Andrew Brown

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 7, 2023 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-- Good land for disc golf, with lots of water, a decent number of trees and some minor elevation. Some of those features are well used, some are abused and others are avoided.
-- Holes 2-4 are devious and really bring one of the lakes into play. Two (370ish) is pretty open with water right and sidewalk left. Three is 284 feet straight ahead and completely open. OB sidewalk is less than 10 feet to your left and the ground starts sloping down to the water less than 10 feet right. Four (310 feet) throws over a corner of the lake slightly uphill to a basket tucked into a stand of trees. Five (88 feet) and six (390 feet) play on a narrow piece of land with bushes left and land that slopes down to the water. Even good shots have a good chance of finding water. Seventeen (315 feet) is about a 225-foot water carry over the corner of a lake, but you've got a bailout option left.
-- Mostly well-maintained in clean park setting. Grass has recently been mowed, but just about the entire fairway for 15 was waist-high. I think this is a no-mow area.
-- Bench and trash cans throughout.

Cons:

-- Tee pads are natural; some are not holding up well; 5 and 6 are not level.
-- Tee signs are old, and some (2, 6, 11, 12, 16) are missing.
-- Walking path comes into play a lot.
-- LONG walk 8 to 9 and 18 back to parking lot.
-- No. 14 basket is leaning badly.
-- No map on site. Navigation is decent, but there are some weird paths. After 10, you see a tee, but it's 13. Walk past that and into the woods for 11-12. Walking from 15 tee to 15 basket, you walk right past the 17 tee. Sixteen tees away from 17, so you've got to backtrack 500 feet after 16.
-- Four wooded holes (7-8 and 11-12) are extremely short and narrow (to the point of being overgrown) and don't offer realistic paths. Combining them and doing some clearing could give you two good holes that would still be 200 feet or less.
-- Too many long, open, boring holes: Nine, 10, 13, 16 and 18 are completely flat and open.
-- No practice basket.

Other Thoughts:

-- The course plays alongside two ponds (a third beyond 18 is almost completely dry and not a factor on the hole), around two baseball fields, beside meandering sidewalks and through wooded creek banks. Moore Road dead ends into the park from the surrounding neighborhood, leading to parking adjacent to No. 9 basket and No. 10 tee. That means you come back by your car mid round.
-- This is a difficult course to rate. The best holes are really good and make you want to play them again. The worst holes are a combination of totally boring or so poorly designed that good shots are likely going to result in a lost disc.

Nothing outstanding 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 8, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

Set on large multi use park
Decent tee signs with layout of hole
A few decent holes set close to the water that make thing interesting
A few decent holes set in the woods
Older baskets but still catch good

Cons:

Too many open, not difficult holes
Natural tees, no defined tee locations
Multiple holes close to walking paths
Couple holes close to the baseball fields

Other Thoughts:

Low overall rating, would say this course is alittle better than it's current rating. Better course near by.

General Lackluster Design Despite Daunting Water Hazards

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Feb 26, 2019 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

+ well-maintained in clean park setting
+ several intimidating holes test players to throw near or over OB water
+ uncrowded and often empty

Cons:

- one third of course is flat and featureless, offering no challenge except distance
- holes #2-6 provide tough challenge due to close proximity to pond with narrow, sloped fairways and greens from which discs often skip or roll OB into water, especially for LHBH throwers
- four wooded holes (#7-8 & #11-12) are extremely narrow, short ace runs which would benefit from being combined together into longer, wider holes
- a few long walks between holes
- fairways for a third of the holes overlap sidewalks frequently in use by pedestrians
- course lacks a welcome sign to direct players new to the course in determining the layout or where to begin
- several natural tees are uneven, especially on #5-6 which slope sharply towards the pond
- wild flower areas which are not mowed during spring season crowd the fairways and greens of #5-6 & #15-16 with tall grasses which can be a nuisance to play through
- good chance to lose disc(s) throughout course to one of three ponds or a creek in the woods

Other Thoughts:

INFO
Course plays alongside three ponds, around two baseball fields, beside meandering sidewalks and through wooded creek banks on far east side of popular multi-use city park. Moore Road dead ends into park from surrounding neighborhood, leading to parking adjacent to #9 basket and #10 tee where front nine and back nine loops converge. Course layout forms a horseshoe around parking lot with tangents extending along sidewalks out toward ponds. Restrooms available at recreation center in park located much farther west of course.

