Pros:
This is a really fun course. It has a variety of woods shots, up and down hills, and multiple pins on most holes. Yet, it still provides ways to attack the holes with both backhand and forehand drives. The elevation is also used wonderfully to both keep you honest and provide additional challenge on holes that would otherwise be boring.
Concrete tee pads have been installed, along with new Veteran baskets and a practice basket. There's also a field by the first tee and a soccer field not far away to practice drives, although not many holes require distance drivers. The parking lot is massive (shared with a water park), and there's a picnic shelter nearby. New tee signs are in that are some of the better signs in the area, as well as a helpful map by the first tee.
There are several par 4 pins, and even though they're not super long, they have some unique challenges. Those are on holes 4, 6, 14, and 17, and there's a permanent basket in each of those locations, and another basket rotating through the par 3 placements.
There are several scenic shots and manicured fairways. Holes 6 and 13 have raised pins, there's some rock formations on 3 and 5, and the water shot on hole 4 is both beautiful and daunting. The photos do not do this course justice at all. There are a handful of ace opportunities, but on holes that have other trouble lurking if you get too aggressive.
Cons:
There are plenty of opportunities to lose discs. The biggest opportunities are holes 2 and 17, which are fairly long and have some short trees you might want to throw over. However, a turned over disc could go deep in the woods and put other holes in danger. Hole 17 also has a headwind frequently. On the other holes, you could put a disc in the water on 4 or take some nasty kicks on some others.
The last 4 holes are all pretty boring to me, with no elevation, which is a big part of what makes the rest of the course great. Also, hole 7 is super awkward, with a low ceiling, fences, weird left-to-right shape, and rollaway potential. A few holes have multiple pins not visible from the tee, meaning you may need to run down the fairway to see where the basket is (8, 17, 18).
For professionals, this won't be a hard course. Only a few holes are over 300 feet, and some are under 200. There's not much room in the park to make holes longer, so several holes will remain pretty lackluster.
Drainage is pretty poor. The lake drains into a creek that runs through holes 7-11, so those holes are usually muddy. There's woodchips and a few bridges, but it's often not enough. Hole 4 also has some issues.
Other Thoughts:
This is a great supplement to the rest of the courses in Kansas City - it's easily the best woods course in the area.
Despite the fact that someone with experience here can take advantage of the many holes that aren't super difficult. But it still provides a great challenge for first-timers since so many holes look far longer than they really are. It also provides veterans a reward for learning the lines.
This course can be enjoyed by everyone, but it's best suited for players who have control of their drives, but won't be parking everything. That's certainly my skill set, so I have a fun time here whenever I come!
