A home for beginners

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 15, 2023 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

In a city with a more prominent championship disc golf course nearby, the Forest Home Church finds its niche in Jonesboro as a solid nine-hole course for beginners that combines several wooded holes with wide open drives and a touch of elevation thrown in.

The distances are perfect for novices, as the holes average just over 200 feet and the longest hole is shy of 300 feet. More experienced players will see every hole as a potential ace run, but even for amateurs, downhill open holes like Hole #5 provide ace-able opportunities.

There isn't much rough to contend with, though wayward throws on the downhill holes can find an undesirable patch of undergrowth.

Navigation seemed straight forward, though the previous reviewer did mention the one area where a first-time user might get stuck. After Hole #8, walk up the hill past the Hole #4 teepad and look left for a path into the woods.

The signage is top-notch with a large numeral along with a map and the distance.

It appears from the DGCR photos that the original Hole #1 was axed, which brought the building into play. The original Hole #2 is now the start of the course, which seems like a good change. The original Hole #6 was also axed, which played very closely to the parking lot. One user said they had put several discs onto the roof of the church on those holes. Oops! Fortunately, those two holes were discarded and two open holes across the field were added, which improved the flow and safety issues.

Note that the course is closed on Sunday morning and during special church events. It's available for play from dawn to dusk at all other times.

Cons:

The teepads are a little rough. Some of the rubber pads aren't level. The Hole #8 teepad slopes down in the front, which can be tricky to maneuver. The teepad areas are actually two rubber mats pushed together, and that seam between the pads caused me some distraction in my run-ups. Of course, with the short holes, a standstill approach can work.

The holes in the woods (Holes #1-#3 and Hole #9) are prone to some muddiness, both on the fairways and on the paths between holes. These areas seem especially susceptible to water run-off and wet conditions as they're positioned just below the hill adjoining the parking lot.

Holes #4 through #7 lack variety as they simply cross the open grassy field. The two even holes, which finish with the basket on the slope of the hill, and the two odd holes are nearly facsimiles of each other.

Other Thoughts:

The Forest Home Church is definitely a dream for the baggers seeking a quick score. With fairly-open, short holes, you can knock this fun course out in 15 minutes if you want to. In fact, finding out where to park might be the biggest challenge. From the entrance in front of the church off Ritter Drive, proceed clockwise around the church until the parking lot ends and you'll be next to Hole #1.

Looking good 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 8, 2022 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Clear signage

Mowed frequently

Convenient location

Layout encourages a variety of tee shots

Short 9 hole layout with a mixture of terrain is perfect for beginners, ideal practice for intermediate players.

Cons:

Due to the shorter holes, some expert players who enjoy throwing bombs off every tee will find this course lacking, especially holes 1-4. Consider playing when it's windy out if you want a tougher challenge, it makes a big difference here!

Course can get soggy, I recommend not playing until 24 hours after heavy rains have stopped.

Other Thoughts:

This course has gone through lots of improvements since the older reviews here.

One helpful sign to add would be reaching the hole 9 tee after the hole 8 basket. To get there, begin walking up the hill (hole 5 fairway) and take the second trail on the left through the trees.

Quick Play But Nice Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 12, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

