Awesome Course drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 30, 2023 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Free
Scenery is top notch
Elevation adds character
50/50 mix of wooded and field
21 unique holes
A couple holes make for interesting putts
Uphill shots
Downhill shots
Side hill shots
Been very well maintained the last two years I've been there

Cons:

Nearly all easy par 3's
No food or bathrooms on site
Sun sets behind mountain so you loose daylight early

Other Thoughts:

Two creeks, mountains, forest, and fields. They've added three holes before spring tournament in '23. Higher difficulty than the other 18. They are placed between holes 13 and 14. Hanging basket above a small creek in a holler is so cool. Beautiful little spot.

Fun Course, Beautiful Area 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 6, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

Clean area! Beautiful State Park Forest. Really Nice Hike.

#6 is a really great visual for a downhill throw. Tight off the tee, and opens up past the tree lines. Beautiful!

#10 and 11 play along a creek. Pretty area with running water to hear while putting.

Mostly short throws. Not much time needed to play, you'll finish quick.

Rough doesnt punish you (May 2021), as long as the front 9 is kept up well.

**Shout out to those who laid teepads! It's great to have level tee pads on a uphill/downhill course. Many courses will pour them slanted.THANK YOU!

Great for new players. To develop Hyzer and Anhyzers.

Cons:

Mostly short. Not much technicality to challenge you.

Back 9 bring more challenges with the tight fairways and lines. Uphill throws will challenge you too.

Poison Ivy near the pines...if you're like me, avoid it at all costs.

A little far to get to, since it's at the end of the park road. (Not bad really)

Other Thoughts:

My Cons are really not complaints at all. There really isn't much wrong with this course other than it being small/not challenging to experienced players. Just get out and enjoy it!

I can definitely see a second, more experienced course being placed here. If they decide to do that, this would be a destination to travel to more often.

Good Mtn course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 14, 2020 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Beautiful mountain scenery, ace runs, concrete tee pads, mostly clean, plenty of friendly discers, and gnomes. The wooded part of this course is more technical while the open front nine has the scenic views. Good beginner course, great recreational level course and highly recommended to anyone looking for a fun course to play.

Cons:

I've played hundreds of rounds out here and the course gets boring to me at times. I enjoy the challenge of the sport and progressing my game, but there are plenty of times where the course left me feeling stagnant and unchallenged. Simply put, it's my opinion that the course is too short and not challenging enough for my skill level which is around 950+ rating. I play the course about 2-4 times a month and I'm good with that. Parking lot gets too crowded at times, and even the course can be too crowded on rare occasions.

Other Thoughts:

I'd love to see alternate tees, a drop box, score cards with course and area dg info.

Gorgeous, but surprisingly short 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 6, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

- One of the prettier courses you'll ever play. Surrounded by mountains, old forests, and a clear-running stream, with great elevation changes on the front 9 especially.
- Two 9-hole loops, one open, one wooded.
- Requires a decent variety of shot shapes.
- I'm really glad that hole 9 exists, for at least one opportunity to open up the taps and give a full send.
- Nice balance of challenge and fun, you can run through this course quickly for fun, but also come back to study and practice a variety of shots.
- Did I mention that this is a stunningly beautiful course?

Cons:

- With how much land was available, and how open the front 9 is, it's surprising how short most of these holes are.
- If the course is crowded, especially for a tournament, safety could be an issue, as quite a few baskets are close to teepads.
- With how foggy it often is in the mountains, beware of slick teepads.

Other Thoughts:

I typically don't like short courses. But this one is so scenically gorgeous, and requires such a variety of (mostly short) shots, that I'd come back here over and over again if I could. This is likely my very favorite sub-5000-ft. course.

My new home 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 2, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The baskets are in excellent condition. The teepads are very nice flat and level concrete. The course is clean and it's stayed that way all the times I've played. A nice variety of shots needed to be get a great score but it's still a simple and fair course for newer players. The elevation changes are not too extreme and still a good variable on the course. Beautiful views. Quite relaxed environment. Nice locals that will call if they find a disc in the brush.

