Fun with a variety of shots.

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 21, 2023 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Good signage, good cement tees, most holes are in the woods and can be technical. Challenging, must be accurate but not necessarily a long distance thrower on most holes.

Cons:

Can be muddy after rain. Some holes 2-3 are too short - I don't mind, but some may not like how short some are.

Other Thoughts:

Fun course to play.

Just a fun course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 4, 2021 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Technically challenging but not unfair
Plays fast even when busy
Fantastic Parks and Rec maintenance

Cons:

A little short
A few repetitive shots

Other Thoughts:

I just describe this course as fun. Technical enough to make it challenging but short enough to where things never spiral out of control. Sometimes you want an open course to just let loose, for all the other times Cedar Ridge is a go to course for me.

cedar Ridge 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 28, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

Very well marked, just look for the wood chipped path or inside the basket there is an arrow pointing you in the right direction! A little muddy right now in spots but we have had a lot of rain and it\'s really for the grass to be completely in. Nice concrete T boxes.

Cons:

Difficult, a lot of tunnel shots. Would be frustrating for beginners.

Other Thoughts:

Will be nice and shady when the weather gets a lot hotter.

The Perfect Mix

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 30, 2023 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Practice Basket. And the pretty much brand-new DD Veterans are a welcome upgrade

When it this course doesn't have wooded areas, it has elevation changes. When it doesn't have elevation changes, it has low ceiling shots. It never tries to do too much with one hole, but every hole does it's thing very well.

The tee signs are impeccable. The basket position is updated by a little yellow washer that was correct on every basket on my playthrough. It also directs you to the next tee on the sign so don't forget to check that.

Strong variance of distances. The course can be set pretty short, where everything is under 290', but several pins were in the 300'-400' range and 17 was in the excellent 459' pin!

Several greens are dangerous. As an example: I clanged off the front of the basket with my drive on 12, and rolled away to a distance where I missed my putt. 2, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10-12, 14, and 17 in certain pins all have some tough rollaway potential.

Most of the rough is pretty forgiving. There are exceptions, but for anything past hole 4, you're going to find your disc pretty quick and have a shot at a par save.

The parking lot is where the course starts and ends. It's a good perk when the course uses a good amount of the park.

This course wasn't very busy, and I highly doubt it gets that way. A person with experience on this course could get through it in under an hour. On my first playthrough it took me 10 minutes more than that.

Cons:

Several of the holes clearly favor RHBH players. It's not the worst thing, but it could get pretty annoying.

15, 16, and 18 are the definition of "bang average." If you have a decent skip shot there's nothing to fear from them.

Going even 2 feet into the rough on 1-4 will be a ridiculously tough par save. It's incredibly annoying, and it's a good thing that the rest of the course isn't like that.

10 and 11 are very short holes. While they do have major elevation change, they are both very short. Like, the short pins are both under 190' short.

The fairways of holes 8-12 are covered in small stones and roots that could really beat up the rims of your discs.

Other Thoughts:

Cedar Ridge eliminates most of the frustrating things about two other major wooded courses in KC (Wilbur Young and Down Under) with far better tee signs/pads, and far less brush. Just doesn't have the length of Black Hoof.

You hardly even notice that the course is fairly short because of how technical it is.

This is a well put together course. It's maintained, trimmed, and a lot of thought has been put into keeping things from being too cumbersome (covering an empty creek bed with rocks, etc.). Will definitely be back to hit at least par. (Update: It's 2024, and I am still yet to hit par.)

Amazing views on most tee locations 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 26, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

This place has everything an advanced player is looking for. Tight tree lines, water hazards, left fades, right fades, uphill and downhill action.

Every hole had a long cement tee pad and signs that are numbered and showed all possible hole locations and distances.

Would be cool in itself as a walking trail, the views were phenominal. The designer of this course deserves an A++

Cons:

To choose my proper throw I needed to walk each hole my first time playing to see where exactly the baskets were located. The first hole for example, all you see is a line of trees on both sides that progressively fade up and left, and you aren't exactly sure where you would aim without actually seeing the basket location.

Hole 4 was at a location wayyyy deeper than either on the map showed and is a major water hazard, but one heck of a view from the tee pad!

Other Thoughts:

This course will give you a workout!! Feels like you are on a hiking trail in a state park!!

