Macon Early Makin' Frustrations Early and Late

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 27, 2024 Played the course:once

Pros:

Apparently western NC is fond of turning many of its courses into dual layouts, with either dual tees or dual baskets. Macon Early managed to separate itself by seemingly making one layout per hole about as unplayable as possible. It's like this was deliberate.
- If you took the better of the two layouts on each hole, you'd have a really good course, essentially 7.5 quality holes. Your only issues would be the approach on #3 and the lack of a fairway on #4. To be fair, #4 is the only hole on the course where both layouts share the tee. So, there wasn't a chance to create a better fairway.
- Course takes good advantage of the elevation. #2 is a testy tee shot/approach shot. If you're playing solo, better not throw long OR be incredibly fast running after your shot the instant you release.
- #4 & 5 have lots of room to them. They feel like normal, well-maintained disc golf holes without any clutter or overgrowth to them.
- #7 & 8 are the two short, easy-birdie/ace-able holes. Both are under 200 feet.
- Some of the retired holes that are shown in the pictures on here? I want to play those instead. Fresh mulch in the tee pads instead of waste high grass? Wow.

Cons:

Not sure why this course has been neglected, but it's atrocious in spots. Chronologically:
- Long tee on #1 is overgrown. Otherwise, one of the better maintained holes.
- Long tee on #2 is at an absurd, sharp right dogleg. Blind tee shot going sharply downhill isn't good. Especially when you can't throw from the tee.
- #3 short tee is unplayable. Area around basket is overgrown. You're better being 60 feet short of the basket than 30 because at least that way it'll be easy to spot and throw your disc.
- #4 hasn't been maintained at all in a long time. There's no where safe to land your disc that you can keep an eye on it the entire time. And this is only a 190-foot hole.
- #5 short tee should be the best tee shot on the course. A mini 'top of the world' tee shot. You've got to navigate through chest high growth to get to the tee. Throw from a non-leveled, unsafe, overgrown tee then try to walk down an unkempt, uneven, muddy slope. A complete disaster and utter waste.
- #6's hole lengths are incorrect. Otherwise, both layouts are perfect.
- #7's long tee has zero fairway. Narrow fairway for the first 150 feet. Then woods with zero gaps to throw through. Hard enough to walk through this area. Not sure what they're expecting in terms of throwing.
- #8 at least one of the tees is overgrown. Otherwise, close to perfect from both tees.
- #9's long tee is missing markers. I guess make up your own spot somewhere on the path.

Other Thoughts:

This course has the potential to be an extremely fun layout. It could be an awesome flow through the rolling hills on the back of campus and along the greenway. And it really wouldn't be that difficult.
- The easiest solution is to completely remove #4 and add another hole somewhere. Honestly, I'd fix the transitions from #5's short tee and make that its own hole.
- Throw in two hours of work from 3 guys and you can clear out the putting circles around #2 & 3 and you've fixed the main issues here.
- Yes, I know some holes are #1 vs 10, 5 vs 14, etc. and not the long and short tees. If it's an issue, let me know and I'll glad to clarify for you.
- Course reminded me a lot of Shoals in Pinnacle, 3.5 hours to the east (north of Winston-Salem).
- How does Franklin have such a nice greenway trail?
- Course should be better than it is. With some basic work, it should be rated a half to whole point higher.

Fun and Crazy 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 5, 2021 Played the course:once

Other Thoughts:

Not worth going out of you way to play this course, but if you are in the area we had a lot of fun even though you are going to have to do a little hunting for tee pads and baskets. It was empty when we played it over July 4 weekend. One hole is literally on the side of a steep hill in the woods with no discernible fairway, and another (7) is essentially impossible as a par 3 because trees that were likely 20 feet tall when the course went in are now 60 feet tall with no way through. There are alternate tee placements if you want to play the same 9 baskets in a different layout. The course needs some maintenance because of unrestrained plant growth, but I appreciated the creativity of the designer and had a great time.

Worst hole I’ve ever played 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 10, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

Better known as Old Siler Farm, the Macon Early College course offers a taste of rugged Appalachian mountain disc golf but unfortunately appears to have frequently suffered from neglect during its decade of existence.

Hole #2 could be the signature hole; the mountainous scenery is tremendous, and the fairway includes navigating several trees on the left while dropping down a steep hill to the right. Turn too early and you're in the bushes; turn too late and you're stuck behind a tree on the hill with a tricky approach to the pin.

