ELEVATE your DG game! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 18, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

Incredible use of elevation throughout the course. From basket placement to hole layout, be prepared to climb. The course was short but very technical. Good signage. Decent dirt tees. Great quality baskets.

Cons:

It would have been nice to have concrete tee pads to keep the mud down. There were a handful of baskets you can't see from the tee pads. That makes this course very unfriendly for first-timers.

Other Thoughts:

It was really hard to find the course. You basically have to drive through the driveway of a large yellow house to get to the parking lot. It's a bit of a walk in to get to hole one. You'll see a practice basket first. However, once you get there, it was an incredibly unique PNW disc golf experience.

Putter Challenge! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 28, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Incredibly technical course. Bring your placement game!
-Scenic holes with multiple elevation changes.
-Pleasant setting. Feels like you're in the (ahem) wilderness.
-Extremely challenging pin locations. Must be 6-8 perched precariously on mounds or hills. Laying up is often the prudent course of action.

Cons:

-Biggest one was the lack of clearly marked tee pads. For the most part each hole has a worn patch that one can assume is the pad, but it's not always clear.
-Lack of risk vs. reward. Most of the holes offer 2 options: Safe or Suicide. Of course I've only played it once so I probably didn't see those "high risk/high reward" lines.
-Distance, I guess. Yes this is a very short course. That is NOT to say an easy round. Personally I shot a 58 on my first round and felt like I survived it.

Other Thoughts:

One of the most memorable courses I've played. You will not forget #18, with the EXTREME downhill dogleg left. I thought I'd parked it, only to find out I'd come up 30 feet short and was destined to roll out and finish with a 4. Can't wait to try it again.

Needs a few good improvements 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 18, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

Very physically challenging with some significant elevation changes. Technical finesse is required for many of the holes.

Cons:

Not laid out well. Got lost between holes every now and then. Hard to identify tee pads. Felt more like a nature hike scavenger hunt and less like disc golf.

Other Thoughts:

Improvements that could be used are rubber tee boxes, hole information and layout at each tee box, better directions between holes and some stairs on a couple of holes. Those looking to play this course, I recommend good hiking boots or something with cleats to tackle some of the hills.

Great in the future 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 18, 2014 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Some interesting holes with big elevation changes. The layout is good, no big walks except the one into the course. The course is challenging, with a few blind throws. 18 is a great finish with its huge downhill dogleg left. Next tee signs are helpful. Parking lot is a decent size and has a washroom. High quality targets.

Cons:

Dirt tee boxes are unclear, uneven and rooty on multiple holes. Some signage out on the road would be greatly appreciated. There was some circa 1970 buried garbage being uncovered on hole 3 I think. Quite a few really short holes.

Other Thoughts:

No walk in the park, bring proper footwear. Looking forward to coming back as this course has some great potential.

PNW Jungle Golf! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 9, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

Lush, forested setting. Challenging terrain without feeling like it's "unfair".Super-bling gold plated basket on #1 was a hilarious surprise (oops, spoiler). The next tee signs were very helpful.

Cons:

Some uncertainty as to where the actual tee pad was on some holes. The challenging terrain could be considered a con if you arrived expecting a walk in a city park.

Other Thoughts:

It is a beautiful wilderness area with good quality baskets and some thoughtful fairways. If you arrive looking for these attributes and not a city park style course, you will not be disappointed. We had a terrific time and will play here again when next in the area as it is a nice compliment to the more refined courses in the area.

Great scenery, challenging pin placement thru the trees. At least two possible ace holes with a good mid shot.

Cons:

No maps/distance. Poorly marked. Unless you're rocking hiking boots don't go.

Other Thoughts:

Way out in the bush. I'd recommend personal protection for bears or big cats. It was fun but next time I'm definitely bringing something with a little more uhhp than a pocket knife.

Mountain Goats only! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 6, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

It's a disc golf course! Not easy unless you play very conservatively...maybe midrange and putters only. Course layout is definitely fun.

Cons:

Couple of holes have dangerous steep slopes. If you aren't wearing hiking boots this could cause you some serious injury. #2 is a fun hole but steep climb upto (good ace hole). #18 recently changed but still steep decline...not safe for us older dudes.

Other Thoughts:

Someone is doing some work on this course and it will get better and better. My playing partner considers this his most fun place to play.

