I've been interested in playing Mountain Crest since our first visit to Vegas 7 years ago. At that time, this and Sunset Park were the only 18, or more, hole courses in the area. The course map makes it look like the course is squeezed into a small park with lots of dog walkers, so I was curious how well that interaction worked. After playing here, the course layout is a good reason it is still here. In most cases, the tees were put near the walking path, with the baskets set further away from the path and often playing away from the path. Mountain Crest serves as a good model of how these interactions can be minimized with good design.
The elevation on the Front 8 (plus #10) are due to a ridgeline, running west to east across the northern section of the park. #1 starts out up a gauntlet of trees, then over the ridge to a hidden basket. #7, #8 and #10 also use this ridge, up, then down to their hidden baskets. Nice to see this elevation used this way.
Then on the backside of the course, a smaller ridge running north to south, between the walking path and the neighboring street, has the fairways for #12, #13 and the start of #14. #14 tees from this "elevation" down to the basket in a swale of great grass.
Speaking of good grass, nearly every hole plays on grass, kept green by irrigation. In playing courses in desert environments, there is often the urge to plant a basket in the bordering rocks and sand, most likely to lengthen the hole. I believe there are only three holes here that use the "natural" terrain as part of the fairway or green. Another great design element, remind you where you are, but don't overdo it.
After finding the 18th tee (
), its actually a pretty good finishing hole. Not long at 257', it features some tall brush on the left, right after the tee, then the right side is bordered by a straight row of shade trees and the parking lot and sidewalk beyond those. I can see this side being lined with spectators as tournaments come down the stretch. The hole is mostly straight with a turn to the left after clearing the brush on the left. I really wanted to finish my round strong with a good drive and run at birdie in front of the other players milling around. Didn't work out that well, but still had a long run at the birdie.
There were a few players in the lot when I got there just before sunrise, luckily I was first off and noticed the next players starting when I was on #5. By the time I made the turn, there were several more starting or warming up (a cold morning in the desert), then when I finished, it looked like there were players on most of the Front side holes and others waiting to start. It didn't look like an event going on, just a popular course to play. I noticed a vehicle logoed up for the LVC in the lot, so this appears to be one of the more popular courses in Vegas. Especially if you don't feel like paying to play at the NLV Discgolfpark or Wildhorse.
With little to no chance of losing a disc, great grass to throw on and a nice variety of holes, I can see why Mountain Crest is so popular. I hope it is around for a long time.
