Modest Minnis measures up

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 8, 2024 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

With the addition of its second course in as many years, the city of Cleveland can now boast about Minnis Hollow, which offers an excellent layout that hits the sweet spot of challenging without being difficult and enjoyable without being a complete birdie-fest.

Minnis Hollow does a good job of getting the little things right and includes a practice basket and a large map sign near the course's entrance. The holes include good signage, level concrete teepads, uncrowded baskets, mostly straight-forward navigation and a pleasant mixture of hole designs.

The variety of the course is one of the highlights. I tend to use most of the discs in my bag during a round at Minnis Hollow, which calls for a variety of throws that might even include a roller or skip shot. There are multiple lines to consider on several holes. The course leans toward being more open than heavily wooded, but the trees on the open holes are utilized well, and the handful of heavily wooded holes still offer fair lines. The distance per hole averages about 280 feet, and the few ace runs are matched by several 300-foot-plus holes.

An undervalued aspect at Minnis is pin location. Nearly every basket is strategically placed to optimize the challenge while squeezing out the best possible holes for the land that was available. In addition, the course is in an area dedicated to disc golf and isn't likely to see non-disc golf traffic.

As a critic of poorly designed holes, I'm thrilled to report that Minnis Hollow dosen't have any bad holes. There are no gimmicky shapes, unfair holes, or dangerous designs.

The baskets are Prodigy, but they seem to catch well. The baskets' yellow banner tricks users into thinking they are Discatchers, anyway.

Cons:

The course plays near some wetland areas and while they shouldn't come into play much, that land is quite boggy in spots and errant throw retrievals won't be much fun.

As it currently stands, there is a lot of standing at Minnis. An older couple that I recently encountered on Hole #1 said they will be happier when there are more benches on the course.

Hole #18 is a "tweener" for many disc golfers – it's about 350 feet slightly uphill into a small gap in the woods – and it will produce more bogeys than birdies. I certainly don't mind tough par 3s, but it's a bit disappointing the course ends on this hole. The bushes bordering the road on the left have been eliminated, allowing for the humorous possibility that a grip-locked drive results in a "WTF Richard?!" moment.

With the limits on land, it's understandable the course has only one par 4. But if the space had been available, a few more par 4s would have been awesome.

The course doesn't have permanent restrooms or trash cans at this time.

Other Thoughts:

Minnis Hollow offers good scenery and even better variety. It's quickly become one of my favorite courses in the area, due partially to my appreciation for how different every hole is.

Kudos to the designer, Justin Spears. He did a great job with the palette available. I hope his talent and eye for solid design is utilized more in the Greater Chattanooga area.

Pleasantly Surprised

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 4, 2024 Played the course:once

Pros:

Quiet, serene, no outside noise, all holes dedicated to dg, very well manicured, easy to navigate, variety of hole types. Open holes, wooded holes, good practice basket. Tees , signs, baskets all new. Small elevation throughout the track.
This course is one of the better intermediate community course that I have played. If I lived in the area, I would play regularly.

Cons:

This is not an advanced track.

Other Thoughts:

This course is very good for beginners and intermediates. Advanced players will have fun but it would be a birdie fest.