Holes #5 and #6 are a couple more worthwhile designs; the holes are flat but in a lovely valley bordered by a creek on the right and the Little Tennessee River Greenway on the left, so you may see runners and bikers passing by.

The course attempts to masquerade as an 18-hole course by providing two teepads on each hole (except for Hole #4) and numbering them from 1 to 9 and 10 to 18. Nice try. In reality, this is a nine-hole course with short and long teepads.

The tee signs include the number, distance and a simple graphic depiction of the hole.

It's a couple-minute walk from the parking lot to the first teepad. Hole #9 returns to the start of the course.

Cons:

Hole #7 is an AWFUL hole. I rate it as the worst hole I've ever played.

Sure, forcing disc golfers to throw over trees might have seemed like a brilliant idea when the course was designed.

But it wasn't.

In its current state, the hole will be extremely difficult to play for all but the big-armed disc golfers who can clear the tall and thick trees. Check out the DGCR photo I posted. When I arrived at the Hole #7 teepad, I had no idea of the basket's location as I was surrounded by tall grasses and briars in all directions. I walked around for about 10 minutes before figuring out that if you're facing the tee sign, you're looking in the right direction. About 100 feet down the "fairway" is a wall of trees 30 to 40 feet high. This stretch of impenetrable forestry is probably 100 feet deep, and then the basket is positioned in an opening up the hill on the other side.

Some disc golfers might skip Hole #7, but I'm a sucker for punishment. I hopelessly threw my drive into the middle of the woods. Fortunately, I found it among the dense undergrowth, and then I pitched it forward about 40 feet. From there, I threw a tomahawk up the hill through a small gap and landed about 25 feet from the basket. I made my putt and considered myself fortunate to only take a 4.

By the way, for the less adventurous, there's an alternate teepad on the other side of the Hole #7 jungle; it's only 120 feet and boring. But seriously, unless you can throw a huge sky hyzer or enjoy looking for your driver, you can rationalize playing the short teepad.

The course conditions left much to be desired when I played. The teepads used to be wooden planks filled with woodchips, but those areas are rutted and uneven. Holes #2 and 3 were in bad need of mowing. Hole #4 is heavily wooded with a narrow fairway on the side of a steep hill. Even more treacherous was the steep, barely-there path leading to Hole #5. And of course, the aforementioned Hole #7 is rife with underbrush and nearly unplayable.

Navigation at the Macon Early College course isn't great, especially if you're trying to find both teepads. The UDisc map was somewhat helpful. There aren't enough visual cues or signs to indicate where the current basket or next hole is.

Other Thoughts:

Other disc golfers have described the course with these terms: Overgrown, confusing, poorly designed, and nonexistent upkeep.

With its elevation and fantastic views, the potential for the Old Siler Farm disc golf course is actually high. Sadly, in reading reviews from years past, regular maintenance - including frequent mowing - seems to always be a problem.

Was probably good at one time 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 9, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

DISCatcher baskets.
Good, DG only section of campus, with elevation.
Tee signs on most holes, most had front and back nine tees.
Mix of holes, a few wooded, but most were open.

Cons:

A couple of paved tees, but most were just mulch.
#4 looks nothing like the pictures on here, very overgrown and the side-sloping fairway is just a narrow path.
#6 basket seems to have been moved, making a very long hole.
#7 - signed and mulched tee does not match course map. The #7 tee lines up one of the craziest holes I have seen. More on that below.
Pretty rough condition overall, long grass, old tee signs, several baskets were faded.

Other Thoughts:

I imagine when this course was first put in that it was very welcome in the area. At that time, the next nearest course was 15 miles away, over mountain roads. It was probably a nice layout at that time, but since then, it looks like very little work has been done, especially any grass cutting.
Paved tees were never put in and the tee signs are minimal. Someone has designated alternate tees on most holes, in an attempt to make 18 unique holes, but you may have to look a while for all of them.
Several holes had very thick rough, the kind you don't what to have to go into and #4 just looks like a jungle. Then, the path down to #5 was pretty treacherous. There was a surprising open, flat area for #5 and 6, including a paved greenway path. #6 seemed longer than the posted distance, like the basket was moved to the furthest point possible.
Then #7 - a next tee sign, and the framed tee for #7 has you on a small hillside, staring at a large wall of trees, at least 30-40 feet high. No gap to shoot through, just the tiniest of paths to slip through. I didn't bother throwing on this hole, but once I got through the trees, I found the basket in a clearing on the other side. One of the worst hole designs I've ever seen.
#8 and #9 were not bad holes, mostly open with some thick rough, slightly uphill.
As I mentioned, this use to be the only course within 15 miles, but since I was there, another niner opened up in Franklin. It may not be much better than this course, but it appears any course work that has been done in town, has now gone to that course.

