Nice if You're Close 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 8, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

Decent Baskets
Some interesting elevation changes
A few tree holes

Cons:

No tee pads
Plays over pedestrian path multiple times
One basket requires big hyzer shot that brings in directly over a park bench
Near baseball fields that an errant shot could easily reach

Other Thoughts:

It's worth playing if your nearby at a time when the park isn't going to be crowded. The elevation changes alone make it an interesting play but I wouldn't make a special trip.

Cute and Dangerous 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 19, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

Gardner Park is a nice little park near Cincinnati. It's a quick play if you're on your way to Idlewild, and the park is pretty scenic.

The park is small crowded, and the course plays around the perimeter, with the other park amenities in the center. The park also sits kind of in a bowl, so the holes are mostly sloped. Some are wooded, most are short, one or two are pretty long, but open enough to be fun.

Baskets are faded discatchers, but still pretty visible. One is hidden from the tee, but you can find it. Navigation is striaghtfoward once you find the first hole. Tees are just marked by a post, and the info on the posts is meh levels of helpful.

It is a fun quick play though. And I bet this course get's some good family play because of all the other amenities here. And it is very good for that.

Cons:

It's pretty short. There are maybe two holes that let you pull out a good distance driver. But that also means a lot of ace runs, so if that's what you like, you'll get a great opportunity to give some baskets a bid.

The tee's are dirt, which means after a rain, mud. The tee posts can be a little hard to find sometimes, but use the map and there's no room to get lost.

The course plays right with a walking path. This is a pretty big danger and even though there were only two other people there when I was there, I had to stop several times for them and wait for them to take the slowest walk ever to be out of range. It also plays near a soccer field, and over it a little bit if your shot is even a little errant (so practically a constant hazard for me).

Other Thoughts:

This course is a quick pick-up for a bagger, a fun lil neighborhood course for locals.

Gardner Park is actually a little charming, with it's nice green grass, great trees, a little elevation- but it's also dangerous to play with it's playground, parking lot, soccer field, and walking path. So like any good girlfriend, you have to ask yourself- is the cuteness worth the danger? I'd play it again if I was in the area, but just remember to be safe, and maybe bring protection.

9 Hole Rec Courses Features Some Fun Throws! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 15, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Gardner Park is a fairly good sized city park containing three ballfields, picnic shelters, play areas, skate punk park and a small fitness areas. The restrooms were open when I arrived at 6:06 am. The course starts right when you enter the park with the first hole playing up the hill beside the park's entry road. The course then continues around the perimeter of the park in a counter clockwise direction.

The tee signs are small and simple showing just the hole # and par. Someone has written the distances on the sign posts with Sharpie. I appreciate that gesture. The baskets are decent enough Discatchers with a small number on them. The tee pads, or lack there of are the course's Achilles heal. They are smallish, natural, bumpy, lumpy, rough, semi-dangerous and prone to muddiness.

The course is recreational in challenge. Experienced players could be looking at 6-9 strokes under par here. The three pars 4's wouldn't be that difficult for most players to birdie. There is some serious rough on your right side for much of the course, starting with hole three.

My favorite hole was probably # 4. It's kind of a fun little 191' downhill Annie although there is that thick rough just right of the basket. Playing alone this morning with no spotter, I played it very conservatively. # 7 is your first ACE waiting to happen, 97' with just a small hyser needed. They don't make holes much more Aceable than that.

Cons:

The tee pads are poor. They're small. There are big roots to trip you up on # 2. Most would be slippery when wet. I mostly teed off from the side.

The first 4-5 tee signs are set in the ground just off the left front of the pads. Makes you think about them when you're teeing off.

Posted pars are a little on simple side.

Nasty rough on the right has probably devoured a few discs.

# 1 is a safety hazard so beware of cars entering the park there.

Because the # 6 sign faces the wrong direction, I had to think for a minute where the basket is? It's not really that confusing but I was wondering why they faced it towards the woods.

Long walkout after # 2, walk past the play area and picnic shelter.

Other Thoughts:

It's really a pretty comfortable throw. I can see why it merits it's respectable rating. Put some decent tee pads here and players would increase their ratings. This is a course I wouldn't mind living close to although it would probably be better to play in a group here, to help spot on a couple of holes.

My Home Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 5, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This is a unique little 9 hole course. It offers a chance to work on your mid range shots as well as letting you throw a driver on a few holes. Depending on how you play OB, this could become a more challenging course on a windy day. Here is a way to play the OB and make it more of a Challenge:
#1 Road to the right, and long of the basket are OB
#2 sidewalk on the right and going over the hill on the left, as well as on the walking path long of the basket.
#3 Walking path or left of it.
#4 Walking path or Left of it.
#5 Walking Path or left of it.
#6 Walking path or right of it as well as left of the soccer goal. Also the Creek behind is OB
#7 Creek to the right or walking path and left of it.
#8 Walking path or right of it.
#9 After your tee shot, any upshot on the walking path or the left of it is OB

Cons:

The downsides to the Park. During softball season, Hole #1 and #2 is not playable due to children being around. The good news is that the walk from hole #9 to Hole #3 isn't bad at all. During High School baseball games, Hole #9 isn't playable. (You would be throwing into center and left field) People do use the walking path, but most that I have met like watching the discs fly and will even stop to watch. I even talked a walker into giving it a try and throwing a disc.

