Old school Vegas course, with upgrades. 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 5, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

Nice park in the middle of a residential area of Las Vegas. The only other activities in this medium sized park are walking paths, picnic shelters, playgrounds and a small community center, so there should not be a lot of interaction with other park users. You do need to be aware of how close you are throwing to the walking path, please be careful of the other park users.
The baskets are in good shape, not the newest, but they catch fine. There is a little elevation in this park, so a couple of hidden baskets do have poles and flags mounted.
The tee signs are good, hole layout, distances, next tee location, but their installation is the best. All the tee signs are mounted on 4 foot high, concrete posts. These are very easy to spot at each tee and I don't think they are going to have to worry about the mowers taking any out!
Concrete tee pads at every hole (just one per hole) that are good sized and level. It looks like several have been redone recently.
The Front 9 (actually 8) are pretty much open holes with young trees requiring some shot shaping. Once these grow, especially the gauntlet on Hole #1, these holes will toughen up quite a bit. The Back 10 are shorter, have some larger trees and are generally more technical.
Good restrooms and shelters right at the First tee, also convenient to #9 tee.

Cons:

While the Front 8 are mostly open, the trees there do have opportunites for Mandos, creating more difficult holes and keeping throws away from the walking path. I did notice what looked like Caution tape around a couple of trees, if these were indicating Mandos, they need to be labeled as such.
After finishing #17, the route to #18 tee is a little confusing. I ended up walking right up #9 (as a group were ready to tee, nice job Newb!!) and then walked down 18 fairway to get to the tee. Some Next Tee signs around the back of the RR building would be handy.

Other Thoughts:

I've been interested in playing Mountain Crest since our first visit to Vegas 7 years ago. At that time, this and Sunset Park were the only 18, or more, hole courses in the area. The course map makes it look like the course is squeezed into a small park with lots of dog walkers, so I was curious how well that interaction worked. After playing here, the course layout is a good reason it is still here. In most cases, the tees were put near the walking path, with the baskets set further away from the path and often playing away from the path. Mountain Crest serves as a good model of how these interactions can be minimized with good design.
The elevation on the Front 8 (plus #10) are due to a ridgeline, running west to east across the northern section of the park. #1 starts out up a gauntlet of trees, then over the ridge to a hidden basket. #7, #8 and #10 also use this ridge, up, then down to their hidden baskets. Nice to see this elevation used this way.
Then on the backside of the course, a smaller ridge running north to south, between the walking path and the neighboring street, has the fairways for #12, #13 and the start of #14. #14 tees from this "elevation" down to the basket in a swale of great grass.
Speaking of good grass, nearly every hole plays on grass, kept green by irrigation. In playing courses in desert environments, there is often the urge to plant a basket in the bordering rocks and sand, most likely to lengthen the hole. I believe there are only three holes here that use the "natural" terrain as part of the fairway or green. Another great design element, remind you where you are, but don't overdo it.
After finding the 18th tee ( :) ), its actually a pretty good finishing hole. Not long at 257', it features some tall brush on the left, right after the tee, then the right side is bordered by a straight row of shade trees and the parking lot and sidewalk beyond those. I can see this side being lined with spectators as tournaments come down the stretch. The hole is mostly straight with a turn to the left after clearing the brush on the left. I really wanted to finish my round strong with a good drive and run at birdie in front of the other players milling around. Didn't work out that well, but still had a long run at the birdie.
There were a few players in the lot when I got there just before sunrise, luckily I was first off and noticed the next players starting when I was on #5. By the time I made the turn, there were several more starting or warming up (a cold morning in the desert), then when I finished, it looked like there were players on most of the Front side holes and others waiting to start. It didn't look like an event going on, just a popular course to play. I noticed a vehicle logoed up for the LVC in the lot, so this appears to be one of the more popular courses in Vegas. Especially if you don't feel like paying to play at the NLV Discgolfpark or Wildhorse.
With little to no chance of losing a disc, great grass to throw on and a nice variety of holes, I can see why Mountain Crest is so popular. I hope it is around for a long time.