Two Dates With O.J. 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 24, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

(2.652 Rating) A scenic niner that's marked as an 18 hole course.
- MULTIPLE TEES - There are two tees on every hole but hole (4), were that tee is marked as (4/13). The long tees are on holes (1, 11, 3, 13, 5, 15, 7, 17 and 9). Tees (1) and (10) go the same basket, then (2) and (11) to the same basket, and so on. Holes (5), (7) and (11) play exceptionally different than their shorter counterpart.
- UNIQUENESS - There are some really neat holes on this course that likely can only be appreciated by skilled players. Hole (11) is not a hole you see every day. A 500 foot dogleg right that drops 80 feet and can be reached easily by those skilled enough and willing to play Russian roulette. Hole (14) is an awesome chip shot ace run from above on a 40 foot bluff and hooking around the guy wires of an electric pole. Overall the elevation change and usage is very intriguing. The only boring shot IMO is (16), which is an open 120 foot dinker unlike the entire rest of the course.
- CHALLENGING - If playing all front tees, I could see a Recreational player digging the layout. Playing all the back tees may scare many of those players away due to holes (7) and (11). I appreciated the amount of thought I had to put into a few throws.
- RAW BEAUTY - If I Ignore the somewhat unkempt conditions for my appearance, this course has a very beautiful rustic charm in spots. I scored the course a 3 out of 5 overall.
- CHAINS - DISCatcher Baskets.

Cons:

This course is not for everyone.
- HOLE 4 - Throwing this hole is like allowing your daughter to date OJ. Against better judgment, I grabbed a sacrificial disc and threw. Sure enough, what I feared, happened. The hole has a couple 4 foot wide lines at best, halfway down fairway. Normally I'll give a pass on a course if it has one such occurrence, but I did not for this course. The issue is the slope of the fairway which is at a 45 degree angle side to side. Any disc ricocheting to the right has the potential to be lost down the perilous slope and into the thick overgrowth. I was very fortunate that my ricochet promptly smacked into a second tree squarely and dropped straight down. This is the only hole without two tees. So for those playing all 17 tees, they would wind up tempting fate here twice.
- MAINTENANCE - The course did not appear to be well tendered to on my appearance. Lots of shaggy fairways and the likely off-fairway collection areas were thick with poison ivy, weeds and thorns. In addition the signage and tee conditions need to be addressed again.
- TEES - They are usually defined by heavy timbers on the edges and then an attempt was made to flatten them with dirt in the center. I'm sure they were just fine at one point, but it does not appear upkeep has happened in several years. Several are uneven or pitting.
- FORGIVENESS - The disc loss potential on this course is much higher than normal. I would love to see a gunslinger attempt to eagle hole (11, aka Alt 2). A poor throw fading right will land into the forested abyss. Many players likely won't even attempt to look for it. As noted above, hole (4) is going to claim discs, but it's far from clear sailings even after that hole.
- TERRAIN - I could not recommend this course to those with walking issues. Walking up to tee (14), is steeper than stairs
- TIME PLAY - I knew this was listed as nine holes stepping out of the car and figured to myself 30 minutes tops. An hour later the bag went back into the car and I only threw 9 holes. The navigational aspect was ok, but the minutes added up due to the terrain and searching in the thicket 5 feet off fairway.
- BEGINNER FRIENDLY - If you are a newer player, do not come here. You will hate it. Please go Macon Middle School instead.

Other Thoughts:

There are some things on this course that players just won't see every day. On the flip-side, the lack of maintenance and brutal-ness of a few holes will keep newer players from ever returning. It's a good thing that the middle school course was just built, because that course will coddle players long enough to enjoy the sport to perhaps finally find the courage to tackle a mini beast of a course like this one. Players in the area with at least an 875 rating, give or take, looking for unique plays and are ok with the occasional brutal rough, will be entertained. Lower skilled players in the area should check out the other course in town instead if they need a disc golf fix.
- HOLE 7 - A horrible hole standing on the tee for the first time. It's a forced overtop from the back tees, but a first timer like myself will have no idea on what to do. I put my disc back into the bag and walked down a path of the supposed fairway to see what I could find. After walking 225 feet, of which the last 100 feet of this was through heavy woods, I stumbled upon a clearing and the basket. It's a much cooler hole now knowing the landing zone, but a vacationing first timer won't get it the first time through.
- NAVIGATION - Passable. No course map on site, but there are several navigational cues between holes. My biggest hic-up was between (6) and (7) as the new long placement had no arrows indicating a backtrack down (6) fairway.