EVAL
Despite daunting water hazards on early holes #2-6, the overabundance of unimaginative holes plus the inclusion of paltry short, wooded holes makes this course feel monotonous after only one round. The few exceptions to the general lackluster design skew rather punitively with risky shots that heavily favor RHBH throwers and often prove more frustrating than challenging due to threatening OB water near those fairways and greens.

Beginning players will be overwhelmed by the OB water holes while experienced players will find the challenges unfairly risky and the course lacking in variety. All will quickly tire of repeatedly throwing uninspiring shots and fretting over losing discs in the pond despite best efforts or cautious play. The natural grass tees show little sign of wear which indicates just how seldom this course gets played. I only recommend playing here to practice field work, to get in a quick round or as an occasional diversion.

NOTE
Andrew Brown is a bit of a misnomer now as this course is actually located in Moore Road Park. It was originally installed at Andrew Brown Park East in 1994 as a 9-hole course around ponds and a play area. The the course was expanded, redesigned and eventually relocated farther east along Denton Creek to adjacent Moore Road Park which has its own entrance distinct from Andrew Brown Park East.

LAYOUT
Walk east from the parking lot up towards a sidewalk atop a berm to the first tee. The course starts with a short toss toward the neighborhood on hole #1 plus a bit of a walk along the sidewalk and past a stormwater channel to the next tee. The next five holes, #2-6, wrap around a pond with risky OB water hazard all along the right made even more perilous by fairways and greens sloping down to the water. Holes #2-3 play out in the open, hole #4 features a hidden green tucked in woods beside the pond and holes #5-6 are flanked by woodlands to the left of their narrow fairways. Across the sidewalk very short holes #7-8 double back through the woods with a lengthy walk required thereafter to reach next tee #9.

Holes #9-10 play back and forth across an open field near the parking lot. Across the sidewalk two more very short holes, #11-12, follow curved trails through woods. (These hidden holes uphill from the sidewalk are easily missed, especially as #13 is clearly visible nearby and often mistaken for the next tee.) The reaminder of the holes all play out in the open with holes #13-14 lying beyond the outfield of ball fields to the left and holes #15-16 playing along a small hillside near a second pond. A short walk doubles back to hole #17 which skirts the pond on the right. Final hole #18 throws to a green near a third pond on the left.

Pretty Nice park. Disc part bad 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 29, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Great park. A little water a little woods. Nice baskets. That is all that is good.

Cons:

Forest holes are too short.(WAY TO SHORT) Huge snake and 5-6 are overgrown and hard to find. To many holes near path with walkers/bikers. Way to close have to wait all the time. Many tee signs are now missing. On the wide open boring flat holes the PAR are too high and if the field is in use you have trouble Disc.

Other Thoughts:

Its the EAST part of the park

Just awful.. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 22, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

A few open holes to let a drive rip. Couple of holes in the woods that are different and unique. Severally holes for ace runs. Located in a huge park with lots of other activities to do.

Cons:

Just overall awful course. Not taken care of at ALL. No tee pads on any hole. A couple holes didn't even have their basket. Way too easy to lose your disc in the pond. A couple holes are on the edge of the pond. No map or next tee signs so very easy to lose track of where to go. This course has potential I think, but doesn't seem like anyone cares to try and fix it up.