Pros:

Very clean park and a nicely layout course.
The best signage I have seen thus far.
Hearty and super stout professional baskets w/ ample chains.
Great course to work on your game with a couple of short potential ace shots on the back 9.
Not very technical but there were some fun pesky trees out there and fun!
Absolutely would play there again.

Cons:

Nice to have a couple of bathrooms on the course but it was a little icky in the toilets to put it mildly.

Went on a Saturday midday so there was plenty of kiddie birthday parties going on so please use caution.

Classic Park Course, with Some Desert Thrown in 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 5, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

A mostly-open park course with aging amenities, but still great

+ Navigation is mostly intuitive (and helped by uDisc). The only trouble spots I had were finding #2 tee (to the right and backtrack a bit), and #12 (backtrack along the street). #18 is a long walk from the #17 basket, but a local warned me in advance

+ The course starts off with a bang: a narrow alley of trees guarding the uphill first fairway

+ Hole #2 is a nice open bomb with very little trouble to worry about, but then #3 and #4 bring sidewalks into play: creating an island hole on #3, and circling around the back of the green on #4

+ The rest of the front nine continues the pattern of alternating open bomber holes with others made a bit more technical by sidewalk OB and trees guarding approaches

+ Starting with Hole #9, the course takes on a new - and much more technical - personality. There's a winding "desert" planting area, with sand, gravel, low trees and very bushy grasses affecting parts of holes #9 - #13. The course layout uses this park feature really well: to obscure baskets, make for doglegs and create OB hazards

+ #14 and #15 are a pair of short park holes. You won't be able to see this from the tee, but the basket on #14 is surrounded by above-ground roots that will grab your disc and hold it down - so bomb away for the ace and drop it in for a bird

Cons:

- The baskets are getting a bit old, rusty and the cages getting loose on the poles (I noticed a kid monkeying around with the #5 basket). As others have noted, the signage is in pretty bad repair. But even the good ones taking a little getting used to: this is the first time I've come across signs that are satellite photos, and since they're all North-justified it takes a moment to figure out which direction you're facing

- I read a lot about slick teepads in various reviews of Las Vegas courses, and now that I've played here, I get it. The natural coarseness of concrete has been worn down over years of use and temperature extremes, so there's no grip. That makes it especially difficult when there's slant to the pad, like the one on hole #18

Other Thoughts:

~ On a sunny and mild afternoon in early February, Mountain Crest was a great place to play. Friendly local players to point me in the right direction, plenty of interesting park features like beach volleyball and horseshoe pits, clean restrooms, and a classic park course with a few touches of desert

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 25, 2018 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

My have-to stop any time I find myself in Vegas. OB is used very effectively to keep the course technical and challenging, but they still let you throw a few over them mountains.

Lots of great, memorable holes on the front 9, starting with number 1's tree hallway.

Cons:

The back 9 feels a bit tacked on. While the front 9 is extremely creative and fun, the back 9 really feels like just what it is... a large perimeter of leftward leaning courses going around the rest of the park. Don't go right or you'll go into the road, don't go extreme left or you'll hit families having a day at the park.

Additionally, signs with a bit more effort wouldn't be a bad idea. It's really hard to tell where exactly stuff is with satellite pictures, and the tee layout can be hard to figure out at times.

Other Thoughts:

If you don't know, the wind blows in Vegas. Don't be surprised if you find yourself playing a technical course in 20 mph winds and suffer accordingly.

Clean park, fun round! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 15, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is a course that I played once before many years ago when I first got into disc golf. It's been long enough that I didn't really remember all the holes but I did remember that I had a good time when I played it before. So I thought it was time to come back out and give it a second run now that I've been playing for a few years.

When I arrived I quickly remembered how easy parking was for this course because you park right outside of the Tee Box for whole one. The layout is really easy to navigate, but obviously it's a lot easier when you have someone to play with. Thankfully I met up with a local at hole one and we ended up playing the whole round together... which worked out great. Some of the baskets are hidden over hills or behind some shrubs, so it was nice to have someone to tell me where to aim when at the threw off the tee boxes.