Lots of woodchips and stuff throughout the wooded areas to make finding a disc easier. The coolest and most unique 18 holes that I have ever played. I would not take a beginner with me to play there, but that same person would have a blast appreciating all of the hole designs and the beauty of the game. Pictures on my phone can not do this place enough justice. It was phonemenal!

Fun little gem 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 29, 2021 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This is a really fun course. It has a variety of woods shots, up and down hills, and multiple pins on most holes. Yet, it still provides ways to attack the holes with both backhand and forehand drives. The elevation is also used wonderfully to both keep you honest and provide additional challenge on holes that would otherwise be boring.

Concrete tee pads have been installed, along with new Veteran baskets and a practice basket. There's also a field by the first tee and a soccer field not far away to practice drives, although not many holes require distance drivers. The parking lot is massive (shared with a water park), and there's a picnic shelter nearby. New tee signs are in that are some of the better signs in the area, as well as a helpful map by the first tee.

There are several par 4 pins, and even though they're not super long, they have some unique challenges. Those are on holes 4, 6, 14, and 17, and there's a permanent basket in each of those locations, and another basket rotating through the par 3 placements.

There are several scenic shots and manicured fairways. Holes 6 and 13 have raised pins, there's some rock formations on 3 and 5, and the water shot on hole 4 is both beautiful and daunting. The photos do not do this course justice at all. There are a handful of ace opportunities, but on holes that have other trouble lurking if you get too aggressive.

Cons:

There are plenty of opportunities to lose discs. The biggest opportunities are holes 2 and 17, which are fairly long and have some short trees you might want to throw over. However, a turned over disc could go deep in the woods and put other holes in danger. Hole 17 also has a headwind frequently. On the other holes, you could put a disc in the water on 4 or take some nasty kicks on some others.

The last 4 holes are all pretty boring to me, with no elevation, which is a big part of what makes the rest of the course great. Also, hole 7 is super awkward, with a low ceiling, fences, weird left-to-right shape, and rollaway potential. A few holes have multiple pins not visible from the tee, meaning you may need to run down the fairway to see where the basket is (8, 17, 18).

For professionals, this won't be a hard course. Only a few holes are over 300 feet, and some are under 200. There's not much room in the park to make holes longer, so several holes will remain pretty lackluster.

Drainage is pretty poor. The lake drains into a creek that runs through holes 7-11, so those holes are usually muddy. There's woodchips and a few bridges, but it's often not enough. Hole 4 also has some issues.

Other Thoughts:

This is a great supplement to the rest of the courses in Kansas City - it's easily the best woods course in the area.

Despite the fact that someone with experience here can take advantage of the many holes that aren't super difficult. But it still provides a great challenge for first-timers since so many holes look far longer than they really are. It also provides veterans a reward for learning the lines.

This course can be enjoyed by everyone, but it's best suited for players who have control of their drives, but won't be parking everything. That's certainly my skill set, so I have a fun time here whenever I come!

On the Ridge of Glory 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 4, 2020 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This course features great scenery in the form of its cedars, rock outcroppings, and pond. It also features excellent infrastructure: brand new, concrete tees, Dynamic Veteran baskets (white on the front 9, blue on the back 9, and a red practice basket next to the parking lot), tee signs showing pars and distances, multiple pin locations on most holes, benches, and trash cans. The course itself mostly features holes between 200-300 ft framed by trees (cedars earlier on in the course and later on, as well, with deciduous trees in the middle holes). There a couple holes that are slightly shorter but more wooded (ace runs) and a couple that are slightly more open but longer. There is quite a bit of elevation change (downhill holes, uphill holes, an across the valley shot). Scenic greens include hole 5 on a the edge of a rock ledge, hole 6 which has an elevated green made of large rocks, and hole 10 with a neat looking guardian tree. There is a good mix of left/straight/right fairways.

Cons:

A couple holes in the middle of the course can get pretty muddy. Hole 5's tee got moved back, but the tee sign still has the original, shorter distance. There is disc loss potential in the pond on 4 (It's downhill, 240 ft, so easily clearable, but you can always bail out left early if you're still not comfortable), all the cedars can grab discs fairly easily, and I think an extremely bad roll-away on 6 could make it to the pond as well. Navigation was a little difficult in spots my first time here, but there were new signs up making it better the last time I was here. There is a fairly long walk back to the parking lot from 18. When it's wet, there can be some slick spots.