It's aesthetically pleasing if you ask me. 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 26, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

-I came up here just to kill time. My car failed inspection because of a minor computer issue. So the guys at the shop told me to drive about 70 miles over the weekend. I decided last minute just to go here. And I was overwhelmed to say at the least. Course has two sets of tee-pads on every hole except for one hole (#4).

-The dual sets of tees don't only give good variety in hole length, but some of the second tees show a totally different hole. #5 is an open field shot off the road. Hole is very straightforward, but the view of the land makes it seem fun. The second pad (or should I say #14) is a downhill ace run off the hillside. Definitely one of the signature holes in my opinion. Any new player would love this hole from that pad. #7 is also different. One of the pads is just a simple uphill ace run (120') around a tree. The long pad (which is actually hole 7) is a forced spike hyzer over a giant cluster of trees. That's right OVER the trees.

-Course is well marked and pretty easy to navigate. If you want to play 18 holes, just go by the tee signs. There are nine baskets but the huge land makes it seem like 18 holes with those extra tee-pads.

-My favorite hole was #11. Or hole 2 long. Hole is over 500' long, but so significantly downhill, that it could be reached from the tee. But that would be a serious risk. The hole is an open bomb with thick overgrowth to the right of the fairway. The basket is tucked down a VERY steep hill. The short pad is like 400' and gives a better look at the basket. It's very similar to #12 at Bradford Park up near Charlotte. You just want to get into the wooded area. If you love #12 at Bradford, I seriously think you'll love this hole even more. But you'll want to play this hole with a friend.

-Land is quite large, so if they wanted, this could be a legit 18 hole course. I'd be in full support of that, but if it stays the same, that's cool too.

-A place where I could take my little sister to. She's eleven and is an avid reader; her reading level is seriously higher than mine. There is a bookstore here that was open the Sunday I played as far as I am concerned. So if you like to read and play disc golf (I only like one of those lol!) this is your getaway place.

Cons:

I have a LOT of take it or leave it suggestions for this course:

-I don't think #7 is a great hole, as unique as it may be throwing over 30' tall trees. Take it or leave it, the tee pad could be pushed back. Look behind the tee-pad and you'll see a gigantic hill going up. Push the tee-pad back and make a killer elevated tee shot. That would be insanely cool. I know that it would maybe be harder to cross those trees, but you could lay up and throw down maybe where the pad currently is.

-I lost a trespass on #11. Wanted to make an eagle, I didn't. I learned my lesson, but the overgrowth all along to the right is pretty severe.

-The walk from #4 to #5 can be difficult. Especially in the rain considering the fact you are walking down the small cliff.

-Holes 5 and 6 play along the pedestrian walking trail. But both holes are great, so it doesn't matter to me. But it may matter to you.

Other Thoughts:

-#4 seems to be that "love it or hate it" hole. It's the only hole with no second pad so if you play 18 holes, you'll play this one twice. It's very wooded and dangerous to the right side so if you have a big arm like I do, you might want to jump putt, but if you have less distance, you should still probably throw a putter. One that's more over stable. Want my opinion? I think it's an awesome ace run.

-Another "take it or leave it" would be for hole 4. I love the hole. But since there isn't a second pad, I think maybe there could be another basket. Maybe a double decker tee could be made and there could be a basket down the cliff, making a fun drop shot of a hole that goes out of the woods. It'd be hard to make a fairway because of the steep downhill, but I would definitely do it if I had that option to.

-A few of the previous reviewers said that this is an ugly course. That is one of the dumbest things that I have read. This is a majestic course up in the mountains, and I wish I played it sooner. I didn't think it was only 25 miles from WCU. Will be back. And will be back soon!