Many of the holes are open, but there are a few trees to contend with in strategic spots. All the tee boxes are concrete which is nice, and the baskets are all in really great shape. The course winds its way through a park with pedestrians walking around barbecue pits. It really was a very pretty Park. All the grass was well-maintained and cut, all the OB area is clearly defined by rocks or paths.

A few stand out holes for me where hole 3, which backs up right to the main entrance of the park with the street right behind the basket, hole 10 I believe, which has this basket protected by a bunch of OB in the front and on the side, and hole 18 which forces you to play right back up to the parking area where there's usually a nice crowd of people watching you play in.

So a few highlights:
- Concrete pads
- Nice baskets
- Restrooms on site
- Variety of holes
- Clean, friendly park

Cons:

The first real con that comes to mind is only one tee box per hole. Most holes are about 300 to 350, but it would have been nice for a noodle arm like me to have some shorter throws here in there. Should be pointed out however that this is a pure nice to have as the layout did seem to flow really well.

Also some of the baskets are kind of confusing because the fairways of running back and forth from each other. We had a few people on another hole end up throwing their drives under our whole and it was confusing because they started picking up the wrong discs.

Other Thoughts:

All in all this is a really great Park and it reminds me a lot of the courses in California. If it had a pro shop on site and multiple tee pads per hole this would be easily a 4.5 course. I really enjoyed the round and I'll definitely be back to play again.

Nice Course In A Large, Lovely Green Las Vegas Park! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 10, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

Mountain Crest Park is a large, lovely green, manicured park in the city. It features all the amenities that a park could want for, multiple clean restrooms which were open at 7 am, basketball courts, gigantic children's play areas, basketball courts, picnic areas, walking paths, etc., etc., etc. The sprinklers were on at 7 am keeping the grass a lovely green.

The course starts and finishes at the parking lot. The tee pads are nice and large and concrete. The tee signs are metal and a littl bit beaten up. They're sometimes difficult to read. The baskets are Discatchers with the yellow band with small numbers on the band.

Mt. Crest starts out with a bang as # 1 is a slightly uphill gauntlet shot just over 300' through a row of planted trees. I doubt if many players make it all through this narrow corridor. The course is on the shorter side with a couple of ACE runs of 197 and 200' and only one hole (# 10 at 515') stretching over 360'. So being this short and basically flat, I'd have to call this a recreational course. Intermediate players and above will have their way here. Most holes are open with maybe a tree or two in guarding positions.

Cons:

The # 3 tee sign (I think) was pulled out and lying on the ground.
There isn't much in the way of obstacles or distance.
Fairly flat.

Other Thoughts:

For being as short, flat, and basic as this course is, I found it to be wonderfully entertaining. Of course, this might speak volumes to the fact that I happen to be a distance challenged, older recreational player. But perhaps, it has to do with the fact that this course is in a beautiful park and that I played on a lovely Las Vegas morning.

A must play in Las Vegas! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 2, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Very good tee sighs on almost all of the holes. The arial shots of the holes are very helpful when you can't see the baskets from the tee and help show where the OB areas are. Anything that is not grass is OB here and with the walking paths on almost every hole and the rock river running threw part of the back 9 you really have to watch your shots or you can rack up OB strokes fast. The wind plays a big factor into this course and makes you thing about shots and trying to putt here is a real challenge. There is also some really small and tight greens with the OB as well. Don't let the shortness of this course fool you. With the wind playing all through the course (10 to 15MPH+ when I played here) it makes you have to really throw hard. the grass is cut short and even and the tee pads are all fairly grippy. While it is an open field course there are trees throughout that make you pick lanes and have to flex shots between trees and the wind.

