Not a destination course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 1, 2016 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Wide open so new players can learn. Lots of ace runs if you like that kind of thing. The longer holes are fun to play. Speed golf is good to play here and you can bring your dog for an easy walk. Great course to learn on for beginners

Cons:

This course is more of a community course. I would not go out of my way to play it. I live pretty close and when I was new, it was fun for me because I got to learn a lot, but the more I played the more I realized I needed more challenges. No tee boxes, just posts and throw from grass. Very short, even the long tees are short for a lot of better players. There is a baseball field to contend with on a couple holes, we have disrupted a couple practices with errant discs.

Great for casual or practice 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 26, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This is a mostly open course, great for casual or practice rounds. It is very open for the most part, holes 1-10 are basically in a lightly rolling field. There are a few young trees peppered about, and one row of older trees around holes 7 and 8. The back 9 have more tree cover for more practical shot practice. This being my local course, I can say the wind can get wild. It can go from calm to gusty fairly quick, and being so open the wind really effects strategy and disc/shot placement. #8, 15, 17, and 18 are my favorites. Overall pretty good for a fun round or two that won't take too long to play.

Cons:

Not much difference between pro/am tees other than distance. Only a few holes are effected strategically by the distance difference. Grass tees get a bit slick even on just a humid day (and it can get really humid). You'll get sunburned easy if your not careful, very little shade.

Other Thoughts:

I like this course. It offers opportunity to practice distance and touch. If you struggle with wind, play here a few times, you will improve. Good local course for quick/casual/glow playing.

Welcome to the Great Wide Open! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 20, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

If you're sick of trees, this place is for you. It's wide open with very little tree coverage. Grip it and rip it, and say hello to the wind! It's a feel good course with little to no thrills.

Cons:

It's the exact opposite of the pros, its wide open, and very little tree cover and lacks character. Slightly hard to navigate, but use your head and open your eyes.

Other Thoughts:

I've played it, it was a nice change of pace but I don't see myself play Middletown Park again.

Middle or slightly less than 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 31, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

18 holes with two natural tees. There is some signage, not hard to navigate. Can be played as two loops to the parking lot. Great for beginners and as a practice course. The surrounding mountains with the lake is in the backdrop is pretty. There was a giant crane in the lake while I played to 10's basket.

Cons:

Natural tees and mud. Not much challenge unless it's windy. Mostly flat. Might be confusing first time playing with many baskets being visible in field from tees.

Other Thoughts:

The front 10 is a just a wide open flat field that I would expect to see people playing soccer or football on. Maybe it's often too muddy for playing fields, so it's disc golf course. Holes 11-17 provide a little elevation and some trees for challenge. I wouldn't go out of your way to play here, but it's great little course for the local community.

A Walk in the Park - Literally 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 6, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

A picturesque course in the middle (heh) of Middletown, with homes on one side, mountains on the other, and a nice big pond in the middle. Course is mostly open, so it's a good place to try out new discs to see how they fly or work on your rollers.

If you play legit, there are some creative OB areas that will make you at least think a bit about overcooking a hyzer.

Baskets all contain a "next tee" hanger which is reasonably accurate and helpful for a first-time player.

Cons:

Bugs! Bug spray should be mandatory here.

Baskets are old and a bit rusty, but all upright and serviceable.

Some of the more inconsiderate people with dogs (you know the type) don't pick up their dog poop, so watch for that.

Not a lot of shot variety required.

Other Thoughts:

14 and 16 share tee areas.

If you get unlucky and huck it into the enclosed trash corral on 6 (I think), fear not, there's space in the back of the corral to squeeze in and retrieve your disc.

Niceties Added Recently 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 21, 2012 Played the course:once

Other Thoughts:

Next tee directional signs and hole layout signs have been added since my last visit and I want to clap for the volunteers who did that. At most courses hole layout signs are posted on or near the rearmost tee but here they are on the forward tees without exception. That seems humorous until you realize that here on most every trek from last-basket to next-tee you will come upon the forward tee first. The "Next Tee" directional arrow clipped to basket #1 is comically wrong but after that they are spot on until basket #11. The tees are so widely separated on #13 there is no effective way to point you in a general direction to both. The tees here are marked only by a wooden post. I once heard righties should play from right of the post and lefties from left of the post but the new hole maps say nothing about that and I've not seen it documented anywhere. As a rightie that adds about the only challenge here, otherwise it is mostly grip it and rip it x 18.