Pros:

- Variety of shots (uphill, downhill, along a cliff, wooded)
- Nice baskets
- Kiosk with map and information about a league
- Mountain views
- Elevation
- Not crowded

Cons:

- Natural tee boxes
- Maintenance could be better
- Hard to find some tee boxes

Other Thoughts:

Played this course while on vacation. As a newer player, I found a couple of the holes challenging. #4 is a shot along a cliff that drops about 15-20 feet to a walking trail. The hole is heavily wooded and seems to be more a matter of luck than anything else. #7 long tee was a long shot over tall trees in a ravine. I also found #2 challenging.

The course needed to be mowed. The grass was high and the long tee on #6 was over waist high in grass and unplayable. I wasn't able to locate the short tee on #5. Lots of very high grass and bushes in the rough. Looks like some discs could be lost here.

Overall, I enjoyed the course. I played the full 18 (short and long tees). The views are good, and I liked the elevation changes. I will return to play this course again in the future when I am in the area.

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 26, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The course seems to have come a long way since the first few reviews. There have been long tees added for a majority of the holes and short tees too. I was pleased to see that course was in great shape and very playable(not one disc lost!). The local dg'ers have been doing most of the maintenance on the course and it looks like they are taking pride in their work.

Cons:

By the looks of the layout there seems to be a large amount of room around the existing holes to put more holes. Some of the holes seem kinda bland and need more trees or obstacles.

Other Thoughts:

If this course could draw more backing from the community I believe they could have something really special!

It's a solid course...when Mowed 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 18, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- It's got a nice variety of shots that go from wide (Holes 1,5,6) open, to uphill (3), downhill (2), wooded (4) and it, short (7,8,9).
-It now has Long tees for most holes making some holes very challenging.
-Some holes favor righties, some favor lefties, so a variety of shots can help.
- It's a quick play, a group of 3 or 4 can plow through easily in an hour or less

Cons:

- at times the rough can be overgrown, BUT the franklin community of disc golfers have done lots of leg work to improve the course adding in benches/steps/and keeping it mowed.

- Water is in play on 5 and 6, and even if you did get it in the creek, the creek can be tricky to get into and also discs tend to move away quickly in it.

Other Thoughts:

This course has seen marked improvement from the community, sunday doubles and it's fairly well maintained all by the players, and it's gotten a lot better, i've moved it to a three star review simply because it's generally playable now.

Not as Bad as I thought based on its disc score 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 18, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

- That it's There. Franklin is an extremely small town in an isolated portion of the state. Having an entry level course in the region is a great thing for a small community, especially when it's attached to the local high school (or Early College).
- Nature Trail Disc Golf Information. A few years ago, I created the Nature Trail Disc Golf Course concept where I added nature messaging to the tee-signs and scorecards on a course I designed. Thus, I was ecstatic to see that the tee-sign posts had nature information on them. It appears as though the school kids (presumably) painted animals and plants on the tee-sign posts (complete with their names and Latin names) so people could identify common species -- White Oak: Quercas alba, Red-Tailed Hawk: Buteo jamaicensis (which I saw plenty of both). Each tee sign had 4 species on it. Way to go Macon Early College!
- Great Use of Barren Land. The course was built on an unwanted piece of land which turns out to be great for disc golf. A lot more could be done with the land if they ever wanted to expand the course to a full 18, or redesign some of the holes.
- That it's NOT as Bad as it's Disc Score Indicates. Based on the course's DGCR disc score, I would have never driven all the way to Franklin to specifically bag this course. I just happened to be in town for a badminton tournament and, being a course bagger, I had to bag the course. Glad I did. Although not great, this course is way better that a ½ disc or 1 disc.

Cons:

- Hole 4. Besides not really having a great "FAIRway", Hole 4 played on an extremely steep hillside with a small cliff / drop off at the right edge of it (potentially dangerous). I threw a decent shot and got a bad roll (kind of hard to prevent) and almost went off the cliff.
- Kiosk Placement. As you walk from the parking lot, you can clearly see the kiosk, with a tee-pad right behind it. However, that's Hole 2... Hole 1's tee-pad is back near the parking lot (along the dirt road that leads to the kiosk). Why didn't they put the kiosk near Hole 1?