Cons:

A few of the tee sighs need to be reprinted as they have been partly torn up/off. A couple of the tee pads felt a bit short and 9's gets soaked when the sprinklers come on and gets really slick. A few of the baskets have partly broken bands on them and the chains are starting to look a little rough (they all catch good thought). The double edge sword to the OB walking paths adding the difficulty to this course is the people walking on them. But when I played at about 8AM they were all nice and worked with us disc golfers on sharing the space. The green on 13 was the only hole I thought was a bit unfair and dangerous to walkers as it was right on top of the walking path and the rock river and is a blind left-hander downhill from the tee. Did't see any dog poop when I played but watch for it as it could be close to a few of the baskets.

Other Thoughts:

Overall I love this course and will be back anytime I'm back in Vegas for work. The biggest 3 things I think this course could use to push it up to a 4 or 4.5 would be a true practice basket (hole 8 or 18's work but would be nice to try to put one in in-between hole 8's basket and 1's tee box). Need a kiosk somewhere by hole 1's tee (could maybe try to put it just to the right of 1's tee box) to help find hole 1 and give some info on the local disc golf area and the course. And move hole 13's basket back a bit or over the right to either give a bit more room on the landing or take out the blindness of it to make it a bit safer for walkers. Favorite hole was hole 11 because of taking the high risk/high reward option of trying to clear the OB or laying up and playing it safe off the tee.

Desert Oasis 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 27, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Well maintained course in a well maintained park.

Baskets are all in good shape, no issues there.

Concrete tees provide excellent footing.

Bathroom facilities are right in the middle and accessible in the middle of your round or at the end.

Very good signage and easy to navigate from tee to tee.

Friendly locals.

Cons:

Not a lot of shot variety required as most holes are basically open.

The tee signs are basically printouts of Google Maps and seem to always be oriented north->south, which can be a little confusing to figure out which direction you're facing.

No dedicated practice basket, most people seem to practice at 18 and then give way when people come up.

If there is "official" OB it's not marked anywhere. I got the impression that outside the walking paths was OB as you'd expect, but it wasn't clear whether the rock beds were supposed to be OB or not. If they are, there are a couple of baskets that are silly close to OB.

Other Thoughts:

This course is popular! On a weekday afternoon there were multiple other groups playing as well as dog walkers and other general park-goers. That's a good sign.

It's not marked, but play the tunnel shot on 1 as a mando into the tunnel. That's probably the way it was meant to be played, and trying the big hyzer route has you throwing directly at hole 2's teepad, which is dangerous.

Mountain Crest Park - A walk in the park! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 4, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

Mountain Crest Park is the nicest course off the strip in the Las Vegas area. This course plays in a well manicured park with ample room to park with easy access off the highway. Although not the most difficult course, the fun factor is high here and is a hot spot for local disc golfers. Due to the heat, playing in the early morning or late evening is a must if you don't want to fry. Even though there are plenty of trees in the park to find shade under, the fairways are wide open for the most part and are in direct sunlight.

Holes on the course range anywhere from 197-416 feet but average closer to the 300ft range. Par for the course is 62, which seemed high, with no real par 4's in my opinion. I shot 15 down my first time which was a 974 rating and didn't even play that well considering it was my first time. It was however quick to play and easy to navigate due to nice signage and an obvious flow. Toward the end of my round I met some great locals who invited me to play since I was solo which was welcoming and ended up being a lot of fun!

Cons:

Overall Challenge

There are a few blind holes which add to the difficulty but most pins can be reaching using any line you choose due to the open space. Fairways present little challenge on most holes but as time goes on and the trees continue to develop, I can see the difficulty here increasing some over time. Fortunately, due to selective pin placement and OB along the walking path and roads that comes into play throughout the round, disc placement does become important at times. Especially when it is windy! Tee pads and baskets are in excellent condition, although like many other courses around here, are quite slick when wet creating the potential chance of an errant throw or even worse, and injury.

Speed of Play

As mentioned previously in my review, this course gets packed! Whether it's disc golfers, dog walkers, or someone out exercising, there is always someone here. On a busy day it could take hours to play as to when the park is empty and it takes about an hour and a half. That has an impact on one's schedule so plan accordingly.