Cons:

The rough on the front does turn wayward shots into a frustrating search and rescue if you're not sure where it is. There's no facilities for water or a restroom, although just a quarter mile down the road the campsite does have this if you really need it I guess. I think some of the distances on the tee signs are off by +-20 or more.

Other Thoughts:

We play for tags out here most Sundays at 9:30 and there is doubles on Wednesday around 5-5:30 for 5$ winners take all and a dollar ace pot(optional) we all think we're going to win every time, somehow I have missed every try though lol. I'm very happy to have this as my new home course since I moved from Houston, there is a local named Matt(friendly guy) who has a private course nearby if you're interested in some variety and fresh new challenges, he also has the tags and runs the area's disc golf scene so get in touch with him and you'll be good to go. Best of luck and enjoy your plastic tossing exercises!

The Greenbrier Forest 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 18, 2018 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

18 concrete tees with tee signs and Discatcher baskets. Nice use of the elevation and open and wooded space the course lies on to provide fun variety. Two loops of nine holes to parking lot. Easy to find and navigate.

Cons:

Course is fairly short with only one set of tees. Compact layout could cause some interference between holes. Summer may be rough finding discs off fairway with tall grass on the front 9.

Other Thoughts:

I had more fun than I expected playing at Greenbrier State Forest. I nearly crapped my pants on hole 17 when I thought a bear was coming after me, I could feel the earth moving and hear a rumbling, turned out to be a 150' pine tree falling behind me. Hole 6 and 9 were my favorites, both longer downhill shots with sweet views.

The course is well suited for beginners to intermediate players while more advanced players will have some fun ace running every hole and working on their short game. Some holes can also be safaried. Parking lot is open until 10pm, so you could play some glow.

Warm Welcome 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 17, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

Two 9-hole loops. Signs on baskets point towards next tee,

Practice basket and area for warm-up drives.

Nice views across valley from top tees.

Cons:

Down-sloping tee-6 shared with tee-8.

Pretty short - take away the two long downhill/slope holes, and the average is ~200'

When tight, too tight?

Other Thoughts:

The first half of the course plays up, down, and across a grassy hillside, framed by tree lines along the bottom and left, and dense woods along the top and right (where holes 12-18 may be found). Elevation change and/or these tree lines provide the challenge on the mostly-open holes, with only hole-5 imposing obstacles on both sides of the flight path.

Flat number-10 isn't too dissimilar from the front-9, and equally-flat number-11 isn't overly tight, but number-12 is where the stark contrast from the front-9 occurs, as all the holes have very tight throwing alleys, and elevation changes is a factor once again. These final holes are quite short, averaging ~150, so will definitely challenge you slow control game.

Decent enough course, offering a fair mix of (wide) open and (quite-and short) tight.

The title? My Avenger-SS opening drive plunked the top of basket-1!

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 21, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Grieenbrier DGC is an above average mountain course with some good variety and fantastic scenery.

I didn't really know what to expect coming here as a short stop on a road trip to DC from Chicago, but I was pleasantly surprised. The location of the course offers some great seclusion and impressive views of the nearby mountains.

The course incorporates a lot of elevation and more and more tree cover as you move into the back 9. It's a challenging play throughout, but most skill levels should be able to score well assuming you can drive accurately in the 250' range.

The baskets were all in good condition, there's a practice basket and a large sign with the layout and score cards right off the main road.

Cons:

I played here in February when there was still snow on the ground so some of the tee boxes were hard to find. Signs help with that, BUT the tee boxes were all natural and throwing from sloped snowy tee boxes, especially on some of the downhill shots, was straight up dangerous.

The hill that's used for most of the elevation change on the front 9 is pretty steep. Definitely wear boots if there's snow or wet conditions.

Other Thoughts:

This course is right off the interstate and definitely worth the stop if you're driving through WV. The elevation and scenery make this course a really enjoyable place to play a round. I didn't get to do a lot of exploring, but the park is pretty large and there are plenty of places to explore beyond the DG course.