Other Thoughts:

- Tall Grass. According to the park personnel, they had just mown the week before I arrived, so I did not have any troubles. However, if I had played here a week earlier, it might have been a different story. My enjoyment of the course would have been far less and my disc score reflected in that. I imagine that in the summer it gets overgrown and that during the rest of the year the course plays fine.
- Overall. I enjoyed Early Macon College's disc golf course a lot more than I expected (based on its disc score). A few of the holes were pretty decent, offering great risk reward opportunities and utilizing property features well (elevation and thick rough). I certainly wasn't mad at the course and would probably even play it again the next time I'm in Franklin for a Badminton Tourney.
- My Score: -4

Old Siler Farm DGC 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 7, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is the only 9 hole course in the area spanning out a wide radius. There are 9 baskets here and 9 distinct holes. The individual holes themselves aren't horrible- they are not repetitive, offer challenges of tight fairways, open/woods, long/short. #4 was interesting as it is basically along the top of the cliff. #5 and #6 are along the greenway by the river, but the river is not in play- the rough will eat it first!

There was a map on the kiosk (turned out to be very useful.) Some of the baskets had faint arrows point to the next tee.

The holes are very spread out and you will probably have the course to yourself.

Cons:

This course had too many: A quick summary of it is it was really difficult to navigate, without a map it would be impossible, super tall grass everywhere, no next tee signs, and more frustrating than fun.

The course is set on an unattractive piece of land that looked like a forgotten wasteland in places and sometimes smelled of sewage- a disappointment as you are surrounded by the Appalachian Mtns. everywhere you look.

Tall grass was everywhere, and the fairways, were very narrow and just mowed in a sea of tall thick grass- without a spotter I would have lost several discs and we still had trouble at times. The "paths" between holes also had tall grass- several times there were no paths- basically mowed fairway islands in the middle of a field of tall grass and there are long walks to each hole and the next hole is never in sight of the previous one.

The hole by the public garden and greenway by the river smelled like sewage.

There was a map on kiosk that I took a picture of and had to refer to it several times, there were a couple of spots where we felt lost in the middle of nowhere and if we had no map we would have been wondering around because there is greenway path and a couple dirt roads that added to the confusion as some times they are the path and sometimes they are not. There was no path to hole #4, too many choices after #6 looking for #7, and the path to #9 was a good rain away from disappearing.

Missing tee signs for #1? #6 was pointed the wrong way (towards #8 at the top of an overgrown mountain, so don't panic like I did and think the hole is impossible, the correct basket is the logical one you see on flat ground.

Hole #4, evan though the cliff is unique, is dangerous because the fairway just drops off ~20' on the right.

Other Thoughts:

This was one of the worst courses and disc golf experiences I have ever had. It took a long time to play 9 short holes- tough to find the next hole, tough to get to the next hole, tough to find discs- uggghhh! If someone were to play this course as their first course, they would probably never play disc golf again as it is way more frustrating than it is fun. I have played run down or poorly designed courses that at least has some element of enjoyability, but this course offered very little.

It may be a whole lot better in the winter season when the tall stuff is gone or thinned out, but I would not recommend anybody playing this course in the summer. (the pics already uploaded were taken in winter, I added a few to show what it looks like in the summer.)

My immediate thought was to give this a 0.5, but playing a 2nd round would have eased a few frustrations and the course was probably at its worst condition during the time of year I played so I decided to go with a 1.0, but even at its best it would still be no better than a 2.0 if that.

For locals this course is all you have and navigation is not as big of an issue after the first round. Out-of-towners- this is NOT where you want to play in NC, there are too many excellent courses to waste your time here.

The kiosk called this course "Old Siler Farm Disc Golf". Hole 1 and the parking area is to the left and behind the Cecil L. Groves Center, which is the building on the left once you enter the complex. Also, Macon Early College is for advanced high school students, and not a multi-building complex you would expect with most colleges.

Updated Info 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 15, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

New tee boxes have been made on holes 3, 4, 8 and 9. Tee # 8 should be finished this weekend. Tees have been built by local disc golfers and we have also see that the course has been mowed and trails have been weed wacked to make finding everything easier.

Cons:

The course is very short and many discs have ended up in the river. Not to worry, make sure your information is on your disc and you should get a call when its fished out of the river.

Other Thoughts:

Come on over and see the new improvements the course is coming together and be on the look out for more upgrades to come. There has been a lot of talk about alternate tee boxes to have a full 18 holes.

unplayable 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 4, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Not much good to say but the two holes without four foot grass everywhere ( holes 4, 5,) were pretty good. Hole 4 is a fun short hole, with a nice left to right tight fairway.Hole 5 has a nice placement with the rushing river right behind it.