Other Thoughts:

The walk from hole #2 to #3 is a decent one, but if there are no kids on the playground behind right field there is a "local" hole. Tee off from the corner of the right field fence. The tire swing becomes the "basket" Anything through it or on it counts! Great park to bring the family as there is something for everyone to to do even if you don't throw. Playground, skate Park, Baseball, Basketball, volleyball, or soccer

Lockland's Disc Golf 2+ years drive by

Pros:

Driving into park, look right at baseball field 1. Hole # 1 starts by baseball field # 1, 3rd base side and throws up hill towards houses. Hole 2 throws along road. To get to tee 3, you will need to walk along path about 200 yards. All the rest of the tees fall into place clockwise around walking path. The baskets are all Innova Discatchers, double chained. The tee boxes are dirt with wooden posts There are also red round signs in ground.

Cons:

Only real con is that course is in middle of park with 3 baseball fields, a playgound, a soccer field, and a walking path. There is also a skate board/ roller blade stunt path and a half court basketball court that aren't in the way.

Other Thoughts:

Nice course in the middle of the city. You can geta round or two in during lunch.

Pros:

a well kept, 9 hole course in the middle of the park. This course is a good beginner and for has enough obstacle for advanced players as well. It has slight elevation changes, and enough trees in the way to keep it interesting.

Cons:

Not incredibly challenging, but not real easy either. Some people might not like that it sits in the middle of a park. there is a pathway for walkers in the way too, but not a big deal.

Other Thoughts:

A good 9 hole worth checking out.

Quirky Quick Nine 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 24, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The Gardner Park DG course has nine quirky, but decently fun, semi-urban holes fairly well laid out for the casual to Rec player to get a quick round in, possibly over a lunch break, if you work along the I-75 corridor just north of Cincinnati (inside the outer belt).
There are a couple of uphill shots and one downhill, even two or three that bring the park's trees into play, and the course mostly works its way counter-clockwise around the perimeter of the park rectangle, so there isn't much chance of getting lost.
The range of distances is readily apparent when you transition from the 550 foot #6 (which runs across the back of the park soccer field to a surprisingly high risk/reward green - go long on your approach, or skip into the woods, and you might find that your disc has gone into what can be a fairly deep, wide, and fast-flowing Mill Creek!) ... to the very next hole (#7) being an easy ace run 70 footer!
Tee areas are currently grass/dirt marked by a red plate and a tee sign, but the Innova baskets are fairly decent.
For such a confined space, this park has a huge variety of other activities for family members, from ball fields, bb courts, play equipment, a small skate park, shelters, benches, bathrooms, etc.: all the usual family park amenities.

Cons:

The limitations of the park mean this will only get nine baskets, and it's unlikely that poured tee pads will go in here.
There is a long trek from the #2 basket to the #3 tee area.
Errant shots are likely to involve other park patrons, and even some of the fairways cross the walking path twice. The tee area for hole #3 launches right over the horseshoe pits. There is a bench less than 50 feet from the #9 basket that's in play for a bad, long drive or approach shot.
The hill coming down from the #4 tee is very steep, so watch out if you've got knee problems or if it's wet.

Other Thoughts:

Probably not a course to out of your way for, but if you are already in the area, it could be a good warm up, or the only decent course nearby. I've experienced that myself, having the closest course to my home being handy, but a little bit sad. I won't specify which nine hole course near my home I mean, but I think I'm one of the few who play there. Gardner has to get more traffic, being 'in town'.

Gardner Park 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 15, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

There are a few elevation changes and a variety of shots. Most of the holes are short which makes this a great beginner's course. The biggest pro for me was that I was able to throw a hyzer and anhyzer with a mid-range which was good practice.

Cons:

Holes play near a walking path that comes in to play on most holes. I was there on a Friday afternoon and there were 2 people walking the trail. These 2 people were the only other people in the park.

Other Thoughts:

I can't wait to go back and play this course. It was a great warm up before heading over to Winton Woods which only took about 15 minutes to get there.

Nice addition to the park 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 10, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

Nice baskets, nice variety of shots with terrain.
It wasn't boring for an experienced golfer and will hopefully introduce the sport to the neighborhood.

Cons:

Multi-use park and the danger to non-golfers.
The lack of Tee signs or pads.

Hole 6 and 9 are probably the worst for possible interaction with the walkers or people playing soccer next to 6. 6 should have been shorter so that 7 was longer then ~110'.

Map is a must till they get tee signs.

Other Thoughts:

It was not very crowded on a Sunday evening but 9 is a long, blind shot going over the walking path. We spotted for each other to make sure it was safe.

Safety of the non-golfers is my concern at this park.