The park attendant gave us some pretty weak directions that confused the hell out of us, but it's pretty simple to find... just drive straight down the road from the park entrance, until you see it on your left. The course signage is impossible to miss.

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 5, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course used to only be 9 holes, but now has a full 18. The baskets are Discatchers making them easy to spot from the tee (in fact on the front there are times when several baskets are in view with the mountains in the background making for wonderful views!) The tee signs were simple but very nice and effective. Navigation was clear and easy with mowed grass paths on the front and tree lined dirt paths on the back and every basket had an arrow in the bottom pointing to the next tee. The course offers moderate challenges, though not overly hard, making it good for players of all ages and skill levels, which is ideal for a state park course.

The front 9 plays mostly on an open side of a big hill with shots going up, down, and across the hill to strategic basket positions. There is little chance to lose a disc- however, when it is windy, or if they were to let the fairway grass grow really tall, there might be issues with finding your shots. The back is substantially shorter than the front with many holes in the 100'-200' range, but they are in the woods providing that technical challenge that was lacking when the course only had 9 holes.

There is a practice basket and a big field with ample practice room warm-up with full drives if you want. Copies of the course map and scorecards are available at the kiosk. There was a picnic table next to the kiosk and practice area. The parking lot was large. The course is really easy to get to off I-64- just take exit 175 and in a couple miles you will be at the course.

Cons:

Natural tees are always a con, but the signs show the tee location and on the front there on numbered bricks as tee markers, and on the back many "tee boxes" are outlined by logs.

#15 is a little difficult to get good footing being on a leafy sidehill the whole way (nice steps built into the slope going up to the basket, however, to make getting your disc easy!) #16 could use some steps to get up to the top of the hill rather than the little goatpath that is there now.

After my first round here, my opinion on the back was that there were far too many poke-and-pray holes and a couple more trees should be removed, but during my 2nd round I studied the lines a little more and birdied almost every hole since the holes are pretty short, so I guess they are ok, but they do require both skill and luck.

Other Thoughts:

The creeks shown on the map were completely dry and would barely even come into play on #10 and #11 if there was water.

This course is nothing extraordinary, but it is solid and pretty fun to play. I enjoyed 2 relaxing rounds while staying in the park's cabins. The mountains of West Virginia are spectacularly beautiful (especially in the fall) and offer many other outdoor activities like hiking, camping, fishing and biking (for example, the nearby Greenbrier River Trail is an 80 mile bike trail made from an old railroad track that runs along the scenic Greenbrier River.)

nice little stop 2+ years drive by

Pros:

This course is easy to find from I-64. I travel with my 3 year old from VA to OH about once a month. I mapped this course out the other day, and it was no more than 5 miles off the interstate, just go through the tunnel off the exit, pass the station, the campgrounds will be on your left, and you'll run into it. Pros...like I said, close to the interstate. You can play this course real quickly too, as the first 9 baskets can all be seen from a central point in the field. Small fairways were mowed, allowing a walking path to the basket from the pads so you didn't have to walk in the taller, thicker soon to be hay. Many easy pars as well as a bird opportunities. They also have printable maps to take with you available at the bulletin board.

Cons:

The pads aren't concrete, but I've played many that aren't. The front 9 was actually enjoyable, but really easy.

Other Thoughts:

I wouldn't use this course as a home course, but its definitely a good one if you need a break while traveling. It is also located in a national park, so there are plenty of family activities as well. I saw plenty of people at the pool when I drove by. There are also plenty of picnic areas available. This exit also has gas stations and restaurants, so you can make it a one-stop do it all stop.

Pros:

Great open shots down the fairway and Some short but challenging holes on the back 9. Overall beautiful scenery and the distances from the t box to the pin are not so far that it is unreasonable for even a novice to grab a few pars. :)

Cons:

A few of the holes on the back 9 could do with out So many trees between the t box and the pin. But the back 9 looks new and I had a blast playing all 18.

Other Thoughts:

maybe bring your bug spray and consider trying an overhand of the t box on a few of the super wooded holes on the back 9. Great to see a course in this area cuz i visit here often and will play a ton here.