Cons:

Holes 1,2,3,6,7,8,9 all have fairways that havent been touch since last year. They are unplayable, unless you enjoy finding your disc in four feet grass.

Other Thoughts:

I loves this course last year but I guess that who ever was incharge of the course, is not in charge anymore.

good potential 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 1, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Elevation change, scenery, location

Cons:

We need to organize more support and get this course up to par!

Other Thoughts:

I organized the implementation of these 9 baskets after over a year of designing and changing locations several times (due to different factors) . The college and county are into devoting more and adjacent land to a back 9, all we are really lacking are the baskets to claim the area. I moved to Denver just after getting the last of the 9 baskets and signs (except for 1) installed. I left the course in the hands of disc golf extraordinaire Joe Davis. If anyone is interested in helping Joe work on the tee pads, installing long tees, working on fairways or anything else, please contact FRiends Of the Greenway (FROG), Franklin, NC.

A work in progress 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 15, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

The best part about the course is it is an area that is Disc Golf deprived. The nearest course to this community is more than 30 minutes away and there are a decent amount of players in the area. It's also located near to a small community college, which could grow the number of players in the area.

It's a short, technical course and you can get a round of nine in about a half hour. Nice views and you play close to the river but the river doesn't really come into play.

A few challenging holes and you can tell, when playing, that when the course 'grows up', it has the potential to become much nicer than it is right now.

Cons:

It's very short and not well kept up...right now. The park itself is a work in progress. It appears that once funding and time allows, the park and the course will be really nice.

There's a few spots on the course where its not quite clear which direction the next tee is.

Other Thoughts:

Franklin, NC is a great town for a weekend get away. There's a performing arts center that brings in great shows, a gigantic fun center that kids will love and lots of great restaurants.

Franklin is the Gem Capitol and there are a lot of gem mining for the kids (and adults too) and it you like hiking or kayaking, you'll love this part of Western NC

has great potential for a great course 2+ years drive by

Pros:

Pros: I have heard about this course for about a month and was fairly close to my home (about 40 mins). But there was no info really on the course. So I decided to go gather some info for every one on here and in the surrounding area. So I took some pics and hopefully my review will help out some people if they ever go and play this course.
Ok so here we go
Hole 1 220ft was a pretty easy hyzer shot with the basket in between 3 big trees
Hole 2 310ft was a downhill flick shot with a small drop off about 20 feet away from the basket
Hole 3 250ft strait uphill shot with a wide opening so you can easily do whatever kind of shot you would like and be fairly close to the basket
After hole 3 there is a small path to the right of the basket shown in one of my pics
Hole 4 190 ft was a very tight wooded and angled downhill shot hard for beginners.
Hole 5 325ft was a strait wide open shot to the basket next to the river. Be careful not to over shoot your shot because it will go into the water
Hole 6 383ft got some distance on it but very manageable. The whole hole is next to the river so make sure you don't go to far right.
Go up the hill to find hole 7
Hole 7 120ft oh yes an easy ace hole lol. I threw for about 15 mins trying to get an ace until my friends decided they didn't want to wait any more. But I did hit the basket twice.
Hole 8 158ft this is a slightly up hill shot with 3 or 4 trees in the way short and sweet.
Go up the path for hole 8 right of the basket and follow to the left of the path and you will find a tee behind a tree
Hole 9 175ft right behind a tree slightly uphill and to the right

Cons:

The directions were wrong to the course. I was lucky enough to know the area somewhat and followed the signs to the college. The tee pads... well lack of tee pads. There natural as of right now and I'm not sure if they're going to change but there's no limits to where you throw. I didn't know if they wanted me to stand to the left of the post or the right of the post. There are no signs to the next tee's I just kind of got lucky finding hole 4. Hole 4 is really tight and if you go to the right of the fair way you end up about 120 drop off. Its also really easy to roll off a disc on that hole. Hole 5 confused me where to throw from so I just threw from the concrete. In the middle of hole 6 there is some type of massive crater with a huge sewer drain were if you get a disc down there you don't want to go and get it. Hole 7 is super fun but if you over shoot you will have to go through a brier patch to get your discs and yes it hurts. It is also not to fun to find hole 9 tee pad.

Other Thoughts:

overall it's a nice course that is in its beginner stages. They have plenty of growing room for new holes. I will probably come back again just to concur hole 7 to get an ace :p and see new improvements on the course. But in whole this course was fun I did enjoy myself and any time I am up that way I will play again.