Other Thoughts:

Mountain Crest Park was ideal for someone coming from out of town like myself. It was easy to find, navigate, and play in a reasonable amount of time. It was a beautiful park located in a safe area with zero chances of losing a disc. I am very happy to have played this course for the experience and even though it wasn't great, it was more than enough for someone trying to play a round in the desert. I appreciate the efforts the locals put into maintaining this course and know it will continue to get better with age.

We had a rest day in Las Vegas and showed-up here with no research and it was easy to find and easy to play. Played on a Monday mid-morning and the only people in the park were other disc-golfers so it was nice and relaxed.

Cons:

Decent open park course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 24, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course plays through a large multi-use park. The fairways are grassy and nicely groomed with lurking sidewalk and desert OB on many of the holes. If you play all these as OB, it adds quite a bit of risk to some of the shots especially when running the basket from the tee. There is a wide range of hole lengths, from ace runs to longer shots that let you rip a longer drive.

The trees are pretty scattered and most are fairly small, but the design uses them fairly well. Most of the drives feel pretty open but you do have to consider shot placement and there are a couple holes where you have to hit a specific line to get your birdie.

Cons:

I like the chance to throw some longer drives in the open, but there's a little too much of that on this course. There isn't a whole lot more to work with but it still allows for pretty simple hyzers on just about every shot. A couple spots have some awkward flow, make sure to take a map and pay attention to the directional markers for the next tee on each tee sign. The sidewalk didn't seem too crowded, but with several blind shots crossing the walkways there is a potential for safety issues and conflicts with other park users.

Other Thoughts:

Beginners will find this course longer but forgiving, with no punishment for errant shots and no lost discs. More experienced players will find this an ok place to work on longer drives and shot placement in the wind, but not many technical line shaping skills are necessary here.

Cons:

Multi-use park with lots of non-DGers, so we had to skip around to get all the holes in. Very windy, which seems to be common around town. I had to play real conservative to not lose shots into the street or over fences.

The tunnel shot on #1 sets up the course and really makes for a fun round! If you can, come during the week, when most kids are in school, and folks are working, so that you reduce your chance of encountering wandering targets. Fun Public Park Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 26, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This is a very well maintained park with a great view of Las Vegas. It's a shame they are thinking of pulling the park as it's one of the best ones in Vegas.

The Tees are flat and well marked so it makes navigation without a map really easy. Some of the markers are upside down for some reason, but they are still well done with satellite views so it's not a guessing game as to where the baskets are, which is good since some of them are blind shots.

Hole 1 was awesome, a straight upshot through narrow trees made it a very difficult hole for anyone who can't throw very straight and low for a long distance.

The course makes great use of the terrain and the layout, for the most part, is meant to allow for disc golfers and park goers to all be happy.

Cons:

There are a plethora of people in this park, so I can see why there is the threat of pulling the course if golfers aren't cautious. We had a group of girls playing soccer on hole 2 so we skipped it, but didn't have any other issues the rest of the round, and given how busy it was it seems that the park goers are pretty mindful of the course.

As mentioned, some of the markers are upside down and a couple are torn. Pretty petty con, I know, so that should give you an indication of why this is a well rated park, there isn't much to complain about at all.

Other Thoughts:

Overall this was a fun park to play. It didn't have the long open shots that you find at Sunset, but it also doesn't have the jagged disk eating rocks of Red Ridge.

The design was very well done in my opinion. The layout flows very well.

I agree with all of the other reviewers when I say to be very courteous on this course. With the blind shots and close pavilions it could be tempting to just throw without having a spotter or not lay it up when people are around, but with the heavy usage it's a bad gamble to take, (Vegas reference, hahaha).

Pros:

This is a nice park-style course that offers plenty of variety.

The Park District does a very nice job keeping the grass alive. This was a pleasant surprise in the middle of the desert.

The baskets were nice, but the loop for the inner ring of chains was missing from most of the baskets. I am assuming that some kids with too much time on their hands caused this, so I am not listing baskets as a "con". Hopefully the local club or park district will handle this issue in the near future.

