Quick and fun 9er

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 12, 2024 Played the course:once

Pros:

Hamarkotstún is a city park in Akureyri, Iceland. There is a simple little 9-hole disc golf course playing around the park.

This is a great little layout catering to beginners and rec players looking for a quick round. While the course mostly uses open areas of the park and there aren't many obstacles technically BETWEEN tee and basket, there are lots of places where thicker wooded areas are just off the fairway - just close enough to restrict shot shaping to an extent. There are two spots where the foliage fully comes into play. Hole 6 has a big bush right in front of the tee pad that you have to toss over or around. The finishing hole 9 has a thread-the-needle wooded line that is a nice challenge to end the round.

There are two layouts here - a short White layout and shorter Red layout. The White tee pads are arrays of...patio pavers with rubber around the edges of each paver? They were flat and large enough. The Red pads are natural - but not a big deal here since you won't need to run up. The tee signs are color coded by layout and simple, showing hole number/distance/par. Again not top tier but fine, since all baskets are visible from the tee.

The baskets are DiscGolfPark models with the "Next Tee" arrows welded in the bottom. One per hole. Those arrows plus a nice kiosk/course map at hole 1 make navigation easy. The park has trash cans and benches available.

Cons:

Typical multi use issues here. Hole 7 plays across a small soccer field, and other holes play near various walking paths. When I visited there were a couple people bicycling on the paths too. Far from the worst offenses I have seen in this category, but just be alert.

The holes are all very short, flat, and easy. Even from the White tees nothing is longer than 68 m (223'). The other eight holes are listed at 54 m (177') or less. I finished -6, and could have done even better. The Pro Tour isn't coming here anytime soon.

No practice basket, and I did not see a restroom in the park.

=== Disclaimer and Award ===
I'm an American from the state of Michigan who played 14 courses in Iceland while on vacation. My ratings and thoughts are therefore relative to the other courses I played in Iceland - but also the hundreds of US courses I have played. Furthermore, I use the entire 0-5 rating scale per DGCR standards. For example, a 3.5/5 may be seen as a negative on Amazon or UDisc - but here it really does mean "Very Good".

I am giving each course I played in Iceland an informal award, because every course has something special to offer.
This course's award is: Best Casual Round in Akureyri.
This course is nothing to write home about, but it's the sort of place every casual disc golfer would love to have within a quick walk or drive. I'd play here all the time if I lived in Akureyri. Like previous reviewer Hawg said, just a fun place to practice upshots and putts. If you so choose, you could use just one disc and be through in 15 minutes solo.

I'd also guess that this is the best option in the area if you're visiting during the winter months. The two 18s in town are just way too hilly and would probably be treacherous to navigate, with high chance of disc loss in the snow.

If you are on an Iceland cruise and trying to bag a quick one, this is a better quality round than Eiðsvöllur - but just be warned, that 1.5 km walk to get here from the dock is quite a bit uphill. It will be a much longer time commitment and more effort, but you'll get to experience some decent views on the way.

Nice little course.

Pros:

Nice park. Good midrange and putter holes. Side arms and back hands required and a couple tight lines required.

Cons:

overall short, we played twice, once from the whites and than also extended the holes too. Watch out for walkers!

Other Thoughts:

Fun course to make your own mandos tee-pads, etc. Easy play to practice upshots. Lots of fun.
