improvement roll in. Ive met the course caretaker and he really works hard to make the place better day by day.

Another Great Course for the Shenango Valley 2+ years drive by

Pros:

Being from the Shenango Valley, I always said, "Buhl Park would be a great place for a disc golf course". And now, Trevor Murphy has done it, and in a crazy-quick amount of time! The layout takes advantage of much of the perimeter of the park, with some nicely laid out holes. Add to this Trevor's ability to sell it to the administrators, and there you have it! An excellent course! And the best part is that it seems that a lot of locals are jumping in with both feet! Way to grow the sport Trevor (His second install of this year, by the way!)
