South of ATL? Gotta play this one. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 16, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

- The longest course I've ever played. Super fun, get ready to rip it.
- Has some very challenging short holes as well.
- Great example of the Georgia countryside, many low lying branches you have to avoid.
- Great design, well manicured.

Cons:

- OLD signage, needs updated.

Other Thoughts:

A classic Atlanta disc golf course. A MUST on anyone's list of courses to visit while in ATL. This course is super challenging, and will challenge even the best players. It's a great place to play if you'd like to air some throws out.

Good mix on scenic land 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 9, 2014 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

One concrete tee pad per hole, mostly clear and accurate signage, bathroom available nearby (at the playground), and most importantly some solid golf holes both long and short.

Scenic and very representative of the Georgia landscape for visitors from other regions... One of my favorite aspects of disc golf is that good courses immerse you in the regional landscape, giving you a sense of the area in a way that visiting a city in a car can't do. JP Mosely, like nearby Redan and the excellent Perkerson Park, is beautiful and typical of Georgia countryside. Where JP Moseley edges out other top courses is in the sense of being out in the country. It's a different sort of beauty than a city park, enhanced by the fact that I had the massive course mostly to myself early on a Friday morning.

The course starts with a long downhill par 4 that starts open and finishes in the woods, with a specific landing zone you need to hit to set up a birdie approach shot. It's a great beginning to the course, and sets the tone from the start. Most holes on this course have either specific lines (on the -300 foot wooded holes) or highly advantageous landing zones (on the par 5's) which will set up either the birdie putt or put you in the right spot for your next drive and give you a shot at birdie. There are still plenty of choices to make, even on short technical holes, which is refreshing.

The course requires a nice variety of shot, with some holes practically demanding a shot you may not use often. I drove with a forehand on one hole (and definitely could've on others if my forehand were stronger) and a backhand sky roller on another, neither of which I use often off the tee.

The roller was on hole 7, which was a standout for me in its simplicity and difficulty. At the end of a +-400' gradual open downhill, the basket is tucked under the long reach of mature hardwood trees to the right of the fairway. The branches protect the basket from a forehand hyzer bomb, and the basket is too deep for a backhand turnover to reach it under the very low ceiling.. The only way I could figure to get in there was with a roller, and it worked beautifully but felt somewhat lucky considering I never throw that shot... It was nice to be "encouraged" to try something different by the course.

I played the course from whichever tee had the concrete tee pad, which was a bit confusing.. Sometimes it was the blue, gold, or black. I had intended to play the black, but it was early morning and the dew made the grass slippery, so I played the "concrete" layout as I called it. I scored under par both rounds I played, but didn't feel the course was too easy. I think it definitely is the type of course to reward multiple rounds over time, as there are lots of different ways to play the course and score well.

The course takes you through various types of landscape, from tight pine forest, to rolling hills, and back into more sparsely forested holes. The beauty of this is that each landscape requires a different type of shot.

Cons:

Only one concrete tee per hole; signs are sometimes in odd places and at times have inaccurate distances. The course is definitely good enough to warrant a concrete pad for each position. Also, the single pad fluctuated as to which position it was on which was strange. I would expect it to be always on gold, but this wasn't the case. The signs were at times on one tee position but reflected the distance of another position, notably on hole 11. His is an island type hole in an open field, throwing uphill. The sign claims a distance of 263', but as the sign is on the gold tee, it should actually be 303'. This hole being open and without anything clear to gauge the distance by eye is deceiving, and that distance difference is a key one for most intermediate players who can reach 260' on an easy hyzer but would have to change shots and discs entirely to reach 300' uphill. The following hole also has the same problem.. Sign claims 500', but unless I gained super powers right before that hole and lost them right after, it's closer to 375'.

