Decent Start for a Park 9

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 30, 2024 Played the course:once

New 9 hole layout with Innova baskets (next hole directional arrows mounted below the cages). No signage or tees yet - there are small orange flags on the grass indicating tees.

Hole #3 is a very cool design throwing into the woods from an elevated tee. The first real "character" hole after two fairly open holes near the parking lot.

Hole #5 starts as a wide open 601' par 4 next to a ballfield and then cuts hard left up into the woods with water off to the left. Very nicely designed, though I'm not sure you can play it safely during a ballgame

- With no signage, uDisc is very necessary - and not very accurate. Walk ahead if you don't see the basket

- As currently designed, #4 is a Z-shaped par 4 hole that plays with a couple of short to make the sharp corners. I noticed flags indicating what might be an alternate tee after the first corner. Playing from there (as a par 3) would make for a much better design.

- Hole #8 plays next to a set of swings. Not great.

Other Thoughts:

~ #6 is a very short (171' downhill) shot over a stream and through a tight window. It might be an exciting challenge for novices, but it's really just a putter flick.

~ Playing in early Spring there wasn't much ground cover on the wooded holes, but I wonder if rough will grow in and make discs pretty easy to lose.

~ Long walk down the park road to find holes 8 and 9 (and a long walk back). Both are open park-style holes. 8 features a sunken green that looks great, but also looks like it gathers water. 9 is just an open hole, and the green is at the farthest point from the parking lot.

Shangri-La is pleasant enough, with a few average or better holes. But it's a 2.0 at best, reflecting the amount of work that still needs to be done to make this a good play. It might rate even higher if they redesign 4 and 6, though there's still the long walk to and from the final holes. Bag it, enjoy it, and move on.