Not very fair 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 26, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Someone obviously took a lot of time to cut down a bunch of trees to make these "holes." There are a few really interesting shots out there. Most notably number 18 is a really crazy hyzer dump shot. You play your disc about 100 feet in front of you, and then let it faaaaade down a hill to a pin position a good 75' below the "tee pad." Bring your accuracy!

Cons:

Unfortunately, I don't think I'll be coming back here anytime soon. The course has no facilities of any kind, no signs, no real tee pads, no bathrooms.... really, not much of anything.

It really feels like they kind of forced this course to happen, because the terrain is very steep and densely wooded and really doesn't lend itself to disc golf very well. Even though there are "fairways," they are often only a few feet wide. Many of the holes are laid out so that they can't be deuced, and virtually everyone will just take a 3. Just bad hole design. I know there are probably people who really like this place and have worked on it, but there is a lot to do before this is even a decent course. The lack of signage and no clearly marked tee pads were my biggest frustrations.

Other Thoughts:

If you go, go ready to hike, because its steeep! And don't bother bringing drivers. The holes are almost all very short. No need for anything except a few putters and mids.

Good hike and isolated! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 30, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- Isolated environment. The course is located outside of Poulsbo on a rural road.
- Challenging! Most of your shots are obscured by trees and branches. There are 3 or 4 "L" shaped holes that will test your marksmanship.
- Variation. The first few holes will give you an idea of how varied the course is. Hole 1 will have you shooting up a steep hill. Hole 2 and 3 are also uphill but each hole has a different feel to it, one will have you shooting around trees while another will have you shooting over a little valley.
- Hole 18. I thought this hole was fantastic! A long "L" shaped hole with a steep left turn (down a big hill). The shots seem very majestic coming off this approach.
- Very little foot traffic. We did not see another player at the course while we were here.

Cons:

- You have to pay attention to the directions listed on the front page of the Fredericksen description on this site or you will drive right by it. There are no signs marking the park from the main road.
- Litter. No garbage bags at the holes and several players decided to not carry their trash out with them.
- Horrible approaches / tee boxes. Several of the holes had no set approaches, just a worn spot on the path. You will need to watch your footing on some of the "tee boxes" as little roots and stumps are sticking out.
- Hole maps at the approaches would be great. There are a few holes where you come upon a 4 way intersection and you are not sure which way to shoot.
- Prepare to play pinball! Lots of trees and narrow fairways so make each shot count!
- Very muddy at the start and end of the course.
- Watch your step! Steep fairways, especially at the beginning of the course. Lots of places to accidentally fall.

Other Thoughts:

Most of the holes here are fairly short -- not many chances to really let anything fly a long distance. However, with the way the holes are laid out, the course still remains challenging with the amount of trees, vegetation, stumps, logs, valleys and hills strewn throughout. The tee boxes (approaches) need some major work and a few more signs posted to assist with basket direction would greatly improve this course. Not as clean, fun or organized as the other local courses (NAD, Fairgrounds, Bud Pell). Fredericksen is a decent alternative if you are looking for a course to test your finesse and marksmanship.

A very enjoyable 18 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 14, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is a very technical course. Most of the holes are short, but there's enough variation in hole length and enough trees to mess up your line that the distance is good. I almost want to call the longer holes a con just because you have to have a cannon that can throw a perfect line to get a birdie look, but they add to the enjoyment of the course because it keeps you from being lulled into a nice, easy par or birdie run. Every time I started to feel good about myself I'd hit a tree or a long hole. I like that challenge, so it's a pro.

The signage was ample, which made navigation very easy.

I also enjoyed how isolated the course was from everything. You could barely hear the traffic out in Poulsbo, and I didn't see another golfer on the course. This was probably due to the rain and the time of day.

One more thing I can't forget: They have benches scattered throughout the course, and every teepad has sign hangers.

Cons:

There was one homemade basket that made the least pleasurable tone I've ever heard. It looked like they threw $5 worth of materials together and called it a target. It would have been better if they'd just used a pole on that hole until they could raise enough money to buy a new basket.

This course felt very lefty friendly. There were a few RHBH holes, but the majority were right turning holes... Including one that turned right incredibly hard shortly after the teepad. That's not a con. I just hadn't ever seen it before.