Some holes, notably 11, 12, and 18 are open holes with no obstacles. 11 is an island type hole, basically a putting circle around a basket in an open field that is all OB, 12 a slight downhill, and 18 an uphill shot with a steep decline behind the basket. The rest if the holes are good enough that it's not a huge detractor, but the property is so massive I feel there could be some other solution. Especially for 18.. The course deserves a stellar finish (like at Perkerson) and instead you get blah blah uphill.

Also, some of the tees in the back 9 are just a spray painted line on the walking path that winds through the back part if the course.. Though it is concrete, again, the course deserves better than a spray painted line on a track. It would also help to separate the other uses of the park from the disc golfers to have tees that aren't in the path of joggers.

Other Thoughts:

The course can be extremely hot in the summer, as much of it is in open fields. Prepare accordingly or play early or late. Bring plenty of water; the only supply I found was in the sink at the playground bathroom (ugh). Also, be aware that the closest you come to returning to the parking lot is hole 7.. After that you're committed to a long walk. There are so many covered benches available that this isn't a con, just something to be prepared for.

The rough is mostly playable in the wooded portion of the course, and not so much in the open portion. There are many places where a badly thrown disc is just eaten by the jungle, and I'd say they are mostly avoidable, but wind and over throwing on the long holes can easily make for some errant shots into the woods. If you do wander in after a disc, you'll wish you hadn't worn shorts because of the frequent briars and poison ivy.

Overall, this course is just behind Perkerson Park to me in ranking Atlanta area courses, but absolutely worth the short drive out of the city for a visitor who wants to experience Georgia disc golf. It's near the top of my list to play every time I'm here.

Tight and Open! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 26, 2013 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

First let me thank Adam, Joe and Stephen for showing me the course and allowing me to win ;-) I gave the course a 4.0 'cause a 3.5 was too low. I think this place is a solid 3.75, maybe close to 4.0. But nonetheless, a very fun course.

The first few holes are misleading. After playing 1, you enter a series of tight, technical holes that make you think it's going to be this way all the way through. But that changes when you hit the back-to-back holes 6-8 where you GRIP and RIP! Then it opens up for while on a series of sub-300 foot open holes. That's until hole 13 and it's 1000+ fairway. If your arm ain't taxed by now, it will be!

Then's it's back through the pines until 18 where you have another 400+ uphill toss.

Cons:

Very minor, but some of the signage distance was really off, especially hole 11. Sign says 263, but it's waaay more.

Other Thoughts:

Grass was really high when I played, so it made the ground very wet and hard to find your disc. Might want to keep this in mind when you play

Extremely well maintained course. Lots of distance and a good variety of wooded and open holes. Nice use of mandos on several holes, and the "island" hole is a nice touch.

Cons:

Holes tend to be very heavily wooded or completely barren fields...would be nice to see a few more lightly wooded holes mixed in.

Very nice course with some distance 2+ years drive by

Pros:

This was my third course ever played. I'm a local stockbridge resident, and was excited to have a course so close to home. This is a fairly spacious course with some extra long par 5's. The layout can be tricky, which encourages me to get out there and play more often. The area is nice and quite and very relaxing.

Cons:

My only con was that it had rained earlier in the day and due to the amount of rain in a short period of time, there were a few slightly flooded areas. Other than that this place is awesome!

Great multi level course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 22, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is a great course. It definitely offers a great deal of length and playability options for all skill levels. This was one of the first courses that offered distinct challenge to me while obviously showing how many options can be made available to the DG community to level the playing field for all involved.
There are a wealth of benches throughout the course to rest from the long walks down the fairways.

Cons:

Some of the tee signs could use replacing. This can make things confusing for a newer player. However these cons are greatly outshined by the pros

Other Thoughts:

Black tees are thrown in, so if you are playing the "really long" track look out for 1 and 13.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 27, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This course is one of the better courses in Georgia. It has mown grass, nice baskets, great tee signs, and very nice tee pads. This course offers a great mix of open and wooded holes and utilizes the land provided to make an awesome layout. I played this course from the gold(playing hole 13's black) and the mixture of par 3,4 and 5 and open/wooded makes for an exciting round. There are flags on top of each basket. Also, one of the best features are the benches which are on almost every hole. This makes for an enjoyable round since the walk is pretty long considering the course is long.

