Fairview’s view is more than fair

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 26, 2024 Played the course:once

Pros:

Nestled in a residential area in west Columbia, the Fairview Park course is a fantastic addition for disc golf novices and more experienced throwers seeking to increase their ace count.

Most of the holes are fairly open with a few trees around the edges, so newbies will be able to throw without facing many obstacles. The first hole is only 135 feet and slightly downhill so it's a pleasant warm-up and potential ace run at the beginning.

There's a bit of variety thrown in with Hole #4, which is the only heavily wooded hole on the course, but it's also the shortest at 105 feet.

The course includes some nice amenities, including generously sized concrete teepads, a few benches, a wooden bridge on Hole #4, brand-new Discatchers and a parking lot right next to Hole #1.

The scenery at Fairview is definitely better than fair – the course includes grassy lawns, nicely-mulched areas and lovely foliage.

Cons:

The boundaries on a couple holes are of thicker rough, so wayward shots there could end up where it will be unpleasant to retrieve one's discs.

Hole #5 is probably the hole that feels slightly out of place with the pitch-n-putt format. It's the longest hole at 245 feet and a little uphill.

Several of the fairways are a little close to another hole. I found myself keeping an eye out for the other groups on the course while throwing.

The parking lot is near the first hole but it's not huge and is located at the end of a cul-de-sac.

Other Thoughts:

Fairview appears to get a lot of quick-round plays. When Mrs. Cerealman and I visited the course, we noted several users who were carrying a couple discs and playing multiple rounds rapidly.

The course is quite simple and will be a birdie-fest for disc golfers with experience. My wife doesn't throw often and she easily managed par on six of the nine holes.

While beginner-friendly Fairview Park fits the intended audience well, it's a far cry from the majestic Harmony Bends nearby and is therefore rated accordingly.

A Fun Course For Players At All Levels

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 26, 2024 Played the course:once

Pros:

Fairview Park is maintained by the City of Columbia Parks Department. Prior to the year 2024, the Columbia Parks Department had installed 4 public courses that featured 18 holes, including a course known as Harmony Bends, which is rated as the top rated course in the United States. In the early spring of 2024, the Columbia Parks Department opened the 9 hole course in Fairview Park. Fairview Park is located in a residential area of the city, on the west side of the city. In addition to the 9 hole disc golf course, the park also features a soccer field. The disc golf course features a large sign with a map and displays the locations of the tees, basket locations, and distances. Each tee is concrete and of adequate length. Each fairway is short in distance, which makes this entire course very beginner friendly, and which will also be appealing to over the age of 50 players, players who are not blessed with strong throwing arms or great technique. The longest fairway at this course is 237 feet in length, which makes this course very beginner, very inexperienced, and very elderly player friendly. Experienced players who have the ability to play an 18 hole course and score below par or less than 5 above par can enjoy this course as a practice putting and approaching course, or as a simple course where the player has a chance of an ace throw at every hole. In my opinion, there is little to no risk of losing a disc at this course. With the exception of hole 4, all of the fairways are grass, which makes this a course that can be played 12 months of the year. Hole 4 is a short but heavily wooded fairway, but there is mulch on the fairway which will make this hole playable throughout the year while other heavily wooded courses in central Missouri may be slick and muddy during the winter and early spring months. This course features no water hazards.

Cons:

None

Other Thoughts:

This course is a great addition to the City of Columbia.