The teepads were nice and level.

The signs were good, but some were mounted upside-down. I found myself tilting my head on more than a few holes to try and figure out where to look for the next basket.

I believe #1 was the signature hole here. This will become a rather difficult hole as the trees mature over time.

On several holes, the basket was not visible from the teepad either because of trees or elevation changes.

The available elevation was utilized very well here.

The walking path/sidewalk can and should be used as OB. This will add some difficulty to a mostly open layout.

Cons:

There are various other park activities and shelters that are located very close to some fairways. On a nice day, this course is an accident waiting to happen. As other reviewers have mentioned, please be careful and don't hit anyone.

#13--#16 are close to the road. This could cause problems on windy days. It was very windy for my round and thankfully I only had 1 disc land in the street.

Other Thoughts:

Pro/advanced level players will find some difficult holes here on their first round, but will most likely still score very well.

Recreational level and new players will be challenged here at Mountain Crest.

This is a fun course with plenty of opportunities for alternate tees and/or safari holes.

I would be happy to play another round here on my next trip to Vegas.

Please be careful and don't gamble on this course. I know it's tempting while here in Vegas. ;) However, please use caution and spotters if other park users or disc golfers are in the vicinity of whichever hole you are playing.

Pros:

I like that you can go throw some plastic and get a round in in an hour.

The grass is nice and green in the middle of dead heat summer.

Layout is good use of the land available

Cons:

Not disc golf dedicated and public use is public use. I am happy to have the course here so I hope disc golfers are courteous. EG there were about 1000 people there tonight so I got seven holes in (with my two my boys) and was happy that I got those 7 in (holiday weekend)

I am not a big fan of some of the pin locations, lots of sidewalks creating difficult islands left to chance rather than skill....maybe i am just not good enough for the skill!

Other Thoughts:

There is risk of the course being pulled because of the bad apples, I do my part and say hi to the other users and let them have the right of way. This is defintely not a championship course but for those who like to play for fun this is a good spot

Lot of sun but more trees than you'd think 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 21, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

I was afraid that this Vegas course would be completely open with barely any trees. Honestly, the pictures make it looks more open that it plays. The design forces you to consider the trees - which tend to be on the younger side - along with a variety of desert landscaping. Although there are some holes where you can just rip a drive over the top of everything, I did find the design forcing me to throw some tough turnover shots in the stiff wind (if you didn't know, it's always windy in Vegas).

Holes range from 200 to over 500 feet, but most are in the 275-375 feet range. Navigation here was generally good, and many tee pads are easily visible from the last basket. It did take me awhile to find the tees for holes 12 and 18, even with the map.

The yellow baskets are easily visible, aside from the holes where the view is blocked from the tee.

If you play the desert landscaping as OB (you should), there are some good risk/reward shots.
Parking was plentiful.

Cons:

The tee signs are all aerial photographs with a line from the basket, but the perspective doesn't change on the maps. So the map might show you throwing from the upper right to the lower left, which makes it a little tough to orient yourself ("okay, we're throwing toward that gazebo...is the basket to the right or left of it?"). The tees are not overly long, which may impede your run up.

There is a lot of throwing over sidewalks. I think this "con" gets overplayed sometimes, though. Are these sidewalks actually used heavily? Is this a real danger or theoretical? I was there in the middle of the afternoon on a Thursday. The park was getting used, but not much with pedestrians.

The course is pretty flat.

There are no alternate tees or basket positions from what I could tell. There is probably no room for alternate tees, but different positions could be a possibility.

Other Thoughts:

This is the busiest course in town, but I've never seen it overcrowded.

My first round was on a 105-degree day at about 2:00pm. The heat was not as oppressive as I feared. It doesn't feel that different than a 90-degree day in the Midwest. But the direct sunlight is intense, so cover up. And if you're from out of town, you'll need more water than you're used to.

After playing every course in town, this one is my favorite.
