Pros:
- temporary baskets are visible and catch well despite one layer of chains
- navigation is pretty straightforward and flows well
- good for beginners just picking up the sport
- next tee direction tape on baskets
- tee signs are temporary but decent for a temp course
- dual tees
- typical park amenities such as parking, garbage cans, porta potties
- mostly disc golf specific area in this multi-use park
- some notable distance for a temporary/nine hole course
- hole numbers on baskets
- fairly well maintained park
Cons:
- entirely flat
- very few obstacles and virtually no challenge
- natural tees
- long walks between some holes seem unnecessary
- a few holes play closer than desirable to busy road, especially for beginners
- no real draw besides introducing newbies to the sport
- not much in the way of forced lines/shot selection
- the limited trees on the course are very young and don't add much
Other Thoughts:
Miller Meadow is nothing to write home about, and I suspect few would disagree. This is a partnership between Disc Golf Chicago and Cook County Forest Preserve to test out disc golf in the forest preserve. I'm glad they are doing this as Chicago proper does not have much disc golf. This course is a nice way to introduce new players to the sport. That's really the main perk to this setup.
It's sad how few trees there are in some of our "forest preserves" in the Chicago area. Granted, this is "Miller Meadow", and there are some nice natural areas being revitalized for prairie plants and birds/butterflies. This doesn't make for the best disc golf but it is still noteworthy.
The course itself is very open with not much of interest to speak about. The lengths from the longs are surprisingly respectable, but I'm not sure why there are such long lengths between some of the holes. The tee signs here are pretty decent for a temporary course.
I'm not sure if this course is likely to stay long-term, and I'm not even sure if it should. As an experiment, it's fine, but I would hope Cook County could find better, more wooded areas of the forest preserve for permanent installations. I felt I needed to give this course a 1.5 because there's really nothing wrong with it that warrants going down to a 1, but any experienced player is going to be pretty bored with this one.
I didn't see another soul playing this course and besides the league nights and clinics for newbies, I'd expect this course to be pretty empty. Some of the grass clippings from mowing were a bit thick and there was more trash than I'd like to see on this course, but otherwise it was in decent shape. I do worry about the busy road near a few of the holes, especially with beginners grip locking or similar. It's not that close, but still.
Overall - skip this one unless you must bag them all. Bring your friends new to the sport if you want, but even then I think there are better places to show them why disc golf is fun. I like what they are doing with this to try to expand the number of courses available but this just isn't terribly exciting in any way.
