A spearhead effort to get course in State Parks

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Dec 4, 2024 Played the course:once

Pros:

First (and currently only) course in a Vermont State Park; this is an effort by community members and volunteers to grow the sport and prove this can be done within State Parks. By supporting this course, you are helping to promote this effort throughout the State.

Cons:

Construction is slow going due to resources available, we have tried hard to make holes playable first, and are now working on sprucing up the roughness. Allowing players to play the ruffed in holes has hurt our reviews but it is hopefully clear that they are leaving ruffed in status now.

Because of park policies, tees will remain natural, but holes 1-17 are currently almost completely finished (stumps were removed in 2024). Hole 18 is our next focus before adding some final touches into the rest of the course. Working on funding for a bridge and additional tree removal and landscaping is planned for this hole next summer.

Red tees and Ace tees coming soon.

Would love volunteer help or suggestions: [email protected].

Other Thoughts:

I designed this course so I am obviously bios.

If you haven't played this course this year, you should come check it out. Thanks to Tim from Johnson & Sons bikes a ton of work was done on the back 9.

I agree with the previous reviewer about the courses descriptions except for the description of hole 7. It does have a clunky unavoidable hike to the tee, however I actually really like that hole. You don't see many uphill holes and the elevation change allowed us to assign it a par 4 white tee rating. We call it our reveal hole as it ends with the best view available in the entire park and then is followed by a long downhill fun "wing it" drive.

As of 10/20/21, more potential than kinetic 2+ years

Pros:

A variety of lengths, shapes, and challenges.

Cons:

Portions of course VERY raw. Dampness possibilities.

Rough, natural tees; single basket

Other Thoughts:

Course plays in the secluded meadow, then along the hillside, then in the bordering trees/woodline, of a very scenic park located in the extreme southwest corner of Vermont.

The holes break into the following groupings:
* Holes 1-6: Dead flat, carved from a meadow - but more interesting than one might think. Most will use a few scattered trees and supporting bushes to guard the basket, and/or to create differing approach vectors - narrower-but-straighter, or with more shot-shaping requirements.
* Hole=7: Ugh! Walk 2/3rds up a very steep, very wooded slope. Find a tee. Huck your disc up, hoping to miss trees. Repeat. At least the basket is in the open, offering gorgeous views. An annoyingly painful but necessary transition hole.
* Holes 8-11.5. Plays down, across, and around the open slope you just hiked up from the backside. Not pure hucks, as basket=9 is guarded by big evergreens, basket=10 needs a crisp, right-turner to reach the basket, and elevated tee=11 throws into the woods at about the midpoint, to a well-guarded basket.
* Hole 12: Wooded, moderate length, subtle shot-shaping.
* Hole 13: Open nearly through, right-turning at end to find basket in woodline.
* Holes 14-15: Wooded, not long, 14 needing a sharp left, and 15 a subtle right, with the clear, broad stream running along the leftside in its entirety.
* Holes 16-18: The big boys! Long. Wooded throughout. Multi-jointed - land in the optimum landing zones, or deal with much awkwardness at the next throw(s).

Navigation tips:
To find tee=1, head for the water, head for the far back right corner of the parking lot. Hopefully you'll find the practice basket, and not to far from it, a small wooden bridge leading to a path, leading to the start of the course.
If for some reason you must park outside the gate, you have two options:
* tee=13 is in the open field to the left, throwing back towards the main road/corner of the woods
* tee=16 is in the woods, on the far side of the building at the entry gate, then right

My desired 2.75 :) rating reflects the course as of the date I played it. If/when the newer holes are groomed further, and the tees improved, this course has the potential to be very solid, borderline excellent.
