Destined to be WV’s #1 course

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 6, 2024 Played the course:once

Pros:

From the West Virginia-shaped green to the rolling hills to the challenging wooded holes, the new Hurricane Bridge course offers excellence in design and rolls out four different layouts to boot.

Lots of options are available at Hurricane Bridge since there are two teepads and two baskets on every hole. The short-to-short option is about 4,100 feet and par 54. The long-to-long option is over 8,100 feet and is a par 70 (that's right; there are only four par-3s on this layout). In speaking with a group of locals playing Sunday morning doubles, they recommended selecting the short teepad (red) to the long basket (white) as the best option if only playing once.

The signature hole has to be Hole #1, as it features a mulched "green" in the shape of West Virginia and the grassy area outside the state outline is played as a hazard. But the course features numerous impressive hole designs that incorporate features such as a creek, marked OB areas, significant elevation changes and landing zones with a nice mix of open holes, heavily wooded holes and some in between.

The beauty at Hurricane Bridge is top-notch. From majestic trees to grassy hills and fairways, the layout offers some excellent views.

While the course opened this year, the course seems completely done and well-maintained. The tee signs and teepads exude quality and the rest of the course is neat as a pin.

Navigation is outstanding. There are plenty of cues to locate the basket or next teepad.

Cons:

The parking lot in the park is closest to Hole #17, so many groups likely start with Hole #17 or Hole #18 instead of walking down the hill to start on Hole #1. There is a parking lot at the bottom of the hill near Hole #1 which belongs to a nearby church, though that is probably suitable parking outside of service times.

The course starts with reasonably open holes through Hole #6, then disappears into the woods for Holes #7 to #13 before popping back into the open for the closing holes. It would have been nice to have the variety mixed a little more, but that would likely have compromised the quality of the design.

Several holes include marked OB, so that would be a con on a few holes if artificial OB is not your thing. I'm typically not a fan of OB, but the stakes mark the areas well and are fair.

I didn't see any restrooms or water fountains near the parking lot.

Other Thoughts:

There's another highly-rated course (Valley Park DGC) just a few miles away so it's a great opportunity to bag two of West Virginia's finest in an afternoon. The UDisc ratings currently give the edge to Valley Park, but everyone in my foursome thought that Hurricane Bridge was the better course, especially considering the four-layout option that is available.

We bagged 11 courses in the Greater Charleston area over a weekend, and Hurricane Bridge was the best of the bunch.

Easily Top 5 course I've played drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 10, 2024 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This may be a little early to call it a 5 star course, but I am basing it on what I see.

This place is a gem. I put it up there with Idlewild, Hidden Ridge, Flip City, Holler, Harmon Hills.

-2 Tees every hole.
-2 baskets every hole.
-Long open holes, shorter technical holes, long technical wooded holes with tight fairways.
-Excellent use of the elevation and water provided.

This might be the one course in our region where I would say that 6 figures+ has went into development. Incredible how much care has been taken to make this place a possibility.

Cons:

I don't live near enough to this place. Only true con at this point is that it is so new that there isn't ample grass everywhere.

Other Thoughts:

Thank you Johnny and the local club for making this course a reality. Truly can't believe that we have this course in our region. Will add more to this review this week. Mostly using this as a place holder.