Other Thoughts:

This is a course that I would stay away from. Make the extra dive time to another course. This park is mainly for walkers/bikers and baseball. Be smart and don't go for any holes near the water.

not that bad, just no fun 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 23, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

-16 1/2 baskets, 18 signs
-good use of the water hazards to create challenge (2-6, 15, 17, 18)
-lots of open holes good for driving practice
-a few wooded holes to change it up (7, 8, 11, 12)
-enormous park complex with everything you can think of
-holes 5 & 6 are a cool idea but the fairways are pretty narrow for the typical conditions here

Cons:

-basket missing on 7, cage missing on basket 8
-no tees but space to throw near each sign
-wooded holes are gimmicky. very short, super thick woods, 2' fairways
-course flow is not so great. lots of backtracking and it's not obvious where to go after 4, 6, 8, or 10
(follow the walkway after 4, hole 5 is just ahead next to the lookout area on the right. after hole 6 go across the walkway to the woods on the other side to get to 7. after hole 8 go back out to the open field and after 10 head back into the woods for 11 & 12.)

-baseball fields are next to (part of) many fairways. probably have to skip 5 or 6 during game days
-walking paths and many pedestrians, many kids playing
-not too bad the day i played but apparently the wind gets crazy here. not worth the trouble on the water holes.

Other Thoughts:

This course was not as bad as I expected it to be but maybe that is because the wind wasn't howling. The majority of the course consists of wide open holes in a field next to some baseball fields and two small lakes.

The water comes into play on 2-6 and 15, 17, & 18. This is the primary challenge besides raw distance. 5 & 6 are hyzers with the lake on the right with a narrow fairway sloping down to the water. Cool idea but they're REALLY narrow, seem to be eroding further, and are overgrown. Might be cool if they were in decent condition and not back to back.

7, 8, 11, & 12 are short wooded holes and while I appreciated the effort to change it up I personally found them gimmicky. Short and narrow is okay but not when there is literally only 2' of a path and it is overgrown.

The flow and layout is odd but surprisingly easy to navigate with the signs, apart from a few trouble spots. It's really easy to miss 11 & 12.

Overall, not a bad place to practice driving in an open field if it is not too crowded or windy. Not much in the way of obstacles, challenge, or fun but there is most of a course here.

Worst 17 1/2 in the Metroplex 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 20, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Course does have some challenging shots. 4 holes border a lake. Two of those holes (90ft & 300+ft) have a landing areas less than 30 ft wide. When there is no little league practice, there is a big field you can use to break in new discs

Cons:

If this course had 18 complete holes (some baskets are incomplete), I'd call it the worst 18 in the Metroplex. When you're not throwing your worst discs by the water, you're constantly having to negotiate an incredibly busy park. Unless you're looking for a constant source of annoyance, go somewhere else.

What is with the 1 ratings 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 30, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

1. Easy to nagivate.

2. Gives you great chance to work on your game without interference from obstacles like trees and creeks.

3. Has a few very unique holes (you will see them when you get to them).

4. Plenty of parking, and i do mean plenty.

Cons:

1. Couse has no real substance to it. I can see they tried to make the couse more appealing, but did not do a good job.

2. They tried to get cute with some of the holes, but all it cuases is some doubt for beginners to throw.

3. Some of the holes are not mowed or trimmed which makes it difficult to play. (since two of the holes are along a big pond).

Other Thoughts:

There should not be any ratings of a 1 in my opinion (on any course). Everyone wants disc golf to pick up. These cities make an attempt to put some disc golf goals and tees in, why would you bash them because you dont like the course. If you a disc golf snob, why play this course, then give a bad review. You could have read the reviews and not gone here in the first place.

i had fun... 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 12, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

This was a fun round on a fun little course, a hot summer day with high winds. The park is very pretty with two large ponds and a sort of scenic panoramic view of the whole park and course. The course was freshly mowed on this day, including the few wooded holes except for holes 5 and 6 near the pond. I felt like I had the entire course and park to myself. I saw only a family of five out on the course, there are some baseball fields that would probably interfere with a few holes if practice were on, but on this day nothing but the occasional cyclists and a few pretty girls walking around.