Cons:

There are a few improvements that could be done with this course. The design, although a good one, could be vamped up a little to make it more of a true gold course. Also, the baskets are a little hard to see when playing in the woods. Maybe some brighter colored flags, or some type of markers to indicate the basket location. Also, there were hardly an garbage cans on the course, which could pose problems with trash build up. Although the course was fairly clean, I can see where it could get messy quickly.

As far as design goes, I feel as if some of the holes were "tweeners" and could be tweaked a little to make for a more challenging course. The hole that comes to mind most is hole 15. This is a par 3, but it is impossible to reach in 1 shot when in the long. Maybe this hole could be lengthened a little more and made a true par 4. Also holes 1 and 12 could be lengthened a little to make them a little more challenging. It is almost as if they reward a good shot too much, while a bad shot is still rewarded. I feel as if on a true gold level course, a good shot on a par 4 should still leave you with a little work, but still have some reward. Not too easy, but not too hard. Hole 12 is a par 3, but could be lengthened a little to make for a tough par 3 that really rewards a good shot, but a bad shot has more work to do. Although these are minor, I just saw the possibility of making things a little more gold caliber.

Other Thoughts:

This is a fun course. I have played here multiple times and will definitely play here again when I'm in the area. If you were by yourself and never played this course, I think it would be easy to navigate. This is a must play if you are in the area!

Pros:

JP has a great variety of holes. All tee pads are concrete and good sized. The course flows well from hole to hole and is easy to navigate even for a first timer. Park is very clean and most holes have a covered bench at the tee pads. Holes 1, 7, 8, 9, &13 are long open holes that are really fun for players with power. Holes 2-6 are tight wooded holes that really demand a clean shot. Mandos are used well on several holes. Baskets are visible from most tee pads. Course is marked well and each hole has a sign.

Cons:

Sometime the grass gets a little out of control. Holes 8 and 17 can steal your disc with the quickness. There is poison ivy in some areas and lately I have seen alot of snakes.

Other Thoughts:

My favorite course yet. This is the course that I learned to play on. I love that it gives you the opportunity to throw a lot of different shots. If you haven't played it yet you need to.

Long Arm Heaven! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 24, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Hard to add to what the prior reviews have mentioned but if you have the long arm, this is one fun course!

- Great mix of big open drives as well as more technical wooded holes.

- Great use of the elevation to form some gorgeous fairways.

- Lots of teepad options on each hole.

- Unique "skull island" hole in which you have to make it inside a circle green that is slightly uphill and further away than it seems from the pad. ;-)

- Course seemed very clean and well maintained and there were plenty of other disc golfers out enjoying the course.

- the course flowed well. There were a lot of people out on the course but not really any backups. The sheer size of some of the holes keep the groups spread apart nicely.

- A great workout for anyone that appreciates the exercise aspect of the sport.

Cons:

- If you like a course to circle back close to the parking area around hole 9, this isn't it.. From the moment you leave hole 1 teepad, you are committing to a long walk out on some gorgeous property. Hole 6 circles back just a bit, but then you head deep into the property.

- Light pedestrian traffic that can delay a few shots but you have lots of room to work with to avoid pedestrians for the most part so it didn't appear to be a major issue.

Other Thoughts:

I loved this course. It was my first course played in Georgia and it definitely set the bar high for the rest of my GA trip which hopefully will include 5 or 6 more courses.

Don't miss out on this one if passing through south Atlanta area!

Meandering Moseley through the park 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 30, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

1) There is a kiosk at the first hole with rules of the game and such. There also is a practice basket available right in the same area which is always a nice touch.

2) 3 tees per hole (plus some fourth PRO tees extend an already long course) on most holes with some duplication. 1 of the tees is concrete on every hole and sometimes covers two tee locations. Colored posts mark where the tees are, Red is the forward tee, Blue is the middle tee, Gold is the back tee, and Black is the extreme PRO tee . . . only used on a couple of holes.