Not too shabby 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 19, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Pretty simple course with few bells and whistles. Its a free course, and has some minor elevation change. We played all the holes as Par 3 and finished even par. When the wind kicks up though it could get a little interesting.

It did have a couple of interesting holes though like hole 17. Its tucked back in a little cove. It has a tunnel about 80 feet long and about 15 feet wide. with a hard sharp left hand turn.

Cons:

Overall a plain jane course. There are not many gimmicks to it, but still a pretty fun course.

Great Beginner Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 15, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Beautiful park in a beautiful valley. This is not a very difficult course by any means, but there is some variety on 11-18. It is well maintained (new signage as of 5-2012) Park in the lot near the lake and you will see the practice basket and 1st tee. Two tees for each hole. Great course for run and shoot. About 2 miles of running involved.

Cons:

Virtually no change in elevation. Holes 2 - 6 are mostly wide open and can be subject to some pretty strong winds. There are no T pads, but the ground is very level and it really probably doesn't need them. Sometimes the grass is too high.
Lot's of poison ivy along holes15-17...still scratching.

Other Thoughts:

This is a GREAT course to learn on, and to introduce new golfers to the sport. There are few really tricky obstacles so new golfers are less likely to get frustrated. Even if you are an experienced DG'er, this is a good course to build a little confidence and air it out!

First time at course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 23, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

Once you figure out where you start at it is a pretty easy to figure out course layout. The wooden posts point in the direction of the pin. At least 98% of the time. The holes are fairly easy for the most part and is a great course for all skill levels. The first 6 holes are pretty easy straight holes. They are good for testing new drivers or if you just want to rip it. Luckily there was another golfer there to explain how the tees worked. Otherwise i would have been lost. It seemed like the course was well maintained.

Cons:

There is no sign or anything telling where the course starts. I almost missed hole 17...actually i did at first. It was hidden in the forest.

Other Thoughts:

Don't go near the bird house on holes 8/9. There is an angry, dive-bombing bird in it. Hole 4, just to the left of the pin, out-of-bounds....if you find a green cheetah, enjoy it. I couldn't find it.

If it's on your way? 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 5, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

I guess you can say course is fairly well maintained.

It's free so there's a plus

Cons:

Portions of the front nine are basically a swamp if it has rained recently. So bring your boots.

Virtually no obstacles on the front nine.

Front nine is basically an open field so I can imagine it would be kinda annoying to play with just a couple groups. They are also not labeled at all so it is hard to determine where you are throwing on a couple holes or where the next tee is.

A few of the baskets are not in the best condition.

Other Thoughts:

It is a good place to test your drive without any fear of loosing a disc.

Middletown Park 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 26, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

All holes are par 3. Recommend using the blue tees.

On front 9, only holes 1, 8, and 9 have tree obstacles. Other holes on front 9 are straight shots. Good opportunity to throw hard on the straight holes.

Most holes on back 9 have obstacles.

Holes are shorter on back 9. Hole 16 is a realistic chance for an ace.

Almost no chance of losing discs on this course.

Course was very clean. Scenic with Maryland mountains and local farms in the background.

Recommend having a map for first time players. Tees can be a little hard to find.

Cons:

Don't quite understand why there aren't more obstacles on front 9. Field must have multi-purpose use.

Wear bug spray. A lot of gnats.

Front 9 has some pedestrian traffic due to adjacent recreation fields and pond.

Other Thoughts:

Judging this course on its own merits, and not comparing it to other established courses, it is very good for what it is. A course in a multi-purpose rural park. A park that was probably corn fields 20 years ago.

It's definitely worth playing, but would not make a lengthy trip just for this course.

I tied it in with a hike at a local State Park. Made for a good day of outdoor activities.

Plan to play course again when I visit the area.

My Practice Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 25, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Good practice for driving.

- Always some sort of wind, which can suck, but hey: we all need our practice with that.

- Pretty on the back nine.

Cons:

- While you should be able to finish the front nine in twenty minutes, it is doubtful you ever will. The pedestrian traffic along with cross country events, park goings on and car traffic will have you waiting time and time again.

- Most of the holes are just plain straight shots. This gets very boring.

- End of Summer and Fall seasons there are tons of stink bugs. I actually had one upset a putt the other day. Now my disc stinks and my putt stank even more.