The teepads were difficult to distinguish. Some of them were marked by logs, but the majority were only found by looking for worn in areas somewhere in the vicinity of the tee sign.

The trash. Come on. I've figured out by now that far too many disc golfers have zero respect for the land that they're playing on, but it still pisses me off every time. So there aren't trash cans. It's a wilderness course. Pack it out. You had room for it full, so why can't you handle the weight when it's empty?

Other Thoughts:

The first time I went here they had the whole thing shut down because of fire season. If it wasn't for all of the other great Kitsap area courses, I would have completely wasted a ferry trip. But Kitsap has some of the best courses in the state. I'm not sure why that is, but I love every course I've played over there so far. Maybe it's because they have land available that's bigger than the plot that North Park sits on? Regardless, the area is always worth the trip. I would easily put two of their courses in my top 5 courses played.

The hike back to the first tee really adds to the experience as well. The only thing I would change would be some extra signs on the teepads. At least give us an idea of the basket location and/or distance. You get lulled into a sense of security with the short/visible pins, and then hit a long hole. I like that as a setup, but for a first timer it gets irritating when you have to walk most of the way to the pin to figure out where it lies. Just laminate a picture with distances on it.

Frederickson DGC 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 18, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-Well maintained course, you can tell they really keep up on the course.
-Good course layout, a lot of the holes aren't too terribly long, making it great for beginners or people working more on their mid-range game
-Good signage on where to go, I always knew where the next hole would be
-Its in a great location, not a whole lot of hustle and bustle in the area making it a very relaxing place to play

Cons:

-The tees could use a little work, ideally i'd like to see some concrete tees put in, but even some gravel to clearly define the tee box would be useful
-Seeing a sign at the tee with a picture of the hole layout would be helpful, although with most of the holes pretty short its not vital
-Unfortunately, this course will probably be almost unplayable in WA's rainy weather due to all the mud and inclines

Other Thoughts:

-I really enjoyed this course a lot. The layout was good, it's a great course for an entry level disc golfer, and its being upkept really well. I think this course has great potential and i will definitely be returning.
-A lot of the fairways are very narrow, and trees on the holes love to block shots, so for some thats a big downside. I think it adds to the challenge a bit and is only frustrating on a couple of holes.

Wooded 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 28, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course could be a gem one day if they make some of the holes a little less narrow. Playing in the Pacific NW, a lot of people are used to that and it makes you a lot better but some of the holes are a little unrealistic. I loved the up and down nature of the landscape and you'll get a great exercise just walking through this course.

Cons:

Tee boxes aren't the easiest to find but luckily I played with someone who's played it multiple times. I assume they are constantly upgrading this course, so I know that will improve. Trees aren't that big of a deal but when you have a long hole with almost no passage for your shots, you aren't going to enjoy the hole. This happens about 3 or 4 times during the 18 holes.

Other Thoughts:

Beautiful hike/game to enjoy and this course has a great future. Played on vacation up in Seattle and would definitely return in the future to hopefully see some progress.

Fredericksen DGC 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Dec 19, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

As you come close to the course you find yourself pulling in to what appears to be a driveway next to a beautiful home. As you continue a bit on the gravel road it opens up to a parking lot where you see a kiosk directing you towards the discgolf course. I went with a friend who was familiar with the course which was huge because even though it was easy to get to it was just as easy to overshoot the entrance due to lack of signs clearly showing "Disc Golf Course."

That being said, once there I was delighted with what I saw. A beautiful northwest course and great addition to the other quality courses nearbye.

Once you follow the hiking trail for about a quarter mile winding down and then back up to tee 1 you find yourself throwing straight uphill. The next few holes have you throwing and then crossing small ravines to targets that are above or below the tees. The majority of holes from about 5 on have much less elevation changes but are equally as enjoyable. Fairways are tight with a mixture of low and high ceiling shots allowing for the most part multiple approaches with the exception of a few. The course has a mixture of straight on shots to doglegs left and right. Enough variety to appeal to everyone. The fact that you are isolated from everyone because of the hike into the hills makes it very quiet and relaxing with little to no one around. The evergreens and ferns surrounding this lush forest allow for wildlife and plantlife to grow abundantly, making this place truly special.