3) Risers have been inserted into the tops of the baskets to make them more visible. This is really helpful when the baskets are tucked behind some shrubs or tucked around corners.

4) Excellent property for disc golf because it is so diverse. There are plenty of tight wooded holes, a handful of mostly open holes with a few key obstacles to avoid, and then a couple of just bomber type holes where the more distance you can get the better.

5) You need to be able to work your disc in all directions, while the hyzer is the primary shot on your drive you will most likely need to throw a few recovery anhyzers. I actually had to throw 5 short turnover recovery shots with my Stingray on 5 of the first 6 holes and I got up and down everytime for par. There are still a couple of turnover drives but it is more hyzer friendly.

6) Nice tee signs with Hole #, Par, Distance, and a map of the hole.

7) Helpful directionals in the woods to direct you to your next hole.

8) Plenty of benches and garbage cans available on the course and they have taken it a step further to put those benches under a rain shelter of sorts. While it is not much bigger than the bench it should do the trick unless the rain is coming down sideways.

9) Skull Island is just a unique idea . . . making a manufactured Out of Bounds, that actually is a benefit to the course and a very unique hole. I am not sure where the Pirate thought comes from as Atlanta is well inland from the ocean, but just go with it I guess.

10) Fairways and walkways to the next hole are lined with logs, which really helps with navigation.

11) Legitimate Par 4's and Par 5's on this course which is just awesome to see. I know most of the longer holes are fairly open, but there still are obstacles to create some fun shots.

12) Any course that allows me to throw a couple of rollers instantly becomes a decent course . . . well not truly, but rollers are a lot of fun to throw so I always enjoy it when a course allows it.

13) Mando's used effectively to create and define fairways and shot shaping.

14) Excellent distance variation allowing for all types of shots required to play well out here. I always appreciate it when I end up needing to use just about everything in my bag.

15) Easy navigation through this course with a really natural layout and feel to the routing.

16) Shorter tees basically seem to be in line with making the course playable for different skill sets. Red would be a good recreational or novice players, blue I good for intermediate and advanced, Gold is good for advanced and lower level pros and black is really only viable for the biggest throwers in the game.

17) Ultimate in distance variation with the biggest variety I have ever seen.

Cons:

1) Overgrowth was not too bad in most spots but there were a few really punishing areas alongside of the fairways.

2) There seemed to be lots of trippers underneath all of the fallen leaves. While I didn't have a problem finding my disc in the wooded holes, I could imagine playing right after leaf drop would be tough to find discs that could easily slide underneath the leaves.

3) I would personally enjoy more obstacles on the longer open holes, but I know this was part of a large tourney with a lot of the big pros and they want to see more aired out shots, so I can understand why it has been laid out the way it has.

4) The wooded holes are pretty tight but I can imagine finding more lines after playing this course more than once.

5) The two forward sets of tees are grass/dirt or natural teepads. It would be nice to see that the beginners playing the course get the same treatment.

6) The pedestrian path gets in play a few times on the middle of the course but otherwise the course is completely on its own property from other activities. Because the path is in the mostly wide open portion of the course there are really no worries about hitting people MOST of the time.

Other Thoughts:

Apparently there is an interesting regional difference because in the Atlanta area they apparently refer to their circular traffic dispersers as "Traffic Circles" while in Wisconsin and other places they call them "Roundabouts". I bet they probably call their individual water dispersers as "Water fountains" while we refer to them as "Bubblers". Apparently Georgia is more of the realist and pragmatist types while us northerners are more artistic.
Another interesting thing to note is this course is basically bisected a couple times by a sewage or storm-water easement. It actually makes for some nicely defined fairways that run right up these lines.

