Asking for Trouble

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 27, 2024 Played the course:once

Pros:

Cashiers/Glenville is a beautiful park and rec center. It's packed full of different activities. And in between all those activities, they decided to squeeze in a course. Players beware!
- In and of itself, it's a good course. Now, consider that every single hole overlaps with at least one other aspect of the park, from walking trails/sidewalks, parking lot, ballfields, ponds, and buildings.
- Pulling into the parking lot, there's a lone basket on an island of grass next to the parking lot. 'That's an odd spot for a practice basket,' I thought. Nope. That's hole one.
- #3, 4, & 7 are the best holes, an excellent mix of fun and scenery. #3 & 4 both require you to hit gaps, both with fences/OB coming into play.
- #7 is a fun hole with the basket five feet from the basket. You've got to stay left; however, the further left you throw, the more challenging your putt will be. #9 is also fun.
- Great tee signs. You need ones this helpful as this is an atypical layout.
- Outstanding facility. Disc golf stands out like a sore thumb here.

Cons:

Bad layout due to safety concerns with every hole. To recap:
- #1: dogleg left blind tee shot throwing towards park road. Parking lot is to the left.
- #2: throwing over a sidewalk and stairs. Restrooms right of basket. Baseball fence beyond basket.
- #3: throwing directly over sidewalk. Baseball field to left.
- #4: OB fence to right. Baseball field/dugout to the left.
- #5: probably the less invasive hole. Baseball fields to the left. Basket is on a slope, so propensity is for discs to fade back to or over the fences.
- #6: short blind shot throwing downhill over a path. Go long and there's another path and the pond.
- #7: pond entire right side of fairway. Sidewalks the entire length of the hole.
- #8: throwing over sidewalk, pond to the left, building to the right.
- #9: throwing over path with pond to the right and building to the left. Blind tee shot.

Other Thoughts:

Other than every hole being a potential issue, Cashiers/Glenville is a perfectly fine course.
- If the ball fields were replaced with woods and/or the course didn't overlap with other park facilities, it would be a fun layout. It's just not fun throwing every tee shot not knowing if someone may suddenly be walking around the corner.
- Very well-maintained facility. It's very enjoyable. And they're add more here.
- This is a swanky mountain town. Lots of money from tourists and retirees is obvious. Just look at the stores on the main streets compared to some of the other nearby towns (Cherokee, Franklin, Brevard), and you'll see it's a different target audience. Makes having a disc golf course here stick out even more.
- This could be fun. It could also be a safety hazard. That's for players to decide.

Impossible to recommend. Play elsewhere.

Pros:

9 baskets in the ground. Good signage.

Cons:

Terrible course design. There's a very strong likelihood that someone gets hit and hurt by an errant shot.

Other Thoughts:

This course is a liability lawsuit ready to happen, especially the first 4 holes. Hole 1's basket is just feet away from a parking lot entrance with players throwing blind from the tee. Hole 2 is wedged between the parking lot and a busy dog park. Hole 3 literally plays through a playground, over a walking path and over a baseball field. Hole 4 plays directly over spectator bleachers for the same ball field. It's only a matter of time before someone gets hurt and disc golf takes the rap for a truly horrible course design.

Pros:

The Rec Center did what it could with the space that it had. The course signage is nice and the pads, though tiny, are concrete and had good grip. There was ample parking is the Rec Center Lot but if there are youth baseball/softball games, I suspect this parking might not fall within the Pros.

#7 is a 290 ft shot that plays along a pond and is perhaps the best hole in terms of technical challenge for any player.

Cons:

I have to agree with Magictenor1, the design is bananas. The course is basically shoe-horned into the interstitial space between a softball field, a very small dog park, a soccer field and the very limited space around the recreation center itself. #1's Fairway is a narrow (~100 ft) grass strip between the main ingress road and the parking lot that requires a RHBH player to hyzer out over the road. Holes 2 & 3 are outright safety hazards. #2 requires a slight uphill shot that, depending on your handedness, either flys over the parking area and up towards soccer field and or over the dog park and walking path leading to the athletic fields. The basket is near a building (possibly concession stand) and fence encircling the soccer field. A poor shot may easily reach the children's outdoor play ground equipment. Oye. Hole #3, for LHBH is a hyzer over the softball field as is Hole #4. Hole #4 effectively runs parallel to the left field to home base line and has dense trees along the right side that encourages throwers to go over the field for a full flight. Hole 5 is a 75' wide fairway straight shot on a right to left slope. A throw to the right will land the residential neighbor's front yard and too far left may land on the sidewalk that connects different rec center features. Watch of walkers. Hole 6, a 163 ft downhill, was the least concerning shot on the course. Holes 8 & 9 basically throw next to one another in opposite directions with a slight slope toward the pond. 8's basket is near an exit to the indoor facilities so be aware of people exiting the building.

Other Thoughts:

Leave your high speed discs at home and make this a putter only outing. It is a beautiful setting and nice oppotunity to shape putter shots. The potential conflict with other users is real and high speed discs pose too great a risk to other rec center users to use it unless nobody is around.

Bizarre

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 1, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

Nice clean park. Restrooms. Good signs
Nice baskets and tee pads. Navigation and flow are good

Cons:

Ridiculous design. Number 1s fairway is a busy road. #2 throws over a dog park. #3 between the dog park and a field down a road. This continues. Only a few holes do not have issues

Other Thoughts:

Hard to rate this one lol. It has a lot of good features but the design is crazy. I played on a Friday afternoon about 215 so course and park not too busy. Still had to wait a couple times for cars and people. Course would be unplayable at a busy time. Ball fields walking path ,roads and dog park in Play.
