Left Desiring More at Michihistrigan

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 20, 2024 Played the course:once

Pros:

- pond water hazards incorporated on several holes
- cool tunnel shot on hole 1
- challenging length
- bathrooms in bar when open
- most navigation is pretty intuitive
- course seems fairly well maintained

Cons:

- currently no tee signs
- gravel tees are just ok
- baskets are temporary style with very thin chains
- some very thick rough throughout the course
- limited obstacles throughout middle of course
- difficulty mostly seems focused on length rather than much technical skill
- limited amenities: no practice basket, garbage, benches
- almost entirely flat
- some of the layout could interfere with other activities if this area is busy
- no navigation aids
- due to no tee signs, unclear which direction to throw off tee in several places
- long walks between several holes

Other Thoughts:

Eagle's Ridge is a brand new 9 hole course about midway on the drive between Grand Marais and Escanaba, touted as the UP's most difficult niner. It is free and located at Byce's Michihistrigan Campground. Well, is it the most difficult? I don't know, because I haven't played all of the UP's niners. Once DFrah plays it, he should be able to give us a firm assessment! In the meantime, I can say that the majority of the difficulty here is just from making the holes long - after hole 1, there is hardly anything under 400 feet. I don't mind long holes, but a lot of these are just long without much technical challenge. I don't find this particularly difficult OR interesting, and this is the biggest reason for my lower score on this course. There just isn't much in the way of technical elements besides the water hazards and it feels very flat, open, and repetitive. There is a lot more to difficult disc golf than wide open long holes.

Also, what the heck is a Michihistrigan? I didn't see anything on their website explaining it, perhaps a Yooper knows and will tell me some day. This name is only going to make it harder for people to remember what the heck the place is called :).

I recommend parking in the gravel lot for the dispensary next to the campground for easy access to hole 1. Hole 1 is a really cool tunnel shot through trees and both the shortest and tightest hole on the course. Holes 2-5, while incorporating water hazards, are pretty dull and open otherwise. The last few holes are admittedly more interesting with a bit more of a cut fairway through trees and some level of technical intrigue. Unfortunately for most of this course, it's about how hard you can throw with less focus placed on accuracy or the ability to throw different shot types.

Watch out for the posted private property to the right of hole 4, which is very easy to drift in to. Hole 4 is pretty wide open but has some challenges - if you throw too far, there are 2 different ponds you could end up in, and you are throwing right by the sand volleyball court. It's unclear if this is ever in use, but this didn't seem like the best layout.

Hole 5 does have a really nice water carry over one of the ponds. It's not particularly long or risky since the tee is right at the edge of the pond, but it adds to the fun factor.

The highlight of this course really is the water hazards, which come into play on at least 4 of the 9 holes (2, 4, 5, and 9 for sure). There ARE trees on the fairways on several holes but they tended to be shorter evergreens and the course still felt quite open - perhaps more than pictures indicate. The water hazards add some challenging elements, though, and made me tempted to bump this up to a 2.5. However, with the current infrastructure of no tee signs, no navigation aids, lackluster baskets, weeds growing in the gravel tees, and just generally not being sure which way to throw - there are many improvements that could be made here.

There are long walks between several holes, notably from 6-9. Hole 9 also ends quite a distance away from the start of the course which is always a pet peeve of mine. This way of laying out courses is just unnecessary and frustrating.

Overall, this is not a bad course, but also not one I found very fun. I stopped here since the course had no pictures and hadn't been reviewed. If you are taking MI-77 between Grand Marais and either Manistique or Escanaba, or if you are taking US-2 east/west, this course is relatively convenient to stop at. I don't think I would make the effort to come again, and this will take you longer than most niners given it is 4000 ft - potentially an hour. However, it is a serviceable course if length is your thing.