3) Requires use of a variety of shots...hyzer, anhyzer, rollers, just a mix of everything
4) Some Very interesting Mando's on this course to make the already good course that much better
5)Benches at every hole, some with coverings...and trash cans at most holes
6) GREAT signage between holes
7) 4 tees on each hole (some do overlap)...playing a different tee often gives a completely new look to each hole
8) Good baskets as well. could easily pick out the basket on the 1000'+ hole from the tee

Cons:

1) As mentioned before...the "big" holes are A Long way from the parking lot. I would love to maybe see a water fountain somewhere around hole 9 (i know, wishful thinking, but i need a con)
2) if you miss the fairway, expect high grass or briars, Great, wide fairways though.

Other Thoughts:

Normally i'm, not a fan of "big" holes (400'+) but this course does them very well with mandos, and forcing skillful throws rather than just bombing it out there.

A must play if you're visiting the area.

Challenges every aspect of your game... 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 21, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Large, concrete tee pads on all holes; I haven't found any to be slick either, which can be an issue if the conrete is finished to finely.
- Multiple tee pads; it should be noted that many of the AM pads are natural, but providing that option is nice, nonetheless.
- Great mix of holes; there are some shorter holes were ace runs are possible, and then there are some longer holes, where you really have to let it fly. However, the long holes still require accuracy, which is what many "long" courses miss.
- Good mix of shots required; anny, hyzer, straight, etc. You can get pretty creative on how you want to shape your shots. Just be sure you hit your lines. The longer holes may look open, but watch out for those mando's and OB lines.
- Multiple pin placements; I always prefer for a course to either have multiple pads or multiple pin placements. This course has both. Really adds the option for a variety of looks.
- Great park setting; the park seems nice and pretty well maintained. Everyone I've met at the park (disc golfer's or not) have been cordial and most will even say hello. The park is in a safe area as well.
- Benches on many holes, and several even have structures (i.e. roof) that provide much needed shade.

Cons:

I really don't have many cons for the course, as it's one of the better layouts I've played. However, a couple of things do come to mind; namely:
-Sometimes the grass can get long on a few of the open holes. I realize it's a very large park, and mowing it often is a chore and costs money. However, it's not necessarily fun to walk through shin high grass when you drove it in the fairway.
- Natural tee pads; I don't have a problem with earth pads, as long as they are in good condition. I've noticed that some of the AM pads are in pretty rough shape. I personally prefer the gold tees, but having concrete pads on all tees would make that option more desirable.
- No water out here. I must admit, I've yet to play a course that does provide water stations, but it gets hot out there during the summer, and holes 8-14 are a long way from the start. Therefore, carry with you any water/drinks you think you'll need.

Other Thoughts:

Overall, this is one of the better courses I've ever played. The cons are merely trivial things that don't really detract from the quality of the course and the shots it requires. The layout is demanding, but very fair, and good shots will be rewarded. There aren't any holes where you have to hope to get lucky to close. If you put good moves on it, you'll shoot well. If your shot is errant, be prepared to take a stroke, maybe two or more (those OB's can get you).

Many longer courses tend to favor those with bigger arms, and while those who can throw it far might have a slight advantage, here a premium is put on placement. The designer(s) did very well incorporating many different factors of the park into the course. There are lots of good lines and hazards to keep you thinking. Hole 11, for instance, could have been quite an average hole, but they implemented an "island" green that really makes the hole special.

Great course. This is now officially one of my favorites.

Pros:

This course was immense. I have only played 3 courses in my day, and Moseley was not only bigger, it dwarfed the other two combined. The layout was very intuitive, I never missed a hole. Good blend of technical and all out disc chucking opportunities, sometimes on the same hole. Lotta benches and nice spots to distract you from your game. Couple really nice trails, and chill spots. Mostly secluded from other park activities, and it's as free as laying in the sun. Multiple launch pads was an awesome feature as well. Almost every hole had 2 or more.

Cons:

There were some times when I had to wait for Pedestrians to walk by so that I could throw. Bring ample water with you. No water on the course (though I have never been to a course that DID have water stations) combined with it's sheer mass, can get thirsty.