Cons:

As others have noted the course is mainly open holes with a few short ridiculous holes in the woods. For the most part the degree of difficulty lies in baskets that are far too near the pond on banks that angle down towards the water. I played safe and narrowly avoided losing any discs on this day, but I have no doubt losing discs can be a huge issue here. I think the scenic view of the course make the open holes worth playing and the short wooded holes being freshly mowed were still fun. If you wanted to skip holes 5 and 6 you could just avoid the two most complained about holes and still have a fun 16 to play.

Other Thoughts:

I wanted to do this review to provide a few directions that would have helped me out. First, as you pull into the park notice the first speed bump and a sign that warns you about the bump, on your right is the first hole. The parking lot is a little further and it is not obvious were to begin playing. Hole 2 is to the left of hole 1's bucket about 400ft and then you turn around and throw back towards hole 1's tee pad. The course flows pretty well from 3 thru 8. From 8 walk back down the sidewalk and you will run right into 9 back out in the open after a bit of a walk. After playing 10 walk straight up into the woods to find hole 11. If its not mowed it may be more difficult to find. The rest of the course was easy to follow. Good luck...

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 17, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Lots of parking
-Located in a very nice park
-Near-by restrooms
-Shot variety ranges from open holes to extreme water hazards.
-Functional t-box signs

Cons:

-Very bad design..there are a few holes that are just awful if you throw one certain way (hole 6 - you're screwed if you don't have a left handed understable/flick shot for you LHBH throwers)
-If it's windy out, you'll know it.
-Dog walkers, hikers on the trail, and possibly some sports practice might interfear with your round.

Other Thoughts:

It's always fun to get out and try a new course, but this one will piss ya off. Again, really rediculous hole planning.
Group of buds and I -- really decent D.golfers -- lost a total of about 8 discs in one round, not due to bad shots, but due to the hole design on most of the holes.

If you don't live nearby, don't waste you're time visiting this course. It's not worth any length of a drive to say the least.

Updated review 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 13, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Had a good time playing 12/12/09 on this course. It was cloudy and the wind wasn't blowing very hard. The course was well maintained and some of the holes (5 and 6) are different than any of the other courses I've played. Being the middle of December and 45 degrees, there weren't that many people there. Our group was the only people playing the course = a fun pace. On the open part of the course, the grass was mowed. On 5 and 6 that are right next to the pond, the grass was about a foot tall... keeping discs from rolling into the pond. In the wooded area, it wasn't badly overgrown as I would imagine it would be in the summer. A lot of birds at the park... the ponds were nice to look at.

Cons:

There is a very good chance of losing a disc in the pond (especially on holes 3, 5, 6 and 17). The basket on 14 was leaning pretty bad... if you went past it to the right, you couldn't put it in the basket because the chains were hanging straight to the edge of the basket causing spits on direct hits on the chains. The open holes were just flat fields with no trees. The wooded holes were really short. Quite a few doggy land mines near the path. A little too easy.

Update: Played again 8/13/11 and baskets 7 and 8 are gone. This downgrades the rating of this course. It wasn't as fun this time. More people to wait on.

Other Thoughts:

It was fun playing this course, so I gave it a good rating. It's not one the best in DFW, but far from unplayable. The course was in good shape making for a nice round. I can see how a lot of joggers, dog walkers, baseball games and a lack of mowing or overgrown wooded areas would severely lower the score. It might not be as much fun in the wind either, but the scores under 1.5 are really unfair. If you want a waste of a course, try Springfield Park in Rowlett. That course is the example of a waste of your time. This course is certainly playable and hole 6 in particular was challenging and fun to play (even with the limited tee area and the pond).

Update: played in the summer. Not as much fun. Too many people to wait on. Missing baskets.