Fun Active Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 23, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Course has convenient parking location as you can park and start on Hole 1 without having to walk far for 1st tee which is located next to Field 1 (All the baseball fields are numbered and Field 1 is the 1st field when entering Gardner Park) 3rd baseline. There are 2 restroom facilities too. The course takes you around the whole park and can be played in about 30 minutes if you're playing well. Great use of the land as there are elevation changes and Mill Creek is even brought into play.

Cons:

It's hard to find your way around as this is still a new course and hole info or tee pads are not up yet. They do have temporary Innova markers on the ground but they are hard to find as there isn't anything sticking up out of the ground marking where to tee off as of yet. Mulch pads will be coming soon from what I hear and having those will be very helpful!

Other Thoughts:

Skate Park is up and running down there too as of 06/23/11 which has a perfect setup for skaters. I haven't messed around down there yet but it will be done this week I imagine. There are 2 other ball fields which are rarely used and not in the way; same goes for the soccer field. As a Lockland resident it's rare to see anyone on the soccer field as they don't utilize that field for games. The walking path seems to have lead people to believe that there are a lot of walkers but again, as a Lockland resident, they are not really an issue as visibility is clear on every hole and you can see anyone who's walking. They have yet to hold a 5,000 people marathon so comments about "walkers" should be ignored. You will see "some" people but that's life:)

Nice Course for Quick Round 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 27, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

Nice brand-new course in quiet local park. New baskets are top quality. Enough trees to provide some shade, scenery, and obstacles. Nice use of elevation and trees to make a small course more difficult. Each hole felt like it was well thought-out. Great place to play a quick 9....two of us played this course in about 12-15 minutes over lunch.

Cons:

Tees are grass and currently hard to find. Will be easier to find once they get worn in a bit, but they will remain slippery until a better surface is put in place. I have heard rumors that they will be adding mulch. While this is not great, it is better than slippery grass. While course has about 4 legit par fours (holes 3, 6, 9) all of the rest can be played as par 2. An expert player could play 7 as a par 1. You literally just toss a soft hyzer around the tree and hope you aced it.

Other Thoughts:

All in all a very enjoyable course for a quick round. More fun and less crowded than most Cincinnati short courses if you want to take a few minutes to work on your short game. Although not an issue at lunch time I can definitely see how there could be major problems if the baseball fields, soccer fields, and jogging path are in use. All three are in play frequently. Last thought - watch out for Mill Creek on holes 6-9 (especially #6 approach). When I was there it looked like anything unfortunate enough to make it in the creek would be long gone.

Be Aware of People 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 24, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

+Every hole has some sort of obstacle, whether it be trees (usually), hills (first few only), or distance (hole 6).
+Great baskets
+Logical course layout, with only one medium-distance walk between basket #2 and tee #3.
+Course drains well to a nearby creek, so mud isn't usually an issue except maybe around #9's basket
+Hole six is definitely over 300 feet, would like to see distances measured
+Hole 3 is up a hill and slightly to the right, unable to see the basket from the tee
+Plenty of parking and restrooms on site

Cons:

-The first four holes are next to baseball diamonds; there was a game going on by hole 1 and 2, so we had to be cautious and really couldn't throw at one confidently, erring on the side of caution.
-The walking path and soccer fields make up hole 6's fairway, if there are soccer games going on, it may be unplayable
-Holes 6-9 are basically paralleling the walking path. Be VERY careful, I can see some joggers being hit at this course for sure.
-Every hole just plays for the most part straight ahead, no doglegs
-Holes 4, 7, and 8 are all very short, probably under 200 feet
-Poison Ivy everywhere, and ragweed abounds (for you allergy sufferers)
-Grass tees, with no maps (we had to climb the hill to see the pin on hole 3 to know where to throw)

Other Thoughts:

The red marker discs are hard to locate in the grass, making finding the next tee difficult if you haven't played it before. It's a fun course, making great use of existing old growth trees. I'd see taking someone here who's new to wooded courses but pretty much has some basic disc control down, especially if there are sporting events going on or joggers present.

There was a large tree down right in front of tee #9, it was from the storms last night, and I imagine it will be cleaned up very soon, but I thought I'd mention it.

Garden variety at Gardner Park. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 24, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Located in a quaint city park and has new DISCatcher Pro targets. Incorporates a bit of elevation on the first 4 holes. There are some wooded shots to open and close the round. There are 2 holes of around 400 ft. Multiple ace opportunities. Navigation is not a problem once tee marker 1 is located. The soccer field provides a good place to work on shots if it is not in use. Some gonzo golfing is a possibility in order to add length to the shorter holes. Being a newer course, it is not crowded with too many DGenerates at this time.

Cons:

Since it is located in a park with 3 ball diamonds, a soccer field and loops around with the walking path, human obstacles can be an issue. The red tee markers are hard to spot, but not an issue once a round is played.

Other Thoughts:

This course was a total surprise to the local disc golf community in Greater Cincinnati and I imagine there are going to be safety concerns when there are some games going on. The discoverer of the course posted this course find on the local DG website forum after spotting orange cones covering the locking sleeves in the park one day.
