Pros:
Cashiers/Glenville is a beautiful park and rec center. It's packed full of different activities. And in between all those activities, they decided to squeeze in a course. Players beware!
- In and of itself, it's a good course. Now, consider that every single hole overlaps with at least one other aspect of the park, from walking trails/sidewalks, parking lot, ballfields, ponds, and buildings.
- Pulling into the parking lot, there's a lone basket on an island of grass next to the parking lot. 'That's an odd spot for a practice basket,' I thought. Nope. That's hole one.
- #3, 4, & 7 are the best holes, an excellent mix of fun and scenery. #3 & 4 both require you to hit gaps, both with fences/OB coming into play.
- #7 is a fun hole with the basket five feet from the basket. You've got to stay left; however, the further left you throw, the more challenging your putt will be. #9 is also fun.
- Great tee signs. You need ones this helpful as this is an atypical layout.
- Outstanding facility. Disc golf stands out like a sore thumb here.
Cons:
Bad layout due to safety concerns with every hole. To recap:
- #1: dogleg left blind tee shot throwing towards park road. Parking lot is to the left.
- #2: throwing over a sidewalk and stairs. Restrooms right of basket. Baseball fence beyond basket.
- #3: throwing directly over sidewalk. Baseball field to left.
- #4: OB fence to right. Baseball field/dugout to the left.
- #5: probably the less invasive hole. Baseball fields to the left. Basket is on a slope, so propensity is for discs to fade back to or over the fences.
- #6: short blind shot throwing downhill over a path. Go long and there's another path and the pond.
- #7: pond entire right side of fairway. Sidewalks the entire length of the hole.
- #8: throwing over sidewalk, pond to the left, building to the right.
- #9: throwing over path with pond to the right and building to the left. Blind tee shot.
Other Thoughts:
Other than every hole being a potential issue, Cashiers/Glenville is a perfectly fine course.
- If the ball fields were replaced with woods and/or the course didn't overlap with other park facilities, it would be a fun layout. It's just not fun throwing every tee shot not knowing if someone may suddenly be walking around the corner.
- Very well-maintained facility. It's very enjoyable. And they're add more here.
- This is a swanky mountain town. Lots of money from tourists and retirees is obvious. Just look at the stores on the main streets compared to some of the other nearby towns (Cherokee, Franklin, Brevard), and you'll see it's a different target audience. Makes having a disc golf course here stick out even more.
- This could be fun. It could also be a safety hazard. That's for players to decide.