Baskets are great and the red signs with arrows pointing dgers toward the next hole is very helpful as without them it would be quite difficult.

Cons:

Because this course is fairly new and located high up in the hills I find the tee pads passable but not much more then that. Gravel or cement would really improve this course along with quality tee signs. The holes on this course are short to very short but, funny enough it seems to work here. The lines although given can be quite challenging at times but still always gives a chance for an ace. Distance in this case didn't seem to bother me as the neighboring courses seem to be a lot longer making this course a nice change of pace.

Eventually, I know that the wonderful people who installed and maintain this course will make adjustments as they see fit regarding maintenance, lengthening of holes, and signage.

Other Thoughts:

What makes this course great is that it is a true nature course that allows one to get outdoors and enjoy a great workout. Although it is a hike to play the whole course, I was able to play Van Zee, Kitsap Fairgrounds, and then Fredericksen and still want more. It is a great course to learn on and the local scene seems to really have their act together. I always enjoy playing rounds on this side of the sound and am excited to make it back!

From a course worker 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 9, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Fredericksen disc golf course is one that will give you a workout both physically and for improving your game. The first 4 holes are really up and down, but if you can get past the physical challenge, hole 5 levels out and the rest of the course has less elevation change in each hole, though there might be some change between holes.
You can use your whole range of finesse shots on this course, though your long drive won't be necessary, yet. (see below) I use backhand, forehand, thumber, hammerthrows and all kinds of flicks and dinks to get around trees and between tight spots. Hole #12 is narrow with all kinds of brush lining the way - stay leftish. Hole #13 has a "tree wall" to the left so stay right. And #14 is a right angle to the right - very fun. Hole #15 is called the hallway because while it is short, it is only about 6-8 feet wide most of the way, and downed logs take rollers out of play. Each hole has its own character lends spice to this course. It's also a very picturesque and quiet course.

Cons:

It's a short course.
Number 9 has unexpected water issues right now - take your waders.
There are still a number of holes that could use some clearing. Lots of opportunity to lose a disc.

Other Thoughts:

I have personally done some of the work up there with clearing and setting baskets and tee placements. It is definitely a work in progress, but our people are adding things all the time. Soon to come are score cards and course maps at the kiosk as you begin your walk into the first tee.
We are also toying with an alternate #9 that could include a very long tee shot, but that will take some doing. Also, we recently lengthened holes 5,6,7, and 16 and made the course 100-200 feet longer. For this course that is significant. There are all kinds of possibilities out there and we'll continue to make improvements. The more play we get out there and the more input, the better we can all make it. Have fun, and let fly!

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 15, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Has a lot of potential there are a lot of clever holes making good use of the natural terrain as hazards and features of the course. This is obviously a young course with much work to be done that in no way means it is not ready to be played on actually it is what the course needs as the fairways will be more established the more it gets played.

Cons:

the brush on both sides of the fairways is still pretty thck but is being cleared little by little as there are many piles of debris(which are a good place to lose a disc) The sign about the agressive ground wasps was a little discouraging although i did not encounter any myself the terrain needs to be explored and tamed in some areas

Other Thoughts:

This course is a beautiful location and provides for much wilderness interaction and has many possibilities for expantion and variations as there is ample room for alternate pin and or tee locations

WARNING! This Course Is Not Handicapped Accessible! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 26, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Don't bring your friend in his wheelchair. He's not going to get through this course. I'm not sure a mountain goat could get through this course. Like the previous reviewer noted, by the time you walk the slightly, uphill 1/4 mile to get to the first hole, you're already gassed. And then you peer straight up the hill with no basket in sight and a trail leading up the hill with switchbacks!! But this is one of the most unique disc golf courses that I've ever played. It's very short (most holes are 140-180 feet, I would guess). But there are some great throws to be made here. A couple of my favorites were # 2. It's a short little throw across a gully with the basket maybe standing 20 feeter higher than the teepad. # 17 is a nasty little hole. It's a slight anhyser, maybe180 feet to a basket guarded by a few trees. The problem here is if your disc sails wide left, you are going on a major hike down into a deep gully. And by the time you get to # 17 on this course, you're majorly spent and are in no mind to spend time going down there looking for your disc and then slowly trudging back up the steep hillside.
And then there's # 18. It's longer, (maybe 200' with a double break, with many trees in the way and almost straight downhill with some tough-love rough on both sides but especially on the left.
The course has brand new baskets with the numbers on them. Thank you for the numbers. There's no tee signs as of yet. But it's easy to navigate with little red arrows pointing the way. The teepads are natural and need some work. More on them later. At present, even with all the clearing work that has been done, if you find yourself off the fairway, it's easy to bogie most any hole. With an accurate throw, birdies are easy to be had. One of my favorite things about this course is the design. It's fair. There's always a flightpath to pick. It might be narrow but if you can hit your line, you'll get through and then be rewarded with the bird.