Other Thoughts:

Do not travel long distances for this course; you will be disappointed. I only go there as much as I do because it's on my way home from work and it really is good for daily practice. If you're looking for a challenge, this is the wrong place.

The park itself seems to be located on a route that leads to a heavily populated neighborhood. This can be good and bad. Good because it allows more people to become curious about our sport and hopefully try it out. Bad because there will be young teens who honk, yell and just raise hell to make you screw up. Nice, right?

Waste Of A Trip 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 3, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Couldn't find too many good things about this place...

Cons:

Very high grass

Poorly maintained

Insects were horrible

No maps what-so-ever to show you where each basket was

Lots of confusion

Other Thoughts:

I wouldn't recommend this course to anyone outside a 15 minute drive. I drove about an hour to play this course. Total waste of time and the traffic is absolutely awful in this area. Any throw short of perfect ended up turning into a 15 minute hunt in the insanely high grass. The 27 hole disaster was cut short to only 9 for me. I couldn't stand to play that course any more after the first loop.

Windy 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 25, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course was fairly decent. About a third of the holes provided somewhat of a challenge with a couple tree hazards on holes 11 and 12. There were a couple 400 and 500 foot holes which were nice.

Cons:

Most holes were either straight on to the basket or had a slight dogleg to the left. So my under stable discs didn't get much use. Some of the other reviewers had mentioned poison ivy, that was a bit of an understatement. Any disc landing in the woodline was sitting in thick poison ivy.
Would have had a he'll of a time navigating the course in the 98 degree heat if I didn't bring a map. A lot of holes zig zag and you even have to back track on a few.

Other Thoughts:

Not sure if it is always windy there or if it was my lucky day but the wind was dominating most of my throws and made putting an adventure.
This course is a nice change of pace from heritage farms and the woodsboro courses, but I wouldn't say better.

cute course, but lacks wow. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 19, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Nice park with isolated from other activities
2 tee pads for each basket
Nice variety of distances 218-540 ft.
Warnings about where poison ivy was the worst.
Restrooms up by baseball diamond (hole 15)
Map and Score card available at Kiosk.
Course is beginner friendly (assuming they stay away from the poison ivy)
Park is attractive with water fountain in lake, flowers, and manicured lawns.

Cons:

Poison ivy is really bad, but Dave Becker was out spraying trying to keep it undercontrol.
No tee pads, just 2 posts with numbers.
No tee signs.
A lot of straight open shots.

Other Thoughts:

Hole 15 pro tee is overgrown and the only shot left is a tomahawk or a thumber.
Water is intimidating on hole 10, but not necessarily in play.
Course is nice, but not exciting to play. I would love to have a course like this nearby, but I would still sneak out to play near by Heritage and Woodsboro.

It was difficult to think of many pros or cons for this course, it was a nice 18, but not anything very memorable to set it apart from other courses. 2.5 is "decent and typical" which describes this course well.

Beginner Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 16, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Hey baskets are a good thing, no matter where they are!!
This course is great for exposure purposes - offering a not too difficult course into an area where course density is fairly low (until recently). It's an easy walk, with little chance of losing a disc. Also has some good local folks always willing to lend a hand, or offer some instruction. Location is in a nice neighborhood park - always a plus.

Cons:

Natural tees, and a lack of good signs make the course a little difficult to find the first time - and a little difficult to "discover" for the newbie, just due to lack of information.

Other Thoughts:

This course in Frederick County, MD served as a spring board for other local parks to install their own DG courses. And now there are 2 more that have gone in in the last 3 years within about 10 miles.

Great for beginners 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 1, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course is excellent for beginners. While visiting my parents in Boonsboro over the holidays, I picked a cold and windy morning to check out this course.

The wide open holes will allow the beginner to get a feel of the game and not worry about losing a disc.

Several holes on the back nine, especially #17, offer a nice obstacle challenge.

The park is beautiful -- very picturesque and set in a nice neighborhood.

Cons:

Holes 1-6 are boring -- grip it and rip it.

The location of the "tees" and the proper basket are tough to figure out the first time through.

The "tees" are grass.

Several of the baskets are bent and in mediocre shape.

Other Thoughts:

If you're an experienced disc golf player, skip holes #1 through #6. The course gets more interesting starting with hole #7.

However, I will definitely come back to this course next time I'm in Maryland to introduce my father and brother to the great game of disc golf.