Nice challenge 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 21, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course offers a wide range of challenges, and keeps things interesting throughout with lots of different types of holes. You'll play through tight woods with narrow technical lines to hit, and open long bombs with lurking rough or ob with everything in between. I enjoyed the mix of technical and distance challenges that make you throw just about every disc and shot you've got to score well.

There's a nice mix of hole shapes to go with the distance variety. The wooded holes offer a balance of left and right turning shots to keep things interesting, and many of the open holes call for hitting a line off the tee or placing your tee shot to have a good approach to the green. The flow of the course is pretty easy to follow despite a couple longer walks, and the multiple tees offer a great set of options for different levels of players. The long concrete tees are nice pads, and the natural shorter pads are reasonably level and in decent shape.

Cons:

Though the shorter pads are decent for natural tees, it seemed like a lot of newer players were playing the long tees to play from concrete. The shorter tees offer nice challenges, and would probably get a lot more use if they had decent tee pads. The grass was pretty long in some areas, it's a big park to mow but losing a disc on the fairway is frustrating. There are some holes where it's not obvious where to find some of the tees, a little better and more consistent signage and navigation would be nice.

Other Thoughts:

I had a great time playing here. It's a little rough, with lots of dead stuff on the wooded fairways and lots of long grass, but it offers some great challenges. Beginners will find the short tees approachable, with reasonable lengths for newer players. Experienced players will find themselves tested from the long tees, you'll need distance and accuracy to score well on the various types of holes here.

Pros:

Excellent,large teepads.

Almost every single hole has a bench, with many of them having some sort of coverage for some nice(and needed)shade in the ridiculous Georgia heat.

The front 9 of this course,in my opinion is easily one of the best halves of golf i've played, not one bad hole. Some people might complain saying they are too tight and technical, but there is definitely a line, just a very tough one to hit.

Very easy to navigate with an excellent flow to the course.

Cons:

There were a few holes on the back 9 I wasn't really a fan of,overall it was still enjoyable, but a couple of them just didn't offer anything too exciting,it's expected for most courses to have a couple of "ehhh" holes, but the rest of the course was just so awesome it caught me off guard.

On a couple of holes, the walking and biking paths definitely come into play, but most of them are pretty far back in the park, and I only saw a few people using them.

Other Thoughts:

This was the sixth course I played this past weekend, and this is by far the best in the atlanta disc golf scene. There are quite a few long holes, including a few true par fives,so make sure to bring plenty of water to prepare for this epic.

Signature holes for this one for me,would definitely be the rock OB hole, which is just fun,and if theres no one near you, definitely can turn into a bag emptying one quickly, and also the first par five of the course, the tee shot is ridiculously fun.

Overall,if I had to recommend just one course to play while you were in the Atlanta area,it'd be this,Atlanta disc golf is horribly decentralized(as I learned) but almost all of them are worth hitting up.

Pros:

J.P. Mosely Park is a difficult course, primarily due to distance, but fairly open and not without a few birdie opportunities. There are multiple tees for most holes, and I mixed in a few gold tees but mainly stuck with the blues on my only visit. Each of the baskets was there, and in decently good shape. There is a sign near the first tee with a course map. Distance is listed for every tee at each hole. Most holes have signage also. Overall mix of hole shapes and distances is widely varied. There is a mando, and an island to add some flavor. Well chosen path creates interesting lines through the trees, with plenty of chances to air out some long, open drives also.

Cons:

The only really bad thing about my visit to Stockbridge was the way I played there. I guess more concrete pads would be a welcome addition. Threre were also once or twice where the signs were not in good position, and I had to backtrack to find tees.

Other Thoughts:

This course is not exactly beginner friendly, but it is great fun and challenge factors. I was playing lousy golf when I passed through, and would love another shot at this one for sure. The Atlanta Open was in progress when I arrived, so I had to wait for an hour or so to play after my long car ride. Totally worth it despite the long delays and bad scores. Wish I could have seen the pros working this course the day before.