Cons:

I would like to see the pads on the uphill throws leveled out flat. I hate teeing off uphill while negotiating an uphill teepad. The course is currently very thick off the fairways but if this course gets enough play, players will break it off and stomp it down. But I'm not sure with it's isolated location if this course will ever get that much play. The1/4 hike in is a pain and at least, the 1/4 hike out when you're dog tired is downhill. I played the course alone and did spend a fair amount of time looking for my discs. Luckily, I was able to find each of them. I also thought there was a lefty bias here with more anhyser throws for a righty back handed thrower.

Other Thoughts:

If I were to play this course on a regular basis, I would always bring my brush cutter. You could cut things here forever. The designer(s) have cut many trees and left the cut logs lying on every hole. Hopefully, they will be used to shore up the paths, teeboxs and other areas. I don't this course would be too enjoyable in the real wet weather. I wonder about erosion being a problem. Many of those cut logs could be used to prevent such erosion.

If you want to crank out long, beautiful drives, skip Fredrickson and go play somewhere else. But if you want a truely, unique Northwest forrest experience, want to get a little workout in and like short, technical throws then you'll probably really enjoy this course. I know I did.

Tougher than you think 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 12, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Fredericksen DGC is easy to find with the directions given online and once you get into the small parking lot you walk down a bunch of stairs and take a 1/4 mile uphill walk until you reach hole one. Now that you are at hole one and tired from the walk getting here you throw straight up a very steep hill for a very tough first shot. Hole two then throws across a little valley, a short but very fun shot and another big uphill walk. By the time you get into the rest of the front nine the course gets a little flatter but still elevation is some what in play. The middle holes are a good string of left to right doglegs with very tight technical fairways. Watch out when you get to hole seventeen, this is another anhyzer for a right handed back hand player and if you go left your disc is off the cliff and most likely gone forever. Hole eighteen is a double break, steep downgrade hole that is challenging and a lot of fun, probably the signature hole. First you have to stay left and then there is a terrain drop off and a right turn towards the basket while dodging trees on your left and right the whole way, lots of fun.

The course is very short but don't expect to come here and not be challenged, but leave the high speed drivers at home. Elevation and tight fairways make this course fun, tough on your discs and tough on your score. Very easy to navigate as soon as you find hole one as there are signs everywhere, remember it's the trail on the left and then up the hill a while for hole one. There has been a large amount of work done at this place to clear fairways and under brush, you can tell from playing the course that someone was hard at work getting this course into shape. On a Saturday afternoon there were no other users of the park for disc golf or otherwise. All of the baskets are brand new and in great condition and seeing where the course is located and the amount of traffic it gets I would assume vandalism is very little.

Cons:

The course is new and primitive at the moment. Short, natural tee pads are a pain as they are usually not flat or have roots or tree stumps in the middle of the tee box making a run up very hard to do and even standing still shots can be uncomfortable. It would be nice to see a couple long, open holes to round out the rest of the place but seeing the land they have to work with this would be almost impossible. I think the balance of lefty and righty holes are a little off as more than half of the course are left to right doglegs. The fairways are pretty clear but big trouble awaits you off the course. There are a couple of long walks between holes but there are signs guiding you. A lot of blind pin placements and you might need a spotter on a couple of holes, I would recommend one for seventeen and eighteen for sure.

Other Thoughts:

We went and played here after the Ace Race in Dalaiwood today and I would say I could recommend this course if you are going to be in the area, like go play NAD and the Fairgrounds and then come here. My friend (his screen name here is cefire) hit an ace on hole six, his first in Washington, too bad he didn't hit it at the Ace Race earlier in the day, oh well.