Other Thoughts:

Most of the holes are wooded, but the lines you have to hit are definitely more than fair. There are a few holes with alternate locations that are par 4, emphasizing distance more. A lot of the rough had been cleaned up significantly when I played here my third time. The course was really in pristine condition. It's on site with Bonner's pool, so you could hit both activities in one trip! I guess that also gives the sport good visibility and potential to grow. This is my favorite course out of the 50+ I've played so far. Its terrain and landscape definitely make it stand out from other Kansas courses. The natural beauty combined with the hole design makes this course fun for players from rec through advanced levels.

**UPDATE**

New, more detailed tee signs (with correct distances) have been installed (along the occasional new pin position). A fair amount of brush has been cleared, too, to open things up a bit.

Other Thoughts:

Cedar Ridge DGC is one of the newest courses in the Kansas City area. Most of the holes are heavily wooded and very hilly. I played the course in November and conditions were perfect. Poison ivy and ticks were not a concern. There are holes where you could lose sight of a disc to a cedar tree. I traveled 45 minutes to play and it was well worth the experience. Cedar Ridge will teach you how to throw control shots in the woods. Huge shout-out to the designer and those who help maintain this course to be one of the best in the area.

Take Me to Your Cedar 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 13, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

Cedar Ridge DGC is a really cool course that has nice range of shots, that go from nice fundamental ace runs to lengthy and technical par 4 holes. The layout is not foolproof, but I made my way through with a minimal amount of searching. There is good elevation change on at least half of the holes, and many of them are lined with heavy tree populations. The brand new Dynamic Veteran baskets are great. Red practice target, white on the front nine and blue on the back nine. I liked that the course designers did a nice job avoiding other parts of the park where pedestrians will be likely to interfere.

The fun holes that have high birdie potential and very decent elevation changes include 4, 5, 7, 10 and 13. The layout I played had 8 holes that were 240' or under.
4 is the only hole that plays over water, in the form of a small pond at the bottom of a reasonably steep hill for Kansas. 3 and 5 are uphill holes that had prominent stone outcroppings in play. 10 and 12 are only 150' long, 10 is downhill and 12 is uphill. Each of them are home for numerous trees to be avoided off the tee.

The tougher holes will take nice throws to strategically set up approaches. Distance and accuracy become crucial. Hole 2 in the long pin location is a fun test. A downhill corridor cuts through low trees near the top, and into heavy canopy at the bottom of the hill. I had a good drive and my second shot felt great as it hit the line and dove toward the basket in the B position. Then it skipped off the bare ground at the bottom of the hill and over the barbed wire fence behind the target. At least I was able to take the penalty and still made the putt for a 4 to save par. 8 is a downhill lined with many trees to either side and a well protected pin in long position. Only a 300' par 3, but can deal extra strokes easily if you get off line. 14 has 3 pin positions, and the longest is a par 4. A hard dogleg right mid fairway, with the bend being in a low spot, and thick clusters of trees guarding the mid and long basket locations.

Cons:

The natural tees are nice and flat, but no concrete has been poured as of yet. Many of the short holes really don't need a run up on the drive, so tees are ok as long as the ground is dry.

No map posted, so I was turned around briefly a couple of times. When you finish hole 9, turn immediately to the right and walk back downhill to the 10th tee. 10 and 11 are to the right of the 9th fairway, before crossing the path to the 12th tee. I continued up the hill onto the paved walking path and was slightly lost for a couple of minutes.

Not an entry level course. Too tough for inexperienced players, but not exactly gold tier difficulty either. Thick rough can be punishing.

Other Thoughts:

For a shorter course, this one has quite a few tough throws through moderate to very heavy woods. Lines are usually fair but can be very demanding on several holes. Blind shots can make things tough, especially the first time playing here.

I played a par 57 layout, and was +3 (60) on the initial round at Cedar Ridge. Made my birdies on hole 5 and 15. I took a double bogey on hole 3 with a really poor drive and half hearted approaches leading to a two putt. I also took a frustrating bogey on 17 that was a 3 putt after a great drive and missing a 30' birdie attempt.

This course reminds me of Rosedale Down Under if it had a couple of longer holes sprinkled in. An excellent addition to the area, and a good compliment to the longer and more open Wyandotte County Park nearby.

More than a few blind shots.