When I pulled into the Forest Home Church lot , I must have been turned around some , because after I parked , I wasn't sure where to start on this 9 hole course . I like to survey a course a bit before I throw my first drive so I walked around a little before starting .I don't always review brand new courses for fear that as more are added to them , then my review might scare someone off . The course sits on the sides and back end of the church grounds . If you look over the backyard of the church while walking the grounds , there is a large length of bushes that look like they end the property of the church , but they do not . Read this , because you will miss hole #3 or have to backtrack to play it . There already looks to have been improvements to the course even since this course originated and was added to DG Course Review in 2018 . They have replaced the natural grass with rubber mats for the holes . They also boast brand new yellow Discatcher baskets . This course does not have any signage , but maybe that will come at a later date , What I was concerned about was that without signs and no online map or kiosk ( I print a map before I go to every course if there is one online ) . there are going to be disc golf enthusiasts , locals and travelers wandering the grounds like zombies looking for the pattern to the holes . I never saw the first mat , but it must have been at the side closest to the street ( Ritter ) as you pull into the first driveway of the lot . The church grounds are well taken care of and the church looks very nice from the outside . What a great way to feature it and welcome the curious by inviting them for a look-see with 9 quick holes of disc golf . Some might stick around to ask questions about the church and its mission . Anyway , I kind of safaried the first hole , but found the pad for hole #2 a top of the hill shot down to the edge of the bush line . There are no obstructions to hit on 2 or 3 , so other than battling some wind , it's just you and the basket . #3 tee can be missed easily ( I did and had to backtrack ) . If you make an immediate left and leave where you think the church grounds end , you will find some extra land and another rubber tee pointing to a basket that keeps that bush line to its right and subdivision yards way off to the left . These holes are all pretty short so there is little chance of shanking one into the trees or a yard . . After 3 , #4's tee is to its immediate right and throws to a basket that sits partially up the hill When you finish this hole , you walk down the hill to the #5 tee that was cleared out of the woods and throws up and out in the same direction as #4's drive was . This basket sits a little left and you could clip a tree on your drive if you aren't paying attention ( newbie ! ) . #6 Tee sits on top of the hill to the right of the #5 basket and you throw right to left downhill into an opening back into the woods to a basket that sits on the right . #7's tee is behind it . You cross a little bridge ( it was a little muddy here ) and throw to a clearing in the far back of the property . It has some fairway obstacles for you to have to avoid . #8 is also in the back of the property and to the left of the #7 basket It is to a basket kind of tucked into the woods a little , but unless you throw low and hit a stump or some brush , you can pick up an easy bird since it is a short straight toss . I turned left and walked the bridge and went up the far side of the property to the last hole which sits between the church and a neighboring house . You walk right past the basket you are going to toss to , up a small embankment to the tee . You proceed to throw a short downhill ace run to the basket sitting below . I am not sure of these hole numbers , but I am pretty sure of the flow of the course . This is a quick play and a brand new and possible evolving addition to the Jonesboro disc golf community . A great starter course for newbies and fantastic for casuals , even for a church social to encourage community spirit . Disc Risk is about 0 . No heavy brush on this course , so as long as you don't forget and leave you putter behind in the basket , you should walk away with the same amount of discs that you brought . Not any challenge here but a fun fast play . Some elevation is featured on this course. Signature hole would be #6 , the downhill right to left into the woods .

Cons:

#1 Signage . I know that nothing can be done with the shortness of the course as the disc gold course utilizes what looks like most of the back and sides , but starting out and knowing where to go can be confusing . Please put an online map up . I'm sure it will be forthcoming . What would really be nice is a kiosk at the start . I am not going to criticize further since the course is so new .

Other Thoughts:

What a great idea ! A newer church in a subdivision kind of hidden in the community finds a way to introduce itself by creating a disc golf course . It's fast , easy and great for the kids , the churchgoers , the neighbors , or even the weary travelers wanting to stretch their legs , since it is just minutes off of I-555.They open the grounds and welcome all anytime , but ask that you respect them by not playing Sunday mornings or Wednesday evenings when they have service . Thank you , Forest Home Church , for giving me the opportunity to play your new course .

Needs signage and better flow 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 28, 2018 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

The course is on a church property right off the freeway. As with most church properties you are really close to the building.
Good use of the hill and sidewalk for holes 1 & 6-9.

Hole 1 is a short downhill shot, needs to be straight to avoid some tall trees and the church building

All the holes are a great introduction to the sport and have varied lines beginners can learn to throw (FH and BH).

Two holes are around 250 - 270 so for putter rounds you do get to at least throw.

Houses near church do not come into play as they are set far back and up a hill.

Cons:

> Hole 1 is very tight for a beginner shot between the building and large trees. Wind can easily push discs into the building from the elevated pad.
> Signage will be helpful once installed.
> I found 9 baskets but only 8 pads so played the 250 up hill hole twice.
> Seems like it could be hazardous when raining as part of the course is a drainage pond.

Other Thoughts:

Great location off the freeway as I was driving from Florida to the West coast. Perfect for a 15 min break, I played with my putter and flip-flops.
